WELCOME TO THE HISTORIC STATE THEATRE NEW JERSEY! In 1928, a few years after the opening of the State Theatre, RadioKeith Orpheum—a subsidiary of the Radio Corporation of America (RCA) better known as RKO—began operating the facility.

A HISTORY

As the “RKO State Theatre,” it entered upon its most successful period; during the dazzling years of the Golden Age of Hollywood, the State offered the biggest stars and pictures, the best-dressed and most attentive ushers, and over 2,000 plush velvet seats. Among the hundreds of first-run hits shown here were Ivanhoe, starring Elizabeth Taylor; Old Maid, with Bette Davis; and Giant, starring Rock Hudson, Elizabeth Taylor, and James Dean. The glamour in those days was not confined to celluloid; celebrities frequently made live guest appearances to promote their films or to help a worthy cause. In the 40s, Hedy Lamarr pitched war bonds at the State Theatre, while an obscure announcer named Walter Cronkite came here to announce the U.S. Infantry Band. The State Theatre rapidly established a reputation as the “class act” in town, known for its opulent décor, superb acoustics, and array of cinematic and live attractions. The RKO logo can still be seen above the brass window boxes at the theater’s entrance. A TREASURE OF NEW JERSEY— WATCH THE STATE THEATRE DOCUMENTARY! New Jersey’s public television network, NJTV, recently premiered its second episode of its documentary series, Treasures of New Jersey, featuring the State Theatre. Treasures of New Jersey: State Theatre New Jersey spotlights the complexities of operating a modern “presenting theater” and family-friendly non-profit community arts haven while telling the Theatre’s history through archival photographs, film, and interviews with those who know it best. A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT & CEO Dear Friends, Welcome to State Theatre New Jersey! Thank you for joining us today and choosing to spend your time with us during these winter months. It is our mission to present a diverse lineup of events for patrons of all ages and backgrounds, while providing the finest national and international performing artists for the people of Middlesex County and the State of New Jersey. On March 18, we are proud to present a FREE concert featuring The United States Army Field Band—Concert Band & Soldiers’ Chorus. Together, the Concert Band and Soldiers’ Chorus offer one of the most diverse programs by any concert ensemble, featuring marches and patriotic favorites, orchestral masterworks, new works for band, a cappella vocal arrangements, Broadway musicals, and much more. Tickets are going fast, so be sure to reserve your free ticket today online at STNJ.org or call 732-246-SHOW. Later this year on June 20, in honor of Pride Month, we are excited to present actor and social justice activist, George Takei. With an uncanny eloquence and signature wit, Takei shares the story of his family’s forced internment as Japanese Americans during WWII—a seemingly forgotten part of American history. He also takes audiences through his rise to celebrity as a sci-fi icon in Star Trek, his remarkable journey as a social media mega power, and his passionate fight for LGBTQ rights and marriage equality in America—empowering others to beat the odds and make a difference.

A MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD CHAIR Dear Friends, On December 26, 2018, State Theatre New Jersey celebrated its 97th anniversary. As many of you know, New Jersey’s public television network (NJTV) recently presented a world premiere of the second episode of its documentary series, Treasures of New Jersey, featuring State Theatre New Jersey. The series pays homage to some of the Garden State’s most iconic places, from historic landmarks and cultural centers to popular destinations. We are proud to say that State Theatre New Jersey is the first theater featured in the Treasures of New Jersey NJTV Series. Narrated by news personality and New Jersey native Jack Ford, Treasures of New Jersey: State Theatre New Jersey spotlights the complexities of operating a modern “presenting theater” and family-friendly nonprofit arts haven while telling the State Theatre’s history through archival photographs, film, and interviews with those who know it best. The documentary beautifully captures the State Theatre’s past, present, and future—from its original opening in 1921 as a grand live performance and movie palace when New Brunswick was a thriving transportation hub and manufacturing center with a growing population to its present form as a vibrant performing arts center.

