“Peking Dreams” Andrew S. Grossman, Producer
FAMILY SERIES MADE POSSIBLE BY
This program is made possible in part through a grant by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts.
Peking Dreams
The Program 1. Opening 2. Acrobatic Master and His Pupils The Peking courtyard is bathed in bright moonlight. In the dim light of the training room, three children formally become pupils to an acrobatic master. Through patient teaching, the master is determined to pass his art and tradition down to his pupils. 3. The Drunken Beauty Amidst hundreds of flowers in bloom, the imperial concubine in the Forbidden City admires the full moon while drinking and toasting. Hanging on the swing of a trapeze, the actress performs a variety of stunts. Beneath her, the beautiful maids of the palace perform the spinning plates. 4. Martial Art Inspired by Chinese philosophy and legend, Chinese martial art combines hard and soft elements with the philosophical principles of Yin and Yang. Actors strike, kick, throw, and jump onstage in a jubilant manifestation of freedom and boldness. 5. Solo On A Pole This performance represents a perfect combination of energy and beauty beyond compare. 6. Contortion With Carpets’ Spinning In the Forbidden City, the Emperor and his maids drink wine and dance. Artfully waving longsleeves, the maids sway and twirl with a tapestry. This act is a combination of dancers’ long sleeves in classical Chinese dance, contortion, and carpet spinning, and a reflection of suppleness and beauty. 7. Hoop Diving Everyone is merely a transient guest in Beijing, a fast-developing modern city, and each visitor is prone to a sense of loneliness. This seemingly negative attitude is a vivid picture of how helpless the people of Beijing sometimes feel. Young people work at an extreme pace and constantly achieve new speed records. The two actors sweep past two hoops
on the table, backward somersault past five hoops, execute a 360-degree twist past five hoops, and backward somersault past six hoops. The actors perform with enormous vitality, spirit, and extraordinary skills in a perfect representation of Peking culture. –Intermission – 1. Diabolo Diabolo has a long history in China, initially as a game in the imperial palace and then becoming popular among the greater population. The diabolo craze swept Peking and to this day is known to every household there. The diabolo comes alive in the hands of the girls who fly backwards and forwards, allowing us to see the quickness, gracefulness, and even humor of the performers. 2. Aerial Silk A boy from Peking is handsome and forthright; a girl from Peking is beautiful and elegant. From acquaintance to friendship, and from friendship to love, the couple represents a moving, romantic story. The actor and actress move and dance with remarkable skill on the colored silk high above the floor. They at times express tender and romantic sentiments, hugging tightly, and at other times gaze deeply into each other’s eyes, deeply emphasizing the sentiment and glamour. 3. Umbrellas Feet Juggling & Hula Hoops In autumn, the weather of Beijing is unpredictable: sometimes sunny and peaceful and sometimes raging and stormy. Dexterous and quick in action, the performer juggles umbrellas by feet. The umbrellas fly on the girl’s feet and the hoops twirl around the other girls. This act demonstrates the flexibility and beauty of the Chinese circus and acrobatic art. 4. Straw Hats Juggling In old Peking, a rich family marries off their daughter and many people take part in the merry-making. The actors perform various stunts while holding straw hats and spinning them high in the air in this humorous and popular program.
November 13-14, 2015
5. Bicycle Stunts This act is based on a famous Peking Opera story: “The Generals of the Yang Family.” Accompanied by music and dressed in the costume of women warriors, the acrobatic girls execute spectacular and stunning tricks on their bicycles. 6. Final act: Balancing On High Chairs The Great Wall, the greatest miracle created by the people of China, is recognized as a symbol of Peking. It has witnessed thousands of years of Chinese culture; it has heard the drums of war roaring; it has seen countless dynasties rise and fall; it can tell of the vicissitudes of history. In this piece, the actor flawlessly executes various stunning and breathtaking movements on stacked-up chairs. 7. Finale The final act ends with a finale featuring all performers!
