STAR POWER AT THE STATE The long and colorful story of State Theatre New Jersey begins at the dawn of the roaring 20s... “On Monday afternoon at two-thirty I will have both the honor and pleasure of presenting to the citizens of the City of New Brunswick and surrounding territory what I consider the finest theatre in the State.” So declared theater manager Walter Reade in an announcement in the Daily Home News of December 20, 1921, as he proudly launched the State Theatre into the cultural life of central New Jersey.

A HISTORY

Since that day the roster of performers that have graced the State Theatre’s stage reads like a “Who’s Who” of the entertainment industry. In the early years, stars included actor Bela Lugosi, best known for his role as Count Dracula; comedian and Grand Ole Opry regular Minnie Pearl; legendary Hollywood hero Gary Cooper; and actress Barbara Stanwyck, a favorite of director Cecil B. DeMille. Other prominent artists during this time included the multi-talented comedian and actor, Bob Hope; renowned opera singer Helen Traubel; and famed magician of the 20th century, The Great Blackstone. From the 1940s to the 1960s, the State Theatre continued to present a mix of movie screenings and live performances including rock and roll star Chubby Checker. And for a brief time in the late 1950s the State Theatre was owned by Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz when the couple’s company Desilu Productions acquired RKO and its venues, which included the State Theatre. Reopening as a performing arts center in 1988, the list of stars has continued to grow. George Carlin taped an HBO special, Pat Metheny shot a VH1 video, and Benny Carter won a a Grammy® for a live album—all recorded at the State Theatre. Other artists include Ray Charles, Ringo Starr, Loretta Lynn, Maya Angelou, Bruce Springstreen, Gregory Hines, Johnny Cash, Tony Bennett, Carol Burnett, Tito Puente, Harry Connick Jr., Rita Moreno, and Aretha Franklin. 4U: A SYMPHONIC CELEBRATION OF PRINCE

ABOUT THE SHOW April 21, 2016 will live in infamy as the day we lost a genius, an icon, a legend. Prince is widely regarded as one of the best musicians ever to live, and one of the greatest showmen of all time. His music makes up the soundtracks of our lives—from the parties of our youth to our weddings; and we share his music with our children who repeat the cycle. Great music lives on forever, and, it’s with this in mind that we introduce 4U: A Symphonic Celebration of Prince. The first and only estate-approved Prince celebration, 4U will present the music of Prince like never before, with a full symphony orchestra. Throughout the course of the evening Prince’s extensive musical catalog will be represented. We’ll hear his greatest hits as well as some of his lesser known gems in this musical celebration. They became notable in the 1980s for their video for “I Ran (So Far Away).” WANG CHUNG Wang Chung is an English new wave musical group formed in 1980. BOW WOW WOW (Annabella Lwin) Annabella Lwin is the original vocalist of Bow Wow Wow, an English 1980s new wave band, created by Malcolm McLaren. The group’s music has been described as new wave, pop, and worldbeat, characterized by an “African-derived drum sound.” In 1980, McLaren persuaded guitarist Matthew Ashman, drummer David Barbarossa, and bassist Leigh Gorman, all then members of Adam and the Ants, to leave the founder of the band, Adam Ant, and form a new group. After a six-month audition process for a lead singer, the band enlisted 13-year-old Annabella Lwin. The band’s biggest U.S. hit was “I Want Candy,” which also appeared in film soundtracks and media and advertising events such as the 2005 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.

BROOKLYN PARAMOUNT REUNION JUBILEE OF STARS

ABOUT THE ARTISTS CH A R L I E T HOM A S’ DR I F T E R S Originated in Harlem, the Drifters have had 30 Top 40 hit records, are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, The Vocal Group Hall of Fame, The Doo Wop Hall of Fame, and The Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame. The Drifters started in 1953 and had several lead singers, including Clyde McPhatter and Ben E. King. Charlie Thomas has been with The Drifters for the longest period of time and sang on more hits than any other member. Thomas is the last original recording member still living (he is celebrating his 60 th year with the Drifters), and his on-stage performances continue to impress. Top hits include “There Goes My Baby,” “Save the Last Dance for Me,” ”Up on the Roof,” “On Broadway,” and “Under the Boardwalk.” L EON H UGH ES OF T H E OR IGI NA L COA ST E R S This west coast group had hits in the late 1950s, including “Searchin’” and “Young Blood.” Many of their most memorable songs were written by the songwriting and producing team of Leiber and Stoller. In 1987, they were the first group inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and can be found in the Vocal Group Hall of Fame and Doo Wop Hall of Fame as well. Leon Hughes is the last surviving member of the original Coasters, his other hits include “Yakety Yak” (#1 hit), “Charlie Brown,” “Along Came Jones,” “Poison Ivy,” and “Little Egypt.” T E R RY JOH NSON’S F L A M I NG OS Originating from Chicago, the Flamingos are members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, The Vocal Group Hall of Fame, and the Doo Wop Hall of Fame. They were a favorite of Alan Freed who featured them in countless concerts and in two movies. Billboard Magazine said, “the Flamingos defined doo wop at its most elegant and sophisticated…” Their biggest hit was 1959’s “I Only Have Eyes for You,” and other hits were “Lovers Never Say Goodbye,” “Mio Amore,” and “Nobody Loves Me Like You,” written for them by Sam Cooke. The Flamingos were pioneers with amazing harmonies and choreography, and have inspired groups like The Temptations. 34

