In daffodils, hope blooms

Not only does the daffodil herald the beginning of spring, it’s seen as an international symbol of hope for people affected by cancer.

This year is the 30th anniversary of the Cancer Council’s annual daffodil campaign which raises money for research, prevention programs and support services.

Since its inception in 1986, more than $137 million has been raised nationally through Daffodil Day. In that time, the five-year cancer survival rate has increased by about 20 per cent, a support line has been created (13 11 20), and there are many new support services and programs.

To coincide with Daffodil Day this year, Janice Le Sueur will fill her florist shop with more than 600 of the sunny blooms.

She hopes the scale of her order will match the significance of the Cancer Council’s celebration this year.

Daffodil Day will be celebrated in Australia on Friday, August 26.

Boom times in the north

By Laura Michell The number of homes in Whittlesea is set to soar over the next 15 years as the municipality gains an estimated 110,000 more residents.

The state government’s Victoria in Future report predicts that by 2031, there will be 108,000 households in Whittlesea, up from 69,000 this year.

It is expected that about half of the 39,000 new houses will be built in the city’s growth suburbs.

The report is also anticipating a surge in Whittlesea’s population – to 314,000 people – and predicts it will have one of the largest population increases in the state.

Wyndham is expected to be Victoria’s

fastest-growing municipality in the 15-year projection, followed by Casey and Melton.

The predictions coincide with Northern Health reporting that Melbourne’s northern suburbs are in the midst of a baby boom.

Northern Health’s Epping hospital welcomed 3589 babies in the year to June 30, up from 3420 in the previous 12 months.

June was the hospital’s busiest month, with 329 babies delivered.

The number of babies born at the hospital has skyrocketed in the past six years, increasing 52 per cent from 2352 births in 2010-11.

Northern Health chief executive Siva Sivarajah said the hospital was overseeing delivery of an average 68 babies a week.

Metropolitan Planning Authority (MPA)

chief executive Peter Seamer said greenfield developments were planned for Wollert, Donnybrook, Woodstock and Epping North to accommodate the expected growth.

He said the MPA and the state government were working hard to ensure infrastructure and transport options are delivered in tandem with growth in Whittlesea.

“The MPA is ensuring our greenfield areas are terrific places to live, with strong liveability outcomes,” Mr Seamer said.

“In addition to developer contribution funds, the government is investing close to $1 billion in the Whittlesea area. Indented bays ease the squeeze

By Laura Michell Hume council will spend $170,000 to create indented parking bays in three of the city’s narrowest streets where residents are regularly fined for parking on nature strips.

Councillors voted on July 19 to create the parking bays at Winchester Way in Broadmeadows, McLaurin Avenue in Roxburgh Park and Acland Street in Craigieburn as part of its parking-on-narrow-streets policy.

The council will spend a further $30,000 to create indented bays in other streets at the

request of property owners. The owners will be required to contribute $1000 towards each bay.

The council created the policy after years of complaints by residents who have copped fines for parking on nature strips in streets that are too narrow for two cars to park.

Under the policy, a street is considered to be too narrow if, when two vehicles are parked at the kerbside opposite each other, there is less than three metres of road width available for through traffic.

Roxburgh Park, Craigieburn and Sunbury, many of which had been the subjects of complaints from residents.

Nine streets were found to warrant indented parking bays, including Winchester Way, McLaurin Avenue and Acland Street, which were found to have the least amount of

on-street parking space. The council expects to fund parking bays in the remaining six streets in coming years.

Cr Geoff Porter said the bays were needed because parking on the municipality’s narrow streets had become a “headache” for the council. “I know people think they’re doing the right thing putting the wheels up on the nature strip to make a clearway,” he said.

Cr Porter said changes to state planning policies to allow narrower streets had left the council and the community with a “large burden”.

Brotherly love kicks in early A Craigieburn mum has praised her 10-year-old son for calling triple-0 after she gave birth at home.

Epenesa Tamate went into labour with her seventh son at 2.30am on July 22. The labour was so brief that Mrs Tamate gave birth in the hallway of her Edington Way home.

“When I feel the baby come out, I lie down and push,” she said. “He had the cord wrapped around his neck so I tried to take it off, then lay

on my left side and pushed him out. Then I lay with him.”

After delivering her son, Mrs Tamate screamed out for her husband, Tui, to call an ambulance.

But it was her quick-thinking son, Chris, who made the call after finding his mum in the hallway outside the toilet. Mrs Tamate said she was very proud of her son.

arrive at the house about 2.45am. Mrs Tamate said the officers wrapped her and the baby in blankets and checked her over while they waited for paramedics.

Mrs Tamate and the baby were taken to The Northern Hospital.

Mrs Tamate said both she and the baby, who is yet to be named, were doing well.

