Body dysmorphic disorder a reality for many women People from all walks of life may have something about their appearances that upsets them. While many people learn to embrace their bodies, some develop body image problems that can lead to depression and anxiety. Body dysmorphic disorder, or BDD, is a psychological condition that causes delusions about one’s outward appearance. While people with BDD may have delusions about any part of their bodies, many people with BDD have
ST. JUDE NOVENA May the Sacred Heart of Jesus be adored, glorified, loved and preserved throughout the world now and forever. Sacred Heart of Jesus pray for us. Holy Mary, Mother of Jesus, pray for us, St. Jude, worker of miracles, pray for us. (Say this nine times a day, by the 8th day your prayer will be answered. Say it nine days, it has never been known to fail. Publication must be promised.) Thank you St. Jude.

problems with parts of their face, their ears or the shape of their head. Preoccupation with these features can be so intense that it’s difficult for sufferers to see beyond their delusions. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, BDD may be triggered by a slight physical imperfection. But to those with the condition, the flaw is perceived to be prominent - causing severe emotional distress and difficulties in daily functioning. BDD is not exclusive to women, as it affects nearly as many men as women. Research conducted by Butler Hospital in Providence, RI, found that, among 188 subjects, BDD diagnosis was relatively equal among women and men (49 and 51 percent, respectively). Women with BDD were found to be more preoccupied with skin, weight and their hip size, while the men studied were concerned about thinning hair, body build and genital appearance. BDD usually develops in adolescence, says the BDD Foundation. This is a time when people become more sensitive about their appearances. Recognizing the symptoms of BDD can help a person get
help more quickly, which can potentially head off harmful behavior, including suicide attempts. The following are some of the more common symptoms of BDD, according to ADAA: camouflaging (with body position, clothing, makeup, hair, hats, etc.); comparing body parts to others’ appearance; seeking surgery; checking in a mirror; avoiding mirrors; skin picking; grooming excessively; exercising excessively; changing clothes excessively. Those with BDD also may experience symptoms similar to those experienced by people with obsessive-compulsive disorder or social anxiety disorder. In many instances, people with BDD may suffer from a combination of mental health disorders. There are some effective treatments for BDD. Such treatments include cognitivebehavioral therapy, or CBT, which teaches patients to recognize and change negative thinking patterns. Antidepressant medications may be prescribed as well. People who suspect they or a loved one is suffering from BDD should first visit their general practitioners. Social workers, psychologists and psychiatrists may also help people with BDD.

Texas Farm Credit Launches Youth Video Showcase with $20,000 in Cash Prizes Texas Farm Credit recently launched a virtual contest encouraging local youth to submit a video spotlighting their agricultural project for a chance to win a portion of the $20,000 cash prize. The Texas Farm Credit Youth Ag Video Showcase aims to support the passion of ag students in lieu of canceled stock shows and other ag-related events and contests due to COVID-19. “This employee driven initiative is our way of encouraging kids who are interested in agriculture to keep on going,” said Dustin McClendon, Relationship Manager. “We want them to know that we understand they’ve had a tough year, and we’re doing what we can to support them.” The contest is open to youth ages 8-18 as of January 1, 2020, who are involved in agriculture. They must also reside within Texas Farm Credit’s 100-county territory (Starr County) or have immediate family that are customers of Texas Farm Credit. The contest has two
age divisions: Junior for ages 8-13 and Senior for ages 14-18. Video submissions must be 2-3 minutes long and answer the question, “What is your past, current, or future agricultural project and what life lessons have you learned from your experience?” Participants are encouraged to explain their project in detail, demonstrate the goals they have accomplished, and outline their future plans. All video submissions are due by 11:59 pm on December 31, 2020 and must be submitted electronically. Each participant is limited to one entry. Additional details, instructions, rules, and disclaimers, along with the entry form, can be found on the showcase webpage at www. TexasFarmCredit.com/Showcase. Entries are not limited to specific categories. All videos will be judged using the same scorecard whether it be livestock, science research, equipment, food production, welding, plant growth, stitchery, wildlife conservation, or
any other type of ag related project or passion. The entries will be judged by a selection committee using the contest scorecard located on the showcase webpage. The judging scorecard gives points for overall presentation, creativity, design, content, and organization. All winners will be announced by the end of January 2021. Prize money will be awarded to the top eight winners in each age division. Donations will also be made to the 4H club, FFA chapter, or approved charitable organization of the top five winners’ choice in each age division. All prize amounts are listed on the showcase webpage. The Youth Ag Video Showcase is part of Texas Farm Credit’s Passion Forward program which has a goal of giving backing 2% of their annual net income to local communities each year. Headquartered in Robstown, Texas, it serves 100 Texas counties and is part of the Farm Credit System, a nationwide network of rural lending cooperatives established in 1916.

