Fast rail pledge By Charlene Macaulay

Knot your average fashion show

(Marco De Luca)

Wyndham Vale could receive its own electrified metropolitan train line under a state government election promise to deliver fast rail to the regions and more metro services to growth suburbs. Premier Daniel Andrews said if re-elected this November, the Labor party would spend $100 million developing a business case for the Western Rail Plan, which includes the full separation of regional and metro train services on the Geelong and Ballarat lines by building electric rail tracks from the city to Wyndham Vale and Melton. Two new stations would also be built at Melton and Wyndham Vale, while a potential connection from Wyndham Vale to Werribee is also on the cards and could form the western section of Labor’s proposed Suburban Rail Loop. This means that instead of V/Line trains sharing track with metro trains, the services would run express from the city to Wyndham Vale and Melton along a separate stretch of track to allow faster services and patronage growth. Regionally, it means train trips from Geelong to Melbourne would also be streamlined down to 45 minutes. According to government data, patronage of Wyndham trains has jumped from 95,000 monthly boardings in 2015 to 166,000 boardings in 2018. Construction of the $150 million plan would start by 2022 and take about a decade to complete. Mr Andrews said the growth of Melbourne’s western suburbs meant the train network needed an overhaul. He said this project was the missing link that would integrate the Metro Tunnel, Airport Rail Link and proposed Suburban Rail Loop. “This plan will deliver the transformation that our state needs – electrification of rail lines out to the west, and fast rail to Geelong and Ballarat, returning country trains to country communities,” he said. The announcement comes a fortnight after the state opposition vowed to build a European-style high speed rail link between Geelong and Melbourne if the Coalition wins government. Under the Coalition plan, which is expected to cost between $15-$19 billion, the Geelong Metro project would re-establish a direct train service between Geelong and Werribee, with a service from Werribee to Waurn Ponds via Geelong.

The Fashion Awards Australia held in Hoppers Crossing last week featured many creative designs, including this outfit by Ballarat Grammar student Nicholas Gilbert. The annual competition aims to recognise talented school and TAFE students and new and emerging fashion designers. Gilbert’s design placed first in the years 11/12 costume fantasy section. In the same category, Lucy Kirwin-Hamilton, also from Ballarat Grammar, placed second and St Albans Secondary College student Julie Lay placed third. ■ More

Cash splash for school park plan By Charlene Macaulay Werribee’s former Glen Devon Primary School site will be transformed into a multi-use park next year thanks to an $870,000 state government grant. Werribee MP Tim Pallas last week announced that the site would be redeveloped to include pathways, park benches, drinking fountains and a nature space for children, and that it would be made suitable for a range of activities, including ball games, dog walking and other social activities.

He said work would begin in June next year and be completed later that year. As reported by Star Weekly in January, the former Glen Devon site, on Market Road, had become an eyesore and attracted antisocial behaviour since the school closed in 2010. Its buildings were extensively damaged by fire in late 2011. “It didn’t leave much of a community statement,” Mr Pallas said. “What it left was … unfinished work to do. “We do need to remediate this site and the way that it is owned by the community and

[make it] something that is seen as an asset that the community can enjoy.” Wyndham councillor Mia Shaw, who advocated for the Glen Devon site to be restored and made available for community use, said she was glad the government had listened. “Finally, we’re going to be able to use this [site] in a positive way,” she said. The grant is part of $3.82 million going to six Wyndham projects through the state’s Growing Suburbs Fund, including: • $1 million for the Grange Community Centre redevelopment.

• $1 million for a new youth surfer outreach bus. • $425,000 for the Central Park Community Centre redevelopment. • $325,000 to upgrade Golden Square Reserve in Hoppers Crossing. • $200,000 for the redevelopment of Friars Place Park in Point Cook. Wyndham council has chipped in $2.8 million towards four of these projects. Wyndham mayor Peter Maynard thanked the state government for the funding contributions.

As a child, she had to be careful around TVs and computers that could trigger seizures. She grew out of her photo-sensitive epilepsy in her teenage years, but her epilepsy returned when she was in year 12 – this time triggered by stress or while she was asleep. “I have no idea when I have one,” she said. “The only time I know I’ve had a seizure is when I wake up in an ambulance.” While the 26-year-old Werribee resident

Two Hoppers Crossing schools will receive multi-million dollar upgrades if Labor wins the next election. The incumbent government promised last week it would fund $12.4 million to build the first stage of Warringa Park School’s master plan if it is re-elected come November. Stage one of the master plan involves redeveloping Warringa’s old classrooms and facilities, upgrading the school’s administration building and construction of new classrooms and a multipurpose room. Warringa Park School is a specialist school that caters for students aged five to 18 years who have a diagnosed intellectual disability ranging from mild to profound. The government has also pledged to build the first stage of The Grange P-12 College’s master plan. The $9.5 million project would upgrade the school’s science block, and blocks F, G and H. Werribee MP Tim Pallas said Labor had already funded part of both school’s master plans but more work needed to be done. “Warringa Park School is great local school and only Labor will deliver this massive upgrade to give students and staff the state of the art facilities they need to achieve their best,” Mr Pallas said. Education Minister James Merlino added: “The Liberals closed schools and cut funding to our education system and given the chance, they’ll do it again”. Charlene Macaulay

Kevin Hillier, not the retiring type, ponders the options

I

have always found the concept of retirement an interesting source of contemplation and conversation. For some, it is a choice. Others have it foisted upon them. I doubt I will ever formally retire – it just has no appeal to me at the moment. The definition of retirement varies, but it mostly revolves around the words age and usefulness. I understand escaping from the drudgeries of working life, which is why I have always done many and varied things in my career to avoid that very thing. But I am lucky. My line of work provides an array of opportunities. I also work in an industry that is not physically demanding, such as a manual trade, and I enjoy the luxury of being self employed. My retired friends tell me they are busy with one thing or another, and enjoying the lifestyle, especially those with grandchildren. Economics certainly dictate the style of your later life. We can’t all afford to be hopping from one luxury cruise ship to the next.

Each generation is being asked to take more responsibility for funding itself, with the expectation of a government funded-retirement fading quickly into the distance. Superannuation has always bewildered me (and many others I suspect) because of the sheer volume of paperwork associated with every minor detail. It is as if the finance people wanted to keep us in dire need of their services to make sure their retirement was comfortable. Retirement means a new form of living arrangement for many – retirement villages. What a booming industry it is. The villages are like cruise ships without the seasickness and boarding passes. They boast multiple sports and activities, pools, live entertainment, shopping tours and, probably the biggest selling point, human contact. Work gives you a purpose, a destination and the chance to communicate with others. The importance of those in our day-to-day lives should never be lost in the transition to retirement. It is, after all, a retirement for life, not from life. â–

More than 30 firefighters attended a suspicious fire at a vacant factory in Sayers Road, Laverton North about 8.30am on October 11. Firefighters arrived at the site to find a shed at the property ablaze. Police are investigating the cause of the fire, which took about 75 minutes to bring under control.

