entral Texas boys can build inventions like Tony Stark, shoot arrows like Hawkeye, learn about bugs like Spider-Man, and run through obstacles like The Flash at this summer’s Cub Scout Day Camps. The program is available for all elementary school-aged boys, whether or not they are a Scout. The camps, part of the Capitol Area Council-Boy Scouts of America’s summer program, all have a “superhero” theme and will feature traditional outdoor activities and games that emphasize learning and physical fitness. These include archery, swimming, nature study, BB gun shooting, obstacle course, citizenship and small building projects. The Cub Day Camps are happening at several locations all over greater Austin and across Central Texas. Parents can find all the details at www.cubsummercamp. org. Some camp locations offer a daytime program between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., while others will have “twilight” hours between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. Costs range from $45 to $100, depending on which camp families choose. Scout parents have long known the benefits of the summer events with the Pack or Troop: learning new skills, making new friends, making progress on badges and belt loops. But for parents of boys who ha-
ven’t joined Scouts, why choose these camps? “Cub Scout Day camps offer a broad range of activities that kids just can’t experience anywhere else in a single camp,” says Shea Mackin, a Pflugerville Scouting leader and parent of three Scouts. “Opening enrollment to boys who aren’t currently part of the Cub Scouting program gives kids the chance to sample a lot of

magine the creative answers Sherwood Forest Summer Camp goers give when asked by their teachers that quintessential question this fall: What did you do this summer? You can bet the answer won’t be about the latest video games. In fact, the reply might even come in proper Queen’s English. Sherwood Forest Summer Camp activities, which start July 5-11, take place in a 23-acre wooded medieval village where campers are transported back to a world of knights, ladies and a simpler way of life. Campers now have the option to sleep in the castle or “rough it” in a pavilion where they might have a late-night visit from the Merry Folk of Sherwood Forest. While at camp, kids are immersed in nature, new experiences and building friendships. Modern devices like cell phones, video games and television aren’t available, giving youngsters an opportunity to fully engage and explore a magical Renaissance world. “Green” campers, who

And at Camp TSR, kids and teens ages 5 - 16 can get into action sports, absolutely no experience required! What makes Camp TSR unique is the three cable systems and boat lake that give campers a lot of water time to learn to wakeboard, surf and ski in a fun and controlled environment. The facility’s cable park system was recently ranked in the top seven worldwide, making Texas Ski Ranch a top destination for professional athletes. Off the water, campers can try out the snowboard park, a 15,000-square-foot trampoline park, skate park, rock wall, paint ball course and more. “Camp TSR is a great camp for teens and younger children alike.” says Catie Bialick with the Texas Ski Ranch, where the camp is located. “The action sports definitely appeal to an older audience, even for

“Because of this, we have many campers who return to us year after year, some even becoming camp staff!” Anna Mazursky, 15, of Austin, is gearing up for her seventh year. Anna helps the official counselors with younger camp-
ers and enjoys seeing old friends each summer and making new ones. “This camp is full of all different and exciting activities such as wakeboarding, snowboarding, springloaded-trampoline park, skateboarding and much more.” Anna says. “It is a great place to make new friends and learn some really cool sports. Texas Ski Ranch treats me like family and I would recommend it to anyone!” Ali Banks, 16, also of Austin, is getting ready for her eighth camp year at Camp TSR. “I keep going back to TSR because of such the enjoy encouraging environment and great staff/riders. Everyone at TSR is always helpful and extremely nice. They also are a ton of fun to hang out with.” Ali is partial to wakeboarding (“It’s such a fun sport and so unique.”) but is enthusiastic about the entire experience. “There is no way not to have fun! magine a schedule so full of fun, you actually forget about TV and the iPad. Sports in the morning, tie-dye at midday, pool time in the afternoon, and that’s just the beginning. Add zip-lining, theme nights and water-balloon launches, and it’s a summer to remember forever. This is summer camp. Macaroni art and morning mush it is not. Here are a few of the more unexpected benefits of summer camp.
Did we mention fun? Outdoor playtime is disappearing for most American children, and quickly. American kids now spend as little as 5 minutes playing outside on average, even though the experts recommend one hour a day. Amid peer pressure, high academic expectations and excessive screen time, kids have less and less time to be kids. Camp gives kids the freedom to shed expectations, play and explore.