Governor Abbott, TEA Establish TDLR Statement Regarding Targeted Education Funds for Families Approval of UT-RGV Podiatry School Of Students With Cognitive Disabilities The Texas Higher Education footcare to a traditionally
Program provides up to $1,500 dollars per eligible student for Texas families to purchase supplementary special education services Governor Greg Abbott and the Texas Education Agency (TEA) announced the establishment of the Supplementary Special Education Services (SSES) program to connect eligible students with severe cognitive disabilities with additional support for the critical services they require. This studentcentered SSES program will help connect Texas families to highquality, personalized services through a one-time funding allocation that aims to help offset learning disruptions related to COVID-19. Qualifying families will gain access to a targeted spending account to purchase services costing up to $1,500 dollars per eligible student. Through this funding source, Texas families can purchase supplemental supports such as tutoring, therapy, and digital resources through vendors approved and vetted by TEA. The purchased services are intended to be supplementary and do not remove responsibility from Texas public school systems to provide the educational services outlined in each eligible student’s Admission, Review, and
Dismissal (ARD) plan. Families of students enrolled in public school during the 2020-2021 school year that were enrolled during the initial COVID-19 closures in Spring 2020 and have been identified as having a low incidence disability will qualify. Nearly 59,000 students statewide are eligible to benefit from this new program. Participation priority will be given to families receiving income assistance and/or families that have documented financial need. “This program is a win for Texas families and children with special education needs, many of whom have endured education disruptions due to COVID-19,” said Governor Abbott. “Education is vital to the future of every Texas child, and every student is entitled to a highquality education. The SSES program further advances Texas’ mission to improve outcomes for students with disabilities. This innovative initiative builds on the services that students are already receiving at school, and provides additional resources and support at a pivotal moment in the lives of Texas families and their children.”

Prepares for Session Focused on COVID-19, Budget Senator Judith Zaffirini, D-Laredo, was re-elected to the Texas Senate on Tuesday in another resounding victory, winning greater than 60 percent of the 277,744 votes cast. “Because of the pandemic, this campaign has been so different, but we’ve employed traditional and innovative means of engaging constituents,” the senator said. “Our public and targeted Zooms posted on Facebook, for example, have been viewed more than 350,000 times. We honored our tradition of prioritizing Senate responsibilities while campaigning, which always is challenging--and the hallmark of our public service. “Our campaign was positive, not negative; unifying, not divisive; and issue-oriented, not insulting. We focused on building on our record of success as the foundation for providing a better future for our families. “I thank everyone who voted
in this election, especially those who voted for me. I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue to collaborate with everyone interested in making a difference for the families of our district and of our great state. Now is the time to unite in mitigating the impact of the pandemic and in addressing our priority issues, including education, health, jobs, and the environment.” ZAFFIRINI, page 5

GFWC Florence J. Scott Woman’s Club of Rio Grande City joins the General Federation of Women’s Clubs in promoting awareness and prevention of domestic violence. They proudly promoted and attended the “Day of Remembrance,” as they have for the eighteen years it has been observed in Starr County. This year’s observance was unique in that it was held in front of the courthouse and conducted for drive by or walk by observance. The event, conducted by the Victims of Domestic Violence Assistance Program with the support of the Starr County Attorney’s Office, the County of Starr, and United Way, features a display representing 18 Starr County people who have lost their lives as a victim of domestic violence, and a single figure representing the unknown victims who have died as a result of domestic violence and have been inappropriately misclassified. Many individuals and groups attended the display and paid their respects, including the local press and Channel 4 Television from the Rio Grande Valley. The courthouse maintained a banner promoting awareness of the observance and their lighted “HOPE” sign throughout the month.

Until We Meet Again
Each morning when we awake we know that you are gone. And no one knows the heartache as we try to carry on. Our hearts still ache with sadness and many tears still low. What it meant to lose you, no one will ever know. Our thoughts are always with you, your place no one can ill. In life we loved you dearly, In death we love you still. There will always be a heartache, and often a silent tear, But always a precious memory of the days when you were here. If tears could make a staircase, and heartaches make a lane, We’d walk the path to heaven and bring you home again. We hold you close within our hearts, and there you will remain, to walk with us throughout our lives until we meet again.

In Loving Memory of July 20, 1954 † November 13, 2019
It has been one year since you went home to be with our Lord. It broke my heart to lose you. But you didn’t go alone, for part of me went with you the day God called you home. I often sit and think of you and think of how you died, to think I couldn’t say good-bye before you closed your eyes. I suffer so much sorrow, and its never-ending grief, which I must bear, until I breathe my last farewell and inally meet you there.

Our lives go on without you But nothing is the same, We have to hide our heartaches When someone speaks your name. Sad are the hearts that love you Silent the tears that fall, Living our hearts without you Is the hardest part of all. You did so many things for us Your heart was kind and true, And when we needed someone We could always count on you. The special years will not return When we were all together, But with the love within our hearts You will walk with us forever.