Whittlesea council is owed $7.1 million in unpaid rates for the 2015-16 financial year.

The arrears relate to almost 6000 properties and is a $1.5 million increase from 2014-15, when $5.6 million in rates was outstanding.

Council property and valuations manager Gino Mitrione said 5977 properties in the municipality had an unpaid rates debt greater than $50.

He said the greatest amount owed by a single ratepayer was $60,000, for an industrial property.

“Council has processes in place to help ratepayers struggling to pay their rates,” Mr Mitrione said.

“We encourage residents to contact us to discuss their options. ” Mr Mitrione said the council had placed more than 2000 ratepayers on payment arrangements, enabling them to pay rates in fortnightly or monthly instalments.

Meanwhile, Hume council was unable to say how much it is owed in outstanding rates. Corporate services director Daryl Whitfort said the council was in the process of completing its annual financial statements, including the reconciliation of unpaid rates.

He advised ratepayers experiencing financial hardship to contact the council, which could consider payment options and place a hold on interest accumulating or offer time extensions.

Rates in both municipalities will rise by an average of 2.5 per cent this financial year, in line with the state government’s rate rise cap.

Council to fight hotel pokie plan

A plan to install gaming machines at South Morang’s Commercial Hotel faces opposition from Whittlesea council.

As reported by Star Weekly Weekly, Australian Leisure and Hospitality Group (ALHG) applied to the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation (VCGLR) for permission to install 40 gaming machines at the hotel.

The Commercial Hotel currently does not have poker machines. The group plans to move 20 gaming machines from three of its other local hotels – The Plough, Bundoora Tavern and Excelsior – to the hotel, and will also purchase 20 new machines for the Plenty Road venue.

This, it says, means only an extra 20 machines overall in Whittlesea.

Last week, councillors agreed to submit a social and economic impact assessment to the VCGLR indicating the council opposes the application.

The council will have legal representation and expert witnesses at a future commission hearing for the application.

Cr Ricky Kirkham said creating another place of gambling in the municipality would be detrimental to the community.

He said while the application was within the imposed cap on gaming machine numbers in Whittlesea, the council needs to make it clear it did not want any more gaming machines in the area.

In its application, ALHG said the pokie machines would underwrite construction of a gaming room, upgrades to the public bar, and a new rooftop bar and function room.

It said the extra machines were not likely to have a big impact on problem gambling because the venue would have one of the smallest number of gaming machines in Whittlesea.

Visitors to Woodlands Historic Park will have a rare chance to tour one of Hume’s oldest buildings at the weekend.

The park’s homestead will be part of Open House Melbourne for the first time, giving visitors a rare opportunity to explore the historic site.

The homestead is now home to Living Legends, which provides a place of retirement for champion racehorses.

Hume mayor Helen Patsikatheodorou hopes residents will take the chance to get to know a “local treasure” a little better.

“Woodlands Historic Homestead in Greenvale is one of the oldest built structures in Hume, with construction starting way back in 1843,” she said.

“It’s significant as a rare example of an early prefabricated building … designed and made in Britain before being transported to Australia.”

Sunbury’s Rupertswood Mansion will also be part of the open house program, which aims to connect people with houses and buildings that reflect Melbourne’s history. The program has been running since 2008.

Woodlands Historic Homestead is open on Saturday and Sunday from 10am.

Drug, crime connection spirals

By Laura Michell A dramatic rise in drug use and possession offences in Hume has been fuelled by the availability of methamphetamine, new data reveals.

Since 2006, the number of drug offences recorded in Hume has soared from 183 to 839, as of March 31 this year.

The Crime Statistics Agency released a report earlier this month analysing the types of drugs that have driven the increase in drug offences across the state over the past decade.

It found that cannabis, methamphetamine, ecstasy and prescription drugs offences were on the rise across Victoria.

In Hume, there were no recorded methamphetamine offences in 2006.

But in the 12 months to March 31 this year, police recorded 277 methamphetamine offences in the municipality.

Whittlesea saw a similar increase in methamphetamine offences, rising from none in 2006 to 174 in 2016. Overall, drug offences in Whittlesea rose from 255 in 2006 to 568 this year.

Hume Inspector Anthony Brown said the rise in the popularity of the drug ice was behind the surge in methamphetamine offences.

“Ice use in the community is of a concern to police on many levels, including the often increased aggression observed in users and the impact on family violence,” he said.

Cannabis remained the drug people were most commonly caught with in both Hume and Whittlesea over the past decade, while heroin and amphetamine offences remained relatively stable.

Inspector Brown said the surge in the number of recorded drug offences could be attributed to increases in the number of people being caught with drugs.

He said this was a result of increased training and more targeted policing.

“The use of illegal drugs and driving is always a concern for police,” he said.

