was traveling with one of our territory managers a few months ago when I quickly became frustrated after our first visit. We had a great conversation about roses and wrote a nice rose plug order for immediate

shipment (always good to walk away with an order when traveling with your team), but something was missing.

I took the lead with the conversation and started asking our customer why they were not growing more of our woody shrub genetics, particularly Loropetalum Cerise Charm, Gardenia ‘Buttons’ and Moonlit Lace® Viburnum. I explained that all three varieties were far superior to the plants this customer was already growing, and

Akadama™ Hydrangea is definitely a Hydrangea you will want to add to your offering. This is one of the longest blooming Hydrangeas on the market today with its red color changing almost weekly. Add its beautiful, fall foliage color and you have one of the most dynamic flowering shrubs out there. Mike DuVall As the Director of Products at Star® Roses and Plants, Mike DuVall oversees the development, life cycle, strategy, and placement of all woody, rose, and edible products. His position recently expanded from Woody Ornamental Program Manager, through which he successfully led our Woody Program for the past two years. His vast experience and knowledge will now extend this success to the entire Star® Roses and Plants’ product line. Mike is a graduate of the University of Georgia with a degree in Horticulture, and he has over thirty-four years of experience in the industry. Before coming to Star® Roses and Plants, he worked for The Home Depot in Atlanta, Georgia in various management, live goods and product development positions. He received a Ram’s Head Award from The Farmingdale College Foundation for contributions to the horticulture industry, and The Home Depot Edison Award for creation of Drop ‘N Bloom Patio Ready Annuals.

Pete has enjoyed working for Ball® for over thirty years in various positions. Before joining Star® Roses and Plants, Pete was the Founder and General Manager of Ball® Ornamentals for seven years, and before that, he worked in sales management and product development at Ball® Seed where he was also a salesman for a large territory in California. Pete has a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Business Management from Cal Poly, San Luis

Dr. Michele Scheiber Michele oversees all activities related to the Star® Roses and Plants Breeding and New Product Development departments. Michele joined Star® in 2009 as Senior Breeder in the Ornamental Breeding program when the company was known as The Conard-Pyle Company. In this role, she focused on developing novel, herbaceous perennials and shrubs, utilizing traditional breeding and advanced technology. Michele completed her Bachelor’s of Plant Science at Louisiana Tech University and went on to complete her Master’s of Horticulture Science and Doctorate in Philosophy of Horticulture at the University of Georgia. As a graduate student at the University of Georgia, she conducted research on the improvement of woody landscape species through interspecific hybridization, including investigation of physiological and genetic components in the genus Abelia.

Kristen Pullen Kristen Pullen is the Woody Plants Trial Coordinator for Star® Roses and Plants, overseeing a trialing program that evaluates hundreds of new woody ornamental plants each year. Kristen joined Star® Roses and Plants in 2011 after getting her start in horticulture as a research intern at Longwood Gardens, one of the most renowned public gardens in the world. Before overseeing the woody trial program, she worked across all product classes at Star® and assisted in perennial and rose new product development. Kristen completed her Bachelor’s in Biology at Rider University.

Our three-gallons in Pennsylvania put out the same incredible flower power, long bloom window, and sturdy stems that we saw in overseas amenity production. Akadama™ is not a re-bloomer, but it’s a long bloomer, gradually changing flower color based on the age of the bloom. Its flowers started opening in the beginning of May and remained attractive into the beginning of July. Not only do the flowers give you color, but the foliage turns a deep shade of burgundy in the cooler temperatures of spring and fall. If you want an extra eye-catcher, grow this variety in acidic soil like you would for blue-ing up your other macs and Akadama™ will turn an antique purple color.  Give this one a try in smaller containers, as well.
