Sunbury picks a winner By Esther Lauaki It has been a tight squeeze at Sunbury SES headquarters for its 65 crew members over the past few years. The ever-expanding unit will receive $200,000 towards building a new training facility after its successful bid for state funding under the Pick My Project initiative. Sunbury SES was one of hundreds of community groups across Victoria that pitched projects as part of $30 million online community grants program where public

votes determined the funding allocations. Sunbury controller Anthony White said members were “very excited” about the news. “It’s a huge benefit to the community,” Mr White said. “At the moment we meet outside or upstairs of the unit … We don’t have any whiteboards or screens to work on. “The new facility is not only important for us but also for the other community groups that meet here including St Johns, Sunbury Festival committee and the local radio station. “This affects a whole raft of people.”

The money will be used to buy a relocatable 160 square metre multi-purpose building to be used as a classroom for theory and information technology-based learning, a small conference and meeting room. Computers, whiteboards and screens will also be purchased. “Sunbury SES is the primary and secondary road crash rescue provider for the Sunbury, Bulla and Diggers Rest region, as well as managing storm, flood and other natural disaster response,” Mr White said. “This facility will enable the unit to deliver

effective training to members, meeting its operational capability requirements.” The big winners of the Pick My Project initiative in the Macedon Ranges were Romsey Ecotherapy Park Climbing Forest and the Woodend Kindergarten Playground upgrade. The climbing forest will receive $200,000 to install a three-metre high climbing wall with ropes, lookouts, rope bridge, climbing net and a hammock. Woodend Kindergarten playground is in for a $200,000 upgrade. For more information, visit www. pickmyproject.vic.gov.au

Billion dollar building boom By Esther Lauaki Hume has again broken the $1 billion barrier for building permits issued in a financial year. The region was the fourth highest among the state’s top 10 metropolitan municipalities ranked by the value of building permits reported to the Victorian Building Authority. The data showed 4936 permits were issued for building works with a combined value of $1.39 billion in 2017-18. The value of permits was up 25 per cent on

the previous financial year’s $1.04 billion. Hume council planning and development director Michael Sharp said the number of permits issued bodes well for the area. Mr Sharp said the municipality was one of the fastest-growing and diverse municipalities in the country boosting the value of building permits. “Council continues to work with and advocate to the state government to ensure all of our suburbs, are liveable and attractive, and that our residents have proper access to services,” he said.

In the Macedon Ranges, building permits issued in the same period valued more than $230 million. The Ranges ranked eighth in the top 10 rural municipalities in the state by the value of building permits. Figures showed 1212 permits were issued for building works valued at $232.3 million in the year to June 30. The value of permits was up 25 per cent from $174 million for the previous financial year. Statewide, percentage increases for the value

Hume and Macedon Ranges police were working long after the final football siren sounded as part of Operation Scoreboard over the recent long weekend. Hume police detected 79 traffic offences throughout the four-day road safety focus, while Macedon Ranges officers detected 53 traffic offences. Unregistered vehicles drove offences up in Hume with 21 detected by police while 38 drivers were pulled up by Macedon Ranges police for speeding. In Hume, 10 drivers were found to be drink driving, another five were disqualified drivers, eight were unlicensed and 15 were caught speeding. Three drivers were drink driving in the Macedon Ranges, two were drug affected, one unlicensed and four were driving unregistered vehicles. Road Policing Command Acting Assistant Commissioner Neville Taylor said overall it was disappointing to see so many motorists taking risks behind the wheel. “There’s just no excuse,” he said. “This type of behaviour, and let’s be very clear – these are choices made behind the wheel – simply puts all road users at increased risk.” He said it was still good to see many drivers driving safely. “The majority of our road users did the right thing and I’m thankful that so many were able to enjoy the sporting weekend.” Operation Scoreboard ran statewide from 12.01am Thursday, September 27 to 11.59pm Sunday, September 30.

Gill Rose and Marie Lee show off one of the quilts ready for donation. (Joe Mastroianni)

Donation all stitched up A Gisborne craft group has gone above and beyond to give sick children warm fuzzies. The Gisborne Presbyterian craft group set a target to make 100 quilts and donate them to the Very Snuggly Quilt program – which aims to gift up to about 180 quilts each month to sick children at the Royal Children’s Hospital. Group co-ordinator Glenys Ariss said she was proud to hand over the local quilters’ efforts to the program’s organiser Marie Lee. “On discharge the children keep the quilts and take them home,” Ms Ariss said. “These quilts become treasured items by the children and families and in many instances

this is the first thing that is packed when a child needs to be readmitted to hospital. “Our group exceeded our target of 100 quilts and were thrilled to be able to hand over 140 quilts for the program.” Ms Ariss thanked local volunteers involved in the Pick up Stitches, Victorian Textiles and Logan Patchwork Fabrics groups who helped to achieve the goal. The community is there for Clare By Esther Lauaki Clare Waites has been told by doctors that only three people in the world have the same aggressive type of cancer that she does. There is no cure for the Gisborne mum of four who continues to fight stage four neuroendocrine small cell cancer at the Peter MacCallum Cancer centre. The Macedon Ranges community has rallied around the Waites family by launching the There for Clare website to help with health and childcare expenses.