Can-do at Kangan A Glenroy student has overcome three years of missed schooling to be named a finalist in the Victorian Training Awards.

Amanda Gharib, who has graduated from Broadmeadows’ Kangan Institute with a Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning and Victorian Certificate of Education certificate II in business, is in the running to be named vocational student of the year at the statewide training awards.

She is currently studying for a bachelor of business (management and marketing).

Ms Gharib said she was surprised by the nomination, given the hurdles she had overcome.

“When I was 14, my family and I were in Kurdistan on holiday when my father got into a car accident,” she said.

“His condition was bad and we weren’t able to travel and return home. We stayed in Kurdistan for three years.

“During that time I wasn’t able to go to school and I slowly started to lose English skills like grammar.”

When Ms Gharib returned to Australia at the age of 17, she tried to go back to high school to complete year 10, but she wasn’t allowed to because of her age.

It was then that a family friend suggested she continue her education at Kangan Institute.

“Being recognised at such a high level has definitely motivated me to do well academically,” she said. “It’s definitely taken me by surprise.”

Kangan Institute automotive teacher Luke Perry has also been shortlisted for the awards and is in the running to be named Victorian VET Teacher/ Trainer of the Year.

The award winners will be announced on August 26.

History pieced together Students at Ilim College are hoping a mosaic they created with the help of the Aboriginal community and the Australian Federal Police (AFP) will promote harmony and respect.

The Connection to Country mosaic was unveiled by Victorian Governor Linda Dessau at a ceremony at the school’s Dallas girl’s secondary campus on July 14 to mark Naidoc Week.

Campus principal Zeynep Sertel said the project followed a visit to the Islamic Museum by students earlier in the year, where they learnt about the interactions between Indigenous communities and Afghani cameleers who arrived in Australia in the 1860s.

The mosaic, on display at the entrance to the assembly hall, depicts Islamic and Aboriginal

art, Uluru, and the Australian and Islamic flags.

It also features cameleers and a man playing the didgeridoo.

Executive principal Aynur Simsirel said the mosaic celebrated the contribution of the cameleers to Australia’s culture.

“It enables the community and college to learn something about each other,” she said.

“Each piece [of the mosaic] paved the way for meaningful connections. The mosaic will serve as a beautiful reminder of the country we call home.”

AFP spokeswoman Dr Jenny Cartwright said the project had helped police to better connect with the students.

Hookah ban urged for restaurants

By Laura Michell Hume council will lobby for changes to tobacco laws to put an end to waterpipe smoking in the municipality’s restaurants and cafes.

The council will write to Health Minister Jill Hennessy to ask the state government to change the relevant Act so that waterpipe smoking is covered by the same laws as tobacco smoking.

Currently, the law bans products in which tobacco is the main ingredient from being smoked indoors at cafes and restaurants, as well as preventing them from being smoked by minors.

But waterpipes, also known as hookahs, are exempt from the act as they contain a mixture of tobacco, molasses and flavourings, meaning tobacco may not be the main ingredient.

Other councils, including Greater Dandenong, and health organisations including Quit Victoria, the Heart Foundation, Cancer Council and Australian Lebanese Medical Association, are also backing the ban.

Hume councillor Alan Bolton said he was amazed that there were 17 restaurants in Hume where waterpipes could be smoked.

cardiovascular disease. We need to close the loophole in the Tobacco Act,” Cr Bolton said.

“This is the first step in reducing waterpipe smoking-related harm to residents.”

Quit Victoria director Dr Sarah White said Victoria was the only state in Australia that still allowed waterpipe smoking in workplaces.

She said the practice was putting the health of staff and customers at risk.

“Using a waterpipe to smoke tobacco has serious health effects for smokers, and for other exposed to secondhand smoke,” Dr White said.

“In fact, a one-hour waterpipe smoking session can produce secondhand smoke with as much carbon monoxide as that produced by 20 cigarettes.

“It is unacceptable that staff and customers in Victorian workplaces must continue to be exposed to the extensive health impacts of secondhand smoke due to a legislative oversight.”

New voice joins debate Afghan migrant Altaf Hussain wants to help break down the cultural barriers that divide people in the community.

The Craigieburn resident recently joined a public speaking program hosted by the Centre for Multicultural Youth so that he can share his experiences, culture and settlement journey with the wider community.

The program, dubbed Shout Out, aims to help young people have their voices heard by providing a forum for conversations between a speaker and an audience.

Altaf said the program had helped him learn about the way of life in Australia.

“Shout Out allowed me to connect with many other culturally diverse young people in Melbourne,” he said.

“Before joining the program, I was quiet. But Shout Out gave me a chance to make friends and gain confidence.

“Now I can’t stop talking and am so much more social.”

Altaf said he had gained leadership and public speaking skills and an ability to work as a team player, thanks to the program.

