DEAR FRIENDS
When i think of the history of the Knock Out® Family of Roses, the word that dominates my thoughts is revolutionary. The series not only revolutionized how we think about roses, but it pioneered horticultural product branding. To this day, Knock Out® remains the most prolific flowering shrub ever introduced. How many other plants and plant brands still sell millions of units after being on the market for 25 years?
Sounding like the ‘old guy’ that I am, I can’t believe how quickly those years have flown by. But it’s true: 2025 marks the 25th anniversary of the introduction of the Knock Out® Family of Roses. In this catalog, we are recognizing the history of the brand and looking forward to what’s to come.
As a young sales representative for The Conard-Pyle Co., I vividly remember begging my largest customer to try just 25 of this new, revolutionary rose, and hearing his response: “Roses are dead, don’t ask me again.” Undeterred, I showed up on a Friday afternoon with 25 Knock Out® plants in my pickup truck and urged him again to put them by the cash register, promising I would pick them up Monday morning if they didn’t sell. That weekend he sold every plant and ordered 100 the following week, 200 the next, and so on. I wonder how many orders he’s placed in 25 years?
Stories like this are what we’re excited to celebrate. Our rose and marketing teams have big plans for how we are going to commemorate this anniversary and help you sell more Knock Out® Roses in 2025. As we work to grow the brand with additional colors and forms, above all, we insist on maintaining the standard of disease resistance and reblooming that made the original Knock Out® a rose everyone can grow.
One product category that we have been offering longer than Knock Out® is dormant, fiber pot roses. On page 6 you will see how we have revamped this program with redesigned packaging and four distinct collections that save you time when placing your order.
As with every year, in 2025 we are excited to bring you the best new genetics the rose industry has to offer. Loves Me, Loves Me Not™ (pg. 51) is one of the highest petal count roses ever produced with an incredibly sweet fragrance that earned it immediate inclusion in our Scentables™ program. Brick House® Orange (pg. 71) is a new addition to the Brick House® series that provides the same great disease resistance and compact habit you love from the existing varieties. We’re also introducing two vibrant, non-fading roses, Sunbelt® Garden Flame™ (pg. 81) and Tiamo™ (pg. 68) that help extend the color window at retail. Last, but not least, is a compact, red and yellow striped Floribunda rose aptly named Winning Streak™ (pg. 84).
All of us at SRP are very proud of our introductions and programs and we strive every day to bring you the best of everything so you can be more profitable and successful. We appreciate the trust you place in us to be your rose supplier of choice. You are always welcome to come visit us and see what we’re working on behind the scenes.

CELEBRATING 25 YEARS: KNOCK OUT ® HISTORY
Star ® Roses and Plants receives original Knock Out ® seedling from Will Radler
30 years ago, on May 5, 1992, Will Radler sent us the seedling from the original Knock Out® rose that he bred in his basement. We assigned the code CP4642 to this new seedling. To our surprise, that tiny cutting allowed us to propagate enough material to bud in our test fields in West Grove, PA where hot and humid summers are optimal conditions for black spot testing. With constant blooms, zero disease, and beautiful dark foliage, there just wasn’t anything like it.
Notes from a Star® Roses and Plants’ Accession Book, recording the quality of CP4642 when it was received.

“The reason we think so highly of [Kolorscape® Kardinal] is, not only does it produce this wonderful, continuous show of all of these bright and very striking flowers from springtime all the way through to the frost of the autumn, but also, this is a variety that is tough and hardy, and will grow anywhere within our region. Above all, [it] requires very little maintenance because it has exceptional disease resistance. It’s got lots of dark green, glossy foliage that doesn’t need to be sprayed, like I was trained many years ago to spray roses every 10 days. I don’t know about you, but I know that I certainly don’t ever want to have to do that again. Certainly not when there’s varieties like this that will exist and perform on their own without much care and attention.”

Climbing Roses come in various forms. Typically, most people think of them as rose vines blooming over a large space and sending out long canes, but Climbing Roses take years to reach that state. Think of planting a six-foot tree and expecting it to reach maturity within a year.
A relatively new type of Climbing Rose is called a Stacking Climber. In the first year, a Stacking Climber produces more flowers and less stems and leaves. The plant builds upon each cycle of bloom to gain height and width. As a Stacking Climber gets taller its canes get longer. Depending on the rose, the climate, and the care, a Stacking Climber may eventually take on the appearance of a long-stemmed Climbing Rose and cover a large space, but most Stacking Climbers are meant for smaller applications. In any case, the Stacking Climber should out-produce the traditional Climber in bloom when both are compared at the same size.

REFERENCE
•
Our company has over 125 years of experience trialing, testing, and selecting the best roses for introduction. The process begins with our relationships with breeders across the globe, who entrust us with their seedlings.
We are the only rose company to test on both coasts during the early stages of development. Test roses are assigned individual code numbers and start off growing on their own roots in “Rose Hell,” the no-spray trial and comparison fields at our West Grove, PA headquarters. The roses receive minimal care and are evaluated for consistency over several years. In more recent years, quarantine blocks from breeders outside of the U.S. are maintained both in Pennsylvania and California.
Selections from the initial tests are propagated in larger numbers to begin the buildup process and are planted into the research block at Neuhouse Farms in Wasco, CA to determine their quality as a bare root product. Roses that pass this test are sent to additional no-spray trials in Arroyo Grande, CA to determine resistance to common coastal diseases such as rust and mildews.
Out of the hundreds of new rose seedlings we receive each year, only around 10 to 15 will make it to the final two-year, no-spray trial at test gardens around the country to evaluate performance across all major regions. The top roses are carefully selected as new introductions to the market. The entire process from beginning to end takes on average 8 years.