A sold out fundraising event on October 13 is just one of many initiatives being organised. Clare’s husband Glenn told Star Weekly that they’re taking each day as it comes. “There have been some complications,” Glenn said. “The cancer is so aggressive that it’s causing a whole lot of small fires that we’re having to put out along the way. “She’s still strong and she’s fighting.” Clare’s health quickly declined in early January and in August the family received the devastating terminal diagnosis. So far, her treatment regime has included chemotherapy,

external and internal radiation and she is now into her second round of an immunotherapy trial to buy her some more time with her family. “Her next immunotherapy treatment is on October 16,” Glenn said. “It’s a cumulative therapy that trains the immune system to fight the cancer itself.” Bracelets are being sold through the website in support of the cause and donations can also be made online. “The Macedon Ranges community has been unbelievable with their support,” Glenn said. Door to another world The work of a Kyneton indigenous artist will be a “welcome” change from the plain glass doors at the district hospital. Kyneton District Health unveiled its newly installed Aboriginal art, designed by Taungurung artist Maddi Moser, last week. Chief executive Maree Cuddihy said the transparent artwork, installed on the interior windows in the hospital’s main entrance, holds great significance to the community. “We want to communicate our sincere welcome to our indigenous visitors and Maddi’s work really helps us achieve this goal” Ms Cuddihy said. “We asked local artists from the Taungurung clan to submit artwork inspired by their Taungurung culture. “Maddi’s work blew us away and really captured our intention to recognise the history and culture of the indigenous people in our region.”

Moser has ancestral ties to the Taungurung clan and was inspired by the land for her mixed media artworks. She said the piece recognised the clan’s relationship with waterways, the land, and the manner in which time continues those connections, despite aspects of country changing. The artwork focuses on the 2018 NAIDOC theme Because of Her, We Can! Esther Lauaki

Water works for trainees The future looks bright for two young jobseekers learning the ropes of the water industry in Sunbury. Sunbury’s Cassidy Pitts spent the past few months training in business administration at Western Water’s Macedon Street office. The 19-year-old recently graduated with a certificate 3 from Swinburne University and hopes to use the skills she picked up on the job for her future career. “I had really good support from our trainer,” Cassidy said. “I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do when I finished school but this experience has given me a lot of skills to take with me into whatever industry I choose to go into.” Classmate Luke Papaevangeliou, of Hillside,

Mary-Anne Thomas MP

obtained his certificate 3 in water industry operations at Western Water and said he was keen to work his way up in the organisation. Luke is part of the field services team and is responsible for the maintenance of sewer and water pipes and pump stations. “Everyone was really helpful throughout my studies,” he said. “I’m hoping to stay at Western Water for a long time.” Customer and community relations general manager Graham Holt said Western Water offers traineeships across many areas of its business, including field operations, people and culture, water treatment and customer service. Megan’s guiding force

Man injured in car theft

By Esther Lauaki There is a long line of Guides in Megan Riley’s family – and she’s at the top. The 18-year-old is a fourth generation Guide and has earned a Queen’s Guide award this month. The Queen’s Guide award is the highest attainable award for members and takes nearly four years to earn. Megan started working towards it when she was 14 years old and was required to complete a range of tasks and community initiatives. “I’m pretty proud of myself,” she said. “I’ve spent 13 years in Guides. “My mum got her Queen’s Guide award too so that makes it more special.” Earning the badge was no mean feat. For the Girl Guide Promise and Law component of the award, Megan ran a discussion group about how the group’s values could have been applied during the Australian cricket scandal earlier this year. “I did a presentation about women in the royal family and their involvement in Guides for another component,” Megan said. Megan mentored younger members by running a camp as well as hosting events. One of her most memorable acts of community service was a trip to Africa with her church. “I went to Zambia to distribute handmade sanitary products to women and we ran workshops about personal care,” Megan said. “It was an amazing experience. “It was challenging being from a different culture … I experienced a real culture shock because they have very little.” She encouraged others to join the Guides for their self development, confidence, to learn practical skills and make new friends.

A Sunbury man is recovering from serious injuries including broken ribs, a fractured femur and leg wounds he sustained when he confronted a car thief. Investigators said that the 47-year-old man heard a noise in his house just after 4am on September 25 and went downstairs to find a man starting up his Jeep Cherokee. The owner tried to open the driver’s side door but the offender continued to drive away. Police said that during the struggle the owner fell underneath the car and was run over by a back wheel. They allege that the offender drove off and left the injured victim in the driveway of his Riddell Road property. The white Jeep was later seen on Old Lancefield Road, near Savages Lane in Woodend, about 4.50am. It was also involved in a collision at 6.10am on Tylden Woodend Road in Woodend, sideswiping a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction. The Jeep was found dumped on Corks Road in Macedon about 7am. The offender is described as aged in his mid to late 20s, of a solid build and with dark-coloured hair. Rock solid protection

Bushfire defence raised

By Esther Lauaki The protection of Hanging Rock will be a top priority no matter which party takes government next month. The state government last week made a $3 million election promise to fast track environmental protections on Hanging Rock and its East Paddock. The future preservation and management of the famous landmark will be guided by a 50 year strategic plan launched in September. Planning Minister Richard Wynne pledged that the funding would be used to buy the East Paddock site and implement “high priority actions” that were outlined in the Hanging Rock Strategic Plan, including new environmental protections, recognising the area’s Aboriginal cultural significance and boosting recreation opportunities. During a visit to the site last week, Macedon Ranges MP Mary-Anne Thomas said that the funding would ensure the famous landmark gets the care and attention it deserves. Mr Wynne promised upgrades to picnic areas and bathrooms would be funded under a re-elected government. “Alongside the Macedon Ranges, which we have now declared a Distinctive Area with legislative protection, Hanging Rock is a sacred part of our state, and it deserves to be protected, preserved and cared for,” Mr Wynne said. He said that the improvement works will be undertaken in partnership with the Macedon Ranges council, indigenous owners and locals. The Friends of Hanging Rock group expressed its support saying that plans for the area were “a great step in the right direction”. “We’re of the view that a discussion regarding the ownership of the East Paddock is long overdue.