“I gained the confidence to share my voice with people who might not otherwise hear it,” he said.

“I would recommend Shout Out to any business or organisation that wants to better understand the refugee or migrant settlement journey.”

By Laura Michell A Lalor man, who owned and managed a Campbellfield pet shop, has been banned from being in charge of any animals for 10 years.

Haidar Al-Khirsany faced Broadmeadows Magistrates Court on July 7 where he pleaded guilty to a number of offences relating to 12 birds that were seized from his King Pets store.

The RSPCA seized the birds in May, 2014.

It said a number of them were housed in poor conditions, with some requiring veterinary treatment.

Others were in poor body condition, and these were later surrendered to the RSPCA. Al-Khirsany was charged with a number of offences by RSPCA Victoria.

They related to confining an animal, failing to provide veterinary treatment and failing to provide appropriate food.

He was fined $1000 without conviction and banned from being in charge of an animal for 10 years.

RSPCA Victoria prosecutor Daniel Bode said the 10-year ban reflected the severity of neglect that had been uncovered.

He said some of the birds had chronic deformity of their beaks, while others were suffering from feather loss.

One bird had a sunken eye, which had no vision, while another had lice and Psittacosis, which is a highly contagious zoonotic disease.

“The general living conditions of the pet

store were extremely poor,” Mr Bode said.

“Several aviaries contained a deep layer of faeces on the floor underneath a superficial layer of shredded paper.

“It was obvious the cages had not been cleaned in weeks or months,” he said.

“A veterinarian examination found the condition of the birds was consistent with crowding, stress and bullying.

“It is only fitting that the person who failed to give these birds the care they require has been banned from being in charge of any animal.”

Coup for youth theatre Screenwriter Paul Kooperman has swapped the glitz and glamour of the silver screen to come to Epping, signing on as artistic director for a local youth theatre company.

Kooperman will lead the council’s First Impressions youth theatre company, which runs weekly workshops for people aged 11 to 30.

The sessions, which have been running for 10 years, cover topics including performance, physical theatre, multimedia, acting and scriptwriting.

Whittlesea mayor Stevan Kozmevski said the appointment of Kooperman as artistic director was a coup for the company and the council.

“Paul comes to us with a range of experiences and a rich background in the arts, including a stint screenwriting for Hollywood and Australian TV shows, and lecturing at Swinburne University,” he said.

“He will bring creative skills and ideas to the theatre company, and we look forward to seeing what he has in store.”

The workshops are open to young people who live, work or attend school in Whittlesea.

They will run on Mondays during school term, from 6pm until 8.30pm.

Stockland has unveiled plans for an outerspace-themed park at Highlands’ Mount Ridley precinct, where budding astronauts will be able to let their imagination run wild.

Northfield Park has been designed by MDG Landscape Architects and will feature special play equipment, a shelter, basketball half-court and a kick-about area.

A second new playground, Highlander Park, will be built in the lakeside area of Highlands.

It will include play equipment for younger and older children, a basketball half-court and picnic areas.

Where do you live and how long have you lived there?

I currently live in South Morang and have always lived in the city of Whittlesea. I grew up in Thomastown, bought my first home in Epping, and have lived in South Morang for the last 11 years.

What brought you to the area?

I have always liked the Plenty corridor and being close to farmland and bush, up to and past the township of Whittlesea.

What do you love about your community?

I love to ride my bike anywhere and everywhere, and I really enjoy saying good morning to people as I pass them on bike paths.

The response 98 per cent of the time is a smile and a good morning right back at me.

That’s what makes my day.

How did you first become involved with SES? I first became involved with the SES when I went along to an information night at our local

SPORT Bloods battle on as injuries wreck season hopes Lalor remains positive despite a season which hasn’t lived up to expectations in division 2 of the Northern Football League.

After going within four points of a flag last season, the Bloods were this year expected to be among the challengers.

They appeared to be on track when they won two of their first three matches, but then things started to go wrong.

“It’s been a bad year for us and we’ve been riddled with injuries,” Bloods president Rodney Lowry said.

“We haven’t been able to get a full side on the park and have had injury after injury. At times, from about round four or five, we’ve had 13 of last year’s side out injured.

“Nothing has gone right since our coach Steve Marshall broke his leg in round 1 [in the reserves].”

Despite being winless since round three, Lowry said it was not all doom and gloom.

With Reservoir not fielding a side this year, no side will be relegated come season’s end, “Sometimes you just have a year like this, it’s footy,” Lowry said.

“We’ve had a real hard crack and you can get disheartened, but we know we’re a good side and are taking a positive attitude.”

Lowry said the club would soon start looking towards next year when it hoped to have an under-19 side in the competition.

On Saturday, the Bloods pushed top-two

aspirant North Heidelberg for three quarters before falling short.