Wyndham’s road work wish list By Alesha Capone Wyndham council has called on the state government to upgrade a number of roads and intersections within the municipality. The council has compiled a list of road projects it would like to see undertaken in the area after conducting traffic flow studies and examining safety levels on roads for which the state government is responsible. The list includes an overpass on Ison Road to create a second railway crossing west of Werribee.

The council has also called for the duplication of Ballan Road (from Armstrong Road to Bolton Road) and Sayers Road (from Derrimut Road to Palmers Road). In addition, the council wants the intersections of Point Cook and Sneydes roads, Ballan Road and Evergreen Drive, Ballan and McGrath roads, and Geelong and Alfred roads to be upgraded, plus pedestrian-operated signals to be installed on Heaths Road near Woodville Park Drive. Council economy, innovation and liveability director Peter McKinnon said the road

projects had been included in the council’s Advocacy Strategy, which was used as a basis for “advocating to other tiers of government to attract the funding for services and infrastructure our community needs”. Work has already begun on one of the projects on the list – earlier this year, the council said it was working with VicRoads on an upgrade of the Sneydes and Point Cook roads intersection, including the installation of traffic lights. VicRoads metro north-west transport and planning director David Teague said the organisation was working closely with the

Major Road Projects Authority and Wyndham council “on a number of projects which will transform Wyndham’s arterial road network”. He said VicRoads was considering options for an Ison Road overpass, as well as possible future upgrades to Point Cook Road. He said potential safety improvements for Sayers Road, between Morris and Palmers roads, were also being investigated. Roads and Road Safety Minister Luke Donnellan said the $1.8 billion Western Roads Upgrade would fix some of the region’s worst bottlenecks.

Big day for little tackers A giant giraffe and elephant sculpture, arts and entertainment will feature at Wyndham council’s annual Children’s Week Picnic. The free event, which is now in its 18th year, will be held on Sunday, October 28. Polyglot Theatre’s ‘Tangle’, a giant weaving play space event which allows children to create a public artwork using coloured elastic and two-metre high poles, will transform an empty space on the great lawn at Werribee Mansion into a colourful installation. There will also be food trucks, roving entertainers, the Mexican Music Man, a toy swap, a silent disco hosted by Wyndham’s Youth Services Team and a child and parent mobile photo studio. Tawanda and friends will run a drumming session and play African grooves, while young people who love sport can head to the Try Sports Zone to give AFL, cricket, tennis, lacrosse, soccer, softball or drill dancing a go.

The main stage will also feature the Scott Hone BMX Show, Fizzics Big Science Big Fun Show, Teeny Tiny Stevies, Shiamak Davar – Bollywood Performance and Trash Test Dummies. The Healthy and Active Stage will include performances from dance schools and fitness centres including Namaste Yogis, Danchelle School of Dance, Unite Dance Studio, DanceMax Studios, Millennium Dance Concepts and Gracie Barra Hoppers Crossing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. The Children’s Week Picnic is on Sunday, October 28 from 10am to 4pm, at the Werribee Mansion, K Road, Werribee South. The event will be a sugary-drink and alcohol-free event. Keyhole surgery first

Council wants to hear your opinion

By Alesha Capone The first keyhole spinal surgery procedure at St Vincent’s Private Hospital in Werribee was performed last week. Neurosurgeon and spinal surgeon Girish Nair, who also heads the neurosurgery unit at Western Health, performed the operation on Tarneit resident Andrew, last Tuesday. Andrew underwent a two-hour microscopic keyhole laminectomy surgery to help relieve pressure on nerves in his back. Andrew said his GP referred him to Mr Nair, the founder of state-wide neurosurgical practice Neuroaxis. While Neuroaxis conducts consultations in Werribee, before Andrew came along Mr Nair had never performed keyhole spinal surgery in the area. “I asked him to come to St Vincent’s because it’s nice and local,” Andrew said. “He said, ‘Yes’, and the rest is history.” Mr Nair said that previously patients from Wyndham who needed such operations had to travel to a hospital located in or near Melbourne. He said that within six to 12 months, he expected St Vincent’s would be able to conduct more complex spinal surgeries, such as disc removals. “For us, it’s very exciting that this has come here,” he said. “It’s long overdue for the area and it’s great that St Vincent’s have recognised the need in the area.”

Knock, knock, who’s there? It may just be a surveyor asking for your opinion on Wyndham City Council. In coming weeks, surveyors from Metropolis Research will be knocking on the doors of Wyndham residents, as part of the council’s community satisfaction survey. The council conducts the annual survey to find out which areas of its work residents are pleased with and what they think needs improving. Deputy mayor Walter Villagonzalo said Wyndham council hoped to get more than 1200 responses to the survey. He said the survey would include questions about the council’s customer experience and service delivery, performance, community safety, healthy living and travel. “Hearing this feedback from our residents is important, as it helps us understand what we’re doing well, where we can improve, and how to better plan to meet the needs of all residents,” Cr Villagonzalo said. The survey staff will be wearing identification cards with both the Metropolis Research and Wyndham City Council logos. Details: www.wyndham.vic.gov.au Alesha Capone

Avalon flies a flag for diversity By Charlene Macaulay Avalon Airport has added another string to its bow with the opening of a 40-hectare industrial precinct anchored by the Cotton On Group. The Avalon Airport Industrial Precinct is expected to create 750 on-site jobs and 1100 indirect jobs by 2026. Cotton On Group chief executive Peter Johnson said the business, which has moved its national distribution centre from Lara to the new $40 million state-of-the-art site, was proud to be the anchor tenant. He forecasts the new facility will have the capacity to process

300,000 products a day, as opposed to the 130,000 capability of its former headquarters. “This incredible 35,000-square-metre facility at Avalon will satisfy our customers’ demand for speed, delivering product to our customer faster than ever before,” he said. Avalon Airport chief executive Justin Giddings said the opening of the industrial precinct was a proud moment. “We began the process of business diversification several years ago via our hangars and we’re thrilled to have now completed our first bespoke build in our new industrial hub,” Mr Giddings said.

“The site provides great scope for industrial development with plenty of space for expansion.” The state government provided $1.5 million funding for essential on-site infrastructure and helped to broker the deal between Avalon and the Cotton On Group. Lara MP John Eren said the precinct would help the airport diversify its operations and secure its future as a freight and logistics hub. “With new carriers, international flights and now Cotton On’s re-location, the sky is the limit for the ever-expanding Avalon Airport,” he said.

Wyndham teen inspires This Tarneit teenager is among Wyndham’s best. Declan Parker, 19, was named the Wyndham Young Achiever of the Year for his dedicated service to the community. He was chosen from among 12 young people who received a Mayoral Youth Award in 2017. The university student is a CFA volunteer who has attended a number of fires and car accidents, earning himself the 2011 CFA Junior of the Year. Declan, who at 15 became a full-time carer for his mother when she was injured in a car accident, also volunteers for the Cancer Council, the Royal Children’s Hospital and Red Nose Day. Mayor Peter Maynard said Declan was one of the most inspiring people he’s ever met. “When you consider that he is only 19 years

old, it makes his achievements and dedication to making his community a better place even more impressive,” Cr Maynard said. “I don’t know where Declan finds the time or energy to give so much back to his community, but we are definitely lucky to have him.” To nominate a young Wyndham local for a Mayoral Youth Awards, go to bit.ly/2bCVRic Charlene Macaulay

Clare Moore Building Opens And tragically, suicide is still the leading cause of death for young people.