About the Artists PEKING DREAMS Peking (today known as Beijing), the capital of the People’s Republic of China, is a famous historical and cultural city with a history spanning 1,000 years and a wealth of precious Chinese cultural heritage including the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace, and the Temple of Heaven. Acrobatic art, Chinese circus, and Peking Opera are Chinese cultural treasures and are beloved among the people of Peking. These art forms combine music, acrobatics, performance, mime, and dance and share many similarities with Western culture. Foreign tourists walking along the streets or strolling through the parks of Peking can often hear natives sing beautiful Peking opera, see them play diabolo, or see them performing other acrobatics. Peking Dreams, incorporating elements of acrobatics, Chinese circus, and Peking Opera invites audiences into an artistic world full of history and wonder. The actors’ flawless performance, colorful costumes, and elaborate
make-up will astound audiences with visual and aural treats. NATIONAL CIRCUS AND ACROBATS OF THE PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC OF CHINA The National Circus and Acrobats of The People’s Republic of China were founded in 1958, and since that time the company has been dedicated to the innovation of and excellence in the circus and acrobatic art. In 1990, it again won the Gold Medal at Korea’s “Spring of April” Art Festival together the company’s other act of Hula Hoops. The act of Balance on Double Planks won the Silver Clown at the 14th Monte Carlo International Circus Festival in Monaco in

1989. The act of Aerial Silk won the Silver Medal at the 5th China Wuhan International Acrobatics Festival in 2002. In October 2003, at Second Brazilian International Acrobatics Competition, the company won the Golden Award with the act of High Chairs’ Stacking which also later won the Golden K medal in Monte Carlo at the 17th Premiere Stage International Circus Festival in February 2005. In 2006, the Balance on High Chairs received the Golden Elephant Prize at the sixth Moscow International Circus Festival. In 2012, the company again won the Golden Medal at the 2nd International Circus Festival in Spain and Silver Medal at the 6th International Festival of Circus Art in Russia. Many other acts of the troupe were also rewarded gold medals, silver medals, and other prizes at the national acrobatics and magic competitions in China. In recent years, the show productions of the company like “City of Springs” and “Peking Dreams” have been

highly praised by domestic and international audiences. Many of the company’s acrobats were employed by Cirque du Soleil to perform the Lasso in Tokyo Disney’s Cirque du Soleil Theater for more than two years and by the French Cirque’s Arlette Gruss national tour in 2014. In 2000, the company’s Grand Girl Bicycle was also performed for the Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey Circus. Representing China, the company has visited and performed in more than 50 countries and regions including Japan, the U.S., Romania, Hungary, Germany, Russia, Brazil, Singapore, Pakistan, Britain, France, Spain, South & North Korea, Indonesia, Colombia, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, among many others, making great contributions to the role of China’s national acrobatic and circus art on the international scene. The National Circus and Acrobats of the People’s Republic of China 2015 tour of North America will feature “Peking Dreams,” which features many impressive circus and acrobatic acts such as hats’ juggling, diving through rings, bicycles, feet juggling with umbrellas, unicycles, adagio of four, grand martial arts, and so on. The program also includes traditional circus acts like hula hoops, balance on high chairs, aerial silk, solo trapeze, and rope tricks (lasso) commonly featured under the circus tent. This production was performed for the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008 and has been performed for more than 600 shows in front of more than 400,000 people in China, Europe, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.

The Beatles—All Together and Solo Years
UNDERWRITTEN BY
DOUG AND DIANE GARBACK This program is made possible in part through a grant by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts.
