BEST OF All-Centex PREPS BANQUET

A NIGHT TO REMEMBER FOR ALL BY CHRIS BILS American-Statesman Correspondent

Among the more than 400 high school athletes celebrated Monday at the inaugural Best of All-Centex Preps awards banquet, there was at least one ready to turn pro. Several more couldn’t make the event because they were already enrolled in college out of state, and others will begin the next stage of their careers this fall. Guest speaker Deshaun Watson saw a little of himself as he looked out at Palmer Events Center, recalling his days roaming the halls of Gainesville High School in Georgia. “It created a routine for myself, it made me a competitive person, a great teammate, a great leader,” Watson said of his prep career in football, basketball, baseball and track and field. “It also introduced me to new people across the world, people I never thought I’d never be in a room with.” Wherever they go from here, the athletes in the room will have their names forever associated with Central Texas. For male athlete of the year Brett Baty, that meant hopping on a plane later this week to sign a professional contract with the New York Mets, who selected him in the first round of the MLB Draft. “I’m super excited to represent this area,”

A large ice sculpture greeted athletes and their families at the entrance to the Best of All-Centex Preps awards banquet on Monday at the Palmer Events Center. The event honored high school athletes in all sports across Central Texas.

he said. “It’s been my home for the last 19 years, so I’m just glad I represented this area well and can’t wait to get up there and get started.” Standouts from 20 different sports were celebrated, with major awards handed

out to the male and female players of the year, team of the year and coach of the year. Presentations for the Inspiration Award, received by the girls basketball team from the Texas School for the Deaf, and the Courage Award, earned by Glenn

football player Ayrton Hignojos, were especially moving. Watson took photos with each recipient and participated in a Q and A with American-Statesman sports columnists Cedric Golden and Kirk Bohls during which the 23-year-old offered some sage advice. “There’s going to be new challenges,” he said. “It doesn’t get any easier from here. There’s going to be times where you’re just another fish in the pond. Keep doing what got you here.” On Monday, the lights shined bright on the area’s best, with an ice sculpture greeting families as they entered and their faces showing on a giant video board. Presented by title sponsors Thomas J. Henry Law and Sames Auto, it was an event unlike any the Statesman had held before. Another sponsor, new Major League Soccer franchise Austin FC, offered a $2,000 scholarship for both a girls and boys soccer player, with team president Andy Loughnane making the announcement during the ceremony. Whether they’re headed for a World Series title, the Olympics, or simply a life enriched by their high school accomplishments, the best of All-Centex left with a memory well-earned.

MANOR HIGH SCHOOL TEAM OF THE YEAR BOYS BASKETBALL Why TheY Won

This season was great. They’ve been putting in a lot of hard work and for them to see that does pay off, what that teaches them in life is priceless. No matter how hard it is if you continue to work and work it’s going to pay off. Manor High School’s

boys basketball accept

ed the Team of the Yea

r award at the banq

— Coach Anthony Swain uet.

There was no reason to believe the boys basketball team at Manor High School would have success this year. This was a team that went 13-19 in 2018 and didn’t make the playoffs. Coach Anthony Swain, a 2005 Manor graduate, had other ideas. You have to admire a coach who drives the team bus — to every game. The Mustangs surprised everyone this season, reaching the UIL State Tournament in San Antonio. It was the first time Manor had been to the state tournament in any team sport in school history. Among the top players in Central Texas was Jamal Shead, a transfer from Connally High School who averaged 19 points and 4 assists per game. Manor would lose in the semifinals to eventual state champion Mansfield Timberview but not before creating school history and bringing pride back to Manor.

Ayrton Hignojos COURAGE AWARD Glenn HIGH SCHOOL Why he Won Last summer in the school weight room, Ayrton Hignojos attempted to squat 410 pounds. With encouragement from his teammates and the bar steadied behind his neck, the junior lineman slowly started to stand. The Ooohs and Ahhhs could probably be heard around Glenn’s campus when he reached his goal. At first glance Ayrton looks like any other football player. At 6-3 and 270 pounds, he has become a valued member of Glenn’s offensive line. After a closer look, though, you will notice he does not have a left arm. Imagine trying to play a game as brutal of football with one arm. Yet he succeeded. Ayrton once told the AmericanStatesman he would like to be a coach or a professional bowler. For now, though, he wants to be part of this special team at Glenn and perhaps play college football. “If I were a betting man,” his dad Salvador said, “I wouldn’t bet against him.”