OUR KEY PARTNERS IN ROSES
the house of meilland ®
The House of Meilland® represents the longest relationship in our history, illustrated by very famous roses along the way, including Peace, Bonica® and Eden Climber® to name a few. Meilland® is the most awarded foreign breeder in North America. They are also the breeder of Drift® Roses, the most popular rose series after Knock Out® in North America.
kordes ®
Kordes® is the latest addition in our long tradition of aligning ourselves with the best breeders in the world. Kordes® is one of the most successful rose families in the world, and we are very proud to be their North American partner. This relationship enables us to introduce world class roses and series, such as Veranda®, Kolorscape®, Arborose®, and others.
mr. will radler
Almost thirty years ago, on May 5th, 1992, we received a seedling we coded internally as CP 4642. The rose world hasn’t been the same since, as this code went on to become the original Knock Out® Rose bred by Will Radler. Sitting Pretty™ is another breakthrough, as it is one of the first Zone 4 hardy, fragrant Grandiflora Roses.
dr. david zlesak
Way before he became a Professor of Horticulture, Dr. David Zlesak began breeding roses. Inspired by Will Radler, who he considers to be his mentor, he has been breeding roses since he was a teenager. We are proud to have introduced the Pretty Polly® series, which is the first compact, Zone 4 hardy, ever-blooming series of Polyanthas.
ms. julie overom
For twenty-two years, Julie has been on a personal mission to develop the perfect rose for northern climates: a disease-resistant rose as pretty as a Hybrid Tea and hardy enough to survive northern winters. The result of her efforts is Cherry Frost™, the first cane hardy climber suitable for Zone 4.
dr. james sproul
Dr. James Sproul is a physician by training who has dedicated his extra time to breeding roses since his very early years. Jim has especially been interested in Rosa hulthemia , a wild rose species from the plateau of central Asia. After twenty long years of work, he has brought us great introductions like Brick House® Pink and, most recently, PowerPuff Pink®.

BREEDER PROFILE: KORDES ®
In 1887 in a small town north of Hamburg, Germany called Elmshorn, 22-year-old Wilhelm Kordes founded a nursery for the production of rose plants called W. Kordes’ Sohne. He collected roses from many sources for propagation and became known as a leading rose expert of his time. His business prospered, and in 1918 it was relocated to Sparrieshoop, Germany, where it remains to this day.
In time, Wilhelm II and his brother Herman joined their father in his business. Herman focused on marketing and production, while, in 1920, Wilhelm II began a program to breed new rose varieties. This brotherly partnership resulted in vastly expanded production, reaching over one million plants yearly in the late 1930’s. And it also resulted in worldwide breeding successes such as Crimson Glory, which came to market in 1935. Over the next 30 years the company continued to expand with new greenhouses, modern cold storage facilities, and increased production. Today, Kordes® markets roses in more than 30 countries around the world.
The W. Kordes’ Sohne breeding program is one of the largest in the world. Before introducing a new rose, Kordes® carefully evaluates it for such qualities as color, size, form, vase life, productivity, disease resistance, and fragrance.
Every year, using traditional hybridizing methods, the Kordes® staff creates approximately 1,200,000 new seeds from making crosses. The resulting seeds are harvested and planted for the initial evaluations and selection. Thousands of these are selected for further evaluation and field trials. These trials last more than seven years, with only a handful of roses selected for release each year.
In 1990 Kordes® determined that all garden roses should be naturally healthy and disease resistant, a decision that led to having all garden rose trial fields managed and evaluated without applications of fungicides.
These rigorous standards in breeding, trialing, and evaluation are why Kordes® Roses remain an essential part of any successful rose portfolio.

AVAILABLE PRODUCT FORMS
bare root
This is the most effective way to finish a blooming plant quickly. Our bare root roses arrive at your operation dormant and ready to be potted and grown for spring sales. We harvest and ship our bare root at the ideal time for you to ensure a successful crop.
Graded bare root roses in bundles of five are packed and palletized for shipping. Boxes are floor loaded for ease of delivery to your location. Larger orders can take advantage of palletized shipping.
We offer two bare root rose grades: 2-year budded and 1-year own root. #1 grade bare root will have a minimum of three canes measuring at least 5/16” in caliper. #1.5 grade bare root will have a minimum of three substantial canes.
The performance and growth will be very similar between a 2-year budded rose and a 1-year own root rose. The main difference is the size of the bare root plant. #1 grade bare root roses typically finish in about 8–10 weeks and #1.5 grade bare root roses typically finish in about 10–12 weeks.
liners
You can purchase our roses in a variety of liner sizes, including 21c, 32c, and 72c. Additional inputs are available by contacting your Territory Manager. (pg. 145)
fiber pot
Our fiber pot program has been fully redesigned to better support our growers and retailers. Newly designed wraps ensure that you can capitalize on brand recognition and get premium pricing at retail. Our fiber pot roses are always #1-grade bare root so you can start your successful rose sales early. (pg. 06)
trees
1-year and 2-year bare root trees are another product form we are proud to offer you. Our rose trees are budded to RW rootstock instead of Dr. Huey. This produces straighter trunks with less scarring than other rose trees on the market. We also graft our trees with four bud eyes instead of the industry standard of three.