From left to right: State Theatre President & CEO Sarah K. Chaplin, State Theatre Board Chairman Scott Fergang, and New Jersey First Lady Tammy Murphy

The episode, Treasures of New Jersey: State Theatre New Jersey can now be seen on NJTV as well as the New York stations WLIW and Thirteen (check your local listings). You can also view it online at STNJ.org/history. Sincerely, Guests filing past historic photos before the world premiere screening.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

In 1993 Hanna became the host of Jack Hanna’s Animal Adventures, a nationally and internationally syndicated television series. In 2007 he created a new unscripted and action-packed TV series, Jack Hanna’s Into the Wild. This series has earned 4 Daytime Emmy Awards® and is available on Netflix. Be sure to check local listings for both shows as Jack and his family explore the corners of the globe and discover amazing animals and cultures! Hanna and his TV crew have had the privilege to travel to Africa more than 40 times and visit each continent at least twice. Although he has explored many fascinating cultures and animals throughout his travels, the country that has truly captured his heart is Rwanda. There he has experienced the thrill of observing the magnificent mountain gorillas, while also spending time with people in the community. He is proud to support a number of Rwandan wildlife and humanitarian organizations including the Gorilla Doctors and Partners In Conservation at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium.

As a child, Jack Hanna spent his days cleaning animal cages for his local veterinarian and exploring the creek behind his house. Today, he explores the corners of the globe as one of the most visible and respected animal ambassadors in the world. His enthusiasm and hands-on approach to wildlife conservation has won him widespread acclaim as an author, television personality, conservationist, and director emeritus of the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium and The Wilds.

JOHN MELLENCAMP

ABOUT THE ARTIST JOHN MELLENCAMP John Mellencamp’s career in music, spanning more than 35 years, has seen him transition from pop star to one of the most highly respected singer/songwriters of a generation. Mellencamp is incredibly acclaimed; he is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a Grammy® winner, a recipient of the John Steinbeck Award, ASCAP Foundation’s Champion Award, The Woody Guthrie Award, and Americana Music Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award, and more recently, the Founders Award, the top honor assigned by the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. Additionally, he was recently inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame this past June. He is also one of the most successful live concert performers in the world. In 1985, Mellencamp, together with Willie Nelson and Neil Young, created Farm Aid. The social activism reflected in his songs helped catalyze Farm Aid, the concert series and organization that has addressed the struggle of American family farmers for more than 25 years.

As well, Mellencamp journeyed into the darkness of coal mining life in his reverent cover of Merle Travis’ 1946 song “Dark as a Dungeon,” recorded in support of National Geographic’s acclaimed documentary about the mining industry, From The Ashes, produced by Michael Bloomberg, former NYC Mayor. He continues to focus on another facet of his artistic expression: painting. His style has progressed over the years as evidenced by several gallery shows and published portfolios, and in recent years he has increased his output by completing over 100 new works. He had his second solo exhibition this past Spring in New York and an exhibit at the famed Butler Museum in Youngstown, Ohio this fall. His highly successful Rock and Roll Hall of Fame exhibit ran until Jan 5, 2019 and will continue to travel in the United States. Mellencamp continues his journey as the walking embodiment of rock icon; passionate, plain-spoken, and a self-proclaimed rebel. John Mellencamp continues to live and work in Bloomington, Indiana.

