October is Cancer Awareness Month and Starr County Judge Eloy Vera and Starr County Commissioners would like to promote awareness. Starr County Employees participated in a Cancer Awareness Meeting where April Chapa from The American Cancer Society made a presentation on cancer prevention techniques. Also invited to speak to the staff was Ms. Lorene Lara from geneXe health services who spoke on the benefits of genetic cancer screening to determine hereditary gene mutations that can lead to cancer. The staff was also provided with Mammograms on the Move Bus on the grounds of the Starr County Annex Building and at the Starr County Courthouse. Employees were able to take advantage of all three services at no cost to them. The Wellness Program is geared at providing information to help employees to live healthier lives. We would like to thank Ms. April Chapa and Ms. Myra Solis from American Cancer Society and Ms. Lorene Lara and Ms. Virginia Bodden from geneXe health for their very informative presentations.
In honor of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month the office of Starr County Attorney Victor Canales and his staff held a candlelight vigil on October 17, 2018 in memory of those that have fallen victim to domestic violence and to raise awareness in our community. The FBI estimates that one woman is battered by her intimate partner every 15 seconds, this accounts
for more injuries to women than auto accidents, muggings and rapes combined. An average of at least four women are murdered by domestic violence each and every day in the United States. All citizens are urged to observe this month by becoming aware of the tragedy of domestic violence, supporting those who are working towards its end, and participating in community efforts.

Misa de Cuarto Aniversario En Memoria de
Hortencia Barrera 08-23-1921 † 10-29-2014
Nos has dejado recuerdos hermosos. Tu amor sigue siendo nuestra guía y aunque no podemos verte siempre estás a nuestro lado.

He Only Takes The Best
God saw you getting tired and a cure was not to be. So He put his arms around you and whispered, ‘Come with Me.’ With tearful eyes we watched you slowly fade away, although we loved you dearly, we could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands at rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us... He only takes the best.
We wish to express our deepest appreciation to all of our relatives and friends for their presence, food, lowers, cards, gifts, and condolences during our time of grief for the loss of our beloved one. May God bless you and we will always remember your presence and comforting words.

Print And Share Digital Family Photos
Smartphones and digital cameras have compelled many people to take up photography. But digital photos are often snapped and never seen again, or posted on social media and then forgotten. People who want to make more of their digital photos can preserve their favorite moments by tackling photo projects, such as having photos printed for posterity, in a timely manner. Today’s photo processing apps and services mean tech savvy (and tech not-so-savvy) people can create beautiful photo products on home computers, at digital kiosks or even on mobile devices. One advantage to printing photos is that families will have tangible pictures to view and share. Uploading photos to a service such as Snapfish or Shutterfly also serves as a way to back up prized images. The following are a handful of ways to use photos to prolong special memories. ·Create photo books. Photo books are a fun way to preserve cherished memories. Such books save people the time it takes to manually put prints into a photo album or scrapbook. Software can allow people to auto-fill layouts, add text and embellish photos with graphics. ·Make canvas wall hangings. Families can make their homes look like art galleries by making canvas prints. These products can be produced in various sizes and will look like fine pieces of artwork when the project is completed. ·Explore removable photo squares. One of the latest advancements in photo printing is adhesive photo squares that can be removed and then repositioned as needed. Squares come in various sizes, but 8 x 8 and 10 x 10 are common measurements. These work well for people who do not want to damage their walls. Turning digital photo files into actual prints can help preserve memories.

Texas spotted whiptail lizards are common There are many species of lizards found in Texas. One of the most common here in the Valley is the Texas spotted whiptail. Even after our prolonged very hot Summer, a
little time spent outside is sure to reveal one or more scampering about. They’re fairly easy to identify. First, you’ll notice that they’re very slender 6 to 11 inch lizards with a slim tail which is much longer than the body. Next, note that the top (dorsal) side has multiple light stripes running from the head back to the hind legs but which become indistinct or disappear on the tail. Along the sides you’ll see a row of light spots. Finally observe their gray-brown color which, on the body, very often has a very green cast. The underside
(ventral) is typically white. You may observe seasonal color variation, especially if it’s spring breeding time. Males may have a red throat and blue belly while females may show pink throats. They mate in late spring or early summer and lay 1 to 5 eggs which hatch in late summer. Texas spotted whiptails are not only fun to watch as they scurry about but they’re also harmless and beneficial. They eat termites, caterpillars and insects. They can be found in a variety of habitats from grassy to rocky areas but prefer to be near a source
of water. Since they’re reptiles, they’re cold-blooded, which means they can’t control their body temperature. Their range is limited to our semi-arid southwestern states and down into Mexico. I should mention that there is a very similar lizard found here in the Valley. It’s the Laredo whiptail, a species which is entirely female. They reproduce by parthenogenesis, a process where unfertilized eggs develop and hatch. Their appearance differs from Texas spotted whiptails by having stripes from the head all the way to the tip of tail and no spots on the sides. Treat yourself! Now that the temperatures are moderating, take time for an occasional hike to enjoy the delights of nature.
People across the Valley come home to Rio Motor Company for big savings and family- friendly service!

Did you know? The number of people who smoke is on the decline, as a 2018 report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention noted that the percentage of adults in the United States who smoke cigarettes declined from roughly 21 percent in 2005 to 15.5 percent in 2016. That decline has no doubt helped reduce overall cancer death rates, though the figures regarding smoking-related deaths are still staggering. According to the CDC, smoking accounts for more than 480,000 deaths each year in the United States. The 2018 report from the CDC indicates that men (17.5 percent) are more likely than women (13.5 percent) to smoke cigarettes. In addition, the report notes a correlation between education and the likelihood of smoking
cigarettes. While smoking was lowest among people who had graduate degrees, with only five out of every 100 such adults being smokers, smoking rates were highest (40.6 percent) among adults with graduate education degree certificates, or GEDs.
While people who had no high school diploma were less likely to smoke cigarettes than GED recipients, the CDC report found that smoking rates declined the more education people received.