T H E CH A N T E L S Formed in 1957 by Bronx high school classmates, the Chantels were one of Rock and Roll’s first girl groups. Their first single was “He’s Gone,” and their second record, “Maybe,” was a million selling gold record. Since there were few female groups at the time, and because audiences loved The Chantels, Alan Freed featured them frequently at the Paramount and on nationwide bus tours. The group was also inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame and the Doo Wop Hall of Fame. T H E BE L MON TS Named after Belmont Avenue in the Bronx where two of the four singers lived, the Belmonts are a leading doo wop group of their time. From 1958 to 1960, their eight Top 40 singles resulted in several television performances and frequent use in Alan Freed’s stage shows at the Brooklyn Paramount. Their hits included “I Wonder Why,” “No One Knows,” and Top 5 hits “A Teenager in Love” and “Where or When.” Angelo D’Aleo, the group’s last surviving member, will lead the Belmonts on stage. J.T. C A RT E R OF T H E OR IGI NA L CR ESTS Formed in Manhattan by J.T. Carter in 1954, The Crests have had several hits in the late 1950s and early 1960s, including “16 Candles” (#2 on the Hot 100, staying on the charts for 21 weeks), “Step By Step,” “The Angels Listened In,” and “Trouble in Paradise.” The Crests were the first interracially mixed Doo Wop group, consisting of three African Americans (one female), one Puerto Rican, and one Italian American. They were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame and The Doo Wop Hall of Fame. J. T. Carter is the original group’s lone survivor and the group he will lead onto the stage features 18-yearold lead singer Peter Lemongello, Jr., who appeared on the new PBS Special, Doo Wop Generations. J.T. Carter and The Crests have withstood the test of time and continue to bring joy to generations of loyal and new fans.

She is a young ventriloquist who is inspiring the next generation to keep it alive. Darci Lynne is someone to watch for as her career is just getting started. But in her mind, positively affecting one person through her performances is all she desires. Growing up in Oklahoma, Darci Lynne has always been close to her family and relies on their support and encouragement. In her younger years, she had a timid demeanor that she was able to overcome through talent-based pageants. She was soon introduced to the art of ventriloquism and decided to try it out for herself. Darci Lynne had hard work, grit, and discipline already instilled in her, since she came from a gymnastics background where she practiced 30 hours a week. After only having her first puppet for two weeks, Darci Lynne was determined to audition for

her first talent show never knowing it would lead her to audition for the biggest talent show on earth. Now being on stage makes her feel like she is an entirely new person. This is where she opens up and flourishes. Darci Lynne dazzles the audience, leaving them with smiles on their faces. Performing has helped Darci Lynne learn about herself and who she can be. She is so grateful to her mentor Gary Owen and her vocal coach Tiana Plemons for all they have done for her. During her America’s Got Talent audition she received the golden buzzer sending her straight to the Quarterfinals. Her winning final performance has over 21 million views on AGT’s YouTube, more than any other finals performance on the show. Darci Lynne will be touring into next year and hopes to continue to uplift people as they watch her.

COLIN MOCHRIE AND BRAD SHERWOOD

ABOUT THE ARTISTS COLIN MOCHRIE Colin Mochrie returns for a fifth season on the CW to the hysterical improvisation show Whose Line Is It Anyway?, along with host Aisha Tyler and fellow stars Wayne Brady and Ryan Stiles, who put their comedic skills to the test through a series of spontaneous improvisation games. Mochrie is an alumnus of Toronto’s famous Second City comedy troupe and is widely considered to be one of the leading improvisers in the world. After nine years as a regular on the British improvisation series Whose Line Is It Anyway?, he became a regular on the American version hosted by Drew Carey, which ran for six years on ABC, and three years on ABC Family. In 2011, the entire cast was reunited in Las Vegas for Drew Carey’s Improv-A-Ganza. Mochrie appears regularly in film and television and

