Joel Villarreal, the Mayor of Rio Grande City, expressed gratitude towards Texas Regional Bank for investing in the community. He praised the positive growth and direction of the area and welcomed the bank as a valuable addition to the community.
Texas Regional Bank (TRB) held a groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate the start of construction for its new banking center in Rio Grande City. The event occurred on June 15th, 2023 and commemorates TRB’s 30th location in Texas and 14th in the Rio Grande Valley region.
Michael Scaief, Chairman and CEO of TRB, expressed his admiration for the historical architecture of Rio Grande City and how it has influenced TRB banking centers, “Several years ago, I toured downtown and fell in love with the architecture,” said Mr. Scaief. “Today, every
TRB branch built in the Rio Grande Valley was inspired by Rio Grande City brickwork.”
The construction of the Rio Grande City banking center will utilize 115,000 artisan handmade bricks. “I look forward to serving the community that has had a substantial impact on Texas
Regional Bank’s identity,” added Scaief.
The new TRB location in Rio Grande City will offer a comprehensive range of banking products and services tailored to meet the needs of both personal and business customers. The new banking center will provide

Why you should consider a flood insurance policy?
Most home insurance doesn’t cover damage from flooding after a storm.
Even a small amount of water can cause thousands of dollars of damage. If you don’t have flood insurance, you’ll have to pay for those repairs on your own.
So, consider shopping for a flood policy.
Homeowners who get a standard National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) policy can insure their home for
up to $250,000 and also cover up to $100,000 in belongings. Renters can also get NFIP coverage for up to $100,000 in belongings. Contact your agent or insurance company about buying a flood policy. Plans usually take effect 30 days after purchase. Have a question about insurance? Call the Texas Department of Insurance at 800252-3439 or visit www.tdi.texas. gov.

Dear Sacred Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for favors. This time I ask you this very special one (mention favor). Take it, Dear Jesus, and place it within your own heart, where your Father sees it. Then, in your merciful eyes it will become your favor, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for three days, promise publication and favor will be granted. Never known to fail.

God’s Garden God looked around his garden and found an empty place, He then looked down upon the earth and saw your tired face. He put his arms around you and lifted you to rest. God’s garden must be beautiful, He always takes the best. He knew that you were suffering, He knew you were in pain, He knew that you would never get well on earth again. He saw the road was getting rough and the hills were hard to climb. So He closed your weary eyelids and whispered, ‘Peace be thine.’ It broke our hearts to lose you but you didn’t go alone, for part of us went with you the day God called you home.

changes in thinking and mood, and changes in physical and emotional reactions.
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a disorder that develops in some people who have experienced a shocking, scary, or dangerous event.
Post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms may start within one month of a traumatic event, but sometimes symptoms may not appear until years after the event. Symptoms can cause significant problems in social or work situations, in relationships, and can also interfere with the ability to go about normal daily tasks.
Symptoms are generally grouped into four types: intrusive memories, avoidance, negative
This June, in observance of PTSD Awareness Month, we encourage our community to learn and talk about PTSD. Researching about PTSD’s causes, symptoms, and treatments will better equip you to help people in the future or even yourself.

Message from the Starr County Community Coalition
PTSD can impact anyone who experiences, witnesses or has second-hand exposure to a traumatic event. Examples of traumatic events: Combat exposure, childhood physical abuse, sexual violence, physical assault, being threatened with a weapon, an accident.
Symptoms of PTSD can take months or years to appear. Relatively few people who experience trauma will develop PTSD. PTSD can present very differently, depending on the person and type of trauma experienced. The majority of PTSD cases will not resolve on their own.

Energy Saving Tips for Summer
Cool energy tips for a hot summer!
Medina Electric Cooperative encourages efficient use of electricity which can also help lower electric bills. Summertime in South Texas is guaranteed to bring hotter temperatures and that means most people see an increase in their energy use. Finding ways to save energy can help save on summer electric bills.
•Adjust the thermostat. Adjusting the temperature on the thermostat one to two degrees above normal is a great way to reduce energy use. Programmable thermostats can automatically adjust the temperature for hours you’re gone and when you come home.
•Seal air leaks. Air leaks
silently waste money. Ensure the seals around windows, doors and air ducts are intact and that the cool air you pay for stays inside and the hot air from the outdoors stays outside!
•Use Fans. Use fans to keep cool. Having a fan on can make a person feel one to two degrees cooler. Just keep in mind that fans cool people, not rooms, and should be turned off when the room is unoccupied.
•Create Shade. Planting trees or large vegetation to create shade on the south and west windows of the house can provide relief from the sun’s heat on the home. Additionally, installing patio covers and solar window screens can also reduce excessive heat from the home.
•Cover Windows. Keep blinds, drapes or curtains closed during
the day to reduce the amount of heat your window absorbs inside. This will help keep the overall temperature inside the home nice and cool.

UTRGV-Starr County Scientist Dioramas at Rio Grande City Library
The creation of the dioramas stems from the idea that many scientists are often unknown mainly because they may be Hispanic, African American, Asian or Women. These minority scientists are the focus of the dioramas for a UTRGV at Starr County course entitled, Teaching Science to Elementary Students. Each university student was given a specific scientist to research enough information to create a diorama that would encourage young elementary students to think about science as a field of study.
Dr. Richard Irizarry provided a list of 28 scientists to the 28 students in the class, distributed on a random basis. The students need to understand the challenges and the contributions of these minority scientists to create an attractive diorama from a basic shoebox to display the talents and
the relative importance of the scientist.
Jocelynn Garza, the Cohort IX President, and a member of the class researched Dr. Helen Rodriguez - Trías who was the scientist assigned to her. Jocelynn stated, “I never heard of this scientist, let alone that she was a Latina doctor. I had no idea what to expect when I started researching this scientist. To me, a scientist is someone who wears a lab coat and conducts continuous experiments in a science lab or someone who
goes to the moon.” She added that Dr. Helen Rodriguez-Trías, on the other hand, was an incredible woman who helped so many people in poverty but focused more on women. She founded the Committee to End Sterilization Abuse as well as the Committee for Abortion Rights and Against Sterilization Abuse. She was the
voice of many women who had unwanted pregnancies or who tested positive for HIV. While conducting the diorama, Jocelynn and others noted that they had so fun much learning about
an amazing Latina or a minority scientist. “My classmates and I each had a different scientist, and it was a great way to showcase our creativity through a shoebox while also informing students
about our scientist. It was like a show and tell, but in a university classroom.” We are proud to be able to display our student’s creativity in the Rio Grande City Public Library.
