B.B. King

About the Artist B.B. KING For more than half a century, Riley B. King—better known as B.B. King—has defined the blues for a worldwide audience. Since he started recording in the 1940s, he has released over 50 albums, many of them classics. King’s first big break came in 1948 when he performed on Sonny Boy Williamson’s radio program on KWEM out of West Memphis. This led to steady engagements at the Sixteenth Avenue Grill in West Memphis, and later to a ten-minute spot on black-staffed and managed Memphis radio station WDIA. “King’s Spot,” became so popular, it was expanded and became the “Sepia Swing Club.” Soon King needed a catchy radio name. What started out as Beale Street Blues Boy was shortened to Blues Boy King, and eventually B.B. King. In the mid-1950s, while King was performing at a dance in Twist, Arkansas, a few fans became unruly. Two men got into a fight and knocked over a kerosene stove, setting fire to the hall. King raced outdoors to safety with everyone else, then realized that he left his beloved $30 acoustic guitar inside, so he rushed back inside the burning building to retrieve it, narrowly escaping death. When he later found out that the fight had been over a woman named Lucille, he decided to give the name to his guitar to remind him never to do

a crazy thing like fight over a woman. Ever since, each one of King’s trademark Gibson guitars has been called Lucille. Over the years, King has developed one of the world’s most identifiable guitar styles. He borrowed from Blind Lemon Jefferson, T-Bone Walker, and others, integrating his precise and complex vocal-like string bends and his left hand vibrato, both of which have become indispensable components of rock guitarist’s vocabulary. His economy, his every-note-counts phrasing, has been a model for thousands of players, from Eric Clapton and George Harrison to Jeff Beck. King has mixed traditional blues, jazz, swing, mainstream pop, and jump into a unique sound. In King’s words, “When I sing, I play in my mind; the minute I stop singing orally, I start to sing by playing Lucille.” King was inducted into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame in 1984 and into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. He received NARAS’ Lifetime Achievement Grammy® Award in 1987, and has received honorary doctorates from Tougaloo (MS) College in 1973; Yale University in 1977; Berklee College of Music in 1982; Rhodes College of Memphis in 1990; Mississippi Valley State University in 2002 and Brown University in 2007. In 1992, he received the National Award of Distinction from the University of Mississippi.

Notes on the Program Lotus Overture By Guo Wenjing The lotus (pronounced “Lianhua” in Chinese) is a plant that is often used to represent sacredness, chasteness, resurrection, gracefulness, and the sun. Many early civilizations— those of Egypt and China, for example—regard the lotus as a holy symbol, and incorporate its image in their art and architecture. Lotus blossoms open and close following the sun; in Ancient Egypt, people believed that the sun rose from a lotus in the east at dawn and set into a lotus in the west at nightfall. In Asia, the lotus is one of the four great auspicious flowers and eight treasures, as well as one of nine great symbols in Buddhism. Buddha and Bodhisattvassit on lotus seats, hold lotuses, stand on lotuses, make lotus gestures, or cast lotuses to the human world. The spirits, sitting or standing with dignity on lotus seats, indicate this flower’s divine origin. In China, the cultural meaning of the lotus reflects the ideal personality: born in mud, but not stained; washed by clear ripples, but not coquettish (quoted from the essay On the Love of the Lotus, by Zhou Dunyi, a famous Chinese neo-Confucian philosopher and cosmologist of the Song Dynasty). In numerous poems, songs, and essays, the lotus is depicted as a symbol of friendship as well as a messenger. Lotus Overture, named after this sacred, auspicious flower, was sent as a symbol of best wishes from me, the musicians of the Beijing Symphony Orchestra, and Conductor Tan

Lihua on the occasion of the London 2012 Olympic Games. Chou Kong Shan: Concerto for bamboo flutes and orchestra, Op.18 By Guo Wenjing Chinese composers have been combining traditional solo instruments with orchestra for more than three decades. Of all the works in this genre, Chou Kong Shan (translated as Sorrowful Desolate Mountain) is among the most successful. Guo Wenjing employs a number of recurring thematic ideas in his compositions, inspired by such disparate concepts as the mountain,Tibet, legend, and traditional opera; Chou Kong Shan is one of those relating to the idea of the mountain. This piece demonstrates clearly that the bamboo flute, an instrument traditionally associated with joyful celebration and lively dance, can also be used to create dramatic tension and true pathos.