48

was notably a cast member of CBC’s classic news spoof This Hour Has 22 Minutes for two seasons. With his wife, Debra McGrath,

he produced, wrote, and starred in the CBC show Getting Along Famously. A native of Scotland but life-long resident of Canada, Mochrie has remarkably toured worldwide for over a decade, with Whose Line Is It Anyway? castmate Brad Sherwood, performing a live improvisation show. An Evening with Colin and Brad has the distinction of being one of the longest running comedy tours in history. Their current two-man improvisation show is Colin Mochrie & Brad Sherwood: The Scared Scriptless Tour. In 2012, ABC aired Trust Us With Your Life, produced by the makers of Whose Line Is It Anyway? and co-starring Mochrie, Brady, and many of his former Whose Line Is It Anyway? cast members. The show was hosted by Fred Willard. In the past, Mochrie’s writing for television, stage, and magazines has garnered awards. His first book of fiction, Not Quite the Classics, in which he uses the first and last lines of familiar classics as a launching and landing point and re-imagines everything in between, was released by Viking, a publishing arm of Penguin Canada, in October 2013. BRAD SHERWOOD Brad Sherwood is one of the greatest living American improvisers and loves writing about himself in the third person. He is best known for his 13 seasons as a series regular on the EmmyŽ-nominated Whose Line Is It Anyway?. His most recent television appearance was in 2017 on the fifth season of Whose Line Is It Anyway? which aired on the CW network. His other credits include The Drew Carey Show, Talk Soup, The Newz, Improv-a-ganza, The Green Screen Show, This Vs. That, The Dating Game, LA Law, and The Tonight Show. Sherwood is currently touring the world in the critically acclaimed, live, two-man improvisation show Colin Mochrie and Brad Sherwood: Scared Scriptless.

LORD OF THE DANCE: DANGEROUS GAMES

THE STORY

ABOUT THE SHOW

The Lord of the Dance story emerges from the dreams of the Little Spirit. It is a classic tale of good versus evil. In her dream the Lord of the Dance represents all things good in the world, but he must fight against evil in the form of The Dark Lord and his army of Dark Disciples.

Lord of the Dance premiered at the magnificent Coliseum in London two decades ago, and in 2014 Michael Flatley transformed the show making it even more thrilling than the original. With music composed by Gerard Fahy, Lord of the Dance: Dangerous Games premiered at the iconic London Palladium in September 2014 to mark the milestone 20th anniversary since Michael Flatley became an international sensation. The show has since gone on to enjoy hugely successful runs in the West End, Broadway, the U.S., Canada, Ireland, Germany, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, and Mexico. Lord of the Dance: Dangerous Games continues to thrill audiences around the globe with its intoxicating mix of dance and music that fuses the traditional with the contemporary in a classic tale that showcases the exceptional talent of the cast. The show features cutting edge technology including a giant Radiant flat screen that spans the width of the stage, special effects lighting, dancing robots, and world champion acrobats.

Morrighan the Seductress comes between The Lord and his true love Saoirse, while Erin the Goddess puts into song the words that the dances convey. Will the Lord of the Dance and his chieftains defeat the Dark Lord and his men? Will the Spirit’s Dream become a nightmare from which she cannot wake? Let the dance embrace you and take you on a journey filled with energy and passion‌

TUE, OCTOBER 9, 2018 AT 8PM

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR Michael Flatley is an accomplished dancer, flutist, actor, director, and producer. He first stepped onto the world stage in 1994 when he created Riverdance, a dance performance that caught the attention of millions around the world. Over the past two decades he has created, directed, produced and starred in several other successful shows including Lord of the Dance, Feet of Flames, Celtic Tiger and his latest show Lord of the Dance: Dangerous Games, which he took to London’s West End and Broadway. Over the past 20 years his Lord of the Dance show has broken box office records all over the world. In 1998 the show had a record breaking run of 21 consecutive soldout shows at London’s legendary Wembley Arena. It is a record that still stands to this day. Worldwide video sales are in excess of 12 million copies. He has taken his shows to football stadia in Europe and Asia, performing live to audiences of 120,000. Lord of the Dance was captured in ground breaking 3D at the O2

arenas in Dublin, London, and Berlin and was released in theatres across Europe and the U.S. in 2011. After a final stage performance at Caesar’s Palace, Las Vegas in 2016, Flatley has turned his focus full-time to his other passions. He is a contemporary artist and his works of abstract expressionism have been lauded by critics as “striking.” In 2015 his paintings officially became the highest valued artworks sold at auction in Ireland for that year. His other lifelong creative passion is filmmaking. Flatley has written, directed, and starred in two short films and his next project is a feature length film that was in production in 2017.