Recently, I was proud to open the new Clare Moore Building at the Werribee Mercy Hospital. The Clare Moore building will provide local people with the mental health services they need and deserve in our growing western suburbs.

That is why; in the 2018 /19 Budget, we provided a record $705 million for more mental health support, extra rehabilitation facilities and emergency crisis hubs. This is part of our multi-faceted approach for assisting our most vulnerable and disadvantaged members of the local community.

Lead cast members Elijah Beckitt and Shevaun Pope. (Damjan Janevski)

This was part of the previously allocated $34.7 million towards the expansion of Werribee Mercy’s mental health services.

All hands on deck Teenagers Elijah Beckitt and Shevaun Pope are the very model of modern musical performers. The young actors, who are both 19, will play the roles of Frederic and Mabel in the upcoming production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance at the Wyndham Culture Centre. Werribee-based Dynamic Performers Australia, a family-owned performing arts school, will stage the show on October 20-21. The cast has been hard at work rehearsing since July. Pope said she had enjoyed challenging herself in preparing for The Pirates of Penzance, her first classical role. “I’m so excited to perform in front of an audience and hear them laugh,” she said. Beckitt said he had been hoping to work

Those facing depression and anxiety must have reassurance from us all and know that mental illness is often temporary. And that treatment helps.

backstage, but his mother Cassandra Beckitt– the production’s vocal coach and co-costumier – asked him to audition for Frederic. The show is something of a family affair for Beckitt, whose eldest brother Alex is playing a pirate, while their father Joseph Beckitt is the musical director. Beckitt said he wanted to thank the show’s production team, including choreographer Carolyn Hasenkam and director and set-maker Michael Blazley. The show will be on 7.30pm Saturday and 2pm Sunday at the Wyndham Culture Centre. Tickets: $20. Details: www.dynamicperformers.com.au

It replaces Werribee Mercy’s former mental health inpatient facility with a new 54-bed service, so healthcare staff can treat more patients than ever, closer to family and friends.

Beyond this – it will take a collective effort from all Victorians to provide an environment where each of us can experience their best mental health, to live free from stigma and discrimination, and to be included in their community.

All of us know somebody who lives with mental illness. We see it in our partners, our colleagues, our parents and our children.

Cash pledge for families By Charlene Macaulay Early learning and kindergarten services in Wyndham are attracting big dollars and have formed the basis of a number of state and federal election promises. Last week, the sod was turned on the new $5.5 million Truganina East Integrated Facility Learning Centre which, once complete, will provide 231 four-year-old kinder places, maternal and child health support, playgroups and health workshops.

We’re ensuring children kids in the west get the best - Jenny Mikakos start in life

’’

The centre, which will be co-located with the Dohertys Creek P-9 College that is under construction, is jointly funded by Wyndham council ($3.1 million) and the state government ($2.4 million) and is slated for completion by January 2020. Early Childhood Education Minister Jenny Mikakos said the centre would allow families to access the services they need closer to home. “Integrated early childhood services make a big difference to children’s lives and we’re ensuring kids in the west get the best start in life,” she said. Wyndham council mayor Peter Maynard added: “Once complete, this project will provide local families in the growing suburb of Truganina with access to a range of family services”. Meanwhile, the federal opposition has committed to ongoing four-year-old kinder funding from the year 2020 if elected to government.

The incumbent federal government has committed to providing its share of kinder funding until the end of 2019. Lalor MP Joanne Ryan said Labor’s election promise was the biggest ever investment in early education for children. “Under our plan, over the forward estimates

in Victoria alone, from the year 2021 – 128,000 three year olds will be able to access 15 hours of subsidised care,” Ms Ryan said. This follows earlier election commitments from both state and federal Labor to deliver an extra year of subsidised kindergarten for three-year-olds.

Council takes up fire fight Wyndham council will write to more than 10,000 landowners to remind them to keep their properties fire safe. The council will remind the owners of vacant land that they are required to maintain grass and vegetation on their properties to a maximum height of 150 millimetres. Safer communities portfolio holder Kim McAliney said landowners were also required to remove all grass and vegetation along fence lines. “If you live on a rural property or own a vacant plot of land, October through to March is a vitally important time to be aware of your responsibilities as a landowner in Wyndham,” Cr McAliney said. “That’s why council is in the process of writing to property owners. We will also be starting to inspect some properties during summer, with follow-up inspections taking place mid-2019.” Cr McAliney said that if property owners did not comply with council requirements, they could be served with a notice containing the details of work that needed to be carried out to address risks. “If this initial notice is not adhered to, council can issue an infringement, prosecute or take action to maintain the property at the cost of the landowner,” she said. Werribee park pops up again By Charlene Macaulay Werribee’s pop-up park will return to Station Place in 2019. The park will re-open to the public on January 18 and will run over five weeks until February 24 following a successful debut this year. Wyndham economy, liveability and innovation director Peter McKinnon said residents and visitors could expect a similar layout and a range of entertainment options. “The program will include free

family-friendly live music, with a new line-up of headline artists crossing a range of genres,” Mr McKinnon said. “Last year, we were thrilled to be able to feature a number of local musicians from Wyndham as support acts and that will continue again this year.” Mr McKinnon said Street Food Sunday and free outdoor movies would return, while a revamped weekday program would include free workshops, classes, performances and after-school fun. Werribee’s 2018 pop-up park, which ran for

five weeks in January and February, attracted an extra 18,783 visitors to Werribee’s CBD. But a number of Station Place traders called for the park to be discontinued or relocated following this year’s debut, saying the experiment had been bad for business by closing 22 carparks fronting their stores.

Sarifa’s winning ways Meet Truganina’s award-winning mumpreneur. Sarifa Younes recently took out this year’s AusMumpreneur Award in the multicultural category for her work as founder and director of the Arndell Park Early Childhood Learning Centre in Truganina. Mrs Younes set up the business 15 years ago when she moved to Australia with her family and struggled to find a job or childcare for her eldest son. “The award means a lot to me because it gives significance to the work that has gone into everything I have achieved,” she said. “I want to motivate women in less fortunate circumstances to embrace their obstacles and to create better futures for themselves and their families.” Mrs Younes is also president of the International Academy of Marawi and director of the Training College of Australia,

where she trains early childhood educators. The psychologist and early learning expert has also sponsored about 100 orphans with her husband Hassan and later this year will release her first book, Love Your Obstacles. Mrs Younes said like most women, she struggles with achieving a family and life balance, but said working with her husband, who quit his job as an airspace engineer to help run the business, has been a great experience. “I think to have a very supportive husband is very important in a family, because without the support of a husband it would be difficult for every woman to realise their dream,” she said. Family Information Session - Tricky Teens

A clinical psychologist, Andrew has spent years helping parents understand and assist their tricky teens to safely navigate adolescence. He says that the key to understanding teenagers is to realise that their behaviour is caused by two things: the families’ lives; and the neurochemicals and hormones washing around in that massive soup bowl called their brains.

