t’s the second year for the Austin STEAM Scout Camp, and they’re gearing up for a theme of astronomical proportions — TechLab: Space. “It’s going to be out of this world,” says Jessica Snider, Director of STEM, Conservation and Sustainability, Boy Scouts Capitol Area Council. “Every year we have a theme that trains kids to live in extreme environments. This year it’s going to be outer space, so we’re asking questions like ‘how would you grow vegetables if you had no light and no water,’ and ‘how are you going to program your robot to do different things in a space environment?’” The Austin STEAM Camp provides

the type of engagement, excitement and hands-on activities required for successful early STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) education. Camp attendees will use tools like DSLR cameras, laser cutter/engravers, 3D printers, robotics kits (including state-of-the-art NAO robots), hydrology display boards, Labview and Adobe Creative Suite software to explore, design and create. The camp will also feature classes like Toy Design (for younger kids) and Model Design (for older kids) where attendees will learn everything from the basics of CAD design and Tinkercad to working with and taking care of the actual 3D printers. The camp is open to boys and girls entering the Third, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, Seventh, Eighth and Ninth

grades, and camp participants do not have to be a registered Boy Scout or Girl Scout to attend. Week 1 will run June 13-June 17, Week 2 will run June 20-June 24, Week 3 will run June 27July 1, and Week 4 will run July 11-July 15. There are 800 spaces available, with four classes for kids ages 11 and up, and three classes for kids age 10 and under. In a world where more and more jobs require knowledge of STEM, this camp is one that will be a learning experience for any camp goer. “One of the things we push is, to be a good citizen, you really need to understand STEM,” says Snider. “You need to know how science and technology affects our world.” The camp also believes that STEAM should be available to all youth, and is working to ensure opportunities

are in place so anyone who wants to attend is able to do so. Generous grants have allowed the camp to provide scholarships for students from disadvantaged areas. The camp provides free breakfast and lunches for attendees who come in on scholarship, along with transportation. “Sometimes it’s not easy to get to an outstanding camp like this,” says Snider. “So, we want to knock down those barriers that might be in their way.” Registration is $325 per youth, and will include a T-shirt, water bottle, patch, flash drive and two nutritious snacks daily. Box lunches are available for order for each day; please select this option during registration and indicate any dietary concerns. For registration and more info, visit www.techlab.camp.

their work with one another along the way. These summer workshops emphasize all aspects of the writing process, from idea generation to revision to publication, and all campers are invited to publish their best work in Badgerdog’s two professionally-bound anthologies—Rise for elementary-age writers and Emerge for middle and high-school writers. Each camp session culminates with a reading

on-site, where students perform an original poem or story before an audience of fellow writers, parents, family, and friends. At the end of the summer, coinciding with the anthology release, Badgerdog hosts an end-of-summer reading, where selected campers from each workshop perform their work at the annual Texas Teen Book Festival. All summer camp writers are invited to attend and sign books for their fans.

entral Texas kids can explore the outdoors, learn about nature and zip line the day away this summer at adventure-filled McKinney Roughs Nature Park. Just east of Austin, nestled along the Colorado River and the Lost Pines, your child can discover the wonders of the outdoors in a safe, fun and educational day-camp setting. LCRA’s McKinney Roughs Nature Park has 1,100 acres of pine forests, box canyons and post oak meadows to explore. Campers explore new areas each week— investigating ponds, meadows, forests and the Colorado River using binoculars, insect nets, dip nets and more. McKinney Roughs offers summer camps based on a child’s age at the time camp starts, and each week’s camp activities will revolve around a different natural science theme with the help of experienced camp counselors. “We’ve been providing outdoor experiences to campers and introducing them to the Colorado River at McKinney Roughs Nature Camp for 15 years,” said LCRA Park Program Coordinator Erin Holley. “Our day camp is a great option for parents who want their children to learn more about the natural world through experiences, but still want their children close to home.”