At school, kids find their niche in a peer group which — for better or worse — likely operates under prescribed roles, attitudes and behaviors. At camp they experience a new peer group, freeing them from the social expectations they find them-

Camp is one of the most lasting, rewarding experiences parents can give their children. It builds self-esteem, gives kids a sense of independence and allows them to take a breather from the

ummer is a blast at SoccerZone, where kids ages 5-14 focus on having fun while developing teamwork, making friends, and learning new activities at their AllStar Sports Camp. SoccerZone’s All-Star Sports Camp promotes teamwork and sportsmanship through healthy competition via sports and active games. The camp’s main goal is for every kid to have fun exploring a variety of sports while making friends and memories along the way! Campers are taught basic skills and game rules, providing them with the opportunity to discover new talents and push themselves to refine their natural abilities. The camp covers a variety of activities, including popular sports such as Soccer, Basketball, Flag Football, Kickball,
Ping-Pong, Whiffleball, and Dodgeball, as well as fun team-building games like Capture the Flag (and related games “Air Raid” and “Battleship”), Obstacle Courses, and Pickleball, a sport that combines elements of Badminton, Tennis and PingPong. Every child receives kid-friendly coaching and instruction as well as a camp t-shirt. “Our goal at the AllStar Sports Camp is to make sure every kid gets an opportunity to learn and compete in a fun, supportive environment,” said Darren Brown, SoccerZone Owner/President. “Our high retention rate is attributable to our amazing team of camp counselors. Their interaction with each kid is what sets the All-Star Sports Camp apart from other day camps.” It’s no wonder that in a recent survey 97 percent of parents recommended the All-Star Sports Camp
to their friends and family. All-Star Sports Summer Camps at SoccerZone are offered in half- (8:30 a.m.-Noon or 1-4:30 p.m.) and full-day sessions (8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.) on weekdays from June 8-August 21. Full-day campers enjoy daily lunches from some of the most popular eateries around like Schlotzsky’s, Chick-fil-A, Kerbey Lane, Wing Stop, and Thundercloud Subs. Camp is that rare experience that is fun AND good for you. The staff at Camp Champions likes to say camp is like cheesecake that gives you lower cholesterol and ripped abs. At Camp Champions, they are committed to being a partner with parents to help their children shine. To do this, they ask two important questions: ■ What are the skills that predict for success in later life? ■ How can we help children develop these skills? Success Skills: The Great 8 Certain skills are especially important in later life. While experts differ on an exact list, certain skills come up more often than others. Camp Champions calls these skills the “Great 8”: Communication, Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, Leadership, Resilience (Grit), Self Control and Optimism. These skills are critical and can be taught and learned. Helping Children Develop the Great 8 Camp Champions is a unique learning environment. The activities are fun. The counsel-

Every activity furthers kids’ knowledge about one of the Earth’s biomes and deepens their understanding of one or more of the S.T.E.A.M. concepts. Here’s their calendar for this summer: ■ June 8-19: Forests and Rainforests ■ June 22-July 3: Oceans ■ July 6-17: Frozen
Worlds ■ July 20-31: Fresh Water ■ August 2-14: Caves and Underground ■ August 17-21: Mountains and Volcanoes The Brainery Highlights Besides the special biweekly themed camps about the Biomes of the Earth and the emphasis on S.T.E.A.M. and related activities, kids will also experience two to three fun and educational Field Trips per week. Stepping Stone also offers a one-of-akind Entrepreneurs & Philanthropists program and a professional Speaker Series. Kids will also find
other fun at the Brainery this summer, including science projects, chess tournaments, Fit for Life activities, dual language programs, cooking projects and more. Swimming lessons are available at most Austinarea campuses, and they also offer a Junior Counselors program for kids ages 11 to 13.