The Fab Faux
About the Artists THE FAB FAUX With a commitment to the accurate reproduction of The Beatles’ repertoire, The Fab Faux treat the seminal music with unwavering respect, and are known for their painstaking recreations of the songs (with emphasis on the later works never performed live by The Beatles). Far beyond a cover band, they play the music of The Beatles so impeccably that one must experience it to believe it. Imagine hearing complex material like “Strawberry Fields Forever” or “I Am the Walrus” performed in complete part-perfect renditions; or such harmony-driven songs as “Because,” “Nowhere Man,” and “Paperback Writer,” reproduced not only note-for-note, but with extra vocalists to achieve a double-tracked effect. The musical virtuosity of The Fab Faux— in actuality five of the hardest working musicians in New York City—completely upends the concept of a Beatles tribute band. Far beyond being extended sets of cover versions, their astounding shows are an inspired re-discovery of The Beatles’ musical magic, as The Fab Faux tackles the group’s most demanding material live onstage. Calling them, “the greatest Beatles cover band—without the wigs,” Rolling Stone senior editor David Fricke wrote, “the Faux invigorate the artistry of even The Beatles’ most intricate studio masterpieces with top chops and Beatlemaniac glee.” Approaching the songs with the intent of playing them live as accurately in musical reading and in spirit
as possible, The Faux’s breathtaking performances tend to dispel all concertgoers’ previous notions of a Beatles tribute act. “The Fab Faux have the hardest job in the history of R & R and they pull it off damn well. All rock bands want to be like The Beatles; these guys have the nerve to BE The Beatles. Amazingly, they’re so good at it you learn new things about the originals,” said Dave Marsh, legendary Rock Critic and Sirius Radio Host. The Fab Faux are a labor of love that was born in 1998 when Will Lee (who’s played with all four Beatles), bassist for Paul Shaffer’s CBS Orchestra on The Late Show with David Letterman, decided that he was determined to organize the greatest Beatles band without any props (sans period wardrobe, fake accents, wigs) and focus on the intricacies and soul of the music. Rounding out the lineup are Jimmy Vivino, Music Director/Guitarist for Conan and longtime music partner of Levon Helm; John Sebastian; Laura Nyro; lead-singing drummer/producer Rich Pagano (Rosanne Cash, Roger Waters); guitarist Frank Agnello (Marshall Crenshaw, Phoebe Snow); and ace keyboardist/guitarist Jack Petruzzelli (Rufus Wainwright, Patti Smith). All five principals contribute vocals, making the Faux’s soaring harmonies as resonant as their multi-instrumental chops, which are further enhanced by the four-piece Hogshead Horns (with Blues Brothers, Blood, Sweat & Tears, and SNL band alums) and The Creme Tangerine Strings. The Faux’s high energy shows have generated serious buzz not only at top New York City venues including sold out shows at Ra-

dio City Music Hall and The Beacon Theater in New York City—with Beatles fans, movie stars and world class musicians in attendance—but at major dates in Los Angeles, Atlanta, Las Vegas, Park City, Utah (Sundance), Philadelphia, Boston, Chicago, and Toronto, among other locales. They’ve headlined four of Liverpool’s annual Beatle Festivals, playing before 35,000 Beatle fanatics. While in England, they had the rare honor of recording an original song at Abbey Road Studios—and also delighted the masses performing live on The Howard Stern Show and The Mark and Brian Show. Benefit and corporate dates have included events for JVC, the N.B.A., and the Michael J. Fox Parkinsons Research Foundation. TV appearances include Late Show with David Letterman and Late Night with Conan O’Brien. “It’s not just a cover band,” says the Faux’s Pagano. “This is the greatest pop music ever written and we’re such freaks for it.” Vivino adds, “It’s constant archaeology.” Imagine the instrumental complexities of “Strawberry Fields Forever” and “A Day in the Life” performed part-perfect with an orchestra. The lush, multi-layered harmonies of “Because,” and “Eleanor Rigby” sung note-for-note. The adrenaline rush of “Helter Skelter” and “Paperback Writer,” delivered spot on. “Whenever anyone saw The Beatles perform it was just the four guys,” Lee continues. “You never saw them on stage with a sitar or a string section. We have all that stuff.”

An Evening with
Sarah McLachlan
This program is made possible in part through a grant by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts.
Sarah McLachan
About the Artist SARAH MCLACHLAN Sarah McLachlan is one of the most celebrated singer songwriters in entertainment with over 40 million albums sold worldwide. She is an eight-time Juno Award-winner and a three-time Grammy® Award-winner. McLachlan’s landmark fifth album, the 10x-platinum Surfacing, contained two Grammy® Award-winning tracks, “Building a Mystery” and “Last Dance.” In addition to her personal artistic efforts, she founded the Lilith Fair tour, which showcased female musicians and raised over $7 million for local and national charities. In 2002, McLachlan
founded her non-profit organization, the Sarah McLachlan School of Music, which provides top quality music instruction at no cost, in a safe and nurturing environment, for at-risk and underserved children and youth. From an early age, music provided McLachlan with the tools she needed to navigate the challenges she faced in her life, so she recognizes how important it is for every child to have those same opportunities. Her most recent album, Shine On, explores her personal journey over the last three years navigating love, loss, and change. Shine On celebrates the human ability to grow from our experiences, thrive, and shine on.

