Ranges sport bid kicks on By Esther Lauaki

The Greens candidate for Northern Victoria, Riddells Creek resident Nicole Rowan, has welcomed the funding pledge. “The community has spoken as one voice in their support for this regional facility,” Ms Rowan said. “The Macedon Ranges sports community has demonstrated the clear demand for new indoor community and sports facilities and I am absolutely thrilled that they have been rewarded for all of their hard work.”

‘‘

The precinct has been a long time coming for locals

Sports precinct advocate Helen Sankey said that with current indoor sports facilities already chock full, the Macedon Ranges was in dire need of more local courts. “People don’t just have to leave their towns – they have to leave the shire to be able to access the indoor space that they need,” Ms Sankey told Star Weekly earlier this year. “That’s not just for basketball, that’s for all indoor sports. “Football ovals are desperately needed in our region, as well. “We’re seeing thousands of users every week and … facilities at capacity.”

Passion for fashion A Diggers Rest fashion designer’s whimsical creations took centre stage at the Fashion Awards Australia awards night earlier this month. Three of Olivia Waters’ designs, including a nude tulle couture gown with detailed boddess, were among hundreds of outfits paraded down the catwalk at the Encore Event Centre in Hoppers Crossing. Waters entered the long gown category for TAFE and open designers at the annual awards which featured 285 entries. Starting from a young age, Waters said that she would design gowns that she hoped to one day make. She later turned her back on studying law to pursue her passion for fashion. “My designs are inspired by the vintage eras of the ’20s and ’50s,” she said. Esther Lauaki

A regional sports precinct in the Macedon Ranges is a step closer thanks to a $6 million election pledge by the Labor Party. The state government has promised, if re-elected, to fund the indoor courts component of the $42 million Macedon Ranges Regional Sports Precinct in New Gisborne. The announcement on Friday came after a $5.6 million commitment in August towards the precinct’s outdoor facilities, including new sports fields, new tennis and netball courts and outside play spaces. The state government is promising $6 million will be spent on four indoor courts, including a show court and spectator seating, changerooms, multi-purpose rooms and other amenities to be integrated with the existing Macedon Ranges netball complex. The business plan for the multi-purpose indoor sports facility was launched last month after the completion of the project’s feasibility study. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said she was pleased to announce the new funding, which comes after a long-running community campaign. “The precinct has been a long time coming for locals and I’m proud to help deliver it,” Ms Thomas said. “This is more than just an investment in new courts – this is a real investment in local clubs and our local community.” Sports Minister John Eren said that the investment would mean Macedon Ranges sports clubs would have “the facilities they deserve”.

Kyneton’s new court security By Esther Lauaki Security will be tighter than ever at the Kyneton Law Court following its recent safety overhaul. The $2 million redevelopment of the heritage building was opened last week. It includes a new safe interview room, separate waiting spaces and a visual separation barrier in the courtroom to improve the safety of people attending court – particularly victims of family violence. There will also be three security officers present on sitting days to

provide entry screening and a roving security presence as well as escorting for vulnerable people when required. Kyneton courthouse is the earliest surviving courthouse in Victoria. It was established after separation from New South Wales in 1851. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said that the works were recommended in the Royal Commission into Family Violence. “This is the first major redevelopment of this historic courthouse since Ned Kelly was here as a teenager,” Ms Thomas said at the opening

- Mary-Anne Thomas last Monday. “These upgrades are part of our government’s work to end family violence and is in response to concerns expressed by our community.” A new secure connection between the

Kyneton police station and the courthouse will ensure the safe movement of people in custody. The courthouse upgrade also includes new disability access ramps, wider doors, new accessible toilet facilities and a refurbished heritage roof and interior. Construction began in October last year with hearings moved to Castlemaine. Attorney-General Martin Pakula said that the works were part of the state government’s $58.1 million investment in court safety and security.