It’s pretty crazy. It’s kind of shocking to me. I didn’t think I’d be here, but all the hard work paid off. I fell in love with the weight room as soon as I found out I could lift. Also I’ve been training outside of just high school and getting better at my technique. — Ayrton Hignojos Ayrton Hignojos with Deshaun Watson.

AVERY KALSU FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR DRIPPING SPRINGS HIGH SCHOOL Why She Won

It’s so awesome. It’s something that I never experienced before and is probably something I’ll never experience again. It was so cool to see all of the athletes in Central Texas here in one place.

While many athletes choose to specialize in individual sports, Avery Kalsu went an extra mile. She made the Texas Girls Coaches Association’s All-State team after leading the Dripping Springs volleyball team to state. She was also named Central Texas Player of the Year by the American-Statesman. But her year did not end there. As a member of the Tigers’ track and field team this spring, Avery participated in the 100 and 400 meters, high jump, long jump, 400 relay, 800 relay and 1,600 relay. She finished in fourth place at the UIL state track meet in the 400. After graduating next year she plans to continue her volleyball career at the University of Tulsa.

BRETT BATY MALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR Lake Travis HIGH SCHOOL

HIGH Why he Won

It’s been really fun. I’m super excited to represent this area. It’s been my home for the last 19 years. I’m just glad I represented this area well and can’t wait to get up there and get started on my professional career.

It would be easy to name Brett Baty our Male Athlete of the Year based solely on baseball. The next chapter of his life was made clear when the New York Mets took him in the first round of the baseball draft last week. It’s almost certain he’ll be on the All-State team. But he also left his mark in basketball. He was named to the American-Statesman’s All-Central Texas second team after helping the Cavaliers go 33-5. The 6-3 forward averaged 12.3 points per game while shooting 62 percent from the field. Coached by his father, Clint Baty, the Cavs reached the Class 6A quarterfinals.

Jeff Walker COACH OF THE YEAR FOOTBALL, LIBERTY HILL HIGH SCHOOL Why he Won During his two years at Liberty Hill, Jeff Walker has been a consistent winner. Overall he’s 23-5 during that stretch and his 2018 team reached the Class 4A state championship game against Waco La Vega at AT&T Stadium. In eight years as a coach, six at Rogers High, his overall record is 82-17. But there is more to Walker than Friday night football. As the school’s athletic director, every Liberty Hill team won the district championship this academic year. Football, boys basketball and girls soccer reached the UIL championship game.

Great players make great coaches. I didn’t get the award with bad players. I think a lot of it is our expectations. We set super high expectations and we don’t lower them for anybody or anything. We’re graduating 32 seniors and 18 starters. It’s going to be hard, but we’re Liberty Hill and the young men are going to work hard and they know our expectation. We expect to do well again. — Jeff Walker

TEXAS SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF INspiration Award GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM Why TheY Won The girls basketball team from the Texas School for the Deaf were as engaging off the court as they were competitive on the floor. It would be easy to define this team by their final record, 33-1. They set a national record for deaf schools with those 33 wins. Their coach Brian Sepak said all of his girls excel in the classroom. Senior point guard Sunita Schmidjorg is the valedictorian of her senior class. Senior shooting guard Leila Sicola is the salutatorian. All three seniors will be in college this fall.

It’s such a big honor to be able to stand up there in front of everyone and to say thank you for the people who have supported our team and who stood up for us. Really anything is possible. We can’t hear, but that doesn’t mean we can’t play. We keep going, we persevere, we work hard and we really are unified with teamwork on and off the court. — Senior Sunita Schmidjorg

Deshaun Watson 2019 Guest Speaker

D The Horn’s Erin Hogan interviews Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson at The Best of All-Centex Preps awards banquet, an event to recognize outstanding high school athletes and coaches, at the Palmer Events Center.

Deshaun Watson answered questions onstage.

Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson signs an autograph for Boys Golf Player of the Year Thomas Bockholt of Westlake High School.

eshaun Watson has taken the football world by storm since being drafted 12th overall by the Houston Texans in 2017. Deshaun is easily one of the most dynamic young quarterbacks in the league and led the Texans to the playoffs in just his second season. Deshaun is a proven winner, dating back to his high school days, but more notably during his career at Clemson where he earned extensive accolades including being named a consensus All-American, claiming ACC Player of the Year and twice winning the prestigious Davey O’Brien and Manning awards. It is evident that the impact Watson had for the Clemson Tigers can’t be rivaled. He is best known for leading Clemson to a 35-31 victory over Alabama for the 2016 national championship. In that game he completed 36 of 56 passes for 420 yards and three scores, including a throw to Hunter Renfrow with 1 second remaining to seal the title. Watson exemplifies the characteristics of a leader both on the field and in the community. After Hurricane Harvey, he donated his first game check to three Texans employees who were affected.

Deshaun Watson was guest speaker at the banquet.

When Watson was a child, his family received a home from Atlanta Falcons’ running back Warrick Dunn as part of Habitat for Humanity so the importance of giving back to the community that shaped you is something Deshaun truly believes in. Watson has now taken his remarkable talent and leadership to the NFL and was one of the best stories in football during his rookie season with the Texans. Deshaun set or tied six NFL records, including most passing touchdowns in a single game by a rookie (5) and most passing touchdowns in a calendar month by a rookie quarterback (16). After only playing seven games in 2017 due to injury, Watson recovered and came back in 2018 to become the first player in NFL history to throw for more than 4,000 yards with 25 touchdowns and also rush for 500 yards and five touchdowns. He led the Texans to an AFC South championship, a playoff berth and earned a Pro Bowl invite. At 23, Watson is only getting better, proving to fans all across the NFL that his style of football is exhilarating and something you don’t want to miss.

ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

BRETT BATY LAKE TRAVIS HIGH SCHOOL

When the New York Mets took Baty with the 12th pick of the first round of the Major League Baseball draft on Monday, they chose the best player in Central Texas in this generation. Baty hit 19 home runs this season and would probably have more if opponents hadn’t walked him more than 40 times. The numbers tell the story: a .624 batting average. 50 runs scored. 16 stolen bases. And perhaps most important of all, he helped lead the Cavaliers to the UIL State Baseball Tournament this past weekend at Dell Diamond.

AUSTIN AMERICAN-STATESMAN

SOFTBALL

ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

DANIELLE SERNA AUSTIN HIGH SCHOOL It was a record-breaking year for the Austin High softball team in 2019. The Maroons broke the school record with 29 victories. They captured the District 25-6A championship and would reach the regional finals for the first time in school history. No player epitomized their season more than Danielle Serna, whose combination of masterful pitching and power hitting carried the Maroons. Her coach Kristen Lozano once said, “She makes everyone else on the team better.” A 2-0 loss to New Braunfels Canyon in the regional championship game ended their season one victory short of the state tournament. Before she heads off to college to pitch at Colorado State next season, Serna left a blueprint for future Austin High teams to follow. [THE AUSTIN AMERICAN-STATESMAN]

ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

WILL BAKER

ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

WESTLAKE HIGH SCHOOL

[THE AUSTIN AMERICAN-STATESMAN]

Will Baker has always been the big man on campus at Westlake and not just because he stands 7 feet tall. A 5-star recruit, he was recruited by almost every college basketball team in the country. He chose to stay home and signed with Texas after considering teams such as North Carolina, Kansas and UCLA. He averaged almost 25 points a game as a senior to go with 13 rebounds. The only thing that slowed him down was a thumb injury that kept him out of playoff game against eventual state champion Cibolo Steele.

MIKAYLA WOODS

No one dominated girls basketball in Central Texas the past two years more than Hendrickson senior Mikayla Woods. In February she scored her 2,000th career points. The numbers in her senior season tell the story: 21 points per game, 6 rebounds, 6 assists, 6 steals. In her final game she scored 40 points in a regional playoff loss to Allen. Coached by Norma Sierra, Woods helped the Hawks compiled a 69-11 in her junior and senior years. The next stop will be the University of Texas at San Antonio.

ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

[THE AUSTIN AMERICAN-STATESMAN]

WESTLAKE HIGH SCHOOL

After bogeying his first three holes on the final day of the 6A state golf tournament, Thomas Bockholt was seemingly out of the running for individual medals. But he got hot, earning five birdies on the next seven holes. He would then birdie on the 18th hole of the final round to force a playoff with David Harrison of Byron Nelson. Bockholt won state individual honors when he sank a 12-foot birdie on the first playoff hole to win it and help the Chaparrals to their third straight state title. Next year he will golf at Rice.