ZAFFIRINI Continued from Front Page With the campaign concluded, Senator Zaffirini and her staff will focus on the legislative session that convenes on Jan. 12. Legislators will respond to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, a sizable budget shortfall, and the once-perdecade legislative and congressional redistricting. She also will continue to advocate for greater investment
in public education, especially early childhood and higher education, and for health and human services, including Medicaid expansion. “This is a challenging time for Texas families,” Senator Zaffirini said. “The voters made it clear that they want their elected representatives to collaborate in addressing real issues, and I
look forward to working with my colleagues in both parties to do just that.” She said that on Nov. 9, the first day of pre-filing bills for the 2021 legislative session, she will file legislation to offer student loan relief to frontline workers, make college tuition-free for working Texans, expand pre-K, protect consumers,
preserve our state’s natural splendor, and much more. “I’m excited about our ambitious agenda that matches our state’s untapped potential.” The senator repeated her invitation to constituents to contact her and her staff via judith. zaffirini@senate.texas.gov or 512/463-0121 whenever they can be of assistance.

Veterans Day Recognition Letter November 11, 2020 On November 11th of each year, Americans have honored those men and women who have served in the U.S. Armed Services since the armistice which ended World War I was declared on November 11, 1918. Veterans are women and men from our communities who committed themselves carte blanche to the USA in the Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, or Coast Guard and put their life on the line for our freedom. As we honor their service, let’s also recognize veterans’ ongoing
contributions. After taking off service uniforms, they bring their experiences and expertise to strengthen our society. Veterans become valued members of our communities as active volunteers, leaders, entrepreneurs, mentors and our friends. How can we honor our veterans? It can be as simple as personally thanking them for their service. In Texas, we take care of our veterans. I encourage veterans to access the benefits and services they earned for themselves and their family by connecting with
the Texas Veterans Commission at tvc.texas.gov. To all our Texas veterans, please know that you have our gratitude and our unwavering support on Veterans Day and every day of the year.

Governor Abbott, HHSC Announce Extension of Emergency SNAP Benefits for November 2020 On November 5, 2020, Governor Greg Abbott announced that the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) will provide approximately $202 million in emergency Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) food benefits for the month of November as the state continues its response to the COVID-19 pandemic. “We will continue to ensure Texans can provide nutritious food for their families throughout the COVID-19 response,” said Governor Abbott. “I thank our partners at the USDA for extending these emergency benefits for the month of November.”
“As we head into November and the holiday season, we want to ensure that Texans can get nutritious food for their families who may be spending more time at home,” said Texas HHS Access and Eligibility Services Deputy Executive Commissioner Wayne Salter. “These continued benefits will ensure eligible Texans receive the help they need during these uncertain times.” More than 1 million SNAP households will see the additional amount on their Lone Star Card. The emergency November allotments are in addition to the almost $1.5 billion in benefits
previously provided to Texans between April and October. HHSC received federal approval from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to extend the maximum, allowable amount of SNAP benefits to recipients based on family size. Administered by HHSC, SNAP is a federal program that provides food assistance to approximately 1.4 million eligible low-income families and individuals in Texas. Texans in need can apply for benefits, including SNAP and Medicaid, at YourTexasBenefits. com or use the Your Texas Benefits mobile app to manage their benefits.

A golden-headed scallopwing is a tiny delight A few days ago I was wandering past a clump of purple-flowered lantana when a movement caught my eye. It was a tiny blackish butterfly flitting about. When it paused a few seconds, I noted that it had a wing span o f only about a n inch, h a d dark sooty wings and, most significantly, had a yellow-gold colored head. I’d occasionally seen one before. It was a goldenheaded scallopwing.

weight by eating healthy and being more active can cut your risk of getting type 2 diabetes in half. Cynthia Took Control of Her Health: You Can Too Cynthia Johnson didn’t always make health a priority. “I was overweight, making all the wrong choices,” she says. “I knew I should be doing something, but I wasn’t motivated to do so.” She visited her doctor and
found out she had prediabetes, a condition that affects 1 in 3 American adults. Prediabetes means a person’s blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not yet high enough for type 2 diabetes. Her doctor told her it was time to start making some changes in her life, so Cynthia signed up for a CDC-led National Diabetes Prevention Program (National DPP) lifestyle change program.