Sunbury Kangaroos Football and Netball Club clubrooms could be in for a revamp thanks to a $500,000 election pledge. Liberal candidate Cassandra Marr has promised that the clubrooms at Eric Boardman Reserve will receive an upgrade to cater for the newly formed women’s football team and existing female netball club. Ms Marr said that with a high level of population growth in the Sunbury electorate, clubs desperately need redevelopments to keep up with membership demands. “Sport brings local communities like Sunbury together,” she said. “The Sunbury Kangaroos Football and Netball Club is home to approximately 1200 members and its growth is mirroring the skyrocketing popularity in women’s football and the population growth in Sunbury and surrounding communities. “I have worked tirelessly with community leaders to deliver this funding and if I’m elected to represent Sunbury, I will keep working hard and keep delivering.” Meanwhile, Hume council committed in its 2018-19 budget to spending $18 million over the next four years on upgrades to sporting grounds around the municipality including Eric Boardman Reserve. Another $5.6 million investment will be made over the next six years in sports ground lighting upgrades, as part of the Outdoor Sports Lighting Plan.

Macedon Rangges mayor Jennifer Anderson said walking to school was a great opportunity to develop friendships, get active and reduce traffic and pollution in the process. “We know that regular physical exercise is essential for a healthy body and mind, and it’s great to be able to support children to develop that mindset early in their lives,” Cr Anderson said.

Bushfire safety cost blowout A project to reduce the risk of fallen power lines starting bushfires and avoid a repeat of Black Saturday has blown out by $274 million in less than three years. As Victoria faces a potentially severe fire season, the Andrews government and the state’s electricity distribution businesses are grappling with an enormous increase in the cost and complexity of installing power line safety technology in fire-prone areas. Powerline faults caused 159 of the 173 deaths of the Black Saturday fires of February 7, 2009 and were responsible for an estimated $4.4

billion damage. Victoria elected after Black Saturday to adopt untried power line safety technology that promised to prevent fires and avoid the need to spend up to $10 billion replacing 40,000 kilometres of ageing poles and wires. Called rapid earth fault current limiters, the technology was predicted in November 2015 to cost Victorians $151 million, but save $411 million in bushfire damage costs. Energy Minister Lily D’Ambrosio said at the time that the limiters, though unproven outside of laboratory trials, “can reduce by 10 times the

start of bushfires from faulty power lines”. The devices operate like a safety switch for high-voltage wires, shifting the current from a fallen line into other cables within milliseconds. They are planned to be installed at 45 substations in the state’s most bushfire-prone areas by 2023 – but just one has been switched on so far, in Gisborne, with several more scheduled to be commissioned in time for summer. But the rollout of the “world first” technology has blown out in cost by 269 per cent since the Andrews government mandated it in 2015.

Costs are ultimately expected to hit $540 million – $389 million more than initially calculated – due to a series of unforeseen technical problems. Figures published this month by the Australian Energy Regulator reveal the cost presently stands at $424.82 million, for stages one and two of a three-stage rollout. The Australian Energy Regulator has found that Victorian households will pay an extra $10 on their electricity bills next year, and between $7 and $12 in 2020, to cover stage two. – The Age

Supershow success Emma Burnett is building a solid future in fitness. The Sunbury 20-year-old was a standout in the bikini category of the ICN Federation’s Muscle and Model Supershow in Melbourne earlier this month. She placed fourth in the under 21 division and third in the novice section, qualifying her to compete at the World Championships in Queensland on October 28. Burnett beat out 10 competitors in her bikini class and said she was against “a very tough line-up”. She told Star Weekly that fitness saved her life. “This is the first year of competing,” Burnett said. “I’ve been going to the gym since I was about 16 and decided to get more serious about it this year. “A lot of negative things have happened to me in my life and I used going to the gym and

keeping healthy as a way to help me deal with that. “My goal is to get my pro card, by winning an open class, and then go on to coach.” Just days out from the World Championships, Burnett’s gruelling regime includes training up to two hours a day with no days off and no “cheat meals”. “It’s really hard and takes a lot of discipline,” she said. “I’m leaning out at the moment which means eating only white meat and vegetables.” She thanked family, friends, coaches and tanners for their support. Cash to help fight family violence By Esther Lauaki Macedon Ranges council will be able to strengthen its resources in the fight against family violence thanks to more than $150,000 in state funding. The council will implement a workplace gender equality project, the Local Government Workforce Challenge, which aims to help the community understand the link between gender inequality and associated attitudes, and family violence. Chief executive Margot Stork said the state

funding, along with $10,000 from the council and $15,000 of in-kind support, would support the shire’s commitment to advancing gender equality. “The Local Government Workforce Challenge project stems from our realisation that if we are to be leaders in this space we need to lead by example by making sure our workplace culture and ethos is inclusive and welcomes diversity, and that our policies and practices demonstrate gender equality,” Ms Stork said. “Many of us spend up to a third of our waking hours at work.