PROGRAM NOTES John Mauceri met Leonard Bernstein during the summer of 1971 when Mauceri was a 25-year-old conducting fellow at the Tanglewood Music Academy. Mauceri was hired the next summer to assist him at the Metropolitan Opera for a new production of Carmen and its recording on Deutsche Gramophone, which won a Grammy® for “Best Opera recording.” Mauceri, who was on a faculty at Yale, was given permission by the composer to produce and conduct Bernstein’s Mass on campus and then at Vienna’s Konzerthaus for its 1973 European premiere and a worldwide television broadcast produced by the BBC, Austrian television, and PBS. (In 1981, for the work’s tenth anniversary, Mauceri was once again tapped to conduct and supervise another new production of Mass for the Kennedy Center, directed by Tom O’Horgan and broadcast live on PBS.) In 1973 Bernstein appointed Mauceri to be musical supervisor of a new production of Candide at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, to be directed by Hal Prince, with a new book by Hugh Wheeler and additional lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. The production transferred to Broadway where it won four Tony Awards® including one for its “outstanding contribution to the artistic development of the musical theatre.” Mauceri then supervised an expanded Candide for the New York City Opera in 1982 and won a Grammy® for his recording. In 1988, a definitive Candide at Scottish Opera brought Mauceri an Olivier Award and it is this version that the composer recorded shortly before his death in 1990. Mauceri’s work with Bernstein included touring, editing, orchestrating, and taking charge of music festivals in Tel Aviv, London, Milan’s La Scala, Paris, the Kennedy Center, and at Bernstein’s 60th and 70th birthday galas. He was, for 18 years, Bernstein’s first choice to edit, conduct, and supervise his music.

AN ACOUSTIC EVENING WITH

LYLE LOVETT AND JOHN HIATT FRI, MARCH 1, 2019 AT 8PM

LYLE LOVETT AND JOHN HIATT

ABOUT THE ARTIST LYLE LOVETT A singer, composer, and actor, Lyle Lovett has broadened the definition of American music in a career that spans 14 albums. Coupled with his gift for storytelling, the Texas-based musician fuses elements of country, swing, jazz, folk, gospel, and blues in a conventiondefying manner that breaks down barriers. Whether touring as a Duo or with his Acoustic Group or his Large Band, Lovett’s live performances show not only the breadth of this Texas legend’s deep talents, but also the diversity of his influences, making him one of the most compelling and captivating musicians in popular music. Since his self-titled debut in 1986, Lyle Lovett has evolved into one of music’s most vibrant and iconic performers. Among his many accolades, besides the four Grammy Awards®, he was given the Americana Music Association’s inaugural Trailblazer Award, and was named Texas State Musician. His works, rich and eclectic, are some of the most beloved of any artist working today.

JOHN HIATT “You know how writing goes for me,” John Hiatt says, offering a glimpse into his creative process. “I get a couple of lines going, and then I just tag along as the songs start to reveal themselves. You’ve just gotta jump inside and take the ride.” Hiatt has been on that ride—as have we all, tagging along right beside him—for more than four decades now. In fact, since the release of his 1974 debut, Hangin’ Around the Observatory, rarely has more than a year or two passed without a new Hiatt collection hitting the shelves. But after wrapping up a year of touring in support of 2014’s Terms of My Surrender— the singer-songwriter’s 22nd studio effort overall—he found himself, for the first time in a long time, unsure of what would come next. Not that he panicked. “I’ve been lost before,” Hiatt says, with the self-assurance of a man who has experienced a thing or two over his long and varied career. “Although usually I have some sort of notion or clue where to go.” But this time? He laughs. “I had no sense whatsoever.” As for the cause of this uncertainty? “Life, really,” he says. “Or just changes in life. My wife and I made the decision to sell our farm [in Williamson County, Tennessee] and move back into Nashville. I wanted to spend more time with my family. I was aging, with all that entails or doesn’t entail. Stuff was just happening.” From this came The Eclipse Sessions. There’s a grit to these songs—a craggy, perfectly-imperfect quality that colors every aspect of the performances, right down to Hiatt’s vocals, which are quite possibly his most raw and expressive to date.

