Colorectal cancer remains the second leading cause of cancer death in Texas, despite being one of the few preventable cancers, and it’s estimated that over 11,000 Texans will receive a diagnosis this year.
The bill passed on May 18, 2021, with a unanimous vote by the legislature, mere hours following the announcement of new recommendations by the United States Preventive Services Task Force which too lowered the age to begin colorectal screening from 50 to 45 and became effective on September 1, 2021.

Alvarado has devoted 28 years of service to education as a teacher, principal, program administrator, and superintendent. She hails from a family of educators including her mother Alma, a teacher of 31 years, and her father, the late Hilario “Lalo”, a teacher, coach, counselor, principal, and Superintendent of San Isidro ISD. Alvarado is a 1990 graduate of San Isidro High School.
On April 29, 2022, Governor Greg Abbott announced the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) is providing more than $317.9 million in emergency Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) food bene ts for the month of May. e allotments are expected to help about 1.6 million Texas households.
“ e extension of emergency SNAP bene ts for May will help ensure that families can put nutritious food on their tables,” said Governor Abbott. “We are grateful to HHSC and USDA for the continued e ort to provide support for families across Texas.”

HHSC received federal approval from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to extend the maximum, allowable amount of SNAP bene ts to recipients based on family size, and all SNAP households will receive a minimum of $95 in emergency allotments. is additional emergency allotment should appear in recipients’ accounts by May 31. e emergency May allotments are in addition to the more than $6.7 billion in bene ts previously provided to Texans since April 2020.
Administered by HHSC, SNAP is a federal program that provides food assistance to eligible lowincome families and individuals in Texas. Texans in need can apply for bene ts, including SNAP and Medicaid, at YourTexasBene ts. com or use the Your Texas Bene ts mobile app to manage their bene ts.