New overnight YMCA summer camp starts this year STATESMAN CONTENT MARKETING

nplugged, but reconnected — join us for a week and experience summer as it was meant to be at the ALL NEW Overnight Summer Camp at YMCA Camp Twin Lakes. For the first time ever, YMCA Camp Twin Lakes is offering week-long overnight sessions (five in total) in addition to our regular day camp schedule. While a week may not seem that long in the grand scheme of things, our themed overnight camps have the power to not only change the course of a summer, but to help kids develop in positive ways that can last a lifetime. An added benefit to parents, it is centrally located in Cedar Park near U.S. 183 and Avery Ranch Blvd. Campers stay in single-gender cabins with two camp counselors at the 55-acre site complete with two lakes, tango tower, paintball field, 100 foot Wet Willie Water slide, archery, low ropes, team challenge course and much more. Our cabins are brand new and feature modern restrooms and air conditioning. Most of the weekly sched-

ule takes place with the cabin group — same-gender, similar-aged groups that travel around camp together under the guidance of camp counselors trying different camp activities. Our activities are “Challenge by Choice,” which simply means that we create an environment where campers are encouraged to push themselves to try each activity. While activities are important, the real benefits of life at YMCA Camp Twin Lakes comes from the character

development, guidance and encouragement to help kids develop and realize their potential. All activities at Camp Twin Lakes are led by trained staff members who always have your child’s well-being at heart. For example, all water sports are led by YMCA-certified lifeguards and trained support staff, while the high ropes course is supervised by our high-ropes-certified staff. More than just fun ways to spend a summer day, all activities serve to

reinforce our core values and strengthen relationships between campers and staff. Who can attend overnight camp? All kids entering grades 3-8 are eligible, but space is limited so register early. The cost for Y family members is $649 and the cost for non-members is $724. For more details about YMCA Camp Twin Lakes, visit camptwinlakes.ymcagwc. org. THE CONTEMPORARY AUSTIN

Find some summer creativity at The Contemporary Austin STATESMAN CONTENT MARKETING

T

he natural setting at The Contemporary Austin — Laguna Gloria has been fostering creativity and enhancing visual awareness for visitors for more than 50 years, and this summer is no exception with a wide variety of programs for all ages! Highly qualified art teachers guide students in small classes (12 to 13 kids) as they learn to observe the beauty that surrounds them and appreciate it through the creation of art. We’re looking forward to artistically inspiring the more than 2,500 kids who are expected to enroll this summer in classes on the gorgeous 12-acre historic site at The Contemporary Austin – Art School at Laguna Gloria. Back by popular demand…this year, The Contemporary Austin is bringing back Creativity Camp: New World Kids – an innovative two-week camp where children ages 4-5 playfully learn a new “sensory” alphabet that includes line, color, texture, movement, sound, rhythm, space, light, and shape, to expand their creativity and discover a

new way of looking at the world. Beautiful Bugs and Fabulous Fish are just two of the fun art classes that are included among the 300 classes offered this summer, sure to get kids roaming and exploring the outdoor campus looking for things that capture the eye. Other classes include painting, drawing, wheel-throwing (pottery), photography, collage, mosaics, watercolor, jewelry, glass, and more. “The kids love exploring the grounds,” says Judith Sims, site director for the campus, which

is located off MoPac on West 35th Street on Lake Austin. “In the Fabulous Fish class, they paint and draw and sculpt fish and other underwater creatures and plants that they’ve directly observed. And in the Beautiful Bugs class, they learn all about ecology.” There’s plenty of creative fun for older kids, too. Teenagers may find inspiration through classes including Computer Drawing and Painting and Urban Photography. Teens also often enjoy ceramics classes at Laguna Gloria. “We have whimsical

classes for the younger kids and more serious explorations of art-making techniques for the older kids who want to try something new or build on their skills. And all of our high-quality programs take full advantage of our beautiful, wooded location on Lake Austin.” Details: Summer classes begin June 8 and run 11 weeks. Classes are held weekdays 9 a.m. until noon, and 1 pm until 4 p.m. Registration is now open for both The Contemporary Austin museum members and