“It makes sense then that workplace-based approaches to preventing violence against women have significant potential for impact. Who doesn’t want to work in an environment that supports equitable, inclusive and respectful attitudes and behaviours?” Ms Stork said the council would benefit from knowledge gained through other initiatives, including the Rural Challenge Gender Equality Leadership Program, which worked in CFA brigades and football netball teams to improve gender equality. In addition, council will also receive $57,000

in state funding to deliver the Moorabool @ Home, Work and play – Free From Violence project. This will include a workforce cultural change program, support for healthy and gender equal relationships for new parents and it will also promote gender equity in local sporting clubs. The government funding comes from the Free from Violence grant program, which aims to enable councils to embed primary prevention activities in their everyday work. – with Bendigo Advertiser

Mrs Mowatt said she was “shocked” by the success of her chicken pie. “You put so many hours into your work and then you get recognised by a big judging panel – it’s a bit of a shock. “There are a few things that make a good pie like the slow cooking of the filling. “Steve is a butcher, so it’s all about the ingredients that go into it … Never anything frozen.” Esther Lauaki

Sunbury’s care in the best of hands Sunbury Community Health, a not-for-profit community organisation, provides a range of services that respond to the needs of Sunbury and surrounding communities.

or more than 40 years, the organisation has offered health services to generations of residents. These services include childcare, therapy and support for families concerned about child development, counselling, physiotherapy, dental and other health services and activities for older adults. Sunbury Community Health is an Approved Home Care Package Provider. Home Care Packages, part of an Australian government program, provide money to buy services for older people (generally 65 years of age or older) to live well and safely within their homes and communities. Services can include things such as occupational therapy, podiatry, physiotherapy, home help and other community or family supports. Kerryn Jorgensen, Care Coordination Team Leader, says the care co-ordination team explains what is available and provides information on the steps needed to get assistance. Said one participant: “Originally I couldn’t shower myself and I had a nurse coming up to help me daily. With Home Care Packages, we got a flexi hose put in for the shower, a rail and a seat, well now, I’ve got to the stage I can do that on my own.” Community services have changed so much recently and can be hard to navigate, especially if people don’t know

where to start. “Earlier this year, we ran information sessions and they were so popular they’re on again,” she says. Another participant said: “Sunbury Community Health has been fantastic. We were given the opportunity to improve our lifestyle and improve what we needed to do in the situation we were in. We’d been using Sunbury Community Health prior to Home Care Packages and found the staff friendly, caring, informative and helpful. I thought I was fairly with-it with the medical side of things, but when it came to Home Care Packages, I could not understand. Without Sunbury Community Health’s help, I would have given up.” Kerryn says: “Our care co-ordination team encourages people with a friend or family member who could use some support to stay at home to get in touch.” Forthcoming session details: Thursday, November 8, from 6pm: Introduction to My Aged Care and Home Care Packages. Evolve’s window of opportunity Since Scott Vernon and Mark Sanders established Evolve Windows in Sunbury two years ago, the business has undergone considerable growth – mostly because people are rapidly switching to the undeniable benefits of double-glazed windows and the high quality windows offered by Evolve.

T

he business, which specialises in manufacturing and installing customised high-performance aluminium doors and windows, supplies the products throughout Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges, as well as across metropolitan Melbourne. Scott says many residential and office clients have benefitted from his Aussie-made product, whether as a new installation or an upgrade. “We’ve completed large bespoke projects, such as all the windows, automatic doors and glass for the recent Sunbury Aquatic and Leisure Centre upgrade,” he says. “Sholem Aleichem College in Elsternwick and Salesian College also feature our work, and some of our architectural residential projects have been completed for clients in Port Melbourne, St Kilda, Middle Park and Brighton.” Double glazed windows achieve massive energy-efficiency gains and is highly recommended for new builds or upgrades to existing windows. Evolve removes and disposes of existing doors and windows as part of the service. “All our work, with products manufactured in Sunbury, is tailor-made to client specifications and is carried out by expert installers,” Scott says. “We’ve recently upgraded our manufacturing capability through the acquisition of a Computer Numerical Control [CNC] machine.

