Dear Dad, I would sooner forget my own name before I would forget the blessed mother. I have kept my promise.

Happy birthday in Heaven, united with Jesus Christ and His blessed mother, your patron saint, Our Lady of Guadalupe. “Our Lady of Guadalupe” “Let not your heart be disturbed. Do not fear that sickness. nor any other sickness or anguish, Am I not here, who is your Mother? Are you not under my protection? Am I not your health? Are you not happily within my fold? What else do you wish? Do not grieve nor be disturbed by anything”

(Words of Our Lady to Juan Diego)

Flavio Canales, Jr. December 12, 1933 - January 11, 2014

After Glow I’d like the memory of me to be a happy one. I’d like to leave an after glow of smiles when life is done. I’d like to leave an echo whispering softly down the ways, of happy times and laughing times and bright and sunny days. I’d like the tears of those who grieve to dry before the sun of happy memories that I leave when life is done.

A special thanks from the Avila, Bermea, and Flores Families

Many thanks to those who showed kindness to our family during our time of grief. We express our sincerest gratitude for your presence, flowers, food, cards, prayers, and comforting words.

Torchbearer Ritual Celebrated

Texas Delta Theta Master of Beta Sigma Phi members conducted a ritual honoring Tissa Peterson with the Torchbearer degree. Attained after twelve years of holding the Master degree, the Torchbearer is the seventh and final degree. The name Torchbearer brings to mind quests such as the reaching of a summit, or becoming a leader and allowing the light of the torch to reflect its shine so that all members are illuminated. Sisters who earn this degree will serve as Beta Sigma Phi ambassadors. They will be committed to spreading the light of our torch as they continue on their worldly travels and will mentor sisters who are progressing through their various degrees. Vice-president Diana Peña conducted the ritual, assisted by Vangie Anderson, Nelda Laurel, and all other sisters in attendance. The meeting was held in the home of Rosie Garcia, with Becky Canales presiding during the business meeting.

Starr County Pct. 4 and Pct. 1 Nutrition Centers Participants Celebrated Halloween

STC Starr Psych Club - United Against Bullying

On Wednesday, October 19, 2016, which was Unity Day Against Bullying, the Starr County Campus Psychology Club of South Texas College wore orange and wrote anti-bullying messages on orange paper for a social media awareness campaign against bullying. Some of the messages read “Be a Buddy, Not a Bully,” “United for Kindness, Acceptance, and Inclusion,” “Don’t let anyone ever dull your sparkle,” “People throw rocks at things that thrive,” “Say NO to bullying,” “Making others feel small doesn’t make you bigger than them,” “Stop Bullying,” “Stay Strong Beautiful,” “Pulling someone down will never help reach the top,” to name a few. Although October is national bullying prevention awareness month, we should remember this all year long.

Pct. 4 and Pct. 1 Nutrition Centers Staff held a Halloween Celebration for the members that attend the centers. The centers staff provide nutritious meals and stimulating entertainment for all who attend. Staying active is one of the key benefits for senior citizens and Commissioner Ruben D. Saenz and Commissioner Abel Cantu and their staff work diligently to provide senior citizens an opportunity to stay active. (County of Starr Public Relations Office).

NOVENA “Miraculous Prayer”

R. G. C.

Dear Sacred Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for favors. This time I ask you this very special one (mention favor). Take it, Dear Jesus, and place it within your own heart, where your Father sees it. Then, in your merciful eyes it will become your favor, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for three days, promise publication and favor will be granted. Never known to fail.

Hooded mergansers winter on the Valley Once in awhile we see a hooded merganser on the pond here at Rancho Lomitas. The last one I saw was diving for food. I was out taking my dog for a morning walk and, having seen me approach, the merganser got a bit agitated and swam slowly to the opposite shore and then back toward me. I was both puzzled and pleased to have it come closer so I could have a good look. Why it did so became apparent when it suddenly turned about, took off and was gone. Mergansers need considerable distance to take-off and fly. It had come closer to me in order to have enough room in the opposite direction to take flight. There are three species of mergansers found in the Valley and those only in the winter. One, the red-breasted merganser, is found along the gulf in salt water. Two prefer fresh water, the common merganser and the hooded merganser which was visiting our pond.

Hooded mergansers are found in the Pacific coast states and throughout the eastern half of the U. S. However, they’re seldom seen because they’re never abundant, never in large flocks and quite shy. The one coming to the pond was probably a female although it might be a first year male. Mergansers are identified by noting their thin, serrated bills with a slight hook at the tip. Otherwise they look like ducks except that most of them have crests.

The female hoodie has a rufous, puffy crest on the top of the head and back of the neck. The bill is either black or black with yellow on the lower half. The eye is dull reddish and looks dark. The body and wings are dull brownish-gray. The breast is lighter and, when in flight, you may see a whitish belly and a small white patch on the secondary wing feathers.

Test-drive a Mazda, and we’ll pledge an hour of our time to a local, worthy cause. Purchase or lease any new Mazda vehicle, and we’ll donate $150 to a select national or local charity.

The male, as with many birds, is the elegant, colorful one of the pair. He doesn’t have to be camouflaged during nesting. His black head has a large white crest edged in black. The bill is black; the eye is yellow; the breast is white with two black slashes on each side; the sides show tiny ripples of brown and rust. You have to see one to realize how remarkably elegant it looks. Hooded mergansers prefer small ponds, lakes or slow moving streams. During the Summer up north, they perform elaborate mating rituals and nest, as wood ducks do, in holes in trees or stumps. Food for hoodies consists of small fish but mainly crayfish, water insects, dragonfly nymphs, some pond vegetation and a bit of corn if it’s made available. Hoodies swim underwater very well using both their feet and wings. They’re also skilled at flying around trees and branches in wooded areas. While never numerous and declining in numbers for awhile, the population seems to have stabilized. They may be making use of wood duck houses some conservation groups have been providing. If I could designate a few bird species to increase in numbers, the hooded merganser would certainly be one of them. I wish you the great pleasure of seeing one.

On October 12, 2016 Ms. Venessa Guerra’s 3rd grade class from Roque Guerra, Jr. Elementary, took part in an exciting outdoor science project. They participated in a hands on experiment to observe and record data on the melting process of ice in different settings. Through peer discussion and data comparison, the students were able to confirm predictions. The outcome of the lesson allowed students to learn how temperatures in substances affect transformations within the States of Matter; plus how substances relate and react to freezing, melting, and boiling points.