RGCCISD Family, After numerous attempts, the Texas Education Agency has allowed our district to continue to transition our students as long as we commit to open our schools to ALL students who choose to attend on-campus instruction by December 14, 2020. The option to remain in remote instruction will not be impacted in any way, and those parents who want to keep their children engaged in remote instruction can continue in that particular mode of instruction. Parents WILL ALWAYS have a choice to keep their children at home during this pandemic. Rio Grande City CISD remains committed to keeping all students and staff safe during this health crisis. Students who are currently attending on-campus instruction will remain in their current setting, and the district will continue to provide instructional support to these students with the existing academic tutors and teacher volunteers until after the Thanksgiving Holidays when we will be opening our campuses to any new students wanting to return to on-campus instruction. We will begin the Texas Education Agency required transition process beginning November 30, 2020. We will be implementing a phase-in transition period by bringing in additional student populations weekly starting the week of November 30th leading up to December 14, 2020. Details of this tentative transition process are as follows: November 30-December 4, 2020 Grades 3-6, HS EOC December Re-testers, & All Special Education Students December 7-11, 2020 PreK-2, 7-8, December EOC Re-testers December 14, 2020 and thereafter Campuses will be open to ALL Students requesting on-campus instruction
The district will utilize Friday, November 13th as a teacher workday and the week of November 16-20 to work with teachers and administrators on a plan that will facilitate the best instructional setting for all students. Because the majority of the RGCCISD student population has elected to remain at home, the district will staff campuses with certified teachers based on those needs.
Respectfully, Ms. Vilma Garza Rio Grande City Consolidated Independent School District Superintendent
The program offers support with her goals of losing weight, eating healthier, and exercising more. Now she’s lost weight and is feeling better than ever. November is National Diabetes Month, so it’s the perfect time to try what Cynthia did. Join a program that can help you prevent or delay type 2 diabetes. You will get a full year of support designed to help you make lasting lifestyle changes to prevent or delay type 2 diabetes. You will learn, laugh, share stories, try new things, and build new habits—all while lowering your risk of type 2 diabetes and improving your health. Throughout the program, you will work with a trained lifestyle coach to learn: •how to eat and prepare healthy dishes without giving up all the foods you love, •how to add physical activity to
your life even if you don’t think you have time, •how to deal with stress, and •how to maintain the changes you’ve made. “I enjoy the class. We’ve had a lot of laughs,” Cynthia says. “I’ve learned that I need to be in a group setting because we support each other. Our class coach is amazing. She’s a positive person, a cheerleader, and she tells us that even though we make mistakes, they’re not permanent. We can learn from them and maybe make different choices in the future.” “After participating in this program, I’m more conscious of what I need to do to live better,” says Cynthia. “I’m doing this for me so that I can live a long and healthy life.” Learn to prevent or delay type 2 diabetes. Join a diabetes prevention program in Texas.

Rattlers Fall to S.A. Legacy Titans 41-20 in 2020 District Opener
By Kenneth Roberts, Freelance Writer
The San Antonio Legacy Titans utilized a strong running game and stingy defense to defeat the Rio Grande City Rattlers 41-20 in the District 14-5A Division I opener for both teams on Friday night, Oct. 30 at Joe R. Sanchez Stadium. After playing two non-district games on Oct. 16 and 23, the Rattlers launched district play Friday night in the 2020 season that was delayed and has been cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Rattlers are scheduled to play six district games and eight regular season contests, with the regular season scheduled to end on Dec. 4. After a scoreless first quarter, the Titans scored early in the second
period and took a 13-6 advantage into halftime. In the third stanza, Legacy built its margin to 27-6 before the Rattlers recovered a bad snap in the end zone for a touchdown to narrow the deficit to 27-14 going into the final quarter. The Titans scored two fourth quarter touchdowns and the Rattlers reached the end zone once to create the final 41-20 margin. Marc Perez rushed for two touchdowns for the Rattlers and caught a 44-yard pass that set up the third and final score. Rattler defender Rafael Benitez fell on an errant snap in the end zone for a third quarter touchdown. Michael Ramos passed to Michael Chapa for a two-point conversion after the third quarter score.
Motorists Urged to Take Simple Safety Precaution
TxDOT’s “Click It or Ticket” campaign reminds drivers and passengers about the importance of wearing seat belts With health and safety a top priority for millions of Texans, TxDOT reminds motorists of one of the simplest and easiest precautions everyone can take to protect themselves and their loved ones: buckling up. Wearing a seat belt reduces the risk of dying by 45% for people in the front seat of passenger cars. For those in pickups, seat belts reduce the risk of dying by 60% since pickups are more likely to roll over than passenger vehicles. “Our annual Click It or Ticket campaign is about saving lives,” said TxDOT Executive Director James Bass. “While almost 91% of Texans have gotten into the habit of using seat belts, there are still far too many motorists who are taking unnecessary chances by not buckling up. Whether you’re the driver or a passenger, wearing a seat belt—day and night—is the single most effective way to protect yourself from serious injury or death in a crash.” TxDOT officials report that in 2019 there were 925 traffic fatalities involving an unbuckled driver or passenger, a 6% drop over the previous year. Although around 9% of Texans do not wear a seat belt, the lack of seat belt usage was reported in 42% of traffic fatalities for those people who had the option to use a seat belt (excluding pedestrian, bicycle and motorcycle fatalities). In addition, a 2019 Texas A&M Transportation Institute survey noted that drivers and passengers in 18 Texas cities buckle up less at night (between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.) than during the day. In Texas last year, of crashes in which an unbuckled driver or passenger was killed, 59% happened during nighttime hours (6 p.m. to 5:59 a.m.). Seat belt use among pickup drivers and passengers also continues to lag behind that of other motorists. Almost 46% of the 499 pickup drivers killed in crashes last year weren’t buckled up. From November 16 to November 29, as we approach and celebrate Thanksgiving and more drivers take to the road, state troopers, police officers and sheriffs’ deputies statewide will step up enforcement of the state’s seat belt and child car seat laws. Texas law requires everyone in a vehicle to
be properly secured in the front or back seat or face fines and fees up to $200. Children younger than 8 years must be restrained in a child safety seat or booster seat unless they are taller than 4 feet 9 inches. If a child isn’t secured, the driver faces fines of up to $250. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the Click It or Ticket initiative in Texas is estimated to have saved more than 6,234 lives, prevented more than 100,000 serious injuries, and resulted in $23.6 billion in economic savings since the campaign began in 2002. The Click It or Ticket campaign is a key component of #EndTheStreakTX, a broader social media and word-of-mouth effort that encourages drivers to make safer choices while behind the wheel such as wearing a seat belt, driving the speed limit, never texting and driving, and never driving under the influence of alcohol or other drugs. November 7, 2000 was the last deathless day on Texas roadways. #EndTheStreakTX asks all Texans to commit to driving safely to help end the streak of daily deaths on Texas roadways.