Scott Vernon of Evolve Windows. (Pictures: Joe Mastroianni)

“CNC, using computers to control machine tools, will enable production to increase and the turnaround for our clients will be faster than before.” Another area of pride for Scott is his employment of locals and the support he’s pleased to offer to businesses nearby.

“Our business has seen significant growth since we started and as a result we’ve had to increase our office and floor staff numbers to keep up with the demand,” Scott says. “If you would like us to provide you with a quote, we would love to hear from you, just give us a call.

“It’s all full steam ahead and we’re looking forward to continued success.” Evolve Windows, 18a Kurrle Road, Sunbury. Opens 8am-4pm Monday-Friday. Inquiries: 8746 9777 or visit evolvewindows.com.au

Plenty off room for the best service Kym Schubert, manager of Storage King Sunbury, says she loves her job and that looking after varied customer needs keeps her on her toes. he’s a people person who relishes a chat and has a strong focus on treating clients like family, listening carefully to their needs. “We’re seeing a big upswing in the need for self-storage units of all sizes,” Kym says. “We have large units for storing furniture and the like, but also small ones, which are great for people who want to safely store valuables during bushfire season. Or people use them to safely store priceless family treasures while they’re away travelling.” Storage King, operating in Sunbury for the past 20 years, isn’t just about the storage units. It’s also the place for packaging supplies when moving house, from bubble wrap to large cartons and everything in between. The packaging range is also handy when sending articles overseas. In fact, the Sunbury storage specialist has an international parcel service on site. Parcels of more than 200 kilograms can be handled here, exceeding what can be managed through a post office. When it comes to moving house, Storage King provides a furniture removal service – both trucks and removalists. “Anyone would agree that moving house is a stressful time, but we’re ready to make it as hassle-free as possible,” Kym says. “Assistant manager Loredana and I will do all we can to ease the load. “It’s something we both enjoy. The office is open six days a week so at least one

Stunning architecture and construction of the highest standard from local Andrew Sanderson is a mighty fine start at this house on about 400 square metres, one of those sharing a communal lifestyle moderated by an owners’ committee. Each property is entirely independent, yet linked with five others through use of an array of bountiful vegie and herb boxes, fruit trees, alfresco areas and a shared meeting house/potting space built with the same wonderful timber, double-glazed glass and iron materials as each house. A superb place to live or retire, No. 5 is beautiful in all aspects. It has spotted gum floorboards virtually all through, enormous

double-glazed panes of glass topped with transoms, sublime joinery and top-notch appointments. The living room, with a Stovax wood heater and a door to a 55-square-metre deck, links with the heart-winning kitchen. This has an island bench, in joined sections of charcoal stone and sensual timber, around which six can sit in comfort. Seamless soft-close cabinetry oozes class, splashbacks are stainless-steel, the 900mm cooker bears the Bosch label and there’s a concealed bar fridge and instant boiling filtered water at a discreet sink. A charcoal desk under open shelves provides a spot for laptop work.

The neighbouring butler’s pantry, with second sink, incorporates a Smeg dishwasher, a Bosch fridge and washer/ dryer/trough – all done very stylishly. It also provides access to the remote-controlled garage with workshop space. Bedrooms, at either end of the house, each have en suites. The second bedroom has first-class joinery in the built-in robe, while the en suite mirrors that in the main bedroom: charcoal stone-topped vanity and a walk-in shower with apple-green glass splashbacks. The main bedroom also has an in-wall slider to a skylit walk-in fitted robe, plus a door to the deck. A split-system and ceiling fans are

supplemented by wraparound insulation. The deck, with a cantilevered umbrella, looks out to low-upkeep gardens with a paved area surrounding a moveable fire pit. Bamboo lines the side fence, past which is a garden shed and another garden area. A bore services the entire compound and No. 5 has a water tank providing all the water needed (plus there’s town water), hot water is solar/electric, while 40 solar panels nearly eliminate energy bills. This remarkable place is within a five-minute walk of shops, eateries and primary school. Carole Levy

FFV

Gisborne has reappointed Danny Ciantar as coach of its senior men’s side. Ciantar, in his first season, took the Sky Blues to second in FFV state league 5 west, which was enough to earn the side promotion into state league 4 west for next season. Hrvoja Barun has been appointed the reserves coach.