Greeting from Tan Lihua Dear Audience and Friends from New Jersey, The acclaimed Beijing Symphony Orchestra (BSO) has a long-standing tradition of touring, having traveled to Europe no fewer than six times between 2001 and 2012. Poised to embark on its seventh European trip and its first to North America (in September and October respectively), the orchestra will perform in Austria, Switzerland, and the Czech Republic before traveling to the United States and Mexico. The BSO is alive with creative energy and enthusiasm for its premier tour to North America. Destinations include Stern Auditorium at Carnegie Hall, NYC; Strathmore Music Center, Washington, DC; State Theatre, New Brunswick, NJ; and the Cervantino Festival, Guanajuato, Mexico. The orchestra is honored to bring its best wishes from China to America and Mexico—nations that enjoy their own diverse, colorful and vibrant cultures. As a group involved in and dedicated to the musical culture of China’s capital city, Beijing, the BSO has evolved in accordance with the pace of China’s reform and opening-up. Thus, with its high professional standards and a deep passion for the art of music, the BSO has set

the pace for the growth and development of Classical music in China. The orchestra has also been very attentive to the rhythms, pace and themes in the international world of classical music over the past 35 years. On July 29, 2012, the Beijing Symphony Orchestra, as an envoy of the Olympic host city (Beijing), and representing the musical spirit of China, joined forces with the London Philharmonic Orchestra for a special gala concert at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall. The two orchestras, comprising over 220 musicians, performed Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 and Lotus Overture by Guo Wenjing. The latter work was written specifically as a message of goodwill from China to London in honor of the 2012 Olympic Games, and was a highlight of the London Olympic Festival. As the most universal human language, music plays a very significant role in the cultural and social history of the world. As envoys of musical culture, in the name of peace, and for the sake of the capital of China, the BSO is proud and honored to carry this mantle. Many years ago, Asian peoples migrated to North America with dreams of expanding their opportunities and finding a new life. Today, the BSO is preparing to embark on another mission to the New World—sharing works of Western classical and Chinese contemporary symphonic music with its audiences, sincere in the hope that the spirit of harmony in music will take root and grow as a result of this landmark tour. In the years since China opened its doors to the world, many outstanding international orchestras and musicians have visited. In the same way, China has brought its unique, contemporary voice to the world stage through meaningful cultural outreach and exchange. The BSO strives to be an embodiment of harmony, peace, and progress, as it reaches out to new audiences around the globe. During its first North American tour, the BSO will perform two important pieces of newer Chinese composition: Lotus Overture and the Chinese flute concerto, Chou Kong Shan (Sorrowful Desolate Mountain), by Guo Wenjing. Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet Suite is

also featured. This program promises to be a remarkable, unique, and memorable balance of the finest elements of classical music from East and West. Mankind needs peace and harmony, which means that human beings need to live with trust and communication. Music is a universal key in communication between the nations, and a gateway to universal understanding between all people. Thank you most sincerely for coming to hear the Beijing Symphony Orchestra! Tan Lihua President, Music Director, Principal Conductor Beijing Symphony Orchestra

