WELCOME TO THE HISTORIC STATE THEATRE NEW JERSEY! State Theatre New Jersey, celebrating its 97th anniversary on December 26, was built as a grand movie palace in the heyday of silent film and vaudeville. Reade’s State Theatre was designed by one of the most accomplished theater architects of the day, Thomas W. Lamb, and was one of the biggest, most lavish, and modern theaters in the region. The December 26, 1921 opening matinee audience—including the first ticket buyer, nine-year old Victor Levin of Paterson Street, New Brunswick—willingly paid the 20-, 30-, or 50-cents admission. They were treated to a live orchestra concert and a tenor rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner.” The first feature presentation was the silent film, White Oak, a western starring cowboy hero William S. Hart. There were also five vaudeville acts, a newsreel, and a nature film.

A HISTORY

A few years after the opening, the theater’s management was transferred to the B.F. Keith theater chain. Benjamin Franklin Keith and his partner, Edward Franklin Albee, operated the largest string of vaudeville theaters and the largest booking agency for vaudeville acts in the east. Eventually the vaudeville and silent movies were superseded by films with sound (“talkies”), at which point Radio-Keith Orpheum (RKO) began operating the facility. The RKO logo can still be seen above the brass window boxes at the theater’s entrance. WATCH THE STATE THEATRE DOCUMENTARY! THE CHRISTMAS STORY AT POPS We tell a lot of stories during the holiday season. Each year, here at the Pops, we leave our audiences with “visions of sugarplums” dancing in their heads with our classic rendition of A Visit from St. Nicholas. Through the years, we have told the tales of How the Grinch Stole Christmas, The Polar Express, and Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. These are all beautiful holiday tales, but they all owe their existence to a much older story...“the greatest story ever told,” as the movie would have it. In 2015 we presented the premiere of a brand-new version of The Christmas Story, 20

which uses the words of Isaiah and the Gospels, and some of our most beloved carols, to tell the original story of the season. I worked with the original concept of composer Philip Lane, with additional contributions from Tony Award®winning, Boston-based orchestrator Bill Elliott, to tell this beautiful story in the most compelling way possible. I am also delighted to be including the whimsical illustrations of treasured children’s book author Tomie dePaola, who is celebrating more than 50 years in publishing. It was truly a labor of love. The story of Christmas is the story of hope—a bright light of hope that even the

darkest winter night cannot extinguish. It is a story of love, and of sacrifice, and it stands as an enduring testament to the power of love and the responsibilities inherent in our shared humanity. The story draws us away from the cynical and dismissive glare of modern existence and asks us to renew a childlike faith. It is the deep well from which our other stories of the season are drawn...stories of Santa Claus and miracles, of the importance of generosity and the necessity of belief. I wish for all of you the most blessed of holiday seasons—a season of laughter, of joy and family. And I wish for all of us a renewed belief in the essential goodness of humanity, and a renewed sense of our responsibility to our fellow inhabitants of this beautiful world. KEITH LOCKHART Having celebrated his 20th anniversary as Boston Pops Conductor in 2015, Keith Lockhart is the second longest-tenured conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra since its founding in 1885. He took over as conductor in 1995, following John Williams’s 13-year tenure from 1980 to 1993; Williams succeeded the legendary Arthur Fiedler, who was at the helm of the orchestra for nearly 50 years. Keith Lockhart, who occupies the Julian and Eunice Cohen Boston Pops Conductor chair, has conducted more than 1,900 Boston Pops concerts and annual Boston Pops appearances at Tanglewood, as well as 43 national tours and four international tours to Japan and Korea. The annual Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular conducted by Mr. Lockhart draws a live audience of over half a million to the Charles River Esplanade and millions more who view it on television or live webcast. The list of more than 250 guest artists with whom Keith Lockhart has collaborated represents performers from virtually every corner of the entertainment world. Having recently completed an eight-year tenure as principal conductor, he is now chief guest conductor of the BBC Concert Orchestra in London; he is also artistic director of the Brevard Music Center summer institute and festival in North Carolina. Prior to his BBC appointment, he spent 11 years as music director of the Utah Symphony. He has appeared as a guest conductor with virtually every major symphonic ensemble in North America and many in Asia and Europe. Before coming to Boston, he was the associate conductor of both the Cincinnati Symphony and Cincinnati Pops orchestras, as well as music director of the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra. PHILIP LIMA Baritone Philip Lima has regularly garnered critical acclaim from publications across the country for his performances on both concert and operatic stages. Having made his Boston Pops debut in June at Symphony Hall, he is delighted to return for these holiday performances. Mr. Lima has sung a wide array of leading operatic roles, including world premieres, for the international Kurt Weill Festival in Germany, the Handel and Haydn Society, Boston Academy of Music, and Opera Boston, as well as numerous regional American opera companies. He has performed in recital in Berlin, New York, and Rome; and appeared as soloist with the Daejeon (Korea) Philharmonic Orchestra, the National Philharmonic of Ukraine, New York’s Amor Artis, Boston Ballet, Boston Classical Orchestra, Boston Landmarks Orchestra, Rhode Island Philharmonic, Cape Cod Symphony, and more than 60 other orchestras, choral societies, and concert series across the United States. Mr. Lima’s performance of Schubert’s “Winterreise” with pianist Beverly Orlove was named by The Boston 22