STAY INFORMED

The questions every parent should ask when choosing a Summer Camp

S

ummer dawns, which means one thing for thousands of Texas children: camp. Here are the questions every parent should ask when choosing a summer camp for their children, 1. What is the camper to teacher ratio for the majority of the day? 2. How do they handle supervision of children, discipline issues? 3. What age groups will be combined together? (If you have a younger child,

you may not want them mixed with older children.) 4. What is the schedule for the program, what will they be doing each day? Review how much is downtime versus planned activities. 5. Ask the qualifications of the teacher? (Age, training, years working with children: especially ask who has First Aid and CPR) 6. Does all staff have satisfactory and up-to-

date criminal background checks? 7. What is the policy

for handling injuries and illness? 8. What does the phys-

ical space and outside play area look like? Can children wander away or can outsiders reach them? Are there fences, locks or other precautions? 9. Do the campers go swimming or near water? Do they take swim proficiency tests? Is there a lifeguard on duty? What are the ratios for supervision in water? 10. What insurance does the program carry? Do they have liability insurance?

Consideration for field trips 1. Who is driving the vehicle and what is their driving record? 2. Are there safety restraints in the vehicle? 3. How far do they go on field trips? 4. What is their procedure for checking the vehicle to ensure no child is left on? 5. How many teachers attend a field trip? 6. Is there a vehicle inspection report?

CAMPING

Summer camp memories begin with discussions, research By April Bamburg STATESMAN CONTENT MARKETING

S

pending time in nature is affordable and relatively easy, if you prepare your gear and plan other details. To get started on your fun and safe camping trip, consider the following basics. Summer camp can be a magical place, an unforgettable experience for kids. If you’re looking for a summer camp, there are steps you can take to ensure your children will have the best experience possible. 1. Talk to your child. Before you get into researching camps, it’s a good idea to sit down with your child and talk about what he or she wants out of camp. Consider what you’d like them to get out of the experience as well. Let the discussion with your child guide the rest of your research. You may find that they want to focus on certain interests during the summer, and you may be able to find camps that do just that. If your child knows which camp he or she is interested in, you may want to find out whether their friends will be attending as well. Often, it helps to have people your child knows at these camps, which can amplify positive experiences. 2. Learn about camp types and availability. Find out what types of camps are available in your area. Summer camps aren’t as simple as heading out into the

woods and roughing it for a few days. There are many options out there. These types of camps are common: • Sleep-away or resident camps. The American Camp Association notes that resident camps typically begin for youths around the age of 7 and offer a wide range of options for parents and youths from which to choose. You can explore co-ed or single-sex camps, as well as

the various overnight accommodations that different resident camps offer. • Day camps. Day camps are great for young campers, or those who aren’t comfortable with an extended time away from home at a resident camp. Campers return home at the end of the day after participating in a wide range of activities. • Specialty camps. These are single-focus camps, and this is where it’s a great idea to know

what your child is interested in. You may be able to find a camp that helps him or her learn to ride a horse, learn martial arts or focus on another special interest. Research your chosen camp. Explore the camp’s history and staffer-to-camper ratio, and find out about the communication plan. You’ll want to ensure that there are enough staff members to keep your camper safe and be clear about the camp’s communication rules. Do they

CAMPING

Family-friendly camping ideas and reliable tips By Noah Bradon STATESMAN CONTENT MARKETING