Mr McKinnon said feedback from nearly 350 traders and the public following this year’s pop-up park was “overwhelmingly positive”, with 93 per cent of businesses saying it helped build a positive perception of Werribee’s CBD and 100 per cent wanting to see the event return in some capacity. “The survey identified some areas that businesses would like to see improved … these included short-term parking within Station Place. “We’re looking forward to working with businesses to address those concerns.”

Lots of love in this brave family By Charlene Macaulay

The concern is that full approval for the drug is about five years away for Australia, so the family is planning to send the boys to Italy for treatment early next year while grandmother Sue lobbies for Ataluren to be made available in Australia. Every day, the boys’ parents and grandmother are faced with the harsh realities of the disease,

which is slowly eating away at their mobility and spirit. For Sam, who is mum to Jakob and Lukas, her day begins at 6am when she wakes up her sons to remove the leg braces they have worn all night and massages their legs for up to 30 minutes to relax their muscles. The rest of her day goes something like this:

It’s a fate no family should have to endure – three children from one family all struck with the same fatal genetic condition. That’s the reality facing Tarneit’s Tantaro family. Brothers Jakob and Lukas and their cousin, Anthony, were born with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), a hereditary condition that causes muscle wastage, breathing difficulties and heart problems. The degenerative disease means that by the time the boys are 12, they will lose their ability to walk. In their teens, they’ll lose their upper body function and will eventually become quadriplegics. Most DMD sufferers usually die from heart or respiratory failure in their early to mid-20s. There is no cure. Seven-year-old Jakob has started using a scooter for long distances and is suffering from a speech impediment. He takes steroids daily in a bid to manage his condition. Lukas, 5, has started on steroids in the past month. His movements remain normal for a child his age, but he is completely non-verbal and relies on a book that has symbols and words to help him communicate. His back is more curved than his brother’s, which could be an early sign of scoliosis. Anthony, 10, is slowing down and can no longer get off the floor on his own. He can’t do simple things such as putting on his own socks, and mostly relies on his motorised scooter to get around. He takes steroids and heart medication and has been seeing a psychologist as the effects of the condition bring him down. Both Anthony and Jakob are taking part in a placebo trial for the drug Ataluren, which helps to slow down the effects of the disease.

10am: Sam works with Lukas in a bid to lift his verbal skills. 11am: Lukas is taken to a number of appointments on any given day, including a speech pathologist, occupational therapy, hydrotherapy, hospital visits and appointments with early intervention workers. Sometimes Jakob is taken out of school for appointments, too. Lunch: Help feed Lukas lunch. 1pm: More stretches for Lukas. 3pm: Pick up Jakob from school. 6pm: Help both boys eat dinner. 7pm: Stretches for both boys. Then shower and dress both for bed; and put leg braces on both boys to wear throughout the night. It’s a routine that gets more onerous as the boys get older and their condition deteriorates. Both Sam and her sister, Maree, who is mum to Anthony, have had to stop working to become full-time carers for their children. “They go to the Royal Children’s Hospital to see the neurologist, the physio,” Sam said. “They go to speech therapy, occupational therapy – there’s a lot of appointments.” The family has set up a trust account – the Cousins Crusade Appeal – and is raising money to fund the overseas treatments and for things the National Disability Insurance Scheme doesn’t cover, such as accessible vehicles, scooters, wheelchairs and various therapies. Sue is building a specially-equipped respite home in Tarneit for her grandsons. It should be ready in the next six to nine months. Two members from the Point Cook Rotary Club have offered to do her yard once the house is complete. “The house at the moment is for respite care, and the only time Sam will move in is if she needs to move in,” Sue said. “Same with Maree. It’s there for when they need a break.”

Diamond celebrations A Wyndham Vale husband and wife will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary next week. Barry and Merlie Clayton were married at St Monica’s Catholic Church in Footscray on October 25, 1958. The couple went on to have four children, Suzanne, Debby, John and Brett (now deceased), seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Mr and Mrs Clayton’s daughter Debby Barnes said her mother and father enjoyed a lunch with their family to celebrate their anniversary last week, before they set off on a cruise. She said one of the highlights of the day for her parents was a congratulatory card from Queen Elizabeth. “Another highlight was having their eldest great-grandson sing a couple of songs, this was very moving and filled with love and emotion,” Ms Barnes said. “They said they have seen many changes over the 60 years, however they feel their greatest achievement is their beautiful family. “Marriage is not about the kind of house you live in or the car you drive, family is the most precious gift of all.” Ms Barnes said her parents also said the keys to a lasting marriage were respect, communication and to love unconditionally. She said as four generations of their family celebrated her mother and father’s special milestone, their final message was “to never give up on each other and to never give up on your dreams”.

As councillors, we spend a lot of time talking about needing ‘infrastructure’ to support our growing community. But infrastructure isn’t just roads and railways – it’s also parks, play spaces and sporting pavilions. We may not realise it, but we get a tiny bit happier and healthier every time we use these pieces of infrastructure. They entice us out of our homes and into our community – and the value of this cannot be overestimated. Earlier this year, we applied for funding for this much-needed community infrastructure. And now we can begin making it happen, thanks to $3.8million from the Victorian Government’s Growing Suburbs Fund. These funds mean we can bring six projects to life, including redeveloping sites like The Grange Community Centre in Hoppers Crossing and Friars Place Park in Point Cook. It also means we’ll finally be able to transform the former Glen Devon school site in Werribee into a welcoming environment for local families. I would like to acknowledge the efforts of past councillors as well as Cr Mia Shaw, who strongly advocated to ensure we get this important project moving. This site has sat derelict for years, but soon trees, lawns, pathways and shelters will breathe new life into the neighbourhood. See you out there. Regards, Peter Maynard

Work begins on Windermere A soil-turning ceremony has marked the beginning of civil works at the Windermere estate in Mambourin. Property developer Country Garden Australia hosted the event on Thursday at its Greens Road site, where 4700 houses will be built across 363 hectares. The area will become home to an estimated 14,800 residents. Country Garden Australia chief executive Dr Guotao Hu joined representatives from construction partner BMD Urban, other contractors and consultants for the ceremony. Dr Hu said Country Garden Australia would “be here on the ground for many years to come”.

More than 3000 people have registered their interest in Windermere since April, with more than 260 lots sold to date. Windermere will include three public schools and one private school, a community centre, indoor recreation centre, childcare facility and sporting ovals for AFL and cricket, plus netball courts. “Windermere is designed for people seeking an active and engaged lifestyle, It will also feature over three kilometres of walking paths set amongst 50 hectares of open space, including a wetlands, parklands, sports areas and reserves,” Dr Hu said. Country Garden Australia will host a family

fun day on Saturday. Attendees can enjoy a vegie patch workshop, science show, magician, balloon artist, face-painter, henna tattooist, taco truck, Indian food truck and a donut, cronut and cruffin station. “As a community that is designed for families, we wanted to recognise and celebrate the importance of the family in the make-up of the future Windermere estate,” said Dr Hu. The family fun day will be held from 1-4pm on Saturday at the Windermere sales gallery, 275 Greens Road, Mambourin. On track in Werribee The stars of this year’s Melbourne Cup and other Spring Racing Carnival meetings are working out in Werribee – and you’re invited. Werribee Racing Club general manager Ashley Baker is calling on locals to head down to Werribee Racecourse to watch horses staying in Werribee stables undertake their morning trackwork. Among the racers calling Werribee home are the Charlie Appleby-trained Cross Counter, who is currently second-favourite for the Melbourne Cup; The Cliffsohmoher, who is trained by Aidan O’Brien and ran well over the weekend at Caulfield; Herbert Power Stakes winner Yucatan; and Group 1 Caulfield Stakes winner Benbatl and runner-up Blair House. “Both Benbatl and Blair House may go to the Cox Plate to take on Winx, but that’s yet to be confirmed,” Mr Baker said.

