Dr. Raul “Jerry” Hernandez announces candidacy for Starr County Memorial Hospital Board Trustee Hello Fellow Citizens of Starr, My name is Dr. Raul “Jerry” Hernandez, I am a proud physician at our emerging hospital, and I am announcing my candidacy for Starr County Memorial Hospital Board Trustee. I grew up in Starr County. Starr County has and will always be my home. My parents always taught me the value of an education and service. My wife and I are proud parents to four beautiful daughters, Cassandra, Elliana, Katherine, and Sophia. In our home we believe that we can make a positive difference by being engaged with decisions that can impact our community. Growing up I attended Immaculate Conception School, Rio Grande City Junior High, and Rio Grande City High School. I went on to study at Texas A&M University and received my Bachelor of Arts in Biology. I also taught physical science

and chemistry for a year at Rio Grande City High School. I then went on to complete my Medical Doctorate at UTMB Galveston and then continued my residency in Anesthesiology at UTMB. I currently serve as Chief Anesthesiologist and provide my expertise in the Operating Room, Labor and Delivery, GI Lab, ER, Inpatient, and Covid Unit. I am running for Hospital Board because I believe my commitment to providing excellent patient care extends to making decisions for the future of Starr County Memorial Hospital. As a region we remain underserved in our specialty care. I firmly want to be a part of making decisions and bring to our community the services we so much need and deserve. I want to assure you that along with the SCMH Administration and Medical Care Professionals, we will continue to work together to
improve the care of Starr County. We must be visionaries and progressive minded in dealing with ever changing situations, and we must continuously work to better our hospital and our health care. I believe that as your next Starr County Hospital Board Member I will be a strong asset to bringing a united and collective approach to the needs of our hospital.
Asking for your humble support,

These repairs will address safety issues and enable the courthouse to continue providing essential services to the County. “Starr County will greatly benefit from this sizable investment. This appropriations bill addresses
the needs of rural America, and I am proud to have voiced – and won – favorable investments for my district,” said Congressman Cuellar. “As a member of the Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee, I will continue to advocate on behalf of my district to impress that investing in community infrastructure will directly improve the well-being and health of my constituents and their localities. Prayer to St. Anthony
“Blessed be God in His Angels and in His Saints” O Holy St. Anthony gentlest of Saints, your love for God and charity for His creatures made you worthy, when on earth, to possess miraculous powers. Miracles waited on your word, which you were ever ready to speak for those in trouble or anxiety. Encouraged by this thought, I implore you to obtain for me (request). The answer to my prayer may require a miracle, even so you are the Saint of Miracles. O gentle and loving St. Anthony, whose heart was ever full of human sympathy, whisper my petition into the ears of the sweet Infant Jesus, who loved to be folded in your arms, and the gratitude of my heart will ever be yours. Amen. Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be. Publicize after favor is granted.

