10 Roma High Seniors Graduate with Associate Degrees from South Texas College
Congratulations to our Roma High School Class of 2018 Seniors who earned their associate degrees from our Dual Enrollment Program with South Texas College! Manuel Marroquin, Fernando Mireles, Marily Alaniz, Ana Palacios, Jocelyn Rodriguez, Larissa Martinez, Prisma Lopez, Chloe Perez, Luis Barrera and Jose Javier Gonzalez all earned their associate degrees at no cost to them. Their hard work during their high school careers has allowed them to earn two full years of transferrable college credit. The Mighty Gladiators were awarded their diplomas from South Texas College on May 11, 2018. “We are extremely proud of these students who have managed their regular high school curriculum along with the challenges of
college academics,” said Carlos Guzman, Roma ISD Superintendent. “Not every student decides to take this path because of the demands on time, and it is quite amazing to see how much these students have accomplished.” “The opportunities for students to earn college hours are vast at Roma High School and I am so happy students are continuing to take full advantage of these time and money saving opportunities,” he added. “This is a program we are very proud to have at RISD and hope to grow in the coming years to help our families instill college-bound ideals and make college and technical training a tradition for our students. Way to go to these graduates and all students graduating with college credit from the Class of 2018!”

Girl Scout Brownie Troop # 1056 of Rio Grande City completed their World of Girls Journey service project on July 13, 2018 by making donations to the Starr County Community Closet. The girls met with Treasurer, Manty Montalvo, to learn how the center can help those in need. The Brownies generously donated 16 bags of clothing, shoes, toys, books, and other items. The troop leaders Irvette Mendoza and Lisa Margo want the girls to learn how important it is to give back to our community. The troop has completed several other service projects in the past, including serving Thanksgiving meals, donating blankets at the nursing home, recycling, planting flowers, and donating funds to St. Jude Children’s Hospital. The Starr County Community Closet is located at 10 Mayorga St. RGC, TX. Their number is 956-488-2025. Donations of gently used items, monetary donations, and volunteer help are all appreciated.

Private Water Well Screening in Starr County screening on July 31, 2018 at the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service office in Starr County, 500 N. Britton Ave, Rio Grande City, to give area residents the opportunity to have their well water tested. “Private water wells should be tested annually,” said Omar Montemayor, AgriLife Extension Service County Extension Agent in Starr County. Montemayor said for area residents to have their well water tested, they need to open and drain a new, sealed, 16.9oz water bottle and use it to collect water sample from the nearest faucet to the water well. Sample must be collected within 24hrs from drop off date. This will be a free program and samples must be turned in by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, July 31, 2018. Samples will be screened for common contaminants, including fecal coliform bacteria, nitrates and high salinity. The presence of fecal coliform bacteria in water indicates that waste from humans or warm-

Always and Forever
They say that time’s a healer. But as time goes on, we seem to ind it just as hard to face the fact that you are gone. Today is your First Year Anniversary of the day you went away. Mom, you were our Rock, our Anchor our Inspiration that kept us all together. Now, we walk down Memory Lane with tears upon our cheeks. Remembering you is easy, we do it every day. Missing you is a heartache that never goes away. We cherish every memory of you and wanted you to know that we love and miss you every second of the day.
First Anniversary Mass will be celebrated on Sunday July 22, 2018 11:00AM

bacteria is more likely to also have pathogens present that can cause diarrhea, cramps, nausea or other symptoms. “Water with nitrate nitrogen at levels of 10 parts per million is considered unsafe for human consumption,” Montemayor said. “These nitrate levels above 10 parts per million can disrupt the ability of blood to carry oxygen throughout the body, resulting in a condition called methemoglobinemia. Infants less than 6 months of age and young livestock are most susceptible.”
Salinity as measured by total dissolved solids will also be determined for each sample. Water with high levels may leave deposits and have a salty taste, and using water with high
levels for irrigation may damage soil or plants. For more information, please contact the AgriLife Extension offices in Starr County at (956) 487-2306..

DPS: Make Plans for CDL Testing Today Summer is one of the busiest times at driver license offices statewide, and the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is reminding all customers seeking a Commercial Driver License
(CDL) to begin the process as early as possible. This is particularly important for those seeking employment at school districts to allow them ample time to obtain a CDL before the school year begins.
CDL customers can obtain their Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) and take their written test at any of the more than 200 driver license offices statewide. A CDL customer must hold the CLP for at
least 14 days before they can take their skills test. Because skills tests can only be taken at certain offices, appointments fill up fast during the summer. Though a driver needs a wide breadth of knowledge to be successful in driving a commercial vehicle, the information included in the test itself is limited to the material contained in the CDL Handbook. Therefore, CDL applicants are encouraged to carefully study the CDL Handbook and review the three-step process for tests: pre-trip vehicle inspection, basic vehicle control and on-road driving. DPS has also created a series of videos to help CDL applicants prepare for the vehicle inspection portion of the test. Any applicant seeking CDL training is encouraged to review the Texas Workforce Commission website to find a training program in their area. Customers with general questions about obtaining their CDL can reach the department by emailing texascdl@dps.texas.gov. Customers with questions about the CDL Third-Party Testing Program can send their questions to cdl_ tpstprogram@dps.texas.gov.