Texas Roads Have Not Had a Fatality Free Day Since November 7, 2000 What if … We Could All Take Responsibility and End the Streak! It has been 20 years since Texas could claim a day where there were no fatalities on our roads. November 7, Texas marks 20 years of daily deaths on our roadways with more than 70,000 people killed since 2000. According to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) every day in Texas
nearly 10 people are killed in traffic crashes with the leading causes of these deadly crashes continuing to be failure to stay in one lane, alcohol, speed and distracted driving. TxDOT is promoting the “End the Streak” campaign to help end motor vehicle fatalities in Texas. The road to ending the streak is not impossible. In Texas there were 23 counties with zero fatalities in 2019.
The pandemic has taught us all about the importance of shared responsibility. Ending this streak of needless tragedy on Texas roadways is also a shared responsibility. While it is considered socially unacceptable to drink and drive and most people would think twice about drinking and driving or riding with a drunk driver, riding with a driver who is speeding, not buckled up, using

their phone while driving or driving in any reckless manner has not reached the threshold of being socially unacceptable yet. Drivers and passengers can change that by taking responsibility for each other’s safe driving. What if for one day everyone took responsibility for themselves and their friends and there were no drunk drivers on our roads? And there was not one person driving somewhere to drink without a plan for a sober ride home — and no underage drunk drivers were to be found anywhere. What if everyone made sure that the driver and all passengers in the vehicle were buckled up? And, that all children were riding in the correct car seat for their age, weight and height and the seat was installed correctly. What if everyone took responsibility to make sure that no driver was speeding down
the road, but was instead driving within the speed limit, including slowing down for construction and emergency vehicles, and driving more slowly and cautiously during bad weather conditions? What if everyone made sure that they did not drive distracted or ride with anyone who was driving distracted? And, that no teens were riding with other teens, which is the main source of their distractions and against the law according to the Graduated Driver License Law. What if no youth or adult was driving while using a cell phone and totally concentrating on their driving? What if everyone took the responsibility to make sure that they were not driving drowsy and passengers made sure that their driver was rested and alert? What if there were no drowsy drivers on the road and every driver, including commercial drivers, made sure
they were well rested and prepared for the trip? What if everyone took responsibility to drive defensively and civilly and passengers made sure they would only ride with a driver who treated the lives of others on the road with respect? What if everyone took on these responsibilities and Texas could once again enjoy a day where there was not one fatality on our roads? Then, we could put an end to this terrible streak of roadway deaths in Texas — and it would bear repeating! Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Community Health Educator Elva Yolanda Morado, Starr County reminds us that these do not have to be just rhetorical questions. Save Electricity While Working Remotely Increased time at home causing higher bills As American families and businesses transition to remote work to slow the spread of COVID-19, many have seen a surge in home energy use—and in electric bills. Simple moneysaving steps can help lower your bills without jeopardizing safety or comfort. These simple steps include: •Program your thermostat to maximize energy savings. Setting your thermostat 1 degree lower when heating or 1 degree higher when cooling can reduce energy use by up to 5%. The best way to do this is using a smart or programable thermostat. Medina EC offers members a rebate for installing a programmable thermostat. Learn more at MedinaEC.org/Rebates. •Do only full loads of laundry and wash with cold water. Using warm water instead of hot can cut a load’s energy use in half, and using cold water saves even more. •Air-dry dishes. This can cut your dishwasher’s energy use by
up to 50%. •Replace incandescent lightbulbs with LEDs. Lighting can amount to up to 12% of monthly energy use. LEDs can cut lighting costs by 75%. •Unplug appliances and electronics when not in use. Small appliances and electronics use energy even when not in use. When powered on, game consoles, TVs and similar electronics are responsible for up to 12% of a home’s energy use. “Medina EC realizes that more of our members are working and learning from home than ever before, creating an increase in their electric use and electric bill. Education, Training and Information is one of our cooperative principles, and we think energy efficiency education, and as a result saving money, is important to all our members,” stated Medina EC’s CEO, Mark Rollans. For more energy-conservation tips, visit MedinaEC.org/ EnergySavings.