About the Orchestra Beijing Symphony Orchestra Praised as “The Orchestral Pearl of the Capital of China,” the Beijing Symphony Orchestra (BSO) was established in October 1977, and is today a focal point of musical art, performance ,and culture in China. The BSO is known worldwide for its impeccable standards, as well as for the depth of its Western and Chinese repertoire. The BSO is the resident orchestra of the Forbidden City Concert Hall, Beijing. As observers, participants, and creators of the musical culture of Beijing, the BSO has evolved in parallel with the pace of China’s reform and opening-up. Thus, the BSO has grown and matured hand-in-hand with modern Beijing. With its high professional standards combined with a deep passion for the art of music, the BSO has become a pacemaker for the rise and development of classical music in China. In the 1990s, the BSO underwent significant reform and development under the direction of its Principal Conductor and Music Director, Maestro Tan Lihua. Under Maestro Tan, the BSO maintains an energetic, high-level and creative schedule, performing annually from ninety to one hundred performances, at home and abroad. In addition to the regular schedule of concerts conducted by Maestro Tan, the BSO has also collaborated with an impressive list of

guest artists (conductors, soloists and vocalists) of the highest class. Maestro Tan Lihua has also taken part in a wide range of prestigious collaborations, including work with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Russian National Symphony Orchestra, and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Today, the BSO’s roster of guest conductors, and soloists include first-class maestros such as Mstislav Rostropovich, Evgeny Svetlanov, Christoph Eschenbach, Lawrence Foster, Thomas Sanderling, Leif Segerstam; piano virtuosos such as Lazar Berman, Justus Frantz, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Tzimon Barto, Lang Lang; violin masters such as Vadim Repin, Sara Chang, Midori Goto, Kristof Barati, Sergej Krylov; the cello master Jullian LIoyd Webber; viola master Yuri Bashmet; trumpet virtuoso Gábor Boldoczki; and vocalists such as Placido Domingo, José Carreras, and Jennifer Larmore. Maestro Christoph Eschenbach was very impressed when, for the first time, he worked with BSO in 2012. Maestro Eschenbach stated: “The BSO is an orchestra of exceptional high professional quality. Their high level of musical understanding, their range, and the quality of their performance made a deep impression on me.” Over the past decade, the BSO has made international achievements at a level unattainable by most Chinese orchestras. In 2001, the BSO established its leadership role by becoming the first Chinese orchestra to go worldwide when it embarked upon its premiere international tour. The BSO has since been invited to perform in many countries, including Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, Croatia, Italy, Poland, Hungary, Turkey, Serbia, South Slovenia, and South Korea. In the years 2001, 2003, 2006, 2009, and 2012, the BSO completed six highly successful European tours. Critics throughout Europe spoke highly and wrote well of these tours. In Germany, for example, the Suddentsche Zeitung praised both the excellence of the BSO’s performance as well as Maestro Tan’s conducting. The BSO also assumes an important re-

sponsibility in developing and promoting Chinese symphonic music. For example, new works by Wang Xilin, Bao Yuankai, Huang Anlun, Xu Zhenmin, Guo Wen Jing, and Zhou Long have all been premiered and performed by the BSO. By supporting contemporary Chinese composers, the BSO has contributed to and supported the development of over two hundred works in the Chinese symphonic repertoire: works that have been presented not only in China, but also worldwide. The BSO has pioneered a relationship with the prestigious EMI recording company, having released eight new and impressive CDs worldwide since 2007. The BSO maintains a deep commitment to music education and the popularization of classical and symphonic music. The BSO’s outreach programs to universities, schools, communities, and factories have reached out to enlighten, educate, and inform more than a combined audience of over million new listeners during the past 20 years.

STYX

About the Artist Spawned from a suburban Chicago basement in the early ‘70s, STYX would eventually transform into the virtual arena rock prototype by the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, due to a fondness for big rockers and soaring power ballads. Early on, STYX’s music reflected such thencurrent prog rockers as Emerson, Lake & Palmer, and the Moody Blues, as evidenced by such releases as 1972’s self-titled debut, 1973’s STYX II, 1974’s The Serpent Is Rising, and 1975’s Man of Miracles. While the albums (as well as non-stop touring) helped the group build a substantial following locally, STYX failed to break through to the mainstream, until a track originally from their second album, “Lady” started to get substantial airplay in late ‘74 on the Chicago radio station WLS-FM. The song was soon issued as a single nationwide, and quickly shot to number six on the singles chart, as STYX II was certified gold. By this time, however, the group had grown disenchanted with their record label and opted to sign on with A&M for their fifth release overall, 1975’s Equinox (their former label would issue countless compilations over the

