City of Roma City Manager Alex Barrera was awarded the Tyler Technology Excellence Award at the national CONNECT Conference held in Indianapolis,

Indiana. The national award is given to individuals who utilize software “to save time and money, make more informed decisions, and streamline processes to optimize operations.” Mr. Barrera upgraded the City’s accounting software to a cloud version that allowed for him to export data and create dashboards to analyze revenue and expenses, identify trends, drill into discrepancies, and share necessary budget information across departments. For small municipalities with limited budgets, any cost savings can deliver real value to the community and the people they serve. The process to identify cost

savings, however, can too often be a tedious, time-consuming task. A process that previously took hours now takes only minutes thanks in large part to Mr. Barrera’s creativity and innovation. “We are extremely proud of Alex’s work as City Manager. His insight into the City’s financial allows the City Council to make decisions that provide the best possible services at the lowest possible cost to our taxpayers.” said Mayor Jaime Escobar, Jr. Mr. Barrera’s efforts earned him an all-expense paid trip to the national Tyler CONNECT Conference where he was recognized in front of technology leaders from around the country.

Mr. Ariel Ozuna, GHS Principal, the GHS administration, and staff, would like to congratulate recent Grulla High School Graduate, Onesimo Quiroz, IV, for enlisting with United State Air Force. He is the son of Onesimo and Maira Quiroz. The Gator Family are extremely proud that Onesimo will be serving our country and wishes him the best of luck in all his future endeavors.

Iris M. Guerra September 30, 1967 † July 21, 2021

He Only Takes The Best

God saw you getting tired and a cure was not to be. So He put his arms around you and whispered, ‘Come with Me.’ With tearful eyes we watched you slowly fade away, although we loved you dearly, we could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands at rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us... He only takes the best.

1st Year Anniversary Mass will be celebrated on Saturday July 23, 2022 at 5pm Immaculate Conception Church, Rio Grande City, Tx.

Beat the Heat with Red Cross Safety Tips The dangerous heat continues this week, bringing high temperatures and sweltering humidity to much of the country. In the American Red Cross Texas Gulf Coast region, millions will experience excessive heat warnings and record-breaking high temperatures throughout the coming days. Because extreme heat and humidity can be deadly, the Red Cross offers steps you can take to help stay safe when the temperatures soar. WHO’S AT RISK? Some people are more at risk of developing a heat-related illness, including adults age 65 and older, those with chronic medical conditions, people who work outside, infants and children and athletes. Some may take medications that make the effects of extreme heat worse. People with heart disease, poor blood circulation, obesity and mental illness are at risk for getting sick if the temperatures climb. HEAT SAFETY TIPS •Hot cars can be deadly. Never leave children or pets in your vehicle. The inside temperature of the car can quickly reach 120 degrees. •Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids. Avoid drinks with caffeine or alcohol.

•Check on family, friends and neighbors who do not have air conditioning, who spend much of their time alone or who are more likely to be affected by the heat. •If you don’t have air conditioning, seek relief from the heat during the warmest part of the day in places like schools, libraries, theaters, malls, etc. •Avoid extreme temperature changes. •Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, light-colored clothing. Avoid dark colors because they absorb the sun’s rays. •Slow down, stay indoors and avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest part of the day. •Postpone outdoor games and activities. •Use a buddy system when working in excessive heat. Take frequent breaks if working outdoors. •Check on animals frequently to ensure that they are not suffering from the heat. Make sure they have plenty of cool water and shade. •Excessive heat can lead to sunburn, heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. If someone is experiencing heat cramps in the legs or abdomen, get them to a cooler place, have them rest, lightly stretch the affected muscle, and replenish their fluids with a half a glass (about 4 ounces)

of cool water every 15 minutes. •If someone is exhibiting signs of heat exhaustion (cool, moist, pale or flushed skin, heavy sweating, headache, nausea, dizziness, weakness and exhaustion), move them to a cooler place, remove or loosen tight clothing and spray the person with water or apply cool, wet cloths or towels to the skin. Fan the person. If they are conscious, give small amounts of cool water to drink. Make sure the person drinks slowly. Watch for changes in condition. If the person refuses water, vomits or begins to lose consciousness, call 911. HEAT STROKE LIFETHREATENING - Heat stroke usually occurs by ignoring the signals of heat exhaustion. Heat stroke develops when the body systems are overwhelmed by heat and begin to stop functioning. Signs include hot, red skin which may be dry or moist; changes in consciousness; vomiting and high body temperature. Call 911 immediately if someone shows signs of heat stroke. Move the person to a cooler place. Quickly cool the person’s body by immersing them up to their neck in cold water if possible. Otherwise, douse or spray the person with cold water, or cover the person with cold, wet towels or bags of ice.