THE PIGEONING Obsessed with cleanliness and order, Frank is also plagued by pigeons. Convinced the pigeons are plotting against him, Frank sets out on an adventure to solve a problem that perhaps isn’t really there? The Pigeoning is a darkly comedic yet heartfelt story that spins articulate puppetry, live music, and lo-fi special effects into an epic tale about the illusion of safety and control in the context of the end of the world. The Pigeoning takes a look at the divide between man and nature at time when listening to the animals may be our best bet…
ROBIN FROHARDT Known for her rich aesthetic and highly detailed constructions, Robin Frohardt is a puppet artist director and film maker living in Brooklyn, NY. She draws from her unique experience outside the theater, as a world traveler and adventurer combined with her technical craft to create work that pushes the boundaries of traditional puppet theater. After studying at the University of Washington, Frohardt moved to San Francisco where she founded the APOCALYPSE PUPPET THEATER and began working with the artist group The Cardboard Institute of Technology constructing large and detailed cardboard installations. Lured to New York to work with Swimming Cities, Frohardt spent several summers building and living about sculptural junk rafts. In New York, her focus crystallized in the creation of her first full length piece—The Pigeoning—which premiered with raving reviews in 2013 and continues to tour at home and abroad. Her work with cardboard continued in her popular short film FITZCARDBOARDALDO which was an official selection at several film festivals in 2013. She is presently a puppeteer in the upcoming Spring Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall. She will be teaching a course in puppetry at the University of Maryland in the fall of 2015.
The Pigeoning was originally developed through the HERE Artist Residency Program (HARP) and the Dream Music Puppetry Program over the course of two years, appearing as a work-in-process in HERE’s annual Culturemart festival in February 2013. The production made its New York premiere at HERE in December 2013 as part of HERE’s 2013-2014 producing season, following a world premiere at the Pittsburgh International Festival of Firsts (October 2013) which had provided final residency support. Prior to being named a HERE Resident Artist in 2012, Robin Frohardt work shopped the first act of The Pigeoning at St. Ann’s Warehouse Puppet Lab. Most recently, The Pigeoning was honored with the 2014 Arlyn Award for Outstanding Design in Puppet Theatre, with the jury noting, “The design is simple and effective, cleverly creating a magical world from

Robert Irvine LIVE
About the Artist
er, being able to help people is what drives me” says Irvine
ROBERT IRVINE Chef Robert Irvine has no prior knowledge of the challenges he will face tonight. He has not seen the possible ingredients or met the members of the audience. Anything can happen. No recipes. No script. No holds barred.
From helping families survive the stress of a failing restaurant on Restaurant: Impossible to honoring our service members for the service to our country, Irvine believes one of the greatest things he can do with his success is to give back to those in need of a little guidance or to those who make sacrifices for us to enjoy our freedom. From cooking aboard aircraft carriers to visiting the troops at overseas bases (often in war zones) to some of his most recent travels cooking for several thousand wounded warriors and their families, he says these experiences define how a well-cooked meal can bring us together.