years, culled from tracks off their early releases). On the eve of the tour in support of the album, original guitarist John Curulewski abruptly left the band, and was replaced by Tommy Shaw. Shaw proved to be the missing piece of the puzzle for STYX, as most of their subsequent releases throughout the late ‘70s earned at least platinum certification (1976’s Crystal Ball, 1977’s The Grand Illusion, 1978’s Pieces of Eight, and 1979’s Cornerstone), and spawned such hit singles and classic rock radio standards as “Come Sail Away,” “Renegade,” “Blue Collar Man,” and “Fooling Yourself.” The band decided that their first release of the ‘80s would be a concept album, 1981’s Paradise Theater, which was loosely based on the rise and fall of a once-beautiful theater (which was supposedly used as a metaphor for the state of the U.S. at the time—the Iranian hostage situation, the Cold War, Reagan, etc.). Paradise Theater became STYX’s biggest hit of their career (selling over three million copies in a three-year period), as they became one of the U.S. top rock acts due to such big hit singles as “Too Much Time on My Hands.” It also marked the first time in history that a band released four consecutive triple-platinum albums. A career-encompassing live album, Caught in the Act, was issued in 1984, before STYX went on hiatus, and the majority of its members pursued solo projects throughout the remainder of the decade. A re-recording of their early hit, “Lady” (titled “Lady ‘95”), for a greatest hits compilation, finally united Shaw with his former STYX bandmates, which led to a full-on reunion tour in 1996. But drummer John Panozzo fell seriously ill at the time (due to a long struggle with alcoholism), which prevented him from joining the proceedings—as he passed away in July of the same year. Although grief-stricken, STYX persevered with new drummer Todd Sucherman taking the place of Panozzo, as the STYX reunion tour became a surprise sold-out success, resulting in the release of a live album/video, 1997’s Return to Paradise, while a whole new generation of rock fans were introduced to the grandiose sounds of STYX via a humorous car ad which used the track “Mr. Roboto,” as well as songs used in such TV shows as South Park and Freaks & Geeks.

Cyndi Lauper

About the Artist CYNDI LAUPER For the past 30 years, Cyndi Lauper has been dazzling—and surprising—her fans all over the world. A multi-talented artist and one of music’s most beloved icons, she has racked up global record sales of over 50 million (and 14 Grammy® nominations) and has won countless awards, from a Grammy® and an Emmy® to numerous honors for her tireless activism. This year brings another series of spectacular firsts for Lauper, as well as a celebration of her three decades in the music industry. To her lengthy list of accomplishments, she can now add Broadway composer, Tony® Awardwinner, star of her own TV show, and author. Lauper, who won great acclaim with her 2006 stage debut as Jenny in The Threepenny Opera, has written the music and lyrics for the much-anticipated Broadway adaptation of the British film Kinky Boots. The show won six

Tony® Awards including Best Musical, Best Leading Man, and Best Score. Lauper became the first solo woman ever to win the Tony® for Best Score. The new musical, which opened on The Great White Way in April brings together a powerhouse team: Lauper, legendary producers Daryl Roth and Hal Luftig, four-time Tony® Award-winner Harvey Fierstein (who wrote the book) and venerable director and choreographer Jerry Mitchell. “Kinky Boots is the kind of joyous, inspirational musical that we love and are excited to share with audiences,” say Roth and Luftig. Inspired by a true story, it’s the tale of one Charlie Price, who is forced to step in and save his family’s shoe factory in Northern England following the sudden death of his father. Help arrives from the unlikeliest angel—a charismatic drag performer named Lola. Together, this improbable duo revitalize the ailing business and help one another grow into