Jon Marshallsay, Trent Nelson, Racquel Kerr and Rodney Carter. (Joe Mastroianni)

“We have long advocated for ‘One Rock’ and that the East Paddock should be formally incorporated into the Hanging Rock Reserve and ownership passed from council to the government, as was originally intended when the East Paddock was acquired.” Earlier this year, opposition MP David Davis criticised the 50 year strategic plan document

saying it did not rule out possible commercial developments at East Paddock. He said that a Liberal government would rezone East Paddock to ensure it is protected from commercial development. “The rock and its surrounds including East Paddock should not have intense inappropriate development,” Mr Davis said.

New technology will be used to protect parts of the Macedon Ranges from bushfires caused by power line failures. Works were carried out in Malmsbury to prepare the network for a new bushfire protection device. The device, called a Rapid Earth Fault Current Limiter, is part of a bushfire mitigation program and its introduction, to be rolled out by electricity company Powercor, was one of the recommendations from the 2009 Victorian Bushfire Royal Commission. It aims to reduce the risk of a powerline starting a fire by detecting when a powerline touches the ground or comes into contact with a tree branch, reducing the voltage to the line almost instantly. Powercor technical director Andrew Bailey said: “Providing reliable, affordable and safe electricity is our number one priority and we work throughout the year to ensure the electricity network is ready for the bushfire season”. “The introduction of this technology is one of the most significant changes made to our electricity network in more than 30 years and requires network upgrades and changes to allow the device to be successfully installed and operated.” The bushfire safety device will provide protection to suburbs including Sutton Grange, Metcalfe, Malmsbury, Drummond North, Joyces Creek, Maldon and Ravenswood South. NEWS STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

MY PLACE Romsey Neighbourhood House co-ordinator Michelle Balthazar believes in the spirit of community. She chats to Esther Lauaki about her love for the Ranges and people.

How long have you lived in the area? I’ve lived there for 15 years. Tell us how you came to be involved with the Romsey Neighbourhood House. When we first moved up here from Melbourne, I was lucky enough to get involved in the Macedon Ranges council initiative called Celebrating Lancefield Together Project, which gave me invaluable connections with the wider community. I worked with the Lancefield Neighbourhood House with that project and about four years later the role as co-ordinator at Romsey came up and I took it. What are you passionate about? I’ve always felt passionate about being part of the wider community and that’s why my family and I made the tree change. The Feed it Forward Movement is an initiative to be launched later this month by the Lancefield and Romsey neighbourhood houses. How was this movement born? The Feed it Forward movement came out of a couple of community consultation sessions where we asked the community what they’d like to see happen in terms of food security and food services. We’d been trialling a food bank service at Romsey for the past three years … where we’ve provided food parcels for

people in need. The movement involves the community in reducing waste and addressing the food issue in our community. How important is this service to communities within the Ranges? There is a real need for a service in the eastern corridor of the Macedon Ranges so that people don’t have to travel to get food. We found through the longer-running Kyneton Caring Communities project that 30 per cent of their population is having to travel into Kyneton town centre and pay petrol to access food supplies and if you can’t afford food, how can you afford petrol? How do people get involved in the movement? People can get involved by nominating themselves to be a generosity grower and growing an extra row of produce in their existing vegie patches to be donated to the initiative. Gardeners will be able to donate their excess food or produce during our monthly harvest weeks which coincides with the Lancefield Farmers market and runs until the following Tuesday. That food will be made into meals for harvest luncheons, frozen meals for the foodbank and monthly community cook-ups where we will teach people to make low budget meals and freeze them. (Marco De Luca)

What is your connection to the Macedon Ranges? I’m the co-ordinator of the Romsey Neighbourhood House and live in the Macedon Ranges in Benloch.

The official launch of Feed it Forward will be held on October 31 at the Lancefield Mechanics Institute. RSVP: 5429 6724 or bit.ly/2y6n33i

All aboard sports tram Members of the Sunbury United Sporting Club will be the proud owners of a retired W-Class tram. The tram is one of about 90 that have been retired from network operations over the past 30 years to be allocated to community groups. The club’s application was among 1500 expressions of interest received by VicTrack from around the country and overseas to inherit one of the iconic trams. Sunbury MP Josh Bull delivered the good news last week. “We’re proud to have found such a deserving home for one of our state’s retired trams,” Mr Bull said.

“I am delighted to see one of Victoria’s iconic trams come to Sunbury and thank the Sunbury United Sporting Club for all their hard work in putting together such a great application. “The tram is sure to be a hit with both locals and visitors alike and will become a focal point for our local area.” The club plans to give the carriage a new lease of life by restoring it as a multifunction community space in Sunbury. Applicants had to demonstrate that their tram would benefit the community, be accessible to the public or promote the state. Esther Lauaki

FIRE ACTION WEEK

7 - 14 October 2018 Stay informed

Message from the Premier This week is Fire Action Week, a time for all Victorians to start planning for a long and hot summer ahead. Low rainfall over winter has dried out much of the state and forecasts from the Bureau of Meteorology of a dry and hot summer means that we need to prepare for an earlier and longer fire season. Our dedicated emergency services are working with communities, businesses and local councils to reduce the risk for our state.

So please, talk to your family, friends and neighbours about your plans, and make sure you know when to leave and where to go to stay safe. You can also find out more information, monitor warnings and check the daily Fire Danger Ratings at emergency.vic.gov.au Taking the right steps now could make all the difference.

Recent bushfires – both here in Australia and overseas – remind us of the need to understand our own fire risk. Planning and preparing for fire is a responsibility that belongs to everyone.