Phoenix as one of Boston’s “Unforgettable Classical Events of 2005.” A native of New Bedford, Massachusetts, and an alumnus of Yale University, Philip Lima studied at the Tanglewood Music Center and Boston University with Phyllis Curtin and with Richard Conrad. He became Mr. Conrad’s successor as the artistic director of The Bostonians, an opera, and concert ensemble. THE METROPOLITAN CHORALE Lisa Graham, Music Director Founded in 1979, The Metropolitan Chorale (metropolitanchorale.org) is an auditioned chorus that is recognized as one of metropolitan Boston’s premier choral ensembles. Since 2004 the ensemble has been under the direction of Dr. Lisa Graham. Metropolitan Chorale concerts explore works by many of today’s leading American and British composers, as well as major choral masterworks. In addition to performances at All Saints Parish (Brookline, Massachusetts), the Chorale has been heard throughout the Boston area. Its Artists in Residence program enables the chorus to work with young professional singers. Under the leadership of Lisa Graham, The Metropolitan Chorale’s membership has grown to encompass 100 members who hail from communities throughout greater Boston. Dr. Graham has expanded the ensemble’s repertory and has enhanced the reputation and reach of the Chorale. Also the Evelyn Barry Director of Choral Programs at Wellesley College, she conducts the Wellesley College Choir, Chamber Singers, and Choral Scholars, and teaches academic courses. Active in the Boston musical scene and as a clinician and festival adjudicator, Dr. Graham prepared members of the Tanglewood Festival Chorus for a recent Boston Symphony Orchestra performance of Holst’s The Planets.

HOLIDAZE THROUGH THE YEARS Cirque Dreams Holidaze is one of the nation’s most iconic and successful holiday shows ever produced. In 2006, Broadway Director and Cirque Dreams Founder Neil Goldberg conceived and presented a Holiday show to replace the Radio City Christmas Spectacular that performed annually at the Grand Palace Theatre in Branson, Missouri. Many U.S. theater owners and presenters attended the show during its five-week engagement. Most believed there was not a successful business model to produce and present a six-week touring Holiday show in the U.S. Since then, Cirque Dreams Holidaze remains an audi-

ence, family, and fan favorite. When the 2008 success of Cirque Dreams Jungle Fantasy on Broadway exceeded all expectations, demand piqued for Cirque Dreams Holidaze. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Bob Woodward is a journalistic icon who gained international attention when he and Carl Bernstein broke the deeply disturbing news of the Watergate scandal. Watergate’s theme of secret government is a common thread throughout Woodward’s career that has spawned 19 books—all national bestsellers—13 of them #1—more than any other contemporary nonfiction author. His 19th book, FEAR: Trump in the White House, sold more than 1.1 million copies in its first week in September 2018—breaking the 94-year firstweek sales record of its publisher Simon & Schuster. No one else in political investigative journalism has the clout, respect, and reputation of Woodward. He has a way of getting insiders to open up in ways that reveal an intimate yet sweeping portrayal of Washington and the political infighting, how we fight wars, the price of politics, how presidents lead, the homeland security efforts, and so much more. His work is meticulous and draws on internal memos, classified documents, meeting notes, and hundreds of hours of interviews with most of the key players, including the president. Professionally, Bob Woodward is currently associate editor for The Washington Post where he’s worked since 1971. Woodward was born March 26, 1943 in Illinois. ABOUT THE MODERATOR Christine Todd Whitman is the President of The Whitman Strategy Group (WSG), a consulting firm that specializes in energy and environmental issues. Governor Whitman served in the cabinet of President George W. Bush as Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency from January of 2001 until June of 2003. She was the 50th Governor of the State of New Jersey, serving as its first woman governor from 1994 until 2001. She is the author of a New York Times best seller called It’s My Party Too, which was published in January of 2005. Governor Whitman serves on the Board

ABOUT THE SHOW ACT I | The Party The scene opens with the annual Christmas Eve Tree Lighting party at the home of the Silverhaus’. Clara and Fritz anxiously wait outside the parlor for the tree lighting, when to Clara’s horror and Fritz’s delight, the maid enters the hall, chasing a mouse from the pantry. 64

Father calls the children in, and the tree is

lighted. As guests arrive, we are introduced to the Elegant Family, the Widow, her daughter, the Dapper Gent, and the Big Family with their nine children. After a festive dance performed by the children, the mysterious Uncle Drosselmeyer and his Nephew arrive. Drosselmeyer reveals wonderful mechanical dolls, and then presents his favorite niece, Clara, with a beautifully carved Nutcracker. As all of the children watch Drosselmeyer’s demonstration of the Nutcracker, Fritz be-

comes jealous and grabs the gift from Clara. In his ﬂight, he drops and breaks it. Drosselmeyer bandages the Nutcracker and gives it to Clara. The party winds down, the guests depart and the Silverhaus family goes to bed.

enchanted journey. The parlor is magically transformed into the Land of Snow, and Angels ﬂoat onto the scene. Clara and the Prince meet the beautiful Snow Queen and King and are dazzled by whirlwinds of Snowﬂakes.