Despite missing eight of their best 22, the Bloods led at half-time and were within three goals at the last break. But they couldn’t get any closer and went down 16.7 (103)-11.11 (77).

Jarrod King kicked three goals for the Bloods and was one of the best.

Lowry said that sort of performance was what he wanted to see in the run home.

“We proved we can play some good football, despite missing eight players,” he said.

“Considering the side we had in, we couldn’t have been prouder.

“If we keep that attitude we could upset some sides in the run home.”

Meanwhile, Thomastown lost 17.19 (121)-5.12 (42) against Hurstbridge.

It was a tough day in division 1, with no team scoring more than 63 points.

Both Whittlesea and Bundoora struggled to hit the scoreboard in losses to Northcote Park and Greensborough respectively.

In division 3, South Morang kept the pressure on the top four with a massive 47 scoring shots in a 167-point win against Kilmore.

With top-four sides Epping, Watsonia and St Mary’s all winning, the Lions are still a game outside the top four ahead of a clash with fourth-placed St Mary’s.

By Tara Murray Greenvale produced its most consistent four-quarter performance of the Essendon District Football League season on Saturday to record its first win over a top-five side in more than two months.

It was an encouraging performance by the perennial premier division finalists, as they have struggled with consistency at times this season.

They faced ladder leader Keilor on Saturday in a match-up which is normally a close affair.

And it was no different this time, as conditions pointed to a tightly contested tussle.

The Jets had their noses in front at every break and despite not kicking a goal in the last quarter won 10.9 (69)-7.9 (51).

Jets coach Shannon Grant said it was a crucial game in the context of the season and making sure that they play finals.

The win keeps Greenvale in third position, a game clear of fourth and fifth.

“It was probably the best we’ve played across the board for four quarters,” Grant said.

“The ground was a bit heavy as all grounds are at the moment and was a slower track.

“Keilor gave it a crack and so did we and it was a bit of an arm wrestle.

“To control the game like we did will give us confidence and I hope we can play tough contested football for the rest of the year.”

Matthew Smith and Trent Shinner kicked two goals each for the Jets, while the experienced trio of Nick Lower, Fabian Deluca and Fort Caruso were best.

Grant said the side had been helped by the return of three or four players in recent weeks which had helped some of the younger players.

“We’ll continue to play some of the younger guys and it’s great to see them step up,” Grant said.

“Daniel Trifunovic has played well, Ryan Townsend is an under-18, Jayden Ranno was good before he got injured and Cody Lynch is another who got a chance.

“We’re building a good group of young players.”

In division 1, Craigieburn suffered a second loss in three weeks when they were upset by Glenroy.

Westmeadows and Tullamarine cemented their spots in the top four with wins against Hillside and Hadfield respectively.

The Demons have all but sealed a finals spot, sitting three games clear of fifth with three games remaining.

The Tigers are third.

In division 2, Roxburgh Park won the top-of-the-table clash with East Keilor, coming from behind to get home by 11 points.

Jacana was on the right end of a close one, defeating Moonee Valley by four points.

It’s been a whirlwind eight weeks but everything is on track for Roxburgh Park Falcons Cricket Club.

After its decision to pull out of the Victorian Sub-District competition because of a lack of players at the top end, the club has set about reinventing itself.

A new committee was elected last week and Tyson Sinclair has taken over as president.

Sinclair said that while he had only officially been in the role a couple of days, the new committee had been working hard for two months.

“There’s been a bit of rushing about, but we’ve got the board and committee going,” he said. ”There are 14 committee members [plus four office bearers], which I think is the highest the club has had.

“We’ve already signed a coach and already got sponsors on board.”

Sinclair said the Falcons were looking to field at least two senior sides in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association in the upcoming season, with the top side to play in the north B1 division.

He said they had retained about 20 per cent of last season’s players, mostly from their Third and Fourth XI’s.

The Falcons had four senior teams in the VSDCA last season, when they called themselves by their official name, Roxburgh Park Broadmeadows.

They won a total of four games, with the thirds and fourths failing to win.

“At the moment we have enough players to field two teams and we’re looking at reaching out to find a few more players,” Sinclair said.

“If we have the numbers, we’ll consider more teams.”

Andrew Spencer has returned to the club and will be senior coach for the next two seasons.

A handy cricketer in England before moving to Australia, Spencer has coached and played at several clubs in Victoria, including coaching Roxburgh Park in the North West Metropolitan Cricket Association in 2011-12.

Sinclair said one major focus of the new committee would be the junior program.

While the club already had a successful program, Sinclair said the Falcons had struggled to keep players once they reached senior level.

He said the new committee believed that using the name Roxburgh Park Falcons resonated with the community.