The Hon Daniel Andrews MP Premier of Victoria

FIRE ACTION WEEK THE RIGHT TIME TO PREPARE IT’S YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO BE READY THIS SUMMER. Prepare your property, fire plan and emergency kit now. The reasons are black and white.

emergency.vic.gov.au Download the VicEmergency app

1. Plan what you’ll do in the event of a fire, talk to your household and know where to access information on high risk days. 2. Keep grass short. Fire can ignite and travel quickly through long grass. 3. Get rid of dry grass, leaves, twigs and loose bark around your home. 4. Remove or prune shrubs near windows and under branches of mature trees.

5. Cut back overhanging tree branches close to property – no branches within 10 metres. 6. Keep gutters and roof areas clear of leaf litter (if you are physically able to). 7. Remove all materials from around the home that could burn, such as boxes, furniture and woodpiles.

raemar College places a strong emphasis on community service. Underpinning the service emphasis is Braemar’s mission, which makes deep connections to the founding principles of the College. Through the provision of service opportunities, we encourage young people to be active contributors to their community, both locally and globally. By engaging in structured service programs, our students are empowered to make a real difference. This is both rewarding and affirming, as they realise they have a responsibility to give back, and the ability to influence change. During the recent term break, Braemar students, supported by dedicated staff, took up a variety of opportunities as part of our extra-curricular trips program. A group of 32 Year 8 students travelled to Japan, where they continued the links made over many years with the students and teachers from Tokai City. This program encourages our Middle School students to experience, first-hand, what it means to be an ambassador, building confidence, resilience and a sense of place in a global world. The sense of place grows with our Year 9 students, who spent a week at the Lilla Indigenous community near Kings Canyon. The students and staff provide hands-on support through construction programs, assistance in the classroom, revegetation and regeneration work. The returning students talk openly about the connection they have made to the land and the community. They have the opportunity to be guided by elders who have stories and meaning deeply connected with our country. A connection with country should not be taken for granted and our Year 10 students explore what occurs when connections are disrupted. By spending time volunteering at

alesian College Sunbury is a co-educational school providing quality education in a community of faith in the spirit of St John Bosco. Don Bosco’s unique charism is firmly entrenched in all aspects of the day-to-day lives of staff and students at Salesian College Sunbury. This charism, based on respectful relationships, is evidenced throughout our school. I believe the school’s values – community, learning, excellence and faith – play an integral role in the success of the College, acting as a constant reminder of what is important.

These four value pillars provide the basis upon which the college culture is built. It is a culture of support and encouragement; we strongly believe that every student has the ability to strive for greatness, given the opportunity and environment. With a team of dedicated teachers delivering the College’s enriching curriculum, students from Years 7 to 12 are encouraged to engage with the world around them, preparing them to be active and responsible members of society. We are proud to offer programs and activities that cater for the many and varied individual needs of students, as we recognise that every

A WORD FROM THE PRINCIPAL Sacred Heart College Kyneton

Sacred Heart College Principal Craig Holmes with students and, right, students and staff enjoy the possum-monitoring program, including the installation of the boxes. (Pictures: Supplied)

T

here’s something for everyone in our vibrant learning community … Hands-on experiences play a vital part in learning. Sacred Heart College Kyneton offers a broad range of experiences for students to ensure they are exposed to activities that give them a taste of the wider world. The College conducts and supports a wide variety of co-curricular activities for students and encourages students to participate in line with their abilities, skill levels and interests. Co-curricular activities fall within the following broad groupings – camps; community; creative and performing arts; debating and public speaking; learning area competitions and theme weeks; sport; and

also special activities including the College production and debutante ball. A special co-curricular activity for 2018 is the development of a possum-monitoring program in partnership with Macedon Ranges Shire Council. The program involves the construction and installation of possum boxes and camera traps in local reserves and parks around the Macedon end of the Wombat State Forest. The aim is to map the distribution and health of the under-studied feathertail gliders. The beautiful, mouse-sized glider possums are difficult to find, due their size and nocturnal behaviours, and research into their populations is limited. The project will add to national

data on species health. The students and staff recently checked the boxes and were thrilled to find that an array of animals, including sugar gliders, antechinuses and feathertail gliders had visited. In months to come, we hope to see some animals beginning to make their homes in the boxes. The impact these special projects can have on student learning is substantial, so Sacred Heart staff members are always looking for the best experiences to support learning in their subject areas. In this digital era, many of these experiences are no longer limited by the boundaries of location; the opportunities for learning are limited only by imagination.

Through the variety of experiences on offer, both in the classroom and from the broad range of co-curricular experiences, students emerge from their educational journey at Sacred Heart College with the confidence and courage to pursue their individual pathways and embrace the challenges of the future as global citizens. Sacred Heart College Kyneton is a vibrant learning community where students thrive. Craig Holmes, Principal Sacred Heart College Kyneton, 94 High Street, Kyneton. In Melbourne, the sale of a house during a campaign rises from 63 per cent to 84 per cent when it is advertised in a newspaper. Data has been collated to create an industry service called Media Maximiser, which tags almost every property that comes on to the market with its original price, where it was advertised, when it went on the market and was finally sold, and the difference between the asking price and the final deal. This research is the first from a non-newspaper publisher that provides statistical evidence of the value of print. The amazing results have given publishers further evidence that print is still a powerful tool. 2

Oozing sophistication and the charm of meticulous Victoriana detail, this master-built residence on about 8.9 hectares delivers high-spec liveability. Beautifully proportioned living spaces include a lounge-dining room with wood heater and traditional mantelpiece; a huge games room with fireplace and Victorian surround; and a vast indoor/outdoor room with barbecue and rangehood. The splendid oak kitchen has a walk-in pantry. As well as a study, there are five fitted bedrooms including the main which has an en suite. The main bathroom, with two of the many leadlight windows, has full Victorian styling. A magnificent outdoor set up includes a covered deck with pizza oven and barbecue; timber walkways and vined arbours; a second covered deck; and a glass gazebo. Included, among loads more, are paddocks, a shed complex, 90,000-litre tank, three dams and a bore.