The Battle Unable to sleep, Clara sneaks downstairs to visit her Nutcracker. As she dances in the parlor with the Nutcracker, the shadows and the movement of little mice disturb her delight. Drosselmeyer appears and casts her into a dream world, transforming the parlor into a battleground between an army of soldiers and rats.

ACT II | Land of Sweets Clara and the Nutcracker Prince make their way to the Land of Sweets and are greeted by the Sugar Plum Fairy. The Prince tells the story of the great battle for the Christmas tree and how Clara saved the day by thwarting the Rat King and securing victory. As a reward for her heroism, the Sugar Plum Fairy presents dances from different lands including Chocolate from Spain, Coffee from Arabia, Tea from China, Candy Canes from Russia, Marzipan from Germany, and a wonderfully playful meeting of Mother Ginger and her many children. This is followed by a fragrant bouquet of Flowers and the tour de force pas de deux by the Sugar Plum and her Cavalier. After the grand ﬁnale, a very happy but tired Clara is returned home to the comfort of the family parlor and wakes from her wonderful journey.

Clara is amazed by the transformation of the parlor as the now life-size Nutcracker and his army of soldiers defend the Christmas tree from the minions of the Rat King and mice. As the fortune of the battle turns, Clara defends her beloved Nutcracker by throwing her shoe at the Rat King—vanquishing him and his awful troop. Land of Snow Drosselmeyer reappears and transforms the wounded Nutcracker into the Nutcracker Prince who will accompany Clara on an

ABOUT AMERICAN REPERTORY BALLET

American Repertory Ballet’s (ARB) mission is to bring the joy, beauty, artistry, and discipline of classical and contemporary dance to New Jersey and nationwide audiences, and to dance students through artistic and educational programs. Led by Executive Director Julie Diana Hench, the organization comprises: the preeminent professional classical and contemporary ballet company in the state; Princeton Ballet School, one of the largest and most respected non-proﬁt dance schools in the nation; and ARB’s Access & Enrichment initiatives, including the acclaimed DANCE POWER program, the longest continuously running community and arts partnership in New Jersey. ARB is committed to presenting classical and contemporary ballets from the 19th and 20th centuries alongside new and existing works by choreographers from today. Founded in 1963, the company is under the leadership of Artistic Director Douglas Martin, former principal dancer at the Joffrey Ballet, Cleveland Ballet, and American Repertory Ballet. ARB’s rich history of repertory includes works by leading choreographers including Balanchine, Forsythe, Limón, Parsons, Peterson, and many others. ARB has been consistently designated a “Major Arts Institution” by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts for the past two decades and has repeatedly been awarded a Citation of Excellence by the Council. ARB was voted the JerseyArts People’s Choice for “Favorite Dance Company” in 2008, 2011, 2012, and 2015-

2018. Princeton Ballet School has gained a national reputation for its excellent dance training since its founding in 1954 by Audrée Estey. Under the direction of Aydmara Cabrera, the school serves approximately 1,000 students, starting at age three, and includes a large open enrollment division for adults. The school has studios in Cranbury, New Brunswick, and Princeton and offers classes in ballet, modern dance, jazz, hiphop, CardioBallet, and CoMBo (Conditioning for the Mind and Body). Students have gone on to dance in professional ballet and contemporary dance companies around the world, including New York City Ballet, Paul Taylor Dance Company, Miami City Ballet, Complexions, Mark Morris Dance Company, Twyla Tharp, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, Ballet West, and on Broadway. The Access & Enrichment wing of ARB reaches into the community through its DANCE POWER program, signature On Pointe lecture series, and with free programming, master classes, residencies, lecture demonstrations, and School-time Matinees. In 1986, ARB partnered with the New Brunswick Board of Education to create DANCE POWER. Today, it is the longest-running uninterrupted arts/ community partnership in New Jersey. The legendary Gregory Hines was DANCE POWER’s Honorary Chair for 18 years before his untimely passing in 2003. In 2001, Mr. Hines endowed a scholarship at Rutgers University that earmarks annual funds for a DANCE POWER student to attend the university.

A LETTER FROM THE DIRECTORS Dear Friends, Welcome to American Repertory Ballet’s Nutcracker! We hope to take you on a magical journey as our Company members and Princeton Ballet School students dance through fantastical lands of snow and sweets, guided by Tchaikovsky’s iconic score. Since 1964, our production has been a celebration of community and youthful imagination. It brings families together during the holiday season while serving as a rite of passage for generations of dancers. Nutcracker also reflects ARB’s commitment to partnership, and we are grateful to the many artists and arts organizations that add inspiring and artistic layers to our production and perform with us at venues statewide. We also appreciate our many sponsors and contributors that support us year after year, making our art possible. As many of you know, American Repertory Ballet will be a founding resident company of the New Brunswick Performing Arts Center in 2019. Our school will also be opening doors at this new state-of-the-art facility, in addition to having our locations in Princeton and Cranbury.