Broncos farewell Copeland with easy pass to Bowers The transition between coaches for ORENA Hume City Broncos Big V men’s state championship side has been a smooth one.

With head coach Lanard Copeland departing earlier than expected due to his role with National Basketball League side Sydney Kings, Kelvin Bowers has stepped up to coach the Broncos for the final four rounds, and possibly for the finals.

Bowers, who had been an assistant to Copeland, can more than hold his own as a coach, with a career that includes stints at Bulleen, Warrandyte and Sunbury.

Bowers said while he had known there was a possibility he would need to step up into

the coach’s shoes, it came a little sooner than anticipated.

“We had talked about it a few weeks in advance,” he said. “Lanard is very dedicated to his work and wanted to give 100 per cent to both roles, but it was a bit more work with the Sydney Kings and he decided to let go of the reins here.

“It has been a very smooth transition. The wonderful thing for me was Lanard would let me have a voice. He was the man, but gave some leeway from me to share my ideas.”

On court, the Broncos remain in the mix for a second straight finals series. With two games remaining, they are seventh after losing to

Ringwood at the weekend. The slow start here proved costly, as the Broncos lost 109-95.

In the showdown to finals, three of their starters will be missing from the action.

Gak Laat was injured early in the season, while captain Jermaine Maybank tore his patella tendon and hasn’t played for the past two months.

The final blow came when veteran Jamal Brown tore his Achilles tendon.

“To lose three of our starters to serious injuries is a massive loss for us,” Bowers said.

“We’re not using missing players as an excuse for poor results. We have a powerful squad, and they believe they can be successful.”

‘Too old’ Egan hits 300

By Tara Murray After playing in his second championship in four years with Ringwood, Luke Egan was quite content to finish his basketball career on a high.

At 40 years of age and with more than 250 Big V games under his belt across several different clubs, he thought his basketball days were over.

But then he received a message from a Big V coach asking him to play on.

And it wasn’t just any old coach.

“Lanard Copeland messaged me on Facebook and pumped up my tyres, telling me I still had a lot to offer,” Egan recalled last week.

“The fact it was Lanard, an NBL (National Basketball League) legend, and someone I hold in high regard telling me to play on. I had to consider it.”

Egan did more than consider it and his retirement from the Big V competition lasted less than a preseason when he joined Hume City Broncos/Broadmeadows Basketball for a third time.

On Saturday night, Egan stepped onto the court for his 300th Big V match.

Fittingly, it came against Ringwood, the side with which he had tasted so much success.

“I retired in 2014 as I felt my form and productivity were waning,” he said.

“Lanard got hold of me and dragged me out of retirement and I have him to thank for getting to 300 games.

“I also wouldn’t have got here without [then Ringwood coach] Ken Harrington. I wasn’t getting love at Eltham and Ken gave me another opportunity at the age of 36.

“I played in two championships with them [but] never predicted I’d play my 300th game against them.”

Egan started playing basketball at 11 and played with Coburg until under-20s. He then joined what was then known as the Broadmeadows senior men team in 1993.

He played one season there before heading to America for four years of college.

A stint in the SEABL was followed by a brief flirtation with the NBL. “I signed with Brisbane Bullets for 1999-00 season,” Egan said. “I never really got a crack at it. I was angry about it for a while, as I thought I should have been playing in the NBL. “I got over it … I feel like I have something to prove though.”

While he didn’t get the basketball career he wanted, Egan says it was also a bit of a blessing as it allowed him to get some education qualifications along the way.

On court, he continued to plug away in the SEABL and Big V competitions, including playing for the Broncos in 2005.

Ironically, he played only one season there before being told by the coach he was too old.

While most players Egan’s age would be happy to slowly fade into the background, injuries to teammates have seen him thrust back into a starting role in recent weeks.

That has seen his points, assists and rebounds per game increase, including recording his first career triple double in that period.

But Egan is the first to praise his teammates for their efforts in the absence of the three injured starters.

While the injuries could derail the Broncos’ finals chances, it also made Egan consider his future.

“Driving home from Corio three or four weeks ago after all these major injuries, I thought I was done.” he said.

“I didn’t want to go through an injury like they have gone through. But I’m passionate and love the game and wear my heart on my sleeve. Now I want to go around again.

“My wife, Carleigh, is happy for me to keep playing … it gets me out of the house.

“My son, Jack, is now five, so hopefully he’ll take some memories away of me playing.”

Bowers said Nick Jones, Javari Williams and Luke Egan had stepped up in the absence of other key players.

The Broncos’ finals fate may come down to their final match of the year, facing Eltham on Sunday.

Then there’s Diamond Valley to beat on Saturday night.

“We believe that if we can finish sixth, we can win it the way we’ve played the last two weeks.”

Meanwhile the women’s side assured themselves of top spot after defeating Ringwood, 75-59.