Mr Baker said a new shipment of eight horses for the Melbourne Cup arrived at the weekend, including the Hughie Morrison-trained Marmelo and Joseph O’Brien’s Latrobe, who will be making his Melbourne Cup debut. Last year, the club’s Vintage Crop Stables housed the Melbourne Cup’s first three horses – winner Rekindling, second-placed Johannes Vermeer and third-placed Max Dynamite. Mr Baker said horses would be on the track from 7am to 10am every day, with the club providing a free bacon-and-egg roll breakfast for race fans between 7.30-9am. Cut up over forest plan Reclassifying Wombat State Forest to become a national park would be an “ecological disaster”, according to forest supporters. The Victorian Environment Assessment Council (VEAC) has been ordered by the state government to investigate the future use and classifications of Wombat, Wellsford, Mount Cole and Pyrenees Ranges state forests. A VEAC draft report’s recommendations include changing the status of the Wombat State Forest by establishing the Wombat-Lerderderg National Park – a move that could restrict public access. The report is open for public comment until December 10. But regular forest user Loris Duclos, and recipient of the commonwealth’s centenary medal for “outstanding service to the environment, particularly the Wombat State Forest”, has slammed the recommendation and described it as an “ecological disaster”. “Our forest went through two decades of unsustainable industrial logging, which our community fought hard against to stop from happening,” Ms Duclos said. “In the 1990s, the fight was against the extreme right who wanted to chop everything. The fight has now become against the extreme left who want to keep people out of large areas of the forest.” After the win in the 1990s to ban clear-felling, Ms Duclos said new tree growth had not been managed properly, creating a “suppressed” forest, where trees are “skinny and stumped”. She said any plans to close off the forest to the public would only exacerbate the fire risk and stymie efforts to restore the forest to its full potential. “Most people from Melbourne think national parks are a good thing,” Ms Duclos said.

STEVE SMITHAM AND LORIS DUCLOS

“But this isn’t a natural, self-sustaining system – it’s a highly damaged system and now we have the extreme left who are going for the total lock-up without putting the environment first.” Bacchus Marsh retiree Steve Smitham has camped at the forest for the past 47 years. He said changing the Wombat State Forest’s status will restrict his ability to enjoy the outdoors.

“If they allow for camping, it’ll be in designated picnic spots,” Mr Smitham says. “But people go up there to enjoy the solitude and isolation … They don’t want to be coralled into a caravan park situation.” He said there has been a “groundswell” of support against classifying the Wombat State Forest into a national park and is urging the Environment Minister Lily D’Ambrosio to

heed community concerns. “It will be so disappointing to lose that area that’s become so sacred to us,” Mr Smitham said. “There’s nowhere else we could consider to go nearby.” The state government was contacted for comment. Happy kids in a snap A specialised sports program for children on the autism spectrum is helping them transition to mainstream sports teams. The Sporting Network of Autistic People and Parents (SNAPP) is a not-for-profit group that partners with mainstream sports groups and runs training sessions and games for kids with autism. The sessions are non-competitive and parent coached. Parents Allison and Kris Gately set up the SNAPP program when they realised starting off with mainstream sports clubs wasn’t working for their son, Bruin, who is on the spectrum. Ms Gately said the SNAPP program was a “bridging club” for kids. “Our kids have to deal with mainstream

school, with mainstream life, and sometimes they need that extra support,” she said. “Sports is extremely beneficial for children living on the spectrum. It has rules, it is predictable and non-verbal social interaction with children they would not otherwise have had the courage or reason to interact with.” SNAPP is partnering Wyndham Vale Soccer Club and Williamstown Congs Cricket Club for term four. SNAPP will host an open day on Saturday, October 20, from 10am-12.30pm at the Williamstown Congs Cricket Club, JT Gray Reserve, Kororoit Creek Road, Williamstown. MY WYNDHAM David “Paddy” McDiarmid is the Werribee RSL sub-branch vice-president and appeals officer. He chats with Alesha Capone.

quite a few. I have the pleasure of visiting Mr Eric Johnston (Mr Johnston is a former World War II prisoner of war who lives in Manor Lakes). Organising fundraising sausage sizzles at Bunnings is another thing I do. What do you like about your role in the Werribee RSL? Raising the money to assist RSL personnel and looking after the older people is what I enjoy most. The Victorian RSL is an organisation that, with all the money we raise, goes to welfare. We’re here to help people and that is our main aim, to help who we can. With our welfare work, for example, what happens is that when we have a person – such as a war widow – who cannot mow the grass after her husband has died, we send people to mow the grass and look after her garden. Ron will also take people to medical appointments on the bus. Ron sometimes operates that bus seven days a week. He takes the elderly people on trips, too.

(Damjan Janevski)

Why did you join the RSL in the first place?

When did you join the RSL? I first joined the RSL in 1979, in Alphington, and I joined the Werribee RSL 16 years ago, after I moved into Werribee. In less than two years, I joined the committee and then after some time, I stood for vice-president and have now been in the role for nine years – and I’ve

been the appeals officer for longer. But I’ll never catch up with our president Daryl Ryan – he has been here for around 30 years. What are your main duties in the Werribee RSL? As the appeals officer, I help to organise the

selling of Anzac tokens and poppies. Every year we distribute these to local businesses, organisations and schools. The drop-off to schools is very ably done by our welfare bus drivers Ron and Daryl. I also look after the older people. I have got some ladies who go around to the nursing homes to visit RSL members who live there, and I also go and visit

I was a member of both the British and Australian armed forces. I was in the army for a fair amount of years. I enjoyed the sport and the comradeship. That’s why I joined the RSL, where you’ve still got the comradeship. All the RSLs work together hand in hand to help any other sub-branch in trouble. As a resident of Werribee South, what do you like about the area? I don’t like living blocked in, but in Werribee South I’ve got open space. The people there, especially the farmers, are very friendly.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir finds no problems at Houston’s Keilor Park, home of the Star Weekly office, is on the edge of a sprawling area of inter-connected industrial estates hugging Melbourne Airport. Around here, there appears to be a tradies-style cafe on almost every block. Good food? Way more sparse. That is why the opening of a bona fide barbecue joint just around the corner from our office – a two-minute walk, no need to get in the car – seemed so surreal. Still does. Houston’s Barbecue is located in the premises of Fury and Son Brewing Company. And it’s open only on Fridays. Initial visits left very mixed impressions. For example, brisket burgers and beef hot dogs that were OK – but not really nailing it. I can sympathise. This is a new operation – a very unique one, operating in an unusual (to say the least) location. Some fine-tuning, tweaking and settling-in time has definitely been in order. I returned a couple of weeks ago – and was mightily impressed. The menu has been constantly revised. But the introduction of substantial – and, yes, pricier – platters has seen Houston’s Barbecue reach new heights. A platter of brisket and smoked sausage was superb. Two hunka-chunka slices of wonderful spicy-crusted brisket. An excellent cheesy,