Welcome to Robert Irvine LIVE. There aren’t many places Robert Irvine hasn’t cooked or challenges he hasn’t had to cook his way out of. Irvine grew up in the working town of Salisbury in Wiltshire, England. When he was 15 he joined the British Royal Navy and spent the following ten years touring Europe aboard various naval ships including Her Majesty’s Royal Yacht Britannia. Although his desire to be a cook started a few years before that— he admits home economics was a great way to meet girls—it was during his time in the Royal Navy that he began to explore and develop his culinary skills. After the Royal Navy, Irvine continued to expand his culinary skills working in hotels, casinos, and aboard cruise ships. Each assignment gave him an opportunity to learn more about marrying ingredients and the art of food preparation. Irvine earned the privilege of being the executive chef for many great establishments including the MS Crystal Harmony and Trump’s Taj Mahal. “I’ve been very grateful of those relationships. Many of them have opened doors to some of the most unforgettable moments in my life; from serving as a consultant for the US Navy to my start in television,” says Irvine. It all started with a TV show very few have heard of called Fit for a King. Fit for a King was the pitch to Food Network that, after a few changes, became known as Dinner: Impossible. Irvine and the team filmed nearly 100 episodes of Dinner: Impossible. Each week presented a new and different challenge. The locations ranged from a deserted island to a hotel made of ice and beyond. Irvine found himself preparing dinner for groups of thousands, from construction workers, athletes, weddings, marines, and even a governor’s inauguration dinner. “I have a passion for cooking. I believe enjoying a good meal brings people together. Howev-
Recently Robert was recognized for his commitment to our military by being named an Honorary Chief Petty Officer of the Navy, and was awarded the Bob Hope Award for Excellent in Entertainment by the Congressional Medal of Honor Society. He launched the Robert Irvine Foundation, a non-profit 501c3 organization whose mission is to support individuals and organizations committed to enriching the lives of our heroes and their families. Another passion of Irvine’s is fitness. He was once named one of the 25 Fittest Guys in America by Men’s Fitness magazine. Fitness and proper nutrition go hand-in-hand for living a healthy lifestyle. Despite spending more than 340 days on the road, he makes fitness a priority. He launched Fit Crunch™ baked protein bars and recently released a fitness and nutrition book FIT FUEL. Irvine’s goal is simple: He wants to empower people, through food and fitness, to thrive each day. He passionately believes a little bit of fitness and a healthy meal is the foundation for taking on any challenge that may come up in a day. Not every challenge can be solved in 36 hours with $10,000.Those are the challenges that Irvine looks forward to solving the most.

Dave Koz and Friends
About the Artist DAVE KOZ Multi-Grammy® nominee and saxophonist extraordinaire Dave Koz returns with the must-see show of the holiday season.“By all rights, smooth jazz should own the holiday season, and the saxophonist Dave Koz is better positioned than anyone to make it so,” said in a review of his latest Christmas album. Dave’s high-energy shows have made him synonymous with the season, with the saying, “Dave Koz = Christmas” and christening him “Santa Koz.” The 2015 Dave Koz and Friends Christmas tour will feature Dave along with three special guests. Koz will be joined by two tour “alumni”—the irrepressible Jonathan Butler, who has earned accolades in the R&B, contemporary jazz, and gospel fields, and Dutch saxophone star Candy Dulfer, who was introduced with the smash pop single “Lily Was Here” and has since released 10 studio albums and performed with such artists as Prince, Dave Stewart, and Lionel Ritchie— and the legendary Bill Medley, who will be touring with Koz for the first time. Medley, who co-founded The Righteous Brothers with Bobby Hatfield, has released 14 solo albums. Together, the four musicians will put fresh spins on holiday classics as well as other selections that beautifully capture the spirit of the season.