Eagles discover some late form It’s been a long season for Craigieburn Eagles in Big V women’s division 1 but there’s light at the end of the tunnel.

After winning in round one, the Eagles had to wait until round 15 for their next win. And, not content with that, they won again the following week.

While the winning streak ended at two, Eagles coach Rod Sweeney said the recent results showed the Eagles were on the right track.

On Saturday night, finals-bound Latrobe City proved too strong, winning 97-64. Natalie Thomas top-scored with 15 points.

“What we’ve been working on has finally clicked and we are able to put it together for four quarters,” Sweeney said.

“There has always been a good attitude even when we’ve been beaten and the girls are always at training.

“They haven’t dropped their heads and they know where we’re going.

“It’s been good to get some wins and I was really proud of what we did in those two weeks.”

Sweeney said one of the biggest changes had been the players’ mindset.

“We’ve tried to teach some of the girls a different way of playing,” he said.

“It’s okay to make mistakes. If the opportunity it there, you can take it.

“With shooting it’s been about looking at the right option and not look for someone else to be the shooter.

“The girls are now demanding the ball and wanting to put it up.”

Sweeney said if the team had started playing like this earlier in the season, they could have won another six games.

“The girls have been playing with a different mindset,” he said. “Now we’re in this position we believe we can beat teams and there’s belief in the team.”

Despite the late-season form, the Eagles look likely to finish last.

With a lower percentage and after losing the head-to-head with Werribee, the only way the Eagles can avoid finishing bottom is if they beat the undefeated Sunbury Jets and the Devils lose to Mildura.

Meanwhile, the Eagles men’s division 2 finals hopes are over after Collingwood upset Coburg.

After beating Maccabi, the Eagles needed Coburg to win to set up a last round mini-elimination final against Collingwood. But it didn’t happen and the Eagles are two games outside the top five with one round left.

Jaak Ponsford was the star for the Eagles in their win, scoring 27 points.

Hume turns the tables

By Tara Murray Two teams, two games and two different results – that was the story for Hume City and Green Gully last week.

The two National Premier League sides faced off last Tuesday night in their rescheduled Dockerty Cup semi-final before playing in the NPL on Saturday night.

The Cavaliers took the honours the first time around, winning the semi-final 2-0.

Having learnt from the first game, City reversed the result on Saturday night, winning 2-0.

If having two games wasn’t hectic enough, Hume parted ways with coach Louie Acevski and assistant coach Zoran Markovski between the two matches.

Acevski announced that he wouldn’t be coaching next season and the club then decided it wanted its new future to start immediately.

City captain Nick Hegarty said it had been a hard and emotional week.

“It was tough with the [semi-final] result and then the coaches leaving,” he said.

“Obviously, we wanted to improve on last year in the Dockerty Cup, but it went against us on the night.

“We then had our backs to the wall on Saturday night … the start of a new era.”

Hegarty said the departure of Acevski had hit the players hard but that they couldn’t dwell on it.

The skipper said they learnt from Tuesday night’s mistakes.

“We identified the ways we could get at Green Gully, the ways that we could beat them,” Hegarty said.

“We are both pretty competitive sides. To the players’ credit we did that.”

Hegarty said that in both games, the victors scored good goals early to gain momentum.

On Saturday night, it was the same magic from Tom Cahill that opened the scoring for Hume. The win was sealed by Danny Dixon late in the match.

City is sixth on the ladder and now only one point behind fifth-placed Cavaliers.

Things don’t get any quieter for City, which has two games this week.

On Wednesday night, it kicks off action in the national stage of the FFA Cup when it plays Marconi Stallions at ABD Stadium.

City then faces Heidelberg United in NPL action on Sunday.

City was the fairytale story of last year’s cup, making the semi-finals.

“It’s something that everyone who was there last year remembers,” Hegarty said.

“ABD Stadium was bouncing and every game was enjoyable.

“Hopefully there will be a lot of people down there again and it’s on Fox Sports.”

City hastens departure of coaching staff Hume City and coach Louie Acevski have parted ways just days before the club’s FFA Cup match against Marconi Stallions City released a statement on Thursday morning saying that the club had parted ways with Acevski and assistant coach Zoran Markovski by “mutual consent”.

The shock announcement came on the back of Acevski telling the National Premier League club that he wasn’t planning to coach on next season.

Acevski said he had made the decision to spend more time with his family next year, having been selfish with his soccer, first as a player and then a coach.

“I had a meeting with the president [Steve Kaya] for a chat about the current situation and started talking about next year,” Acevski told Star Weekly.

“I was honest, and said that I would be taking a rest next year to have time to spend with the kids and my wife.

“Steve thought for a little bit and said we should part immediately.

“I would have liked to finish what I’ve started, but I respect his decision.”