the men their fathers dreamed they would become. In the process—and buoyed by Lauper’s unforgettable score of instant classics, from lively comic tunes to bring-down-thehouse stunners—they transform an entire community through the power of acceptance. It’s a message that could not be more timely. For her television adventure, she joined with one of TV’s most influential producers, Mark Burnett, whom she met after her 2010 turn on Celebrity Apprentice. Her docu-series, titled Cyndi Lauper: Still So Unusual, aired this past January and February on WE tv. The half-hour show gave viewers a backstage pass through her personal and professional life as she juggles her roles as rock star, mother, wife, Broadway composer, and philanthropist. In addition, Lauper is the Honorary Chairperson and a co-founder of the True Colors Residence, the first project of its kind to provide a permanent, supportive and secure home to formerly homeless LGBT youth in

New York City. Looking to the near future, Lauper will once again turn back to her first love—music. For now, she’s mum on the details of her next album and tour, but one thing is for sure: it’s yet another invigorating challenge for this ever-changing artist—a woman who is never afraid to push herself creatively, and take her many fans along for the ride. About CHARLES ADDAMS The musical The Addams Family is inspired by the creations of the legendary American cartoonist Charles Addams, who lived from 1912 until 1988. In 1933, when he was just 21, his work was published in The New Yorker, and over the course of nearly six decades, he became one of the magazine’s most cherished contributors. Addams is most widely known for his characters that came to be called The Addams Family, a group that evolved into multiple television shows, motion pictures and now this Broadway musical. The majority of his cartoons are occupied by hundreds of other

characters, but there is little doubt that those that come to life on this stage are his most beloved creations. Over 15 books of his drawings have been published around the world, including the new collection, The Addams Family: An Evilution. Addams’ works appear in a number of prestigious permanent collections including The New York Public Library, The Museum of the City of New York, and The Library of Congress. Generously underwritten by

THE KARMA FOUNDATION

This program is made possible in part through a grant by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts.

Bob James & David Sanborn

About the Artists BOB JAMES Discovered by Quincy Jones at the Notre Dame Jazz Festival in 1963, James recorded his first solo album, Bold Conceptions, that year for Mercury Records. 58 albums and innumerable awards would follow through five decades. He honed his skills working with Creed Taylor, working on albums for artists like Hank Crawford, Grover Washington, Jr, among others. While with CTI, James found great popular success overseeing significant hits for Paul Simon, Neil Diamond, Maynard Ferguson, and Kenny Loggins. In 1974, James finally recorded his own album, One, which launched a lifelong career of recording and performing live. After three more albums, James began his own label, Tappan Zee Records. This allowed James to spend more time in the studio, focusing on his own creative works. It was during this time that he recorded his own gold seller, Touchdown, which included his composition, “Angela,” the instrumental theme from the sitcom Taxi, and possibly James’ best known work. James composed all the original music used in that television series for its entire run. One On One, the first in three collaborations with Earl Klugh, was awarded a Grammy® in 1980 for Best Pop Instrumental Performance, and has sold over a million copies. During this time, James set the standard for the smooth jazz sound in the late 1970s. James is recognized as one of the progenitors of smooth jazz, however, his music has also had a profound effect on the history of hip hop music, having been sampled often. Two of James’ songs—“Nautilus” from 1974’s One and “Take Me to the Mardi Gras” from 1975’s Two—are among the most sampled in hip hop history. According to whosampled.com, “Nautilus” and “Take Me to Mardi Gras” have been sampled in 32 and 43 hip-hop recordings, respectively. The title track from his 1981 album Sign of the Times was sampled in De La Soul‘s “Keepin’ the Faith,” and Warren G’s “Regulate.” DAVID SANBORN has released 24 albums, won six Grammy® Awards, and has