Home Alone In Concert
COMPOSER’S NOTE
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Ever since Home Alone appeared, it has held a unique place in the affections of a very broad public. Director Chris Columbus brought a uniquely fresh and innocent approach to this delightful story, and the film has deservedly become a perennial at holiday time. I took great pleasure in composing the score for the film, and I am especially delighted that the magnificent New Jersey Symphony Orchestra has agreed to perform the music in a live presentation of the movie. I know I speak for everyone connected with the making of the film in saying that we are greatly honored by this event…and I hope that this weekend’s audiences will experience the renewal of joy that the film brings with it, each and every year. John Williams
In a career spanning five decades, JOHN WILLIAMS has become one of America’s most accomplished and successful composers for both film and the concert stage, and he remains one of our nation’s most distinguished and contributive musical voices. He has composed the music and served as music director for more than 100 films, including all seven Star Wars films, the first three Harry Potter films, Superman, JFK, Born on the Fourth of July, Memoirs of a Geisha, Far and Away, The Accidental Tourist, Home Alone, and The Book Thief. His 40-year artistic partnership with director Steven Spielberg has resulted in many of Hollywood’s most acclaimed and successful films, including Schindler’s List, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Jaws, Jurassic Park, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, the Indiana Jones films, Munich, Saving Private Ryan, The Adventures of Tintin, War Horse, and Lincoln. His contributions include scores for more than 200 television films, and he also composed themes for the 1984, 1988, and 1996 Summer Olympic Games and 2002 Winter Olympic Games. Williams has received five Academy Awards® and 49 Oscar® nominations, making him the Academy’s most-nominated living person and the second-most nominated person in the history of the Oscars®. He received the prestigious Kennedy Center Honor in December of 2004. In 2009, he was inducted into the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, and he received the National Medal of Arts, the highest award given to artists by the US government. In January 1980, Williams was named 19th music director of the Boston Pops Orchestra, succeeding the legendary Arthur Fiedler. He currently holds the title of Boston Pops Laureate Conductor, a post he assumed following his retirement in December 1993. He also holds the title of Artist-in-Residence at Tanglewood. CONSTANTINE KITSOPOULOS has made a name for himself as a conductor whose musical experiences comfortably span the worlds of opera, symphony and film, conducting in such venues as Carnegie Hall, Avery Fisher Hall and Royal Albert Hall, as well as leading orchestras in musical theater productions on Broadway.

Most recently he was music director and conductor of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella on Broadway. His most recent recording is the Grammy® Award-winning original Broadway cast album of the Tony® Award-winning Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess, released in 2012 on P.S. Classics. The NEW JERSEY YOUTH CHORUS, founded in 1992 by Trish Joyce, is an auditioned choral program for children in grades two through 12, divided into five ensembles. Two-hundred and fifty choristers come from six counties of New Jersey. The heart of its mission is to provide exceptional choral music education and performance experiences, fostering expression, artistry and growth. The chorus performs frequently with professional ensembles and performers, including the NJSO, Canadian Brass, The Chieftains, Ronan Tynan, and others. The choir performed with Queen Latifah at Super Bowl XLVIII in 2014. The choir has been featured at the American Choral Directors Association’s Eastern Division Conference and Chorus America’s 2009 Conference. The chorus has participated in numerous national and international music festivals, and it regularly hosts visiting youth choirs. Music educator workshops are a regular part of the chorus’ offerings. The choir’s “Kids for Kids” mission includes opportunities to perform and assist children’s organizations and charities. The choir is donating proceeds from its CD, “Stand Together, Music of Hope and Healing,” to cancer patients at area hospitals. TRISH JOYCE has taught at Westminster Choir College and Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University, and has served on the NJ American Choral Directors Association’s Board. She also presents workshops for music educators, is a clinician for choral festivals, and
is a freelance organist. These performances feature two of NJYC’s ensembles: Coriste, under Trish Joyce, and Camerata, under Matt LaPine. More information is available at www.njyouthchorus.org. NEW JERSEY SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA Named “a vital, artistically significant musical organization” by The Wall Street Journal, the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra embodies that vitality through its statewide presence and critically acclaimed performances, education partnerships, and unparalleled access to music and the Orchestra’s superb musicians. Under the bold leadership of Music Director Jacques Lacombe, the NJSO presents classical, pops, and family programs, as well as outdoor summer concerts and special events. Embracing its legacy as a statewide orchestra, the NJSO is the resident orchestra of the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark and regularly performs at the State Theatre in New Brunswick, Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank, Richardson Auditorium in Princeton, Mayo Performing Arts Center in Morristown, and bergenPAC in Englewood. Partnerships with New Jersey arts organizations, universities, and civic organizations remain a key element of the Orchestra’s statewide identity. In addition to its lauded artistic programming, the NJSO presents a suite of education and community engagement programs that promote meaningful, lifelong engagement with live music. Programs include the three-ensemble NJSO Youth Orchestras, school-time Concerts for Young People performances, and multiple offerings—including the El Sistema-inspired NJSO CHAMPS (Character, Achievement, and Music Project)—that provide and promote inschool instrumental instruction as part of the NJSO Academy. The NJSO’s REACH (Resources for Education and Community Harmony) chamber music program annually brings original programs—designed and performed by NJSO musicians—to a variety of settings, reaching as many as 17,000 people in nearly all of New Jersey’s 21 counties. The New Jersey Symphony Orchestra’s programs are made possible in part by The New Jersey State Council on the Arts, along with many other foundations, corporations and individual donors.