Kyneton is after a new women’s football coach with Kevin Hall deciding to step down from the role. Hall coached the Tigers this season after the club parted ways with Paul Rizzo before the season started. Sunbury, happy to be back at home, has returned to the Bowls Victoria Pennant division 1, section 1 winners’ list. Sunbury notched up an 82 (14)-68 (4) win against Brunswick, which also entered the match with a 1-1 record. Sunbury’s David Glennon said the club had a little bit of reshuffle among its teams in a bid to turn things around after the loss to Fitzroy Victoria the previous week. Lee Wesley skipped for the first time since coming to Sunbury. His rink lost 19-18 on the last end of the day. “Lee is an ex-club champion at other clubs,” Glennon said. “He almost got us another two points today.” The up-and-down start to the season for Mark Cowan’s rink continued. It lost 21-14. Carla Krizanic’s rink remains unbeaten after a 22-16 win. Todd Trewarne’s rink won 28-12. Dylan Filuk, who skipped in the opening two rounds, moved into Trewarne’s rink as the third player. The win moves Sunbury to third, behind only the undefeated Moonee Valley and Melton teams. “After picking up four points on the road last week … to get a good win with a healthy scoreline, we’re in a good position,” Glennon said. Sunbury faces Essendon (2) this week. The club’s fourth side was the only other winner for Sunbury on Saturday, with the sixth side’s fixture washed out. Sunbury’s mid-week women’s pennant side had a good win against Whittlesea. Sunbury won just one rink, but still came away with a 62 (12)-52 (4) win.

Lancefield grabs the points on a day awash with draws Lancefield was the big winner in Gisborne and District Cricket Association Jensen Shield Sub-District Firsts on Saturday. With rain playing havoc around the grounds, many games across the grades didn’t get started, let alone achieve results. While three of the four games in the Jensen Shield got a start, the Tiger’s match with Blackwood was the only game in the division to be completed. And it was the Tigers that came away with the full points after a comfortable win. The Tigers batted first, making 7-152 from their overs. Luke Harrison was the mainstay of the innings, top-scoring with an unbeaten 70. The next highest score was 14.

The Tigers bowled Blackwood out for 110 in the 31st over. Ryan Millar did the damage with the ball, taking 5-15 off seven overs, while Andrew Richardt took two wickets. The win moves the Tigers to equal top after three rounds, percentage behind Kyneton, which is yet to lose a match. Blackwood remains without a win. The other two Jensen Shield matches that got starts were declared draws. Macedon made 6-184 from its overs against St Anthonys. Chris Axton top-scored with 48, while Brett McKay made 39 at the top of the order. The St Anthonys innings lasted just 22 balls before rain ended play. The Saints were 1-6. Mitch Graham took the wicket.

Malmsbury was 3-73 halfway through its innings against Sunbury United when the rain started falling. Lucas Hyatt and James Brown took a wicket each for United. The players didn’t get the chance to return to the field. There was no play between Rupertswood and Kyneton. In the Johnstone Shield District Firsts competition, all matches were declared draws due to the weather. Just one game had any play, with St Anthonys and Rupertswood getting through more than half their game at Arnolds Creek Reserve. Rupo made 8-165 after being in trouble at 7-55.

Romsey picks up a win

Matthew Milne picked up four wickets on Saturday. (Shawn Smits)

United put up a good run chase, but fell short, finishing 9-187. Mark Koutroubas top scored with 54. Wallan looked on track for its first win of the season against Sunbury, before rain ended play.