had eight Gold albums and one Platinum album. Having inspired countless other musicians, Sanborn has worked in many genres which typically blend instrumental pop, R&B and lately, more and more traditional jazz. He released his first solo album Taking Off in 1975, but has been playing the saxophone since before he was in high school when he was inspired by the great Chicago blues artists near his hometown of St. Louis. Having contracted polio at the age of three, Sanborn was introduced to the saxophone as part of his treatment therapy. By the age of 14, he was able to play with legends such as Albert King and Little Milton. Sanborn went on to study music at Northwestern University before transferring to the University of Iowa where he played and studied with the great saxophonist JR Monterose. Later traveling to California on the advice of a friend, he joined the Butterfield Blues Band and played Woodstock with Paul Butterfield. Following that, Sanborn toured with Stevie Wonder and recorded for Wonder’s Talking Book album, played with The Rolling Stones, and toured with David Bowie with whom he recorded the famous solo heard on “Young Americans.” Sanborn’s solo release of Taking Off in 1975—still considered a classic—further solidified his career. His 1979 release of Hideaway became a popular hit and further propelled Sanborn’s ascent with the single, “Seduction” being featured in the movie, American Gigolo. Veteran bassist and composer Marcus Miller joined Sanborn on the 1981 album, Voyeur. The single, “All I Need Is You” won Sanborn his first Grammy® Award for Best R&B Instrumental Performance. In 1983, Sanborn released the hit album Backstreet that included Luther Vandross as a featured guest vocalist. Later albums have included guest artists such as Jack DeJohnette, Bill Frisell, Charlie Hayden, Wallace Roney, Kenny Barron, Christian McBride, and Eric Clapton.

Notes on the Program In Ireland HAMILTON HARTY Born December 4, 1879 in the United Kingdom Died February 19, 1941 in the United Kingdom The career of Hamilton Harty (1879-1941) was that of a performing musician, not a composer. It is important to make this distinction, because it helps to explain several aspects of his music. Making his living as an organist at the age of 16, as a piano accompanist in his twenties, and then as a conductor, he never had any formal studentship as a composer, and his few major works were written at intervals during his working life, often in response to some external need or stimulus. It is doubtful that he ever sat back and reflected upon the path of his creative development, and so each big works stands by itself, as finished in its imperfections as in its qualities. That is why it is easy to spot “influences” in his music, because he never had the time to fully absorb the different styles to which he was attracted. Apart from the diverse styles of such composers as Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Sibelius, etc, there was the problem of integrating the idioms of his native Irish folk-music into the language of the main European tradition of art-music. Of course, the “problems” are really ours, with our overdeveloped style-consciousness, rather than Harty’s. He just wrote down the music that came from his heart, intuitively and unselfconsciously. That is his great strength; and if there are any unresolved conflicts in his music, the nature of them is part of its uniqueness. He later turned to arranging and orchestrating, mainly of course the music of Handel, but also some early pieces of his own. One of these was the fantasy In Ireland, originally for flute and piano, which he deftly turned into an orchestral piece in 1935. The fantasy In Ireland has a headnote which reads “In a Dublin street at dusk two

wandering street-musicians are playing.” The term fantasy conveys both the free-flowing improvisatory character of the solo flute writing and the quick-changing mood of the music, between plangent melancholy and dance-like gaiety. But it should not be taken to imply any looseness of construction, for it is in fact a tightly-wrought piece. The following layout will show how the sections are linked: Moderato con passion: Introduction, leading to florid flute theme (a)

Concerto in D major for flute and orchestra, K. 314 WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART Born January 27, 1756, in Salzburg Died December 5, 1791, in Vienna During the years 1777-1778, a 21-year-old Mozart left his native Salzburg in order to journey to Mannheim in search of a new position. For Mozart personally, this trip was discouraging. Not only did his mother die during the journey, but he also failed to secure the appointment he so desired. Nevertheless, during his stay in Mannheim, at the end of 1777, Mozart met a Dutch patron by the name of De Jean who commissioned him to write new works. The pieces that resulted were three flute quartets and, almost a year later, two flute concerti. Mozart composed very slowly and unwillingly for De Jean causing the commission to be left incomplete and the fee never to be fully paid. The second of the two concerti, Concerto in D major, is believed to be a transcription of his Oboe Concerto in C major written for the Salzburg oboist Giuseppe Ferlendis, in 1777. Mozart possibly re-wrote the work, transposing it up a step, due to his lack of time and