Hundreds of New E-books Available to Texas Delta Theta Master Meets, Plans Projects Texas Delta Theta Master of Beta Texans through their Public Libraries Sigma Phi held several meetings in The Texas State Library and Archives Commission has purchased licenses for new e-books that are now available through the E-Read Texas program. E-Read Texas is an online program that makes electronic books freely available through the SimplyE app, which is easily downloadable at no cost through an app store. The program was created to support digital content for libraries serving communities with populations under 100,000. The new titles, which include a special curated list of 600 books for children K-8, can be accessed through any mobile device or computer. The public can also access other electronic resources available through their local library and other state electronic resources, including online journals, magazines, videos, and
other e-books through the TexShare library, another service of TSLAC. The most recent additions to the E-Read Texas program offer an exciting library on different life and educational areas such as nutrition and diet related resources, including many cookbooks. The collection geared for K-8 features educational titles curated by teachers and the TIME for Kids series. The majority of the titles comprise juvenile nonfiction, including science, mathematics, sports, history, and art in both English and Spanish. The collection also features a library of Texas-related works. Published by the Texas Book Consortium, these books come from university and small presses, including Texas A&M University Press, TCU Press, Stephen F. Austin State University Press,
Texas Review Press, and Texas State Historical Association Press. With more than 700 titles, the collection focuses on Texas history, geography, nature, and many other topics. The library features many Texas authors. There are more than 6,000 e-books currently available in the E-Read Texas collection, and almost 100 Texas public libraries participate in the program. E-Read Texas focuses mainly on materials for adults and includes fiction and popular non-fiction. E-Read Texas also purchases young adult crossover materials. Prediabetes Risk Factors
It’s cute, only 1/4 ounce, and a winter Texan
One of the most endearing of the many migratory birds that spend the winter with us is the ruby-crowned kinglet. It is, by any measure, a tiny bird. Only about 4 inches long, with a wing-span of 7 inches, it weighs a mere 1/4 once. T a k e three pennies in your h a n d and you can feel how amazingly light they are. A ruby-throated hummingbird for comparison weighs about 1/7 once; that’s about 2 pennies.
Being winter Texans, the kinglets can be expected to arrive soon, spend the winter months and depart, in the spring, to fly to their breeding grounds in the north. We have to enjoy them while they’re here. Ruby-crowned kinglets are members of the old-world warbler family and spend their time searching through fallen leaves and amongst the branches of trees for insects, their larvae and eggs. While hunting insects, they sometimes flit their wings as if in an attempt to scare some insects into moving and revealing themselves. If insects are scarce, kinglets are known to occasionally eat seeds and berries. They’re stubby, plump looking
birds and, if you get a good look, you’ll see one or two wing-bars. The upper wing-bar is often inconspicuous. If you get an even better look, you’ll observe that there’s a white ring around each eye. These eye rings are very distinctive because they’re what we call broken eye-rings. They’re not complete circles. There’s a gap at the top and bottom of the eye. The black legs have yellow feet. One of the pleasant things about ruby-crowned kinglets is the fact that they’re quite approachable. They allow to come close for good viewing if you’re cautious. The feathers on the back are olive and those on the underside are whitish with a tinge of tan.
The bill is black, thin and pointed. The tail is short and has a notched e n d . D o n ’ t s p e n d much time trying to see the rubycrown since it’s seldom visible. The best chance to see it is if you happen to see a male taking a bath. Ruby-crowned kinglets do no harm and are very beneficial as they help keep the insect population under control. Habitat loss, especially of wooded areas, is a threat to their survival. Let’s hope that we can have them as winter Texans for many years to come.
Prediabetes means you have a higher than normal blood sugar level. It’s not high enough to be considered type 2 diabetes yet, but without lifestyle changes, adults and children with prediabetes are more likely to develop type 2 diabetes. Prediabetes risk factors include: being age 45 or older, being overweight, having family history or gestational diabetes during pregnancy. Take the prediabetes risk test. Most people with prediabetes don’t have any symptoms. However, prediabetes can develop into type 2 diabetes. When this happens, symptoms can start to occur. What is Type 2 diabetes? Diabetes is a disease that occurs when your blood glucose (often called blood sugar) is too high. Blood glucose comes from the
food you eat It is your body’s main source of energy. Insulin, a hormone made by the pancreas, helps the glucose get into your cells so it can be used for energy. When you have Type 2 diabetes, your body doesn’t make enough insulin or doesn’t use insulin well. This causes too much glucose to stay in your blood. Then your cells don’t get enough. More than 30 million people in the United States have diabetes. That is about 1 in every 10 people and 90 to 95 percent of them have Type 2 diabetes. In most cases, people who develop Type 2 diabetes are age 45 and older. It also is becoming more common for children, teens and young adults to develop it. However, there is some good news. You can prevent or delay developing Type 2 diabetes with some lifestyle changes.