Kyneton Golf flag campaign has drive

By Tara Murray Romsey won a last-over thriller against Woodend in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup Premier Firsts. Romsey needed all of its 40 overs to overcome Woodend’s score of 158. They finished 6-159. Romsey captain-coach Ben Way said it was good to get back on the winners’ list after a poor match the week before. He said they were confident they could chase down the runs. “We were pretty confident going out there to bat,” he said. “We batted pretty well and kept our composure. It got down to the last over. “It makes it exciting playing in those sorts of games. Woodend is always up there around finals.” Chris Burkett top scored with 41 at the top of the order and Way made 35. Earlier, Brett Warner top scored for Woodend with 38. Josh Eastley, at the top of the order, was the only other player to pass 20. The win is Romsey’s second of the season, after a big first round win against Wallan. Romsey has kept the same playing group as last year in its campaign to go at least one step further after making last year’s finals. Way said while they were taking it one week at a time, they were also working towards a top two finish for a home final. “We’re a bunch of local players,” he said. “We want to improve on what we did last year and what Chris [Burkett] did the six seasons before that.” “Hopefully at the end of the season we’ll be around the mark.” They have recruited talented youngster Matthew Milne to add another local player to the mix. Milne, who was the pick of the bowlers on Saturday taking four wickets, returns to the club from premier cricket. He previously represented Vic Country at the national championships. Way said Milne fits in perfectly with the group. “He’s a talented individual and he will get better and better with the bat and the ball. “He wasn’t getting the opportunities he would have liked and wanted to spent some time in the middle with his batting. “He’s looking to enjoy his cricket and make plenty of runs and take plenty of wickets.” The win is a bonus for Romsey, with just two matches with results. Bacchus Marsh was the other winner on Saturday in the McIntyre Cup, defeating Sunbury United. The Bulls made 6-210 off their overs, with Milinda Sepala (91) and James Lidgett (71) leading the way. Damien Edwards took 4-28 for United.

John Lane, batting at nine, made 57 not out, while No.10 Max Howell was second highest scorer with 25 not out. John Jensen took 3-25 for St Anthonys. The Saints were 1-18 in the fifth over when the players had to leave the field because of the rain. The two sides, along with Riddell, each have two wins and a draw after three rounds. Across the association, just eight senior matches, including two in the top grade, were completed due to the weather. Bacchus Marsh and Romsey were the winners in the McIntyre Cup, over Sunbury United and Woodend respectively.

Wallan was 2-30 in reply to Sunbury’s 133 when play was halted and the two teams had to settle for a draw. Diggers Rest Bulla and Gisborne also did not get on the field.

Kyneton Golf is running hot at the start of the Central Highlands Bowls Division top-grade season. After beating reigning premier Gisborne in round one, Golf backed it up on Saturday to account for cross-town rival Kyneton. All four rinks were one-sided, with Golf winning three of them for a 100 (16)-84 (2) win. Stephen Taylor, Wayne Turner and Anthony Mathison led the winning rinks for Golf. Golf secretary John Trounce said it had been a great start for the club’s top team. “We won the first game at Gisborne on their synthetic green and they’ve never been beaten on that,” he said. “This week we beat Kyneton, so we’re going along well. “Our division 2 side hasn’t been so good. We haven’t won a game, so we can only get better.” Having finished runner-up last season to Gisborne in top grade, Golf expects to be in the mix again this year. Trounce said that like any team, Golf would like to have another shot at adding to its premiership tally. “We haven’t had much change in personnel – it’s pretty much the same people,” he said. “They are pretty experienced.” Things are going well off the greens for Golf as well, with an extension to the clubhouse providing bigger and better facilities. In other division 1 results, Romsey defeated Gisborne Yellow 103 (14)-92 (4). Cameron Austin’s rink was a key in the win, winning by 10 shots. Bacchus Marsh was too good for Lancefield, winning 108 (14)-92 (4), while Trentham and Gisborne Red took home nine points each, with their match washed out. In division 2, Woodend defeated Gisborne, 79 (14)-70 (2), and Kyneton Blue smashed Diggers Rest, 76 (16)-56 (0). Kyneton Golf remains without a win after losing to Kyneton Red, 82 (14)-50 (2). Macedon Ranges and Bacchus Marsh’s match was washed out. Bacchus Marsh, and Macedon Ranges were the winners in division 3, with victory against Kilmore and Diggers Rest respectively. All other matches were washed out. Tara Murray