money and because of the impatience of his patron. Since the work was composed earlier and in his home, it reflects a much lighter mood than that of his G major, which was completed in Mannheim. The opening movement, Allegro aperto, excels in its lightness. The levity of mood set from the first measures in the announcement of the principal subject is very much connected to the key of D major during the classical period. The slow-movement which follows, Andante, ma non troppo, has an abundance of subjects, common in much of Mozart’s music, which are stated by both soloist and ensemble. The final movement, Allegro, is built upon the jocular and serene nature of the principal theme, intensified by the virtuoso playing of the soloist. © 1995 Columbia Artists Management Inc.

Carolan Variations PHILIP HAMMOND I had always been aware of the huge contribution that the Armagh-born musician Edward Bunting made to the legacy, and indeed the survival, of Irish traditional music. But, until about three years ago, I had never really spent a great deal of time studying the original arrangements which Bunting composed and compiled in three large volumes—dated 1796, 1809, and 1840. Such a storehouse of musical material became difficult thereafter for me to ignore and I have since made several re-arrangements and re-workings of some of the melodies or motifs I discovered therein . Mostly these became piano pieces and I have collected and continue to collect them under the general title of “Miniatures and Modulations”. When Sir James and Lady Jeanne Galway invited me to write them something, I thought it was particularly appropriate to source my starting point in Bunting’s collections. I chose two melodies both composed by the great Irish harper Turlough O’Carolan as the basis for these Carolan Variations. The first stems from one entitled “The Lamentation of Owen O’Neil” and I have

come back to this very beautiful melody time and again in other contexts. The second piece is the famous Carolan’s Concerto which is said to have been the harper’s response to the classical music world of Ireland in the eighteenth century which was obsessed by the style and flair of the Italians. In both cases, I have considerably varied the original music although it is always clear where my versions come from! The Carolan Variations were first performed as part of the Walled City Music Festival in Derry during August 2011 and this version for string accompaniment was written at the request of Sir James and Lady Jeanne for their U.S. tour with the Irish Chamber Orchestra in the autumn of 2013. PHILIP HAMMOND was born in Belfast in 1951. He graduated from Queen’s University Belfast in 1974 as a Bachelor of Music and Master of Arts. In July 2003, he became the first composer ever to graduate as a Doctor of Music from

Irish Chamber Orchestra

Queen’s. Following an encompassing career in teaching, performing and writing, he retired from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland in 2009 after twenty years which included two years designing and managing an international arts festival in Washington DC complementing Northern Ireland’s presence at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in 2007. In retirement, in addition to composing, he is often engaged as a presenter and correspondent by the BBC and RTÉ and he writes critiques for the Belfast Telegraph and the Culture Northern Ireland website. Philip Hammond has received commissions for, amongst others, the Ulster Orchestra, the National Youth Orchestra of Ireland, the contemporary ensemble Lontano, the Brodsky String Quartet and for individual musicians such as Sir James Galway, Sarah Walker, Suzanne Murphy, Tasmin Little, Barry Douglas, Nikolai Demidenko, and Dame Ann Murray. © 2013 Philip Hammond

Symphony No. 3 in A minor, Op. 56 (“Scottish”) FELIX MENDELSSOHN Born February 3, 1809, in Hamburg Died November 4, 1847, in Leipzig The idea to write a “Scottish” Symphony came to Mendelssohn while visiting Scotland in 1829. In a letter from Edinburgh, on July 30, the composer wrote: “We went, in the deep twilight, to the palace of Holyrood, where Queen Mary lived and loved. There is a little room to be seen there with a winding staircase leading to it. This the murderers ascended, and finding Rizzio, drew him out....killed him. The chapel is roofless, grass and ivy growing abundantly in it, and before the altar, now in ruins, Mary was crowned Queen of Scotland. I believe I found today in that old chapel the beginning of my Scottish Symphony.” Indeed, Mendelssohn did write the first ten bars of the opening Andante on the day of his visit to Holyrood; however, the Symphony had to wait thirteen years before it was completed. Aside from being Mendelssohn’s most mature work and perhaps his finest, the “Scot-

