STATE THEATRE NEW JERSEY FAMILY DAY WORKSHOP © JEFFREY AUGER
A MESSAGE FROM OUR LEADERSHIP Dear Friends,
Dear Friends,
There is a lot to celebrate after the incredible success of the 2017-2018 Season. Our Broadway Series achieved its highest attendance in State Theatre history, highlighted by a weekend-long engagement of the New Jersey premiere of Jersey Boys. And our new Broadway Series Season Ticket program was a huge hit with our audiences.
The accomplishments of State Theatre New Jersey described in this report reflect our dedication to serving the community in a meaningful, impactful way.
We presented 164 Education & Outreach events serving 36,293 people. We also provided more than $600,000 in free and subsidized admissions to give every child the ability to experience live theater. By continuing to feature a diverse lineup of events for patrons of all ages and backgrounds, we reaffirm our promise to provide the finest national and international performing artists for the people of Middlesex County and the State of New Jersey. We are so proud to share these highlights and many more from our 2017-2018 Season. None of this would be possible without the vision and leadership of the State Theatre Board of Trustees, our staff, and the generous support of our donors and partners.
A commitment to service and excellence is embedded in The State’s very fabric, which is why I was honored to join this historic organization as President & CEO. I am excited to be working with a passionate and committed Board and staff to build on the successes of past seasons, and look forward to deepening our engagement with the community around us. This non-profit theater thrives due to the remarkable support we receive from individuals, the business community, private foundations, and government sources. There is so much more ahead on our horizon and we can’t wait to share the future with you! Regards,
On behalf of all of us at State Theatre New Jersey, thank you. Regards,
Scott Fergang Chair of the Board of Trustees

STATE-OF-THE-ART LIGHTING & SOUND During the 2017-2018 Season, we purchased new light and sound fixtures—including stage lighting, complementary digital sound boards, aluminum risers, and video equipment: 24 Intelligent-Moving LED Light Fixtures for spot beams, special effects, and stage washes; 24 Cyc Lights for curtain and cyclorama washes with pure LED colors instead of gels; 4 Xenon Follow Spots that are 1.5 times brighter than the retiring Super Trooper spots; and Yamaha Rivage PM10 Digital Sound Board and Yamaha CL5 Digital Sound Board for a higherquality sound experience in the theater and from the stage monitors. 7
EDUCATION & COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT State Theatre New Jersey’s Education & Community Engagement programs make the performing arts accessible to audiences of all ages and backgrounds. We have been dedicated to this mission since our doors first opened to the public in 1988. Over the course of 30 seasons, the theater’s Education & Community Engagement— comprising performances, workshops, lectures, masterclasses, and artist residencies—have touched the lives of nearly three-quarters of a million people. During that time, millions of dollars in free and subsidized programs have helped bring the performing arts to disadvantaged and underserved communities throughout the region.

In 2017-2018, State Theatre New Jersey presented seven Autism-Friendly Relaxed Performances for schools and the general public. Children and adults on the autism spectrum or with other sensitivity issues—along with their families, friends, and classmates—experienced the joy of live theater in a welcoming, judgment-free environment, with a relaxed attitude toward theater etiquette. Special accommodations included modulated sound and lighting, a calming room for taking a break during the show, a family restroom, and print and video resources to help attendees know in advance what to expect at the performance. ©JEFFREY AUGER
SYMPHONY SCHOLARS UNDERSERVED YOUNGSTERS ENGAGED WITH LIVE CLASSICAL MUSIC BY A WORLD-CLASS ORCHESTRA IN A WORLD-CLASS CONCERT HALL. The State welcomed 155 middle schoolers from New Brunswick’s instrumental music program as our 2017-2018 State Theatre New Jersey Symphony Scholars. On a memorable Sunday afternoon, they attended an all-Beethoven concert by the Staatskapelle Weimar, followed by a special reception with piano soloist Sunwook Kim and conductor Kirill Karabits. For many of the Scholars, this was their very first experience at a live performance of classical music. To enhance students’ understanding, appreciation, and enjoyment of the concert, the theater provided special pre- and post-performance classes, a study guide, and CDs of the music. Participants in this free program also received a complimentary concert ticket for an accompanying family member.

COMMUNITY RESIDENCY GAVE PEOPLE A DIRECT AND PERSONAL CONNECTION WITH THE ARTS. Committed to making the arts accessible to everyone, State Theatre New Jersey sends gifted artists into the community to share their talents “up close and personal” with a wide range of audiences. This free program places special emphasis on reaching disadvantaged and underserved groups throughout the region. In 2017-2018, poet Glenis Redmond returned for her 10th season as State Theatre New Jersey’s Artist-in-Residence. Over six weeks, the South Carolina native shared her powerful poetic gifts at 28 sites across New Jersey—from schools and senior centers to youth shelters, adult residential treatment centers, and schools for adults with disabilities. In addition to presenting poetic “Informances,” Glenis led in-depth writing workshops for students, seniors, teachers, adults in recovery, and the general public, many of whom came together at the end of the residency for a celebratory poetry reading showcasing the vibrant voices in our diverse community.

Kid-friendly favorites such as Zootopia, Mary Poppins, and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory drew audiences from far and wide. The movies were well attended in particular by New Brunswick’s Latino community, including large groups of children in the city’s summer recreation program.
MILK & COOKIES $3 TICKET PRICE MADE THESE PERFORMANCES AN AFFORDABLE OPTION FOR FAMILIES. In 2017-2018, State Theatre New Jersey’s Milk & Cookies series brought the thrill of live performance to 923 children and their families. The Saturday series expanded from 12 to 14 events, with the addition of two Autism-Friendly Relaxed Performances. 10