Tigers maul Pirates in solid first win for the season Kyneton Tigers put their name onto the winners’ list for the first time this season in the Country Basketball League north-east women’s competition. After a round one loss, the Tigers were on a mission on Saturday night to turn things around against the Echuca Pirates. The Tigers showed some good signs for the rest of the season in a dominant performance, winning 93-53. Coach Chris Tighe said while he was happy with the win, he believed they could have taken it up a notch. “It was pretty good,” he said. “I would have liked to have won by more, as with the roster we have I think we’re better than that.” The big margin meant everyone was able

to get plenty of court time and nine of the 12 players hit the scoreboard. Tighe said it was important to make sure everyone got court time in such matches. Rebecca Van Kuyk, who has been part of the Sunbury Jets’ Big V state championship side, continued her good form, top scoring with 25 after scoring 17 points in round one. Michelle Fletcher (20 points), Molly Greetham (14 points) and Brooke Mangan (11 points) also scored double figures as they spread the load around. Tighe said the combination of Van Kuyk and Fletcher was developing well. Fletcher missed the opening round match. “They have just gelled really quickly and it’s good to watch. Michelle is great and she’s taken the younger girls under her wing,” he said.

He said even in the gym, the intensity level rises when she walks in. “Beks has added some experience to the side. We’re lucky she moved to a country address. “You have to play domestic basketball as well, so it helps Kyneton out as well.” The Tigers, which sit 1-1, this week host the Maryborough Blazers. Tighe said the biggest issue at the moment was picking 12 players each week. “We can improve a lot on court and improve in running out sets,” he said. “I’m pretty happy with how things are good. I think we’ll make a good press to the finals.” The men’s side suffered a thrilling loss to the Pirates in the north-west competition. The match went down to the wire but the Pirates ran out with the win on 68-64.

Meanwhile, Tighe has been appointed the Sunbury Jets’ youth league women’s coach for next Big V season. Tighe, had been assistant coach for the Jets’ state championship women’s side the past two years. The youth league side will probably play in the championship division after it won the division 1 title this year. They claimed the division 2 title last year. Tighe said it was the next step in his coaching journey and was looking forward to continue the good work done by Andrew Seidel. “We’ve just had some tryouts and I’m happy with who turned up,” he said. “There will be competition for spots.” Tara Murray

Sunbury stars kick on By Tara Murray Two former Sunbury United juniors have been selected for one of the top soccer programs in the country. Holly Murray and Maxine DiBlasi have been named in the National Training Centre program, which is a key pillar in the Football Federation Australia development model. The comprehensive program, which includes local and tournament matches, aims to prepare players to progress through the ranks. Murray joins the program after being called in to help her age group’s NTC side at the national titles last year. “I was playing at my club [South Melbourne] and they asked me to try out for nationals,” she said. “We finished third and I got to captain one of the games. I was really surprised. I had never played with those players before.” Murray said her experience early this year in representing the NTC program had helped when she was asked to trial for a program place. She started playing soccer with Sunbury United, after having had to watch her brother play. She said that time set her up for what was to come. “I was the only girl in my team and had to play against the boys at Sunbury,” she said. “That really helped me become the player I am now.” As well as playing at the national titles again, the 14-year-old will play for the NTC in the under-19 National Premier League. Murray’s former South Melbourne club mate, Maxine DiBlasi, will participate in a younger age group in the NTC program. Like Murray, she started her soccer at Sunbury United before moving into other programs to develop her skills. “I played with the boys at Sunbury and then kept going to different clubs and moved up the ranks,” DiBlasi said. The 13-year-old, who plays mostly as a striker, said being part of the NTC program was a wonderful opportunity. “I’m excited to make the team,” she said. “At the trials, I didn’t do as good as I would have liked. Before the last trial, I told myself I needed to push myself and it paid off.” Like Murray, she’ll play at the national titles and play for the NTC in the NPL. Both girls dream of playing for the Matildas in the future. Sunbury United Sporing Club president Paul DiBlasi, Maxine’s father, said it was fantastic for the club to see two former players doing so well. “I was junior president of the club at the time [the girls were at the club] and implemented some good coaching for both the boys and girls,” he said. “To see these two girls progress so far – we would like to think this might encourage more female participation at the club. We’ve had a full senior team for the last 10 years and are currently preparing to have an under-18 team next year and a lot of girls throughout our junior teams.”