Acevski said there were no bitter feelings.

The club made the semi-finals of the Dockerty Cup and is set to make the NPL finals.

“I’ve left the club in a great position as one of the strongest NPL clubs in the country,” Acevski said.

“I’ve made some great friends and met some great footballers. I’ve had a great time in the last eight years as both player and coach.”

Technical director Dean Hennessey will be caretaker coach for the rest of the season. Hennessey has extensive coaching experience.

“I brought Dean to the club,” Acevski said. “I’ve known him for many years and he has a lot of experience and is a great person. He’ll definitely play a part in the club having success.”

Acevski said last year’s FFA Cup success, when City made it to the final four, was his highlight as coach.

“It was unbelievable,” Acevski said.

“It wasn’t just playing Melbourne Victory – it was the whole lot of it. The game against the Brisbane Strikers was one of the most enjoyable moments in my whole career.”

Sporting looks for points as promotion hopes vanish

Sporting Whittlesea’s tough run continues after it suffered its fifth straight loss in FFV state league 2 north-west.

With top two and promotion hopes now over, Sporting has turned its attention to climbing back up the ladder, to stay clear of the relegation zone.

Saturday’s 3-2 loss to Moreland City did not help. Michael Packovski and Nicholas Vissaris scored for Sporting, which remains in ninth position, only four points clear of bottom side Heidelberg Stars.

Hume United is up to sixth on the ladder after beating Fitzroy City.

Jagajeet Shrestha, Tarcan Kefeli and skipper Leon Osei scored for United in that 3-2 win.

Whittlesea United remains in the hunt for promotion in state league 3 north-west after its 2-1 victory against Melbourne University.

United remains in third position, but is now only three points behind ladder leaders Geelong Rangers after a 0-0 result against Upfield.

United has played one less game than the Rangers. Upfield’s win cements its fifth position.

In other results, La Trobe University defeated Darebin United 4-1, while Lalor United lost 3-0 to Western Eagles.

In state league 4 north, Bundoora United won just their second game for the season.

It was a good day for United, defeating Watsonia Heights 3-1, but they’re still stuck at the bottom of the ladder.

Ladder leaders Epping City remains undefeated after beating Brunswick Zebras 3-0, while North City Wolves defeated Plenty Valley Lions 2-1.

Mill Park’s match against West Preston was washed out.

In state league 5 north, Greenvale United‘s quest to finish on top of the ladder is well and truly alive.

With top side RMIT having the bye, United had the chance to draw equal on points and

they did just that with a 4-1 win against Keon Park.

Despite the win, United remains second on the ladder, with RMIT having a 19-goal better differential.

Craigieburn City remains in fourth spot after losing to third-placed Melbourne University, 4-3, while Meadow Park defeated Heidelberg Eagles 4-1.

Meanwhile in NPL 2 west, Whittlesea Ranges’ hold at the top of the ladder remains safe despite its 2-1 loss for Moreland City on Saturday.

On a wet afternoon, the Ranges wasted opportunities in the first half, and neither team could score.

But the sun came out in the second half and Moreland City came out firing, scoring two goals.

The Ranges scored a consolation goal in the last minute.

funny thing happens in the GLC when you’re on cruise control. If the car thinks you’re taking a corner too fast, it slows you down and resumes cruise only when you’re pointed straight ahead again. I found it damn annoying; who’s driving it? But I have to admit the GLC is very safe. Autonomous braking with pedestrian identification, adaptive cruise, lane departure and blind spot warnings.

This is a city SUV. It’s on 20-inch low-profile run-flat tyres so the ride can get quite harsh, especially out of town. And there’s no spare. While it handles nicely, it doesn’t come close to Range Rover’s Evoque.

But it’s quiet and relaxed and there’s a tonne of torque on hand and no significant evidence of turbo lag, which along with silky nine-speed auto, makes this a very smooth operator. And the audio is a cut above.

It’s also sharply priced, from $71k. Given the equipment levels, this most-expensive GLC is very good value against its major competitors.

I

love the surround-view camera. Cameras front, back and at the sides tell you exactly how far every part of the car is from encountering obstacles. It makes parking and reversing brilliantly easy.

As for the rest of the electronics, not so much. There are buttons everywhere; dash, doors, console, below and behind the steering wheel and on the steering wheel; there’s a control wheel on the console and there are menu systems both in the instrument cluster and the centre screen, which looks like an iPad glued to the dash.

Pay attention: it’s not all straightforward.

Budget a good slice of time to learn how to operate the most perplexing cruise control.

The electronic park brake takes some finding.

Get used to things, however, and the GLC is a nice way to travel, with plenty of usable power. The cabin is beautifully finished, the seating comfy and supportive. Back seat room is adequate and the cargo area is generous for the vehicle’s size.