Punch Brothers
This program is made possible in part through a grant by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts.
Punch Brothers
About the Artist PUNCH BROTHERS Punch Brothers’ fourth Nonesuch album, the T Bone Burnett–produced The Phosphorescent Blues, addresses with straight-up poignancy and subversive humor the power and the pitfalls of our super-connected era. Digitally fueled isolation may be a theme, but this virtuosic acoustic quintet offers its warmest, most emotive and elegantly melodic work to date—so invitingly human in its approach that it practically ushers the listener into the room as these guys assemble in front of a mic. Indeed, a longing for community and connection was both impetus and inspiration for this disc. Never a group that could be accused of taking it easy, Punch Brothers had been touring almost non-stop since the majority of them first got together to support mandolin player Chris Thile’s 2006 solo album, How to Grow a Woman From the Ground. But in February 2013, after supporting the 2012 disc Who’s Feeling Young Now?—an album in which, a New York Times reviewer opined, the band “shifted the emphasis from instrumental wizardry to playful storytelling”—Punch Bothers decided to scale back the concert schedule allowing themselves the chance to interact musically and personally, away from tour buses and dressing rooms. The Phosphorescent Blues is, in many ways, a slice of modern life, says Thile. Shortly before the sessions began, Thile and Witcher met with Burnett and discovered the producer had the very same things on his mind. In fact, he’d just given a commencement address at the University of Southern California on the subject of technology and human interaction. Witcher remembers, “Thile and I looked at each and said, ‘This is unbelievable. It’s exactly what we are writing about.’ So this was a perfect, serendipitous union.” That union was also a long time coming. Burnett had previously enlisted Punch Brothers to contribute music to the Hunger Games soundtrack he produced. They performed an even greater role on the soundtrack to the Coen Brothers’ Inside Llewyn Davis, and served as the “house band” for the star-studded Another Day, Another Time concert Burnett organized at NYC’s Town Hall in September 2013. Having Burnett
at the helm of these Punch Brothers sessions was a revelatory experience, even for musicians already so finely attuned to each other. In this setting, Thile delivered what are arguably the most expressive vocals of his career, on songs like “Julep” and “Forgotten,” bolstered by harmonies that the Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson would approve of. “Singing while T Bone was in the control room, I felt what it was like for an actor to work with a great director. He would find ways to get me into my own lyrics. He might come at things with some observation about the lyric that would allow me to sing it not just as me but as a whole lot of people.” Burnett himself added a discreet amount of electric guitar, most noticeably on “I Blew It Off,” and even convinced the band to add percussion on some tracks, a first for a Punch Brothers disc—integrated so artfully into the mix by drummer Jay Bellerose that one has to listen twice to even know it’s there. On “Forgotten” and “My Oh My,” Witcher could overdub himself into an entire string section. Final track “Little Lights” sums up The Phosphorescent Blues, a single-take recording that imagines countless smart phones held in the air as a symbol of hope and possibility, a 21st century twist on “This Little Light Of Mine.” At its climax, the band is actually joined by a digital choir of its fans. The band had tried overdubbing their own voices, but that sounded contrived. Then one night, while driving home in L.A., Witcher had a brainstorm: If they didn’t have the resources to assemble a choir in the studio, why not reach out directly to fans, via Twitter and their website, to add their voices? Eldridge reveals, “We received over a thousand submissions. It wasn’t about people singing well or badly; we just wanted everyone in there.” “Little Lights” becomes a fitting, and genuinely uplifting, conclusion to The Phosphorescent Blues, as Punch Brothers address the questions they’ve posed about technology by conjuring up, in the course of the song, a very real virtual community. They used all the digital tools they had on hand, but it ultimately came together in a more familiar way, via words and music and voices.