Gisborne captain Amber Andrews. (Shawn Smits)

Twin victories for Gisborne Gisborne remains undefeated after four rounds of Cricket Victoria’s Women’s Community Cricket north-west B T20 competition. The Dragons’ strong early season form continued on Sunday, winning both their matches. The Dragons faced the Greenvale Kangaroos in the first match of the day. The Dragons won the round one match between the two sides. On Sunday, the Kangaroos won the toss and elected to bat, making 6-50 from their 20 overs. The Dragons had no trouble chasing down the runs, scoring 2-64 in 12 overs. The Dragons then backed it up against St Anthonys, which had a strong win against Melton Centrals earlier in the day. The Dragons openers did the job, making 0-114 off their overs. But the match was a lot closer than the earlier encounter, with the Saints finishing on 4-108, giving the Dragons a six-run win. Emily Consiglio was the pick of the bowlers for the Dragons after taking three wickets. Captain Amber Andrews took the other wicket. The Dragons were one of just two teams to win both their matches on Sunday, along with EMP/Willy Congs. The Dragons sit atop the ladder, percentage ahead of the Congs. The Dragons will be at home again this week, facing Coburg 2, before a competition bye takes place the following week. Maxine DiBlasi and Holly Murray have been selected to take part in the National Training Centre program. (Damjan Janevski)

Lexus ES upgrades impress By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring In an interesting move, Lexus will import only hybrid versions of its Lexus ES 300. Now in its seventh-generation, the ES is being offered in Luxury and Sports Luxury grades. Compared with the outgoing gen-six Lexus ES, power has been increased by almost six per cent to 160kW, while fuel consumption has been reduced by 16.4 per cent to 4.6 litres/100 kilometres as measured on the Australian combined cycle. A new-generation 2.5-litre petrol engine is among the most thermally efficient in a production vehicle. It is linked to an electric hybrid system with components that are smaller, lighter and more efficient than in the outgoing model. In an apparently odd move, the Japanese company that has made its name by providing near-silent running is offering drivers the chance to turn on an “active sound control”. This generates an audio feedback that gives the aural effect of up and downshifts like those experienced with a geared automatic transmission. We will comment on this when we borrow a road test car from Lexus. Alloy wheels are standard; 17-inch for the ES Luxury and 18-inch under the Sports Luxury. To counteract noise that can be generated by low-profile tyres, the 18-inch wheels have a hollow rim structure to help reduce the noise. Infotainment is controlled through a 12.3-inch multimedia screen and there’s a wireless phone charger. Satellite navigation, Lexus Enform and DAB+ digital radio are standard. ES Luxury features a 10-speaker Pioneer audio system. For Sports Luxury, the Lexus ES debuts a 17-speaker Mark Levinson surround-sound system. The Lexus Remote Touch Interface pad has

been redesigned and gains vibration feedback. Heated front seats in ES Luxury offer 10-way power adjustment. In Sports Luxury, they are also ventilated. There’s 14-way adjustment for the driver’s seat and 12-way for the passenger seat. Rear headroom has been improved and luggage space benefits from the hybrid battery being relocated under the rear seat. The LCD instrument panel incorporates a 7.0-inch multi-information display.

Other ES Luxury equipment includes dual-zone airconditioning, automatic, a moonroof, electronic park brake, premium trim and a power-adjustable steering column. Sports Luxury expands the airconditioning to three zones with a humidity sensor. It is also equipped with a hands-free boot opener, semi-aniline leather-accented seats, heated steering wheel and adjustable, heated rear seats that recline. New ES 300h is equipped with the latest

active safety and driver assistance technologies from the Lexus Safety System+. New features include daytime cyclist detection as part of the comprehensive pre-collision system. Already capable of detecting oncoming vehicles and pedestrians, the system has also been enhanced to detect pedestrians at night. All in all, the stylish new Lexus ES sounds like a most impressive vehicle and sells for a moderate price for this prestige class.