In the bowl of a court on about 1170 square metres in Rolling Meadows estate, this well-built house has those important extras, such as a solid-concrete foundation, extra insulation and 2.7-metre ceilings. Lovingly maintained, it has three fitted bedrooms, four with study counted. The main bedroom has a walk-in robe and an en suite with an oval spa, dual basins and enclosed toilet. A dual-entry lounge-dining room is off the long tiled entry hall, while the family-meals area is divided from a rumpus room via a cavity wall. The kitchen, with an island bench under a downlit bulkhead, has a walk-in pantry and all mod-cons. Ducted heating and evaporative cooling and a drive-through triple garage with internal access are included. The front garden is a riot of cottage plants, bulbs and crepe myrtles and terraced side and back yards have fruit trees.

Built with the detail of a true craftsman, this new house will satisfy the fussiest buyer. It has Sydney bluegum floorboards, lovely wide stepped cornices on 2.7-metre ceilings, beautiful tiling throughout and quality in all aspects. As well as an open study, there are three fitted bedrooms, the main with a gorgeous dual-basin en suite with enclosed toilet. The main bathroom is similarly swish. Living areas comprise a lounge room behind double doors; and a spacious living domain incorporating the stunning kitchen. A waterfall Caesarstone island bench, a great walk-in pantry and all mod-cons deliver a sparkling cooks’ domain. Stacker doors open to a north-facing undercover alfresco. Other perks are double glazing, central heating, evaporative cooling, alarm, water tank to toilets, solar/gas hot water system and drive through double garage.

At the end of a small unit complex, less than a 10-minute walk from Sunbury Aquatic and Leisure Centre and three minutes by car from Sunbury Square shopping centre, this small, easily maintained unit will interest a downsizer, especially as base camp for nomadic travellers. It would also serve a young single or couple well as a starter. Entry under a porch is to the carpeted living area which has a double-door closet. The tiled adjoining kitchen has good storage, a brekkie bench and an upright gas cooker; the laundry with closet is next door. The bedroom has a triple-door robe and the bathroom is separate to the toilet. A glass sliding door opens to a paved patio and there’s a wall heater and garage.

Property of the week

gisborne 12 Fowler Court, 3437 RT Edgar: 5428 8633

Price: $1.15 – $1.2 million

In a picturesque street, this fine property with a very attractive front garden fits into the neighbourhood perfectly. The same is true of the house, a picture of elegance blended with deep-down liveability. Just as the period styling is subtle on the facade, so it is indoors, with wide stepped cornices all through and a ceiling rosette or two the Victoriana features. A thoroughly modern component is the flooring in the expansive living hub: tiles that look exactly like matte floor planks but with enormous practicality and good looks. The kitchen by local Peter Connors is another tres moderne factor. In the

French provincial style, it has white 2pac cabinetry with black handles matching the undermounted sink, as well as the pendants above a fab Stonesmart island bench with charcoal cabinetry beneath. An Asko dishwasher, a 900mm induction cooktop and a Miele 760mm underbench pyrolitic oven tick the quality appliances box, while a second pyrolitic oven is in the walk-in pantry with stone benches and a wine rack. This is a dream kitchen for cook and entertainer alike. A large grey-carpeted lounge room behind the front door has a brick fireplace. It neighbours a study, with timber work

stations and shelves, and the main bedroom, which has a fitted walk-in robe and an en suite with timber vanity unit. Three more fitted bedrooms, each with garden views and ceiling fan and one with a long timber desk, are along a hallway they share with the laundry – great storage and bench space – and the large main bathroom with spa; the toilet is separate. The third living area is a large carpeted games room that comes with projector and big screen for family movie nights. Outdoors, things are just as good. A giant gabled pergola, with brick paving underfoot, wraps down the side and all along the back.

Tall fence-screen plantings add beauty and privacy to this area, as they do for the vast lawn terrace – the perfect spot to drop in a pool. Right at the back of the block of about 2265 square metres, there’s a Colorbond shed, a chook coop and box vegie gardens. Other perks include split-systems, three-phase power, an alarm, 27,000-litre water tank with pump for gardens, a new instantaneous hot water system and a double garage with internal access. Kamen Ogilvie won the EDFL division 2 best and fairest. (Shawn Smits)

12374211-RC04-17

East Sunbury’s Kamen Ogilvie had a sense of deja vu at the Essendon District Football League awards night. He led the division 2 best and fairest award count heading into the final round of votes – the same position he found himself two years ago. While on that occasion he was pipped at the post, this year was his as he was named the league’s best division 2 player. It’s the third time Ogilvie has finished in the top five. Ogilvie was the early leader this year. He led by eight votes after round 10 and increased his lead to 10 votes after 17 rounds. He had to hold off a fast-finishing Cory McGrath. Ogilvie said he thought history was going to repeat itself and that he was going to finish second yet again. “It’s pretty cool,” he said of the win. “I thought I was a better chance a few years ago. I thought the same thing was going to happen again. “I knew I had a decent final round, so I was hopeful of getting votes. It’s nice to be recognised individually, but I’d much rather be talking about winning a premiership.” Ogilvie, who played a number of different roles across the season, returned to the club this year after spending a year in the Central Highlands Football League. Even in his year away from the club, Ogilvie was a regular at training. The constant travel to Hepburn was one reason he returned. The other was a pesky captain. “The travelling to Hepburn to train and play was pretty rough,” he said. “I was training