About the Artist MATISYAHU In celebration of the 10th anniversary of his breakthrough album, Live at Stubb’s, Matisyahu has taken a new look at the music that first made his reputation in Live at Stubb’s III: A 10-Year Journey. Kenny Rogers Once Again It’s Christmas featuring Linda Davis
This program is made possible in part through a grant by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts.
Kenny Rogers
About the Artist
(including Vince Gill on guitar) make an appearance.
KENNY ROGERS Grammy® Award-winning Country Music Hall of Fame member and one of the best-selling music artists of all time, Kenny Rogers has announced he will begin a farewell tour after more than five decades on the road. His 34th annual Christmas & Hits Tour, which continues this winter as the Once Again It’s Christmas Tour featuring Linda Davis, will be one of his last, making even more special his performances of holiday favorites, selections from his new Christmas album, and No. 1 hits at 32 concerts across the U.S. and Canada.
“Christmas is my favorite time of year… especially now that I have twin boys who just turned 11 years old. It’s reminded me of how you see it through different eyes when you’re a parent. It’s wonderful,” Rogers said.
Rogers recently released his first new Christmas studio album in 17 years called Once Again It’s Christmas. The festive set includes special guest stars Alison Krauss, Jennifer Nettles, Home Free, Jim Brickman, and Winfield’s Locket, and on the exclusive Cracker Barrel edition, The Time Jumpers
The past several years have been some of the most active, creative, and rewarding of Rogers’ entire storied career. He’s been keeping busy in the studio, as Once Again It’s Christmas is Rogers’ third full studio release of all new recordings since 2011. In 2014, Rogers received his latest Grammy® nomination with Dolly Parton for “You Can’t Make Old Friends,” and in 2014 and 2015, Rogers’ career was showcased in a year-long exhibit at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. In 2013, Rogers was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame and received the Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award at the 47th Annual CMA Awards. Some of Rogers’ recent festival appearances include Great Britain’s Glastonbury, Tennessee’s Bonnaroo, and Morocco’s Festival Timitar, where he played to hundreds of thousands. He performed a Farewell Down Under Tour in Australia and New Zealand, and a Farewell South Africa Tour in 2015. Rogers has proven his long-lasting universal appeal, having sold more than 120 million albums worldwide. Incredibly, he has charted a record within each of the last seven decades. The first country artist to consistently sell out arenas, Rogers quickly became a pop superstar as well—his 28 Billboard Adult Contemporary Top 10s rank him fourth-best of all time among men, trailing only Elton John, Neil Diamond, and Elvis Presley. Rogers has recorded 24 No. 1 hits, 12 No. 1 albums, 25 Top 10 country albums and is the RIAA’s eighth best-selling male solo artist of all time. He has received three Grammy® Awards, 19 American Music Awards, 11 People’s Choice Awards, eight Academy of Country Music Awards, and six Country Music Association Awards. He has been the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award
Thu, December 10, 2015 at 8pm
from the International Entertainment Buyers Association, the Cliffie Stone Pioneer Award from the Academy of Country Music, and the Horatio Alger Award, given to those who have distinguished themselves despite humble beginnings. Rogers remains an enduring artist with a distinctive voice and a gift for storytelling who still loves to record and tour. His chart-topping songs spanning seven decades and multiple genres include “The Gambler,” “Coward of the County,” “Lucille,” “Ruby, Don’t Take Your Love to Town,” “Lady,” “She Believes in Me,” “Islands in the Stream,” “We’ve Got Tonight,” “Daytime Lovers,” “You Decorated My Life,” “Through The Years,” “Crazy,” “I Don’t Need You,” “Love Will Turn You Around,” “Morning Desire,” “Every Time Two Fools Collide,” “Buy Me A Rose,” and many more.
LINDA DAVIS Grammy® Award-winning vocalist Linda Davis has played to sold-out crowds with the likes of Garth Brooks, George Strait, Reba McEntire, and Kenny Rogers just to name a few. Upon being signed to CBS/Epic Records, Davis quickly gained a legion of friends and fans in the music industry, one being McEntire. Their mutual respect led them into the studio together where they recorded a duet entitled “Does He Love You” that went on to become a #1 hit and earned both artists several awards, including a Grammy® Award for Best Country Vocal Collaboration. In 2009, Linda was inducted into the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame.