Take a Break From Electronic Devices Physicians Suggest As families spend time with loved ones, physicians say immersing oneself in electronic devices like phones and laptops can stand in the way of creating bonds and feeling connected. To combat this, Texas doctors
recommend everyone “turn it off.” “Families are physically gathering together, but each member is personally engaged and distracted with their electronic devices, and not interacting with each other,” said Eman Attaya,
LEGAL NOTICE:
Gabriel Rodriguez Sr. is the owner of Los Mesquites Ranch, San Gregorio Ranch, and San Francisco Ranch located in Northern Starr County Texas. Fourth Court of Appeals Garza vs. Rodriguez 18 S.W. 694-699 (Tex. App. San Antonio 2000). The Probate was closed in 1987 and made final by Judge Alex W. Gabert. This notice is being made in the interest of Justice. Any other judgments are void judgments, and are contrary with law, or due process. See: [Corla Jackson v. Proverbs 3:5-6 5 Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. 6 In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths.
MD, immediate past chair of the Texas Medical Association (TMA) Council on Health Promotion. The problem, she said, is these devices promote loneliness and isolation, while hindering meaningful social interactions. To help people unplug and connect, TMA launched a new initiative, Turn It Off Today, to encourage families to pledge to take a break from electronic devices. The program aims to reduce the amount of time people – especially children and adolescents – spend looking at their screens. “We must remember that face-to-face interactions (offline interactions) and strong social ties are associated with greater life satisfaction and overall well-being than online interactions,” said Dr. Attaya, whose TMA council launched the initiative statewide. Previously, Dr. Attaya and her fellow physicians and alliance members at the Lubbock County Medical Society and the Lubbock County Medical Society Alliance created Turn It Off Today in 2019 for area families to adopt; TMA’s
program replicates that. The program’s goal is to encourage families to swap time spent watching movies, playing video games, or scrolling through social media with “green time” (time outdoors). Dr. Attaya recommends families instead try walking, hiking, biking, and other sports, adding “studies have shown that being outside promotes physical activity, attention restoration, stress reduction, improved memory and sleep, and even healthier cortisol levels.” Other activities to consider include playing board games, doing arts and crafts, creating an indoor garden, cooking/baking together, playing music, reading, or learning a new hobby. Turn It Off Today one example is switching off phones, computers, tablets, or other devices a few hours every day. Another example calls for simply disengaging phone alerts, which draw people’s attention to the device. Setting time limits on apps and removing electronic devices from the bedroom will also help reduce
screen time. Children and adolescents spend at least four hours daily on leisurebased screen time (and up to nine hours total screen time per day). Too much screen time can lead to depression and anxiety, developmental delays, sleep deprivation, thoughts of suicide, lack of focus, and obesity. Staring at screens more than an hour each day also is tied to less curiosity, lower self-control, less emotional stability, and less ability to complete tasks. People can even experience physical changes in the brain such as “grey matter volume loss.” The program recognizes that abandoning technology entirely is not practical. It aims to educate families on the detrimental side effects of too much screen time while developing a plan to help limit use. “Taking a break from technology, participating in nonscreen activities, and socially engaging face to face will improve our overall emotional and physical well-being,” said Dr. Attaya.

Local Blood Centers Ensure Supply Is Meeting Need
Texas physicians are calling for the public to donate blood to shore up supply and ensure blood and blood product needs here are met - while some areas of the country have experienced shortages. “During these challenging times, no patient - be they a transplant or surgical patient, an accident victim, or an individual with sickle cell disease - can wait until their blood transfusion is convenient,” said William S. Crews Jr., MD, chair of the Texas Medical Association Subcommittee on Transfusion and Transplantation. “We urge our fellow Texans to roll up their sleeves and donate now, and plan to do so regularly.” The medical director at a community blood center in the
Dallas-Fort Worth area said while blood donations are needed right now and always, the current situation is not as critical as some areas of the country. That’s because the regional blood centers in our state help Texans sufficiently meet fellow Texans’ needs. Blood donations nationwide decreased during the COVID-19 pandemic, prompting some areas of the U.S. to curtail some medical procedures like elective surgeries. “Although we are experiencing some blood supply shortages, we’re definitely not at the crisis level of telling hospitals, ‘I’m sorry, I know you were expecting 50 units of blood. Tomorrow, we’re only going to maybe give you 30 units,’” he said, describing
STARR COUNTY TOWN CRIER, MARCH 30, 2022, PAGE 11 Millions of people need blood transfusions each year. Some may need blood during surgery. Others depend on it after an accident or because they have a disease that requires blood components. Blood donation makes all of this possible. There is no substitute for human blood — all transfusions use blood from a donor.
what’s happened in other states. “I’m not aware of any of blood centers in Texas having to go to the level of reducing the amount of blood that they provide for patients.” That’s because in the Lone Star State, the focus is on collecting local blood and keeping it local as much as possible. “In Texas, we have a strong network of those community blood centers,” he said. So as some national organizations and others in parts of the country sounded an urgent alarm earlier this year for donations, Texas was better off. That status only remains positive if people donate, Dr. Crews said, he and his fellow TMA committee members urge people to donate.