30 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY \ OCTOBER 17, 2018

HOUSTON’S BARBECUE Address: 46 Concorde Drive, Keilor Park Phone: 0434 434 303 greasy smoked sausage. Just the right amount of good coleslaw and pickles. And – oh, yes – none of that brioche nonsense; instead, two slices of perfect white, sliced bread in true barbecue joint fashion. Entirely delicious – and worth every cent of the $18 I paid. Returning a week later, I have an even better time. For CTS purposes, I am happy to splash out in a way I hope doesn’t become too much of a weekly habit! The beef short rib conglomeration costs $25 and it’s a doozy. The chips are just OK. Slaw and pickles as previously enjoyed. And I would’ve appreciated that white, sliced bread again. But forget all that – what about the meat? My single, hefty rib is amazingly good. Less fatty than many barbecue beef ribs I have eaten, it’s meat is tender, plentiful and heavenly. The spicy crust might be too salty for some tastes, but I love that as well. As for doubts about the commercial viability of the singular location and one-day-a-week opening hours, I couldn’t be happier to observe that Houston’s Barbecue is a hit. In industrial Keilor Park. How about that?

SENIORSMONTH

A STAR WEEKLY FEATURE

The Victorian Seniors Festival, running during October, gives older people the chance to get out and take part in a series of events that will finish at the end of the month. It’s already proved a big hit so make the most of programs still on.

The popular festival is a great reason to get out the glad-rags or active wear, join friends and neighbours and discover anew why getting older is something to be celebrated. Thursday, October 18: • Remember When … sing old-time songs followed by a light lunch – Werribee • The One Man Party with Arnie Griffs – hits from a variety of artists – Wyndham Vale • Multicultural Try Bowls, lunch and concert – Werribee Monday, October 22: Indian cooking session, demonstration and sharing – Tarneit Tuesday, October 23: • Seniors walk in historic Werribee Park • Walk in Wyndham Park and brunch – Werribee Until Saturday, October 27: History lecture: “The Hume & Hovell expedition 0f 1824/25 terminated at the Werribee River.” Free transport. When you’re not lunching with friends at an event, the Commercial Hotel in Watton Street, Werribee, is offering seniors 50 per cent off the price of main meals until the end of October. Have your Seniors Card handy and make it a date. During the same period, but independent of the festival, Wyndham council offers a smorgasbord of regular and special events, such as the impressive range of sessions at Wyndham libraries. They include Craft & Conversation, Yak & Yarn, chess for all ages, writing club and genealogy tours.

Oozing sophistication, this period-style residence by Keogh Homes has everything and more a large family could want. Four living zones wrap around a central staircase which leads to a family room with balcony access. Ranged around this are six fitted bedrooms, the main bathroom with spa. The main bedroom, with balcony access, has twin walk-in robes and large en suite with spa. Another bathroom neighbours the downstairs laundry, and there’s a study with external entry. The kitchen, with butler’s pantry, has a stone-topped return island bench, dual-drawer dishwasher and designer 900mm cooker. A secure courtyard with cubby house is to one side of the living hub and on the other is a covered deck with access to the pool. The double garage has a gym area. The property is opposite parkland, waterway and walking trails.

In prestigious River Sanctuary estate, a minute’s stroll from Werribee River and 10 from Watton Street, this distinctive house is loaded with contemporary appeal. The three fitted bedrooms are upstairs, the main with walk-in robe and dual-basin en suite. The main bathroom and toilet are separate. There’s also a downstairs study. Three expansive living zones – one a carpeted lounge room under an angled ceiling and with fireplace – surround the kitchen. This has an island bench, loads of storage, glass splashback and 900mm cooker. Plantation, roman and timber blinds dress tall windows and light streams into living spaces. French doors open to an expansive covered deck and there’s a fire pit area and a large wedge of lawn for kids and pets. A double garage with internal access and side gates for parking van or trailer are included.

Casement plantation shutters are in bedrooms, adding much style. The lavish main bathroom has dual basins and a large shower. A carpeted theatre room couples with an expansive tiled living hub, where the designer kitchen has abundant streamlined storage, Caesarstone benches, dual Blanco wall ovens and 900mm gas cooktop beneath a column rangehood. A covered merbau deck looks out to a water feature, while the immaculate backyard has a wedge of lawn and feature plantings. Included are zoned ducted heating, refrigerated cooling, 2.7-metre ceilings, intercom/video surveillance system and drive-through extended double garage. Parks are within a stroll.

Beautifully presented, the house has three grey-carpeted fitted bedrooms, the main with walk-in robe and en suite. The main bathroom and toilet are separate, while the laundry has a walk-in closet. A carpeted lounge room, with plantation shutters, is separate to the tiled living hub. The kitchen, with dual-toned cabinetry, has a walk-in pantry, an island bench able to seat four and all the mod-cons. Ducted heating, evaporative cooling and a double garage with internal access are included. HOPPERS CROSSING 43 Willmott Drive, 3029 Max Brown Real Estate: 1300 629 276

Price: $545,000 – $595,000

Built to last in the late ’70s, this beautifully maintained house, within a three-minute walk of Waringa Park School, Waringa Crescent Reserve and Woodville Park shopping centre, is a family winner. The ’70s mission brown has given way to light neutrals with soft-green accents and grey carpets and the main bathroom has been completely revamped. Gardens, front and back, are pretty and neat as a pin, adding considerably to the overall appeal. Soft-grey floor tiles are in the short entryway, to the left of which are double doors to a carpeted lounge room. This has

Auction: October 21 at noon

a mirrored wall bouncing around light, as well as a built-in timber bar – handy when entertaining. Windows are dressed in soft-green drapes and lace, as they are in other rooms. An archway from here ushers in the kitchen and meals zone, the latter with a wall of timber and a slider to a great outdoor room. This has a ceiling fan and heavy bistro blinds which, when raised, allow a seamless flow to the garden. External awnings shading the room are a handy addition, with the space also accessible from the lounge room.