GOLDEN OLDIES SPECTACULAR

ABOUT THE ARTISTS LLOYD PRICE Headlining the show is “Mr. Personality,” Lloyd Price. Price was born outside New Orleans and played piano and trumpet and sang in the church choir. He started a band with his younger brother Leo (Leo went on to write “Send me Some Lovin” for Little Richard). Price’s first big hit, “Lawdy Miss Clawdy” embodied the rhythm and blues of the region and featured Fats Domino on piano. “Oooh, Oooh, Oooh,” ”Ain’t It a Shame,” and “Restless Heart” were follow up hits, but Price’s budding career was interrupted in 1954 when he was drafted to fight in Korea. While there, he was put in charge of a large dance band that played swing music for the troops. This became the origin of Price’s signature approach to music: combining a lush, full orchestra with the gritty, rawer tempos of R&B. Writing his own material, which was rare for hit makers of his era, Lloyd became a major influence on the history of rock and roll and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998. In the late 50s-early 60s, Price had a string of top 20 hits on both the pop and R&B charts, including “Stagger Lee” (#1 on both charts), “Personality”(#2 on pop charts), “I’m Gonna Get Married” (#3), “Lady Luck,” “Question,” “Come into my Heart,” and “Just Because.” Price’s stage performance has been legendary for decades. His band is comprised of some of the world’s premier musicians, and the six-piece horn section and female backup singers create the signature sound Price made famous 50 years ago. SONNY TURNER’S PLATTERS Sonny Turner’s Platters was formed in 1952. The Platters enjoyed an incredible 40 hit singles on the Billboard Charts from 1955-1967, including four #1 hits: “The Great Pretender,” “Twilight Time,” 60

Only You,” and “My Prayer.” Other memorable hits include “Smoke Gets in “Your Eyes,” “Enchanted,” “The Magic Touch,” and “Harbor Lights.” They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990. DANNY AND THE JUNIORS Danny and the Juniors began singing in the 1950s as teenagers in Philadelphia. In 1957, “At the Hop” went to #1 on the pop, country, and R&B charts and is the #23 rock and roll hit of all time according to Billboard Magazine. “Rock and Roll in Here to Stay” and “Twistin’ USA” were two of their other 11 charted singles. Danny and the Juniors toured in the Alan Freed Big Band Show, performed on American Bandstand more than 50 times and have travelled millions of miles and entertained millions of fans worldwide. Original members Joe Terry and Fred Maffei lead these members of the Vocal Group Hall of Fame onto the stage. THE SKYLINERS The Skyliners are a doo wop group from Pittsburgh that had a huge hit with their quintessential ballad “Since I Don’t Have You.” They appeared many times on American Bandstand and toured with Dick Clark’s Cavalcade of Stars, performed on many of Alan Freed’s rock and roll shows, and they were the first white act to reach #1 on the Cashbox R&B charts, which led to them performing eight times at the legendary Apollo Theatre. Their music has been featured in many movies, including Lethal Weapon II, La Bamba, and American Graffiti. Other hit singles were “This I Swear,” “Pennies From Heaven,” “It Happened Today,” and “Close your Eyes.” The Skyliners were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2002.

SAT, MARCH 2, 2019 AT 7PM

GARY TROXEL’S FLEETWOODS Gary Troxel’s Fleetwoods were the first group to have two #1 hits on the Billboard Charts in the same year, and the first mixed-gender trio with more one #1 hit. “Come Softly to Me” and “Mr. Blue” both reached #1 on the charts, two of the 11 hits enjoyed by the Fleetwoods. Hailing from Olympia Washington, other hits included “Graduation’s Here,” “Tragedy,” and “The Great Imposter.” They were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame and the Doo Wop Hall of Fame in 2006.

THE PASSIONS The Passions were formed in 1956 in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, with Jimmy Gallagher as their lead singer. Jim Gribble, also manager of The Mystics, presented them with their first hit, “Just to Be with You,” written by Paul Simon and Carole King. “Gloria” and “I Only Want You” also made the charts. Gallagher is also well known for his performances with The Legends of Doo Wop. CLEVELAND STILL AND THE DUBS Cleveland Still and the Dubs are best remembered for their doo wop classic “Could this be Magic.” This signature song resulted in their many tours with Alan Freed. Other hits included “Chapel of Dreams” and “Don’t Ask me to be Lonely.” Original member Cleveland Still leads the group on stage.