S

pending time in nature is affordable and relatively easy, if you prepare your gear and plan other details. To get started on your fun and safe camping trip, consider the following basics. Camping can be easy or difficult, depending on the gear you bring, so remember to focus on that prior to leaving. A cooler is a necessity. Take into account the number of people who are camping and what you need to keep cold. Only refrigerate items that will spoil, including meat, eggs and cheese. No need to refrigerate apples or granola bars. Sleeping bags are incredibly useful in all climates. If the weather is warm in the evening, it can be unzipped

and used as a blanket, but in cold weather, it is best to keep it sealed. Bug spray and sunscreen should always be among your supplies, and if you plan to venture into the woods, consider buying bug repellent specifically for such an area. Flashlights and lanterns always come in handy when the sun goes down, so it can be a good idea to pack a few, in case one fails. Buying headlamps for each member of your camping party is a great way to ensure that no one is left in the dark — children also will find that having their own personal headlamp can be a lot of fun. Gathering around the campfire for s’mores is a tradition when camping, but keep an eye on the fire before you head to your tent to make sure it’s

out because even dying embers can result in an unwanted fire. Campfires are great for cooking, but they are often messy to clean up and require a lot of time. Here are a few quick and easy-to-assemble lunch ideas that your camping crew will be sure to scarf down. Casual tapas can consist of sliced apples, grapes, crackers and cheese or chips and salsa. Add juice boxes for kids and beer or wine for the adults. With a can opener, the possibilities are endless. Tuna or bean salads are easy to make and can go with bread, wraps or crackers. Whatever your scheme in your camp kitchen, just have fun with it. Camping is a great way to bond as a family, and the above tips can make it a whole lot easier.

magine the creative answers Sherwood Forest Summer Camp goers give when asked by their teachers that quintessential question this fall: What did you do this summer? You can bet the answer won’t be about the latest video games. In fact, the reply might even come in proper Queen’s English. Sherwood Forest Summer Camp activities, which start July 1016, takes place in a 23acre wooded medieval village where campers are transported back to a world of knights, ladies and a simpler way of life. Campers now have the option to sleep in the castle or “rough it” in a pavilion where they might have a latenight visit from the Merry Folk of Sherwood Forest. While at camp, kids are immersed in nature, new experiences and building friendships. Modern devices like cell phones, video games and television aren’t available, giving youngsters an opportunity to fully engage and ex-

plore a magical Renaissance world. “Green” campers, who have never attended the camp, will follow the Path of the Scholar where they learn a bit of everything, experiencing 10-12 classes twice per week. All Sea Dragons (age 7-9) will follow the Path of the Scholar as well. “Veteran” campers — those who have already attended at least one week of Sherwood Forest Summer Camp — can

continue following the Path of the Scholar, or if they are age 10 and older, they can choose the specialist path offered during their session as an alternative. Specialist paths offer campers the opportunity to delve more deeply into that week’s subject matter. New campers attending multiple weeks must follow the Path of the Scholar their first week and then may choose either to continue as a Scholar or to specialize

for subsequent week(s). Developing skills essential to daily Renaissance life is exciting and edifying for young campers, especially at an impressionable age

when positive influences are most valuable. Try Falconry, Blacksmithing, Leatherworking and more. Session 1 runs July 10-16, Session 2 is July

aring for kids is what Extend-A-Care does all year long. The organization was formed to provide quality, affordable child care for parents and it runs 75 after-school camps in school districts across the Austin area. But why not keep the learning and good times going all summer? Extend-A-Care is now registering for all-day licensed child care for children 3-12 years old for weekly summer sessions that start June 6 and run through August 12. Each week has its own theme, taken from literature books that the students read. From the books springs a curriculum that offers children a continuous source of new and engaging material and themed activities throughout the week. Examples of the sessions include “Oceans Alive” (Session

1), in which campers will begin a summer-long exploration of our planet’s animal population with an in-depth dive into the ocean to learn about marine life with shark science experiments, jellyfish crafts and edible aquarium snacks. The week of August 1-5 (Session 9) is “Animal Superheroes.” Campers will listen to real life stories of superhero service animals combined with furry flights of fantasy, inspiring a rollicking week of caped crusader curriculum. The affordable fee covers care from 7:15 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. for most of the 10 sites (7 a.m. for Hays and Galindo locations), snacks at mid-morning and in the afternoon, and weekly field trips plus swimming twice a week to stay cool. Fee assistance is available. There is also a discount for those who pay in advance for a full summer of child care by May 13. To sign up, call (512) 472-9402 or visit www. eackids.org.