The kitchen, with appealing soft-green cabinetry, has a servery bench, corner pantry, underbench oven and gas cooktop. A garden bay window behind the sink is a nice design touch. The next-door laundry has cupboards and timber benches. A long carpeted hallway from the kitchen leads to the four fitted bedrooms with ceiling fans, as well as the smart new bathroom with a glass-topped 2pac vanity and contemporary tapware; the toilet is separate. The main bedroom, at hall’s end, has a dressing room with mirrored robes and an

en suite with a modern vanity. Ducted heating and seven security cameras are part of the deal. The backyard has quality synthetic turf and islands of pretty cottage-style gardens. A secure dog run, garden shed and a 6000-litre water tank are out here as well. The block of about 575 square metres has a drive-through double garage with mechanic’s pit. An area for parking a caravan is behind the garage and side gates farther along allow backyard entry. Carole Levy 35 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY \ OCTOBER 17, 2018

SPORT New coach finds inspiration in The Recruit I’ve been super lucky to play in the best country league in Victoria and now it’s time for some new challenges.” While Wyndhamvale has had a tough few years, with just five wins over the past three seasons, Moreland said the gap back to division one competitiveness wasn’t as big as it seemed. “If we get the right guys around this young list I think we can have a really good year in division two,” he said. “If you look at some of the results this year, they lost to Altona by just 20 points, some other close losses, so I don’t think they’re that far off. “We’ll learn as the year goes on, and I’m keen to play as many young kids as I can. Whether the rebuild happens in one year, two years or three years, I think once guys get confidence in the game plan and backing in their skills every week we’ll get there.” Fans of Foxtel TV show The Recruit may

remember Moreland from season one, where he progressed to the final three competitors after months of training with AFL great Michael Voss. He said the lessons learned from that experience had formed a key part of his coaching style and the message he would be telling his new Falcons players. “There were a few things I learnt from Vossy, just about maintaining certain things about your game and doing the one per centers,” Moreland said. “Everyone wants to learn how to win, but you can’t just rock up one day and win, you’ve got to do the work and do all the one per centers all the way through. “So there’s a bit of knowing why we do these things and what we’re trying to get out of it. It’s exciting to share that stuff with this group.” Ewen McRae

Cat century the clincher By Ewen McRae A Cameron Nicol century delivered the win to Hoppers Crossing in the Victorian Sub District Cricket Association south-west first XI season opener against Taylors Lakes at the weekend. After Taylors Lakes fought back from a slow start last week to set a target of 239, the Cats seemed to have all the answers on day two as the top order wiped out much of the deficit before losing a wicket and batting through the day to finish on 6-296 from their 80 overs. Nicol opened with gun recruit Jack Rhodes and together the pair frustrated the Lions bowlers with a well-constructed opening stand, taking full toll of anything loose and a lightning outfield. Rhodes was the first to go, for 39, when Nipun Sumanasinghe trapped him in front, but the 99-run partnership had Hoppers Crossing in the box seat. Sumanasinghe picked up a second wicket to breathe life into the Lions’ day, but when Trent Said joined Nicol at the crease the match began to slip away. The pair moved to 180 before Said (36) departed, but Manny Singh got Nicol to his century soon afterwards as the visitors closed in on the win. Nicol was eventually bowled for 103 by debutant Dilshan Kanchana (1-69) with victory in sight, but the Cats reached the target soon after. Hoppers Crossing batted out the day, with Luke Goegan (40 not out) looking impressive. Sumanasinghe was the clear standout with the ball for the Lions, finishing with 3-86 off 22 overs, while Vishesh Bansal (2-46) was good in his first game for the club. Elsewhere, Werribee could not prevent Caulfield getting a win, but was able to improve with the bat on the second day to avoid an outright loss. After posting just 96 on day one, and with Caulfield already 2-54 at stumps, Werribee knew it needed quick wickets if it was to be any chance of scoring an upset result. While it was able to snare the early wicket of Johnathon Aikins, Werribee couldn’t get another breakthrough until Caulfield was building its lead. The hosts got their total to 6-202 before declaring, with James Freeman, Michael Kelly and Bradley Apps grabbing two wickets apiece. In reply, Werribee was 3-44 and a chance of conceding the full points before a crucial 52 from captain Tim O’Brien steered it out of trouble. Werribee finished on 6-126 at the close of play.

IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ Interesting

start to the season for many of the local cricket clubs. In the subbies, Hoppers Crossing made a very good start, easily chasing down 238 to knock over Taylors Lakes. The star of the day was Cameron Nicol, scoring his maiden first X1 century as the Cats amassed 6 for 296. They head to Melton full of confidence and will need every bit of it. Werribee crashed rather than cruised against Caulfield with a meagre first innings total of 96 and the brittleness extended to the seconds, who were 6 for 20 before falling short in their run chase. Patrick O’Malley starred for Williamstown in an impressive victory over Yarraville while Altona lost to Elsternwick.

■I

could not think of a better match than Adam Contessa and the Sunshine Kangaroos. There is a buzz around Kinder Smith Reserve and rightly so as they have landed a good one. They needed to as Barney Hallinan left big shoes to fill. Adam has great credentials as a coach but more important is what he brings to the club as a successful person. He has plenty of football and cricket flags to boast of but he won’t because that is not what he is about. Sunshine went within a kick in 2017 of the ultimate and dropped out of calculations in 2018, but I expect the Kangaroos will bounce back in a big way in 2019.

■ The

coaching ranks of the VFL in the west are certainly impressive with the announcement of Daniel Giansiracusa as the new Footscray VFL coach, joining Mark Williams (Werribee), Andy Collins (Williamstown) and Gary Ayres (Port Melbourne). That is a select club where you need a minimum of 200 AFL games to be a part of it. Add numerous premierships as both player and coach, best and fairest awards and other achievements like Norm Smith medals and you have an amazing knowledge and experience base for young players to be developed.

■ All

sporting clubs face challenges on and off the field and it is the people who put their heart and soul into it who invariably bear the brunt of the workload. Werribee Centrals is heading into its 50 anniversary year and like all clubs is always looking for new faces – and not so new – to help guide the club into the future. Centrals is holding a come and try session for female players 12 and up next Monday from 6pm at Galvin Park. Kevin Hillier

New Wyndhamvale coach Chris Moreland is confident of rebuilding the newly relegated club back into a division one force in the coming years. Moreland, who has signed on at the Falcons for the next two seasons, has spent the past six seasons playing for Geelong West Giants in the Geelong Football League. Prior to the Giants, he was at Bell Post Hill Football Club, where he was a premiership captain, winning three flags. He said the challenge of rebuilding Wyndhamvale and taking on a senior coaching position was his main motivation for a move away from the Geelong football scene. “I think after a while at Geelong West it was time for them to have someone new, and Wyndhamvale felt like a really good fit for me with a fresh start and a heap of kids there. I’m really excited by that,” Moreland said. “It wasn’t easy to leave, and a few people were upset, but

Werribee star back in the AFL as Gold Coast beckons Werribee defender Sam Collins is set to restart his AFL career on the Gold Coast, with the Suns poised to sign the mature-age VFL prospect. Collins, 24, enjoyed a stellar year with Werribee after being delisted by Fremantle after 14 games at the end of 2017. The Suns are expected to make him their final signing under special dispensation rules afforded to them and Carlton. It follows the signings last week of fellow Werribee player Josh Corbett and SANFL key position player Chris Burgess. Collins starred in defence for Werribee this year, establishing himself as one of the best key defenders in the league and the most prolific mark in the competition. He took out the Werribee best and fairest and also finished third in the league’s JJ Liston Trophy. Speaking to the AFL’s trade radio, Collins said he hoped he could carve out a regular spot

in the Suns’ best team, likening himself to triple All-Australian Jeremy McGovern in the way he operates down back. “I like to try and roll off (my opponent) and mark the ball,” the 194-centimetre defender said. “The obvious one is Jeremy McGovern – he does it so well from the Eagles. “That’s probably the player I am – not too flashy, but just a competitor who likes to mark the ball.” Collins has been on the Suns’ radar for some time, with head coach Stuart Dew among staff and recruiters watching his games throughout 2018. The imminent signing follows that of Corbett last week. The young forward booted 22 goals and averaged 7.6 goals a game in his nine games for Werribee this season, earning the VFL most promising young player medal.