WHO’S WH0 IN THE CAST STEVE LANDES (Vocals, Rhythm Guitar, Harmonica, Piano, Original Broadway Cast) a life-long, second generation Beatles fan, Landes taught himself guitar at 10 by listening to Beatles records and by 13 was fronting a top 40 cover band in his native Philadelphia. At 17 he joined Beatlemania and further developed his musicianship, touring the world with the show. After “passing the audition” with the existing RAIN band members in 1998, his career was set. On one of his travels to England, he found himself at Liverpool’s Casbah Club, owned by pre-Ringo Beatles drummer Pete Best. Encouraged to get on stage, Landes belted out lead vocals to the Beatles rocker “Slow Down,” while Best sat in on drums. As a backup musician, Landes has performed alongside legendary 60s artists Peter Noone (Herman’s Hermits), Joey Molland (Badfinger), Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels, and Tiny Tim. As an actor, he appeared in the films Wedding Bell Blues, For Which He Stands, and Tim Burton’s Mars Attacks! Landes writes and records his own original music. www.steve-landes.com, facebook.com/steve.landes.rain. PAUL CURATOLO (Vocals, Bass, Piano, Guitar) The Beatles became Curatolo’s biggest influence as a child growing up with RAIN. At 10-years-old, his musical journey began when he taught himself the drums. He quickly adapted to guitar and piano

which drove him to write and record his own music. When he was 14, as a member of the pop band Wayward, he went on to record five albums. Until recently the band has toured the U.S. and was voted home town heroes in A.P. magazine (Alternative Press). Curatolo’s love for the Beatles has driven him to master the character of Paul McCartney down to every detail. From vocal inflections to turning the bass over to perform left-handed. Curatolo considers it an honor to pay tribute to his idol. AARON CHIAZZA (Drums, Percussion, Vocals) began playing music at the young age of five when his parents gifted him a drum set. This drum set did not last long under the strength of a kindergartner and eventually he moved into a full size instrument by early elementary school. Early yet important musical influences stemmed from a blend of past era funk, soul, jazz, rock, and others. From there he went on to study music in an academic setting through high school and college participating in jazz, symphonic, and percussion ensembles. Between original projects, writing, and shows, Chiazza also loves being an audio engineer and artist. You can follow his work and ventures with RAIN on his website: www.AaronChiazza.com ALASTAR McNEIL (Vocals, Lead Guitar, Guitar Synth) Born and raised on the island of Oahu, HI, McNeil grew up surrounded by musicians who played ukulele and guitar. These instruments would play a pivotal role in his life as he became an

ukulele luthier—for a time supervising a local factory—and eventually changed careers to fulfill the dream of being a full time musician. McNeil and his wife Miwa (herself a kihoalu or Hawaiian slack key guitarist) have played with the iconic band Kupaāina for years even as he earned a solid reputation for his instrumentation and adaptability playing with Honolulu bands doing everything from Irish to reggae, funk to classic rock, and even a local Beatles tribute. “Playing with RAIN has challenged and improved my ability to express myself not just as a musician but as an actor and entertainer as well. Nothing is more thrilling!” MARK BEYER (Keyboard, Percussion) began piano lessons at age eight, and at 12 was given special acceptance into a local University music school where he was privately trained in piano and music theory. At 14, he began experimenting with electronic keyboards and synthesizers from the 1970s, and played professionally in a

progressive rock band. As keyboard technology advanced, Beyer became known for his uncanny reproductions of elaborate sound textures, exotic instruments, and simulations of full orchestras. Beyer is the primary programmer and sound designer for the keyboards currently used in RAIN’s production. www.Beatlekeys.com Performers may change. Additional musicians may include: JOEY CURATOLO (Vocals, Bass, Piano, Guitar, Original Broadway Cast) grew up in a Brooklyn household where classical music and opera formed the soundtrack. A natural musician, he was infatuated with The Beatles, taught himself guitar at age 10 and played piano by ear at 16. After winning multiple McCartney sound-alike contests, Curatolo toured with the Broadway production of Beatlemania. He joined RAIN shortly after, and helped transform the band into the multimedia production it is today. In addition, he is an active singer/songwriter and studio musician. His