every Tuesday night [at East Sunbury] and some Thursdays when I worked late. I kept in touch with all the boys. “The other reason was the captain. Lucas Shaw kept hounding me to come back, so coming back meant I could shut him up.” Ogilvie was a big key to the Thunder’s run to the grand final. He was full of praise for a side he thought could go far when he returned to the club. The Thunder’s season suffered some disruption when, sitting at 7-2 and on top of the ladder, Steve Grey quit as coach. Ogilvie said he had never heard of that happening or experienced a coach leaving in those circumstances. “It has been an exciting year, being part of a club that has grown so much in a short period of time,” he said. “I thought we had the cattle to do it, but some guys left and the injury toll rose and we lost our coach. “At that stage, even playing finals was a long shot. I couldn’t be prouder.” At 26 and one of the oldest members of the playing group, Ogilvie reckons the future is bright. He said making the grand final, in which the Thunder lost to Roxburgh Park, was phenomenal and something that would provide a strong foundation for the young group. Most of the players have re-signed and are looking forward to a full pre-season under Glenn Hopkins, who has made a positive impact since joining the club as coach midway through this year’s season. Ogilvie was one of two Thunder players to finish in the top five of the league voting, with Shaw finishing equal fourth. Ogilvie said Shaw was one of the those players who was thriving under Hopkins.

Sunbury’s first-up victory a top fit for finals drive

Danny Fortune enjoys a good start to his time at Sunbury. (Shawn Smits)

Sunbury’s Bowls Victoria Pennant division 1, section 1 season is off to the ideal start. In what is seen as one of the toughest divisions in the pennant season, every win is vital. Sunbury defeated Lalor 90 (14)-78 (4) to get its season off to a winning start. Sunbury’s David Glennon said it was satisfying. “It was a good week with four of our six sides getting up,” he said. “It’s always good to get a win under the belt. “It’s important to get as many home game wins as possible.” Glennon said the rink of Commonwealth Games gold medallist Carla Krizanic made the difference in the top side’s victory. It had no trouble in winning 30-15, while Todd Trewarne’s rink won 26-21. Mark Cowan’s rink lost on the last shot of the day, while Dylan Filuk’s rink lost 20-13.

It was Filuk’s debut for Sunbury following a move from Bendigo East in the off season. Filuk was part of the triples team that took out the state title last year. He was one of three new players in the top side for Sunbury. Danny Fortune, who has come across from Romsey, was one of the standouts of the day as part of Krizanic’s rink. Lee Wesley was the other new addition to the side. With the team having made finals last season in its first season back in division 1, Glennon said they wanted more of the same this season. “The minimum target is to play finals, the alternate goal is gaining promotion,” he said. “We’ve got the new dome coming as well and it should be done by February.” Sunbury will this week face another tough challenge – Fitzroy Victoria. Among those they will confront will be

Gisborne keen for fresh talent

By Tara Murray Sunbury United got the first strike against Sunbury in the new Gisborne and District Cricket Association in the McIntyre Cup Premier Firsts season. With a fresh line-up, United’s new guns showed glimpses of what they can do. United bowled Sunbury out for 121, before getting the runs with just two wickets down. United finished 2-125. New United coach Archie Dudderidge said it was a perfect start to his time at Sunbury United. “It was good to have a win first-up,” he said. “We got wickets at the right time and then we got the runs quite easily. “There’s still a long way to go and we don’t know where we sit or where they sit. “We’ll look to get a few games under our belt.” United’s bowlers started the game well, with everyone contributing. Spin bowler Mark Koutroubas was the most successful with the ball, taking five wickets on debut for United. Koutroubas played first XI cricket for Taylors Lakes in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association last season. Steven Fogarty (38 not out) and skipper Adam Dudderidge top scored with 50 not out to get the job done with the bat. Adam, who followed his father across to United, also played in the VSDCA last season. Dudderidge said the win was a real team effort. “We bowled all six guys and they all contributed,” he said. “Coming in, the first day couldn’t have gone better.” Dudderidge, who has been involved with PEGS and Keilor, said he had no plans to come to Sunbury United but was approached by some friends who were also committee members. “I’ve known the president and vice-president and they sort of came to us about the role. “Adam the captain is my son. “The wicketkeeper [Damian Belia] is my stepson and Mark is best mates with my son, so they decided to come across together.” Shaun Brown, who runs a successful coaching program, is the other recruit for United. He played in the lower grades in recent years. Dudderidge said he was pleased with the club’s progress. “At pre season there’s been the best numbers they’ve had in a long time,” he said. “Someone said on Thursday that Thursday was the best night they had in 32 years at the club. “It’s really exciting.”

Brad Janner, who has won the past four men’s singles titles at Sunbury. Glennon said Janner, who didn’t play pennant last year for Sunbury, had moved near his new club and had decided to play for it. Meanwhile, Sunbury young gun Lisa Trewarne had a big week with the Victorian under-18 team last week at the final round of 2018 Australian Under-18 Championships. She was part of the girls’ fours team that won silver with Victoria winning the overall gold. Central Highlands Bowls Division gets underway this weekend. In division 1, Bacchus Marsh will face Gisborne Yellow and Gisborne Red will play Kyneton Golf. Kyneton will take on Lancefield and Romsey and Trentham will do battle.

for 84, before finishing 0-86. Romsey also made light work of Wallan. Romsey made 8-177 before bowling Wallan out for 82. Bacchus Marsh defeated Diggers Rest Bulla in the other match.