Corbett told the Suns’ website he was excited to be starting his AFL journey. “Obviously, it’s a childhood dream for every young boy and I’m just absolutely stoked and so grateful to the Gold Coast Suns for giving me the opportunity,” Corbett said. “I know there’s going to be a lot of hard work involved, but I’m confident with my ability as a footballer and in my communication. “I enjoy working hard and working towards a common goal and I think that seems to be a common theme throughout the Gold Coast staff and players. “I can’t wait to get up there and meet more of the boys and get into it all.” Ewen McRae Sam Collins is on his way to join the Gold Coast Suns. Tarneit and Tarneit Central turned on a run fest in Western Suburbs Churches & Community Cricket Association’s AE Lowe Shield A-grade synthetic. Batting first in a thriller, Tarneit Central posted 4-261 from its 35 overs on the back of an unbeaten 121 from Vikrant Makkar. United Tarneit was up for the challenge. Openers Indika Massalage (68) and Charith Gunathilaka (104 not out) were the backbone of the chase as they reached the target with five balls to spare.

Baseball

Werribee’s unbeaten start to the division 2 summer baseball season continued at the weekend, with the Giants proving far too strong for Mulgrave. Once again showing off its hitting potential, Werribee ran in 10 runners while also limiting the damage on the defensive end to walk away with a 10-6 victory. With 24 runs from the first three rounds, the Giants are one of the most potent attacking teams in the league and will go into this week’s match-up with bottom-placed Bonbeach full of confidence.

Bowls

Bellbridge squares ledger By Ewen McRae Bellbridge is on the board for the 2018-19 season, proving far too strong for Melton South in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association Russell Pollock Shield division 5. After an even performance with both bat and ball, Bellbridge captain Adam Masterson said it was good to get their first win after slipping up in the opening round. “We batted really well to start off with, got what we thought was a pretty defendable score, and then executed really well with the ball so we’re pretty happy overall,” Masterson said. “We’re 1-1 now so it’s good to square the ledger. “We’ve been trying to drum into the guys that it’s a team game and we all have to chip in, so we’re happy if everyone can get a start that puts us in a good starting place … if someone can go on and get a big score that’s a bonus.” 64 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY \ OCTOBER 17, 2018

While no Bellbridge player scored more than 24, five players made scores in the 20s to steadily build the total and ensure that wickets didn’t fall in clusters early in the day. Blake Mensch (22), Patrick Lee (22), Matthew Edsall (24), Leigh Medhurst (20 not out) and Masterson (21) were the backbone of the innings as Bellbridge finished its 40 overs with 8-176. In reply, Melton South never really got going, as Andrew Wilks (3-19) did the damage with the new ball, and Lee (3-30) cleaned up the lower order to topple the Royals for 140. All five Bellbridge bowlers grabbed a wicket in a good sign for the season. Masterson said he had confidence in his bowlers once they had the score on the board. “We knew it was a good score, but the outfield was quick so we still had to do the job with the ball,” he said. “So long as they were tight early we thought

we’d be good enough and give ourselves the best chance of winning. All the bowlers got tidy figures which is very pleasing.” With the first win out of the way, Masterson said he was hopeful of a successful year following the addition of some key recruits over the winter. “It should be a really even comp,” Masterson said. “Anyone can beat anyone on their day, so you can’t look too far ahead of yourself but we think we’ll have a pretty competitive season. “We did a bit of recruiting to help us out this year, we’ve got a bloke from England [Jonathan Newis] to come over and help us out and he’s slotted in well, and we also got Faraz Mahmood from Wyndhamvale Suns, who wanted to play a bit of turf, which is good for us.” Bellbridge will take on Flemington this weekend in the first two-day match of the season.

Werribee grabbed a strong win over Flemington-Kensington in division 1 pennant bowls on Saturday, winning three rinks to one. Winning skips Peter Yassar, Ian Milliage, and Rob Smith bowled for convincing wins. Rob Patton led all day before going down in the last end of the day. Werribee won 95 (16)-66 (2), and will travel to play Lalor this weekend. In division 2 action, Hoppers Crossing split the rinks against Deer Park’s twos but was unable to come away with the win. Hoppers Crossing started slowly to be trailing by 10 shots after just 20 ends. But after 40 ends, it had claimed the lead in two rinks. While it held the lead in those two rinks, Deer Park claimed big wins in the other two as it won 89 (14)-61 (4). Hoppers Crossing will host Melton this weekend.

AT A GLANCE MODEL RANGE

The Mini began life as a tiny no-nonsense very practical car that could carry four people with less squeezing than might have been expected and became a legend. BMW Mini was launched in 2001 after the British maker got into so much financial strife that the German company moved in to sort out the mess. Thankfully, the guys and gals at BMW understood that though Mini had remained a sensible car, it had also become the king of the customisers. Styling changes on the latest Mini are minimal. Instead of making exterior changes, technology and infotainment have received major upgrades based on those introduced in recent years on BMW’s own models. A new palette of colours and trims have been introduced.

New design LED lights are standard on the Cooper S – the model we test – and on John Cooper Works. The LEDs are integrated into the main headlight fitting and increase both low and high-beam range. An optional adaptive LED system using a matrix high-beam function that adapts to the road ahead was on our test car and certainly made night driving safer and simpler.

Infotainment

The updated Mini sees the introduction of Mini Connected, which uses a touchscreen interface and the 4G network. Included are Real-Time Traffic Information as well as Remote Services, Connected Services, Tele Services and a Concierge function. Connected Services provides weather information, key

Powertrains

The Cooper S has a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol unit that produces 141 kW of power and 280 Nm of torque. Transmission options are a six-speed manual gearbox or a sports-tuned seven-speed dual-clutch automatic with paddle shifters. The JCW’s dual-clutch includes launch control to minimise standing-start times.

Driving

Steering and handling let you use a combination of the throttle and steering wheel that’s all-but intuitive. The brakes hauled off speed with ease and never showed the slightest sign of fade. Engine lag is minimal and once it’s passed there’s strong torque that makes light work of hills. always in the correct gear, though habit had us probably using the paddle shifters more than required. Having said that, there’s no way I would buy a Mini of any sort with an automatic. Ride comfort is generally good, but some hard bumps and dips did find their way into the interior. Fuel consumption isn’t something that’s generally spoken about when testing a performance car, but efficient engines are often surprisingly economical. Which was the case in the Mini Cooper S around town. When fanging in the country, it sat in the nine to twelve litres per hundred kilometres range. On motorways, that dropped to below the sevens.