Governor Abbott Provides Update on Bamlanivimab Distribution to Hospitals Across Texas
Governor Greg Abbott traveled to Lubbock to hold a briefing with local officials and provide an update on the the distribution of bamlanivimab, the Eli Lilly & Company monoclonal antibody therapy for COVID-19. The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) has allocated this initial shipment of bamlanivimab to acute care hospitals across Texas, including
hospitals in Lubbock, with additional doses expected to be shipped each week. DSHS prioritized communities with high COVID-19 disease burden for this initial allotment through a formula that included total new case counts in the area, new C O V I D - 1 9 hospital admissions and total COVID-19 hospital patients. “Every day, the Lone Star State is closer to turning the corner of this pandemic thanks to medical advancements like bamlanivimab,” said Governor Abbott. “This therapy drug will help prevent hospitalizations and reduce the strain on our healthcare system and workers. However, as encouraging as these advancements are, there is still no substitute for personal responsibility. The State urges all Texans to continue to wear a mask, social distance, and wash

your hands, especially as we head into the holiday season.” Bamlanivimab is for outpatients with mild to moderate COVID-19 who are aged 12 years or older and are at higher risk of severe disease. It has been shown to prevent hospitalizations in some patients when used before they become very sick. This initial allocation is phase one and focused on hospitals; phase two may be broader and include other facility types like nursing homes and infusion centers. Hospitals that were allocated doses should have received or will be receiving calls about their allocations over the next few days from AmerisourceBergen, the same distributor as remdesivir. Hospitals can accept or decline their allocation. Declined doses will be reallocated to other Texas hospitals.
Do your part to slow the spread and save lives: • Stay home when possible. • Wear a mask over your mouth AND nose. • Stay at least 6 feet apart from people who do not live in your household and avoid crowds. • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.

The Broken Chain
We little knew that morning that God was going to call your name. In life we loved you dearly, in death we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you, you did not go alone for part of us went with you, the day that God called you home. You left us beautiful memories, your love is still our guide, and though we cannot see you, you are always by our side. Our family chain is broken and nothing seems the same; but as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again.
We want to give our most sincere thanks to all our relatives and friends who have continued to pray for us during this time of sorrow in the loss of our father Pedro Peña, Jr. Thank you for your comforting words, flowers, cards, food, and condolences during our time of grief. May God bless you, and we will always remember your presence and comforting words.

If Tears Could Build A Stairway
If tears could build a stairway and thoughts a memory lane I’d walk right up to heaven and bring you home again. No farewell words were spoken, no time to say good-bye, you were gone before I knew it and only God knows why. My heart’s still active in sadness and secret tears still low, what it meant to lose you no one can ever know. But now I know you want us to mourn for you no more, to remember all the happy times, life still has much in store. Since you’ll never be forgotten I pledge to you today a hallowed place within my heart is where you’ll always stay. God knows why, with chilling touch, death gathers those we love so much, and what now seems so strange and dim will all be clear when we meet Him. I knew you for a moment.

Sigmoria millipedes have lots of legs
Birds and people have two legs each. Lizards, cats and elephants have four. Butterflies, ants and roaches have six. Spiders have eight. And, millipedes have --- a thousand? No. But they can have close to a hundred! Unlike most animals which have three body parts, head, abdomen and thorax, the millipedes have bodies with many segments. Each segment has not one but two pair of legs. That adds up to a lot of
legs. (Centipedes have only one pair per segment.) Numerous jokes refer to a millipede being asked how he coordinates all those legs and, after unsuccessfully trying to figure it out, the millipede couldn’t walk again. Actually, if you observe one closely, you see a well coordinated rhythmic motion but they crawl rather slowly. Millipedes are arthropods as are insects and spiders. That is, they have exoskeletons. Instead of an internal bone structure, as we have, they have an external,
hard shell to which muscles are attached. They breathe through a small hole, called a spiracle, on both sides of each segment, have a single pair of antennae and eyes that can’t do much more than tell light from dark. Their habitat is around and under moist leaf litter. Most are herbivores who eat decaying vegetation. Their diet makes them beneficial since they help to transform vegetation into new soil. Behind their head is a tough scale called a collum. When they’re digging for food, they lower their head and push against the collum using their many feet
for propulsion. Those here in the Valley are harmless and can be safely held; they curl-up when frightened. Their life cycle goes from adult to egg, to nymph, back to adult. The nymphs have only a few segments at first but molt their old exoskeletons as they grow and add new segments in the process. The millipedes here, probably a Sigmoria species named “flat backed millipedes,” grow to about 1 and 1/2 inches and may live about 6 years. I hope you’re as amazed as I am at the diversity of life forms in our Valley environment. Enjoy and conserve!
Message from RGC Economic Development Corporation:
Traditional Thanksgiving gatherings with family and friends are fun but can increase the chances of getting or spreading COVID-19 or the flu. The safest way to celebrate Thanksgiving this year is to celebrate with people in your household. We want to wish everyone a safe holiday season. COVID-19 cases are still on the rise. Protect yourself and your loved ones and help slow the spread in our community. If you do plan to spend Thanksgiving with people outside your household, take steps to make your celebration safer. - Gather outdoors if you can. - Limit the size of gatherings (no more than 10). - Wear a mask. - Stay 6 feet from others. - Wash your hands. - Stay at home. Governor Abbott, DSHS Announce COVID-19 Vaccine Distribution Plan Governor Greg Abbott and the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) announced the guiding principles for Texas’ COVID-19 vaccine allocation process, which will serve as a foundation for the state’s initial distribution for COVID-19 vaccines expected as early as next month. These principles have been established by the Expert Vaccine Allocation Panel (EVAP), created by DSHS to make recommendations on vaccine allocation decisions, including identifying groups that should be vaccinated first to provide the most protection to vulnerable populations and critical state resources. “These guiding principles established by the Expert Vaccine Allocation Panel will ensure that the State of Texas swiftly distributes the COVID-19 vaccine to Texans who voluntarily choose
to be immunized,” said Governor Abbott. “This foundation for the allocation process will help us mitigate the spread of COVID-19 in our communities, protect the most vulnerable Texans, and safeguard crucial state resources.” Texas will initially allocate COVID-19 vaccines based on the following criteria: •Protecting health care workers who fill a critical role in caring for and preserving the lives of COVID-19 patients and maintaining the health care infrastructure for all who need it. •Protecting frontline workers who are at greater risk of contracting COVID-19 due to the nature of their work providing critical services and preserving the economy. •Protecting vulnerable populations who are at greater
risk of severe disease and death if they contract COVID-19. •Mitigating health inequities due to factors such as demographics, poverty, insurance status and geography. •Data-driven allocations using the best available scientific evidence and epidemiology at the
time, allowing for flexibility for local conditions. •Geographic diversity through a balanced approach that considers access in urban and rural communities and in affected ZIP codes. •Transparency through sharing allocations with the
public and seeking public feedback. EVAP has recommended, and the Commissioner of Health John Hellerstedt has approved, health care workers likely to provide direct care for COVID-19 patients and other vulnerable residents to be the first group to
receive the vaccine. This includes staff at hospitals and longterm care facilities, emergency medical services and home health care workers. As part of its ongoing work, EVAP will make recommendations on how and when to roll out vaccine to other critical groups.