SADIE ENGLEMANN

Sadie Englemann burst onto the golf season when she became an All-State player last year as a freshman. Now Westlake’s No. 1 golfer, she had another spectacular year, finishing in a tie for third place at the 6A championship. More importantly, Englemann and her teammates -- Bentley Cotton, Madelyn Jones, Jackie Feldman and Ally Black -- defended their state championship. They won state last month with a 20-stroke edge over runnerup Plano West. Our girls golfer of the year is Sadie Englemann of Westlake High.

In his four seasons anchoring Hendrickson’s lineup, the attacking midfielder has earned All-State honors as well as district MVP recognition. He saved his best for last, translating what coach Jacob Stern calls “the best technical skill I have ever seen” into 17 goals and three assists while leading the Hawks to the District 13-6A title and a spot in the regional quarterfinals.

Although MaKenzie stands just 4 feet, 8 inches, no one stood taller than this dynamic midfielder for the Panthers. The daughter of Pflugervile head coach Mike Harvey, MaKenzie had 19 goals and 21 assists while leading the Panthers to a Class 5A regional final and the best season in school history. A starter for Hendrickson’s state championship team in 2017, the Arizona State signee made the most of her lone season for the 5A regional finalist Panthers.

The leader of Georgetown’s powerful boys contingent had quantity and quality at the UIL Class 5A state meet; he finished the meet with two gold medals, set a new state record in the 100-yard butterfly (48.05 seconds) during preliminaries, then won the state title in the event. He also won gold in the 100 backstroke to become the area’s lone double individual champion. The versatile Alarcon teamed up with William Corona, Corby Furrer and Daniel Pineiro to set a Class 5A record in the boys 400 freestyle. His next step is to swim for the University of Louisville.

ANA HERCEG

WEISS HIGH SCHOOL

Weiss High School, the newest school in Pflugerville, had several outstanding performers throughout the year, including one of the state’s fastest swimmers. At the UIL state meet, Herceg won a gold medal in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1 minutes, 46.39 seconds. That complements the gold medal she won in the same event as a freshman. ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

GAuRAV SINGH

ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

[THE AUSTIN AMERICAN-STATESMAN]

WESTWOOD HIGH SCHOOL

Singh was a busy man during the academic year. During the fall he helped Westwood claim the Class 6A state team tennis title. He did his part, winning his singles match 6-2, 6-1 over Taylor Stafford of Houston Memorial. As a team, Westwood finished the fall schedule with a 20-0 record. In the spring, Singh was state bound again. In the 6A mixed doubles, he and partner Kiana Graham won their quarterfinal and semifinal matches before losing to a team from Plano West in the finals.

MEGHA DANIA

[THE AUSTIN AMERICAN-STATESMAN]

LAKE TRAVIS HIGH SCHOOL

As her opponent’s final shot landed out of bounds, Megha Dania let out a shout. Her first trip to the UIL State Tennis championship was a success. She won the Class 6A singles championship. In an All-Centex final, she rallied for a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory over Jessica Lu of Westwood in College Station. Megha started playing competitive tennis when she was 9. Today she ranks No. 6 in the state by the United States Tennis Association. A winner in the classroom, too, she carries a 3.7 GPA on a 4.0 unweighted scale. She plans to play tennis after she graduates next year but is undecided on where she will go.

ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

DUSHON ORR

AUSTIN AMERICAN-STATESMAN

ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

TAYLOR HIGH SCHOOL

[THE AUSTIN AMERICAN-STATESMAN]

Orr saved his best for last. He became one of the most decorated high school athletes at the UIL State Track and Field championships in May. In his signature event, the long jump, he won a state gold medal with a leap of 22 feet, 4 ¾ inches. Later that day he won a pair of silver medals in the 100 meters and 200 meters. His time in the 200, 21.48 seconds, set a new school record.

BAILEY GOGGANS

As Bailey Goggans rounded the final turn in the 800-meter run at the UIL state meet, roughly 25,000 people were on their feet. The sophomore from Marble Falls was on pace to break the Class 4A record. And she did it with a time of 2 minutes, 7.39 seconds. Coming from the high school that provided Olympic silver medalist Leo Manzano, Goggans would also win gold in the 1600, giving her three gold medals at state in two years.