tish” Symphony also bears historical significance as the movements are all joined together, marking a definite step toward the creation of the symphonic poem. Also the structure of the first movement, where material of the introduction is used to unify the work thematically, foretells the use of this technique to create a relationship between the first movement and all subsequent ones. The first movement begins with a slow and solemn introduction marked Andante con moto. The oboe theme heard at the beginning casts its shadow over most of the other themes of the symphony. The main section of the movement, marked Allegro un poco agitato, is cast in a modified sonata form and exhibits a generally somber orchestral coloring; its main theme treats the opening idea in variation style. Against reminders of the main theme in the background, the second theme makes its first appearance in the unexpected key of B minor, played by solo clarinet. The development section is marked by a remarkable series of modulations, the dynamic intensification of its themes, and gripping dramatic scenes seemingly mingling the world of nature with the experience of nature (as in the passage that clearly depicts the sea gripped by a raging storm). After the recapitulation, which starts pianissimo with the main theme on clarinet and first violins, comes a lengthy coda reminding us of the mysterious modulatory sequence and growing to an impassioned climax. Unusually, this is rounded off by the return of the introductory material which, as the excitement fades away, leads into the Scherzo with a minimum of break. The Scherzo, marked Vivace, ma non troppo, is an exceptionally high spirited movement, also in sonata form and based on a pentatonic scale; many musicologists have commented on the resemblance to the Scottish air Charlie is my darling. The main theme is first presented by a solo clarinet. The proceedings are marked by the graceful rhythmic treatment. The third movement, Adagio, bears a

marked influence from Beethoven and is strongly prophetic of Brahms. It is imprinted with resignation and yearning; its gravity and all- encompassing sadness might remind the listener of Mendelssohn’s gloomy recollections of Holyrood. With every turn, the slow, lyric melody that is presented at the outset is varied and elaborated. The final brisk movement, Allegro vivacissimo, exhibits a militant mood that is unprecedented in Mendelssohn’s works, while its copious thematic material, much of it of a folk-like nature, is treated in a free fantasy mode. At the outset, the first violins present two lively melodies, one after the other. A second pair of themes, a little less emphatic, begins with a jaunty motif for oboe, followed by a rumbustious melody for fortissimo strings. After the energetic development of the themes, the recapitulation is brief, giving prominence to the coda. Here the theme from the introduction is transformed in variation style, free from its previous elegiac mood, into a march-like hymn of triumph, reaching the magnificent conclusion and lending unity to the entire work. Mendelssohn completed his “Scottish” Symphony, regarded as the summit of his symphonic achievements, on January 20, 1842. After presenting the work the following June at a concert of the Philharmonic Society of London, the composer was granted the privilege of dedicating this symphony to Queen Victoria. © 1994 Columbia Artists Management Inc.

Amazing Grace Grace Potter of the band Grace Potter and the Nocturnals took a few minutes perform she took the State Theatre on September 8th to snap a few quick pics with some big fans.

A Evening with Sinbad On September 15th, comedian Sinbad had people rolling in the aisles as he performed his live stand-up, touching on everything from parenthood, to growing up in the 60s and 70s, to Miley Cyrus.

Milk & Cookies Returns! The State Theatre’s popular Milk & Cookies storytelling and music series returned this fall on September 28, with storyteller April Armstrong. April presented her program “Songs and Stories from Around the World” and of course there was free milk and cookies! Milk was generously donated by Cream-O-Land and the cookies were provided by the Rutgers chapter of Delta Phi Omega, who also provided volunteer services for the event. Milk & Cookies is sponsored by The Provident Bank Foundation.