DPS Increases Enforcement for Thanksgiving Holiday LEGAL NOTICE •Don’t drink and drive. Make alternate plans if you are consuming alcohol. •Move Over or Slow Down for police, fire, EMS, Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) vehicles and tow trucks stopped on the side of the road with emergency lights activated. Show the same courtesy to fellow drivers who are stopped on the side of the road. This year alone, between Jan. 1 and Nov. 9, DPS issued 11,349 warnings and citations for violations of this law. •Buckle up everyone in the vehicle — it’s the law. •Slow down, especially in bad weather, heavy traffic, unfamiliar areas or construction zones. •Eliminate distractions while driving, including the use of mobile devices. Texas law prohibits the use of portable wireless devices to read, write or send an electronic message
With Thanksgiving right around the corner, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is encouraging drivers to make safety a top priority this holiday, as increased travel can present additional challenges for drivers. As part of the nationwide Operation CARE (Crash Awareness and Reduction Effort) initiative, DPS Troopers will be increasing patrols beginning Wednesday, Nov. 25, through Sunday, Nov. 29. DPS Troopers will be looking for drivers who violate the law, including those who are speeding, driving while intoxicated, failing to wear a seat belt, driving without insurance and not complying with the state’s Move Over, Slow Down law, among other traffic violations. “As we prepare for the Thanksgiving holiday, we want to remind every Texan of their duty to drive defensively and help keep our roadways safe,” said DPS
Director Steven McCraw. “The holidays may look different this year, but it is still up to each of us to obey traffic laws and make safety our top priority behind the wheel.” During DPS’ 2019 enforcement effort, a total of 59,146 warnings and citations were issued, including 6,460 for speeding; 716 for seat belt and child seat violations; 1,247 for driving without insurance; and 406 for violations of Move Over, Slow Down. Last year’s enforcement efforts also resulted in 304 DWI arrests, 231 felony arrests and 183 fugitive arrests. In addition to Operation CARE, DPS Troopers are also participating in the annual Click It or Ticket initiative, which runs through Nov. 29, with an emphasis on enforcing seat belt use for both drivers and passengers. DPS offers the following safety tips for the Thanksgiving holiday:

unless the vehicle is stopped. Also, if you’re using a navigation device or app, have a passenger operate it, so you can keep your eyes on the road. •Drive defensively, as holiday travel can present additional challenges. •Don’t drive fatigued — allow plenty of time to reach your destination. •On multi-lane roadways, use the left lane for passing only. Not only is it courteous driving and avoids impeding traffic, Texas law requires slower traffic to keep to the right and to use the left lane for passing only (when posted). •If you can Steer It, Clear It: If you are involved in a non injury crash and your vehicle can be
moved, clear the traffic lanes to minimize traffic impact. Leaving vehicles in a traffic lane increases traffic congestion and leaves those involved with an increased risk of harm or a secondary wreck. On some highways, if you don’t move your vehicle when it’s safe to do so, it’s against the law. •Check your vehicle to make sure it is properly maintained and always ensure your cargo is secure. •Report road hazards or anything suspicious to the nearest law enforcement agency. •Monitor weather and road conditions wherever you are traveling. For road conditions and closures in Texas, visit Drive Texas.