original Christmas song “Wishing You a Very Merry Christmas” is featured on Broadway’s Carols for a Cure, Volume 12 (to benefit BC/EFA) as well as the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s Hope for the Holidays charity album. When Universal Pictures needed a McCartney sound, they contacted Curatolo to record the song “Love Take Me Down” for the comedy Role Models. For Curatolo, performing on Broadway was a dream come true. JOE BITHORN (Vocals, Lead Guitar, Guitar Synth, Sitar, Original Broadway Cast) grew up in Manhattan and Long Island, where he was exposed to a variety of music including jazz, Latin, classical, and more. By age three, his musical father taught his children how to sing harmony. He was profoundly influenced by the experiences he had at Carnegie Hall through his Mom, who worked with the Festival Casals. Thanks to The Beatles’ appearance on Ed Sullivan, Bithorn took a strong interest in the guitar. Early influences include the band Cream, and Bithorn developed the ability to learn guitar parts by ear by age 14. By age 16, he was so proficient that he was recruited for studio sessions. While in high school, he and his brother formed the Bithorn Brothers Band, performing the early music of the Allman Brothers Band. Bithorn heard about an audition for Beatlemania and was hired for the touring production as George. After touring with the show in North America, Bithorn joined Rain in 1983 and has been touring the world ever since.

CHRIS SMALLWOOD (Keyboard, Percussion) fell in love with music as a young kid, but didn’t fall onto a piano bench until high school, when he broke his leg. Just two years later, he was invited to Kentucky’s prestigious Governor’s School for the Arts program. In 2008, Chris received a bachelor of music from Belmont University, and in 2010 earned his master of music from the University of Louisville. Smallwood has toured internationally with RAIN: A Tribute to the Beatles for over eight years, and loves sharing his passion for The Beatles’ music with fans all over the world. Smallwood currently serves as adjunct music faculty at Belmont University, and owns Mockingbird Musicians—a Nashville contracting service for live music and entertainment. He was appointed Music Director/Performer for the “Eat Your Science” tour, Chef Alton Brown’s live show. Smallwood released his first piano pop record, Out in the Open, which is available on iTunes. JIM IRIZARRY (Vocals, Rhythm Guitar, Piano, Harmonica) is from Chicago, IL, and began singing and playing the music of his favorite band, The Beatles, at the age of 12. He performed in local Chicago Beatle bands and learned the harmonica to master some of his early Beatle favorites. Years later Irizarry visited Liverpool for Beatle Week and made several appearances at the Cavern Club. He naturally captures the look and sound of Lennon and transforms himself through all eras of The Beatles, as

well as recreating John’s famous humor and onstage antics. RALPH CASTELLI (Drums, Percussion, Vocals, Original Broadway Cast) was born and raised in southern California, surrounded by a musically talented family, and by age six became passionate about playing drums. On that momentous night in February, 1964, when The Beatles first appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show, Castelli was hypnotized and knew playing drums was what he was born to do. Captivated by Ringo Starr and The Beatles that night, Castelli’s excitement continued to grow, and his dream would eventually become a reality. After touring and performing with numerous bands and pursuing his acting career, Castelli landed the role of Ringo Starr in the touring production of Beatlemania and was also cast as Ringo in Beatlemania: The Movie. His talent, drum techniques, humor, style and appearance were in his favor. Castelli joined RAIN in 1986 and was thrilled to be on Broadway.

MARK LEWIS (Founder, Manager, Original Keyboardist) As the managerial and creative mind that transformed RAIN from a 1970’s southern California bar band doing Beatles covers into an ultra-professional group, Lewis recruited the excellent musicians who would gel into RAIN’s long-standing line-up. He traces his love of the Fab Four to the Sunday night of February 9, 1964, when his generation was smitten by The Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show. Originally called REIGN, the band gained national fame, changed its name to RAIN and cut the soundtrack to the madefor-TV movie Birth of The Beatles (thanks to Dick Clark). An accomplished pianist at 13, having studied since age five, he began his career playing the Farfisa organ in teenage rock bands around his native Los Angeles. It was Lewis, the original keyboard player with RAIN, who worked out all of the musical parts and sounds that enabled RAIN to bring to life many songs that The Beatles themselves never performed live.
