CONGRATULATIONS to the entire San Isidro Staff for developing an outstanding group of fifteen 2021 San Isidro Scholarship Applicants. They are always impressed year after year with the quality of students, the many con-current enrollment college hours they have earned and their career plans. MIL GRACIAS goes out to the donor judges that helped with the interviews - Father Juan Manuel Salazar, Viola Hinojosa, Marcelino Flores and Amanda Garcia. A BIG HEARTY THANKS goes out to all San Isidro Scholarship Donors. San Isidro ISD is so grateful to those who value the efforts of the students and invest in their future endeavors. Without the generous support from donors, such as these individuals, the students would not be able to fund their educational demands. Thank you for recognizing the students’ hard work. Anyone interested in awarding scholarships to these great students can contact Superintendent Mario Alvarado.

Thank you, St. Jude, for the hope you offer to all who believe in you. Melissa Y. Hernandez

According to the Cancer Patients Alliance, between 20 and 30 percent of pancreatic cancer cases are believed to be attributable to smoking. Other forms of consuming tobacco, including smokeless forms like chewing tobacco, also are associated with increasing a person’s risk of developing pancreatic cancer, which the World Cancer Research Fund notes is the 12th most commonly occurring cancer in men and the 11th most commonly occurring cancer in women. Men once accounted for a significant portion of pancreatic cancer cases, but estimates from the National Pancreatic Cancer Foundation indicate that roughly the same number of men and women are now expected to be diagnosed with the disease every year. The CPA notes that the narrowing of the gender gap in regard to pancreatic cancer cases could be due to the rise in female smokers, an increase that began decades ago.

Historical Starr County
La Santa Cruz (The Holy Cross) Future Texas Historical Marker site
Starr County is well known for its hot and arid summers. When rain is announced the community with much enthusiasm welcomes any chance of rain. As you drive along the eastern part of highway 83 as you exit Rio Grande City you will see the Santa Cruz on top of a hill constantly
reminding us of that well known drought in the late 1800’s. The Cross serves as a constant reminder that our ancestors had faith and it was through that devotion and faith that allowed them to survive harsh times. During the month of May (May 3rd) many local and Valley faithful flock to the Santa Cruz and dare climb up the hill and offer thanks and remembrance. The site has become a well-known
tourist site in our region that local historians are pushing to make the Santa Cruz a Texas Historical Marker Site. Below is what is the draft write up for submission to the Historical Commission: La Santa, or the Holy Cross was erected in the late 1800s by the Peña family on La Loma de
la Santa Cruz, a hill located on the eastern side of Rio Grande City. According to tradition, the Peña’s and fellow members of the community, all suffering from seven years of severe drought (c. early 1900s), would often visit the hill in prayer and supplication. The supplicants would eventually lead a procession from the hill to the banks of the Rio Grande and back again, all the while praying for rain and pledging an offering of the year’s first crops. Miraculously, the muchneeded rain came in the night. The thankful Peña family and fellow worshippers kept their pledge, and on each May 3rd thereafter, a pilgrimage takes place from the base of the hill to the where stands the Holy Cross. The first crucifix erected on the hill measured 8’9’’in height by 5’6’’ in width and was hewn from an ebony tree located near Mr. Domingo Pena’s ranch. It was later replaced with

one made of iron. Over time, various members of the Peña took possession of the original wooden cross, which now resides with Mr. Maximo Peña, Jr. of Rio Grande City, Texas. Today, the property remains part of the Pena family under direction of Mr. Cecilio Rodriguez Sr. from McAllen, Texas. The future of the Santa Cruz is uncertain, but many locals would like to see stairs and railings added to the steep climb and make it into a tourist attraction. La Santa Cruz belongs to the people and forever will be a Starr County icon. - The Santa Cruz is open to the public at no charge. However, we do ask to help keep the area clean. Best time to climb the Santa Cruz is after 5:00 PM or cooler temperatures. Also, while you visit with us, we ask you and your family to dine in our restaurants – great food, good people.