Gisborne is hoping the start of the cricket season will attract more players interested in joining its women’s side. The Dragons, who play in the Cricket Victoria Women’s Community Cricket north-west B T20 competition, are short of players and relied on fill-ins to help them kick off the season on Sunday. They won against Greenvale Kangaroos. The Kangaroos made 9-87, before the Dragons made 3-89. Dragons women’s co-ordinator Jodie Bannan said they had lost a few players and were struggling to attract new ones. “There’s a few from last year missing through injury and some have families,” Bannan said. “There’s also some who want to go and play at a higher level. “Hopefully with a bit of word of mouth, we can get a few more players.” The side will be coached by Ian Broome, who has previously coached men’s sides. Bannan said training had gone well. The team has been training on Wednesday nights from 5pm at Gardiner Reserve. In a promising sign, the Dragons’ junior girls program continues to grow. They will have an under-12 team and two under-16 girls teams. Bannan said the next step is getting them to progress through to the women’s team. “A lot are 13 or 14 at the moment,” Bannan said. “Some don’t want to play against women yet. It’s a bit of a stepping stone.” The season will start with T20 matches before Christmas and possibly longer-format games next year. Bannan said this year there was less travel as most of the sides were from the north west area. Two clubs, Greenvale Kangaroos and Caroline Springs, are fielding teams for the first time, while Melton Centrals and St Anthonys are second year sides. Sunbury was unable to get the numbers to form a women’s side for the first time. Bannan said anyone interested in playing was welcome to attend the club. “Even if you just want to come down to training and see if you like it.” Contact Jodie on 0422 268 002. Tara Murray

29 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ OCTOBER 9, 2018

SPORT STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

Lancefield on the front foot despite setbacks Despite losing a large chunk of its senior side, Lancefield is confident it can be competitive this season in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association. The Tigers have dropped from the McIntyre Cup competition to the Jensen Shield Sub-District Firsts competition, the old C-grade competition, due to losing so many players. They finished bottom of the McIntyre Cup last season after being deducted points for playing an unregistered player and were facing relegation. Ryan Millar will captain the Tigers this year. Millar is the only player from the club’s B-grade premiership in 2016-17 who will play full-time this season. “A few of the boys have been playing cricket

and footy each year and are a bit tired, so they decided they needed a freshen up,” he said. “There’s no bad blood and they’re welcome back any time. “I’m the only player left full-time from the B-grade flag, so it is a bit of a challenge, but we’ve got some really good guys around the club.” Millar said the club made the decision to drop down a further grade to ensure the side wasn’t getting smashed every week, denting the confidence of the young players. He said that while the Tigers were dropping grades on the field, they didn’t want to go backwards as a club. “We don’t want people to look at the club and think that no one wants to play for them,” he said.

“The club made the decision to make sure we weren’t going out there every week being smashed and not being able to retain those players in the next few years. “We want to get back up to the higher level, but we also want to ensure we’re enjoying our cricket.” Luke Harrison will provide some experience coming from Taylors Lakes in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association after moving to the area. Mark Caton and Samuel Taylor will provide experience, while Jarryd McGill, another member of the B-grade premiership, will play when he can. Cameron Stein, Connor Dowling and Callum Sankey are some of the young guys Millar said the club expected would get more opportunities.

Millar said the focus was on maintaining a positive environment. “We still have a good core group and most of them are kids with a positive attitude,” he said. “We’ll still put up a fight. We would like to win a few games and maybe sneak into finals – that would be the icing on the cake.” The Tigers had an interesting start to the season on Saturday, tieing with Malmsbury. Malmsbury was bowled out on the final ball of its overs for 195. The Tigers finished 7-195 in reply, with Jack Wilson top scoring with 54 not out. Macedon, St Anthonys and Kyneton were the other winners. Tara Murray

Kangaroo in twin wins on awards night

The Sunbury Kangaroos are set to move competitions. (Mark Wilson)

Roos vote to quit league By Tara Murray Sunbury Kangaroos members have voted emphatically to move to the Essendon District Football League next season. At a meeting last week, Kangaroos members voted 96-3 in favour of the move away from the Riddell District Football Netball League, well above the 75 per cent needed to make the move. Kangaroos president Allan Walters said he was surprised with how large the vote for the move was. “The decision is about allowing the club to make the decision where we play our football and netball in the future,” he said. “We understand we are the caretakers of the club and have the best interests of the club in mind which has led us to that situation.” Walters said there were several factors behind the move including a lack of netball teams. RDFNL clubs are expected to field four netball teams, while the EDFL has no requirement. Sunbury’s attempts to get a coach for next season have so far been unsuccessful, with no applications for the role. Walters said they were still hopeful of being

able to field at least one netball side next season in the EDFL. The club has struggled in the netball competition in past years. This year they won just one game across two grades. “Hopefully it’ll be the chance for us to re-establish a strong netball program with netballers playing in a competition where they can be more competitive,” Walters said. Club presidents from both EDFL and RDFNL will now have to approve the move. The RDFNL board will also vote on whether the Kangaroos can leave the league. If they vote no, AFL Victoria will make the final decision. If approved, the Kangaroos will start next season in the division 2 competition. Walters said they were looking forward to the challenges ahead of them in the EDFL. The club’s women’s side moved to the EDFL this year. The Sunbury Kangaroos Junior club will stay in the RDFNL. AFL Goldfields regional general manager Rod Ward has expressed his disappointment at the Kangaroos’ decision but said it was not unexpected. “The Sunbury Kangaroos members have been steered down this path,” he said. “It’s driven by the leadership having not

30 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ OCTOBER 9, 2018

shown commitment to netball. “We don’t shy away from the fact that we put equal emphasise on netball and football. “The Sunbury Kangaroos has not shown the same commitment to growing netball as they have to football. “The junior netball has been successful and it begs the question why the junior players don’t want to play there?” Ward said an RDFNL board meeting will be held in coming weeks. The Kangaroos are the third club in the past five years to try to leave the competition. Kilmore joined the Northern Football League at the end of 2015. In that case, AFL Victoria made the final decision after RDFNL clubs voted against the move. Broadford unsuccessfully tried to move to the Kyabram District Football League in 2014. It considered a move again for the 2019 season if the Kyabram league was restructured, however the restructure will not go ahead. Ward said he was “thrilled” Broadford had chosen to stay in the RDFNL. “Kyabram may have created a south and north league. “If there was a south league, geographically, it would have been a good fit for Broadford,” he said.

Saying Sunbury Kangaroos’ Bailee Said was shocked to win the inaugural Essendon District Football League Women’s best and fairest award is an understatement. Said, who won by one vote, wasn’t even in the room as the votes from the final few rounds were read out at the awards night last week. Having already taken out the rising star award earlier in the night, Said was in her car and about to head to the Kangaroos’ best and fairest night being held at the same time. After a couple of quick phone calls, she arrived back in the room just in time to receive her second gong. Said finished on 17 votes, one clear of Sunbury Lions’ Yolanda Jones and Westmeadows’ Jacinta Scott. Said said she was over the moon to take out the award. “I had no idea I was a chance at winning the best and fairest,” she said. “I had missed a few games as well, which made me think I didn’t have a chance at winning. “My reaction at the start, I didn’t believe that I had actually won, so I shrugged it off when I got a call. “When [coach] Allan [Walters] got a call from the league representatives telling us to come back for me to collect my award, then I realised and I could not be happier. “I never thought I would be able to win the league best and fairest. It’s a pleasure to receive this award and have recognition of how I went this year.” Said said she believed an improved fitness base had been a big key to taking her game to the next level. “I believe my skills and fitness improved throughout the year, which allowed me to play well for the Kangaroos, so as a whole I believe it went very well,” she said. Said had already been named on the bench in the team of the year. She was one of four Kangaroos players named in the team. Tylah Bell, who won the Kangaroos’ best and fairest award, Bec Dekazos and Tara Crisp were also named in the team. In other league women’s awards, Pascoe Vale’s Bridgette Aparo was named captain of team of the year, while Aberfeldie’s Claire Heffernan was named senior women’s coach of the year. Tara Murray

Mazda’s new lap of luxury By Derek Ogden, Marque Motoring Mazda says buyers of its popular CX-9 are so fond of life’s little luxuries that it has upped the ante on its aristo Azami model in the shape of the LE, thus bringing the range of the award-winning seven-seat sports utility vehicle to five. Customer demand was the reason for the addition of the Azami LE, says Mazda Australia managing director Vinesh Bhindi. “CX-9 sales have always been skewed to high-grade AWD variants, so we added Azami LE to give those looking for luxury even greater choice in the range.” These petrol-powered Mazda SUVs (no diesel) – consisting of Sport, Touring, GT and Azami in front or all-wheel drive, have a wide range of driver support systems, including Mazda’s comprehensive safety package, i-Activsense. The system has been extensively improved for a second time since the second-generation CX-9 was first launched in 2016 and run out across the entire model range. Alongside existing technologies, including smart city brake support (forward and reverse), blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert and driver attention alert, come Mazda radar cruise control with stop/go function, smart brake support, lane departure warning, lane-keep assist, traffic sign recognition and high beam control fitted standard on all grades. All Mazda CX-9 grades are now equipped with an active driving display, which projects key information onto the windscreen, and tyre pressure monitoring. The high-spec Azami gains even more advanced equipment, including front seat ventilation, a 360-degree view monitor, instrument panel-mounted 7-inch LCD TFT

The Mazda CX-9 Azami LE answers the call of customers wanting the finer things in motoring life.

multi-information metre display, heated steering wheel, windscreen de-icer and frameless interior rear-vision mirror. The new CX-9 also becomes the first SUV in Mazda Australia’s line-up to hook up to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with its MZD Connect infotainment system. Mazda CX-9 Sport and Touring have standard 18-inch alloy wheels with a pattern we are told is designed to accentuate their size. The addition brings a new level of

sophistication to cabin surroundings with rich red Chroma Brown nappa leather on the seats, genuine timber decorative panels on the doors and centre console, framed by ambient LED lighting. A minimalist overhead console design and hand-crafted box stitching on the leather wrapped steering wheel complete the deluxe interior. The touches of luxury would not be complete without a smooth ride in quiet, vibration-free

surroundings, so Mazda engineers went to work on the suspension and steering system to give the car a more linear driving feel and greater ride comfort, while noise, vibration, and harshness levels have been further reduced. The engine is mated with a six-speed automatic transmission and either front-wheel-drive or i-Activ all-wheel drive, except in the Azami LE which is all-wheel drive only. Our launch drive in Tasmania was book-ended by the top-notch Azami LE all-wheel drive, selling for $66,490, plus on-road costs, and entry-level Sport front-wheel drive, costing $44,990, a difference of more than $21,000. Mazda claims Azami LE AWD fuel consumption of 8.8 litres per 100 kilometres on the combined urban / highway cycle and the Sport FWD 8.4. The Tassie twosome came up with closer to 10 L/100 km in a mix of town and country driving.
