A Note About the Plot

enny is Mark and Roger’s former roommate. With the help of his wealthy father-in-law, Benny has bought the building in which Mark and Roger live, and the lot next door that is inhabited by a group of homeless people. Benny wants to build a high-tech cyber-arts studio on the property. Toward this end, he plans to clear the homeless from the lot and evict all the tenants from the building, including Mark and Roger.

Mark’s former lover, Maureen, schedules a performance protest of Benny’s scheme for midnight on Christmas Eve. Benny offers a deal to Mark and Roger: If they convince Maureen to stop her protest, they can stay in the building rent-free. At the end of Act I, Maureen stages her performance. A riot erupts in the lot, which Mark videotapes. Then Benny padlocks the building, locking out all the tenants. Act II begins on New Year’s Eve as Mark, Roger and friends attempt to break back into the building. The rest of the act follows the events of the year.

BIOGRAPHIES . . . BUGS BUNNY Bugs Bunny is one of the most recognized cartoon characters in the world, whose signature phrase “What’s Up, Doc?” has long since entered the English language. Bugs’ first ‘reel’ appearance in front of his soon-to-be-adoring public was in A Wild Hare directed by Tex Avery. Since then, Bugs’ zany antics in hundreds of cartoon favorites have made him a legend throughout the world. This cool, collected, carrot-chomping rabbit is the unequivocal superstar of the Looney Tunes family. With never a ‘hare’ out of place he always manages to outsmart his adversaries, whoever they may be. He’s a real American icon who has graced the TV and cinema screens the world over. Bugs Bunny’s cartoons have twice been nominated for Academy Awards, and his Knighty Knight Bugs won a coveted Oscar. STATE THEATRE NEW JERSEY OFFERS SINCERE THANKS TO

PETER AND MAGGIE STAVRIANIDIS FOR THEIR GENEROUS SUPPORT OF STATE THEATRE NEW JERSEY

SUN, JUNE 4, 2017 AT 7:30PM

JAY LENO UNDERWRITTEN BY

PETER AND MAGGIE STAVRIANIDIS

This program is made possible in part through a grant by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, a partner agency of the National Endowment for the Arts. 67

JAY LENO

ABOUT THE ARTIST Acclaimed TV late night show host, admired stand-up comedian, best-selling children’s book author, much-in-demand corporate speaker, lovable TV and movie voice-over artist, pioneering car builder and mechanic, and philanthropist…it’s no wonder that Jay Leno is widely characterized as “the hardest working man in show business.” Leno’s late night television ratings domination included more than two decades of The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, winning every consecutive quarter of his hosting over the past 19 years. After resuming hosting the 11:35pm program following its onetime interruption, he made it once again the consistent and uninterrupted ratings leader for late night, once again leading all of the ensuing quarters handily, under the supervision throughout of executive producer Debbie Vickers. In the process, he has been honored by the Television Academy with an Emmy® for “Outstanding Comedy, Variety or Music Series.” The Tonight Show with Jay Leno has also taken home the trophy for “Favorite Late Night Show” in the annual TV Guide Awards determined by voting viewers, and he was recently installed in the Television Academy’s Broadcast Hall of Fame. As if night-time dominance were not enough, Leno has also succeeded in the newest entertainment arena, Jay Leno’s Garage, of which he is a producer as well as star. The NBC creation, which is viewed on CNBC, gained an international following on the Web, not to mention an Emmy Award® and two additional nominations for Outstanding Special Class–Short-For-

68

mat Nonfiction Programs. Leno, himself, is the recipient of the People’s Choice Award and other honors, including the Harris Poll selection as most popular star on television. Other personal highlights include his induction into the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences’ Broadcasting Hall of Fame, his 2014 reception of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts’, Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, the Hasty Pudding Award at Harvard University; an honor whose sole prior comedy/talk host recipient was Johnny Carson, and an honorary doctorate from his alma mater, Emerson College. Like Mr. Carson, Groucho Marx, and an elite group of entertainment figures, he has been invited to have his papers installed in the Library of Congress. He also received a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame (asking that it be placed in front of the Ripley’s Believe It Or Not Museum since it is where he was arrested for vagrancy when he first arrived in Hollywood.) He also has set several land speed records and became the first person to drive the pace car of all major NASCAR events. Having passed the torch of Tonight Show succession to Jimmy Fallon, Leno has increased his customary busy schedule of comedy performances in top venues around the United States and occasionally abroad. He also continues his web venture relating to his passion for automobiles and is in consideration of the many other applications of his time and talents which have been offered or which he is personally evolving. He interrupted these pursuits to make his first trip to Israel for the honor of presenting the Genesis Award, Israel’s equivalent of the Nobel Award, to Michael Bloomberg.

STATE THEATRE NEW JERSEY OFFERS SINCERE THANKS TO

CAROL JEFFERSON FOR HER GENEROUS SUPPORT OF THE STATE THEATRE AND KEITH SWEAT

KEITH SWEAT

UNDERWRITTEN BY

CAROL JEFFERSON This program is made possible in part through a grant by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, a partner agency of the National Endowment for the Arts. 73

KEITH SWEAT

ABOUT THE ARTIST Keith Sweat is a Harlem, N.Y born songwriter, record producer, vocalist, actor, and radio personality with a career that spans 24 years of record breaking and trail blazing contributions to the pop and R&B genre. He is coined the genius behind the New Jack Swing phenomenon of the late 1980’s. Keith Sweat’s timely transition to the R&B mecca of Atlanta in 1992 added “label impresario” to his roster of talents. Sweat has dominated the Pop and R&B worlds with an indefinable presence. His debut and now classic album Make It Last Forever sold more than three million copies, producing four R&B hit singles, including “I Want Her,” which also landed at #5 on the Pop charts. The album stats also include a nomination for the 1989 Soul Train Best R&B/Urban Contemporary Song of the Year award. Sweat has delivered five straight #1 albums, selling a worldwide total of 25 million records. His self-titled 1996 effort, Keith Sweat, gained quadruple platinum status. His critically acclaimed collaboration with fellow superstars Gerald Levert and Johnny Gill on the double platinum LSG, was launched a decade after he first landed in the music business. He has thrived as one of Atlanta’s first record industry moguls, building his own recording studio and discovering new artists such as Silk and Kut Klose—signing both multi-platinum groups to his Keia Record label. Sweat has become one of Atlanta’s leading mentors for young talent, its principle purveyor of R&B music. The unflappable Sweat points to his consistency as the key to his success and achievement of a dozen top 10 R&B singles including seven #1’s, four top five Pop singles, and frequenting Billboards Top Charts.

74

After being named Favorite Male R&B/ Soul Artist by the American Music Awards in 1997, Sweat celebrated his longevity with his 1998’s aptly titled album, Still in the Game. His 2008 album Just Me made waves on radio and at cash registers and endorsed his claims to remain “in the game.” Sweat released his 10th studio album Ridin Solo in 2010. This multi-talented artist masters his craft and expounds upon various interests that keep him fresh in the public’s eye. The state of Georgia authenticated Keith Sweat’s extraordinary talent in the music business with a coveted induction into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame in 2008. He has appeared on both the Martin show and the Wayans Brothers show, among others, and has starred in a handful of independent movies. Sweat’s initiation into the reality show craze, Keith Sweat’s Platinum House, yielded #1 ranking on the Centric network—of which, he was creator and executive producer. On the cusp of his third decade in the spotlight, Sweat has almost become a genre unto himself, his pleading ballads a mainstay of radio’s “Quiet Storm” format. As if in acknowledgement of that, Sweat hosts the #1 nighttime nationally-syndicated radio show, The Sweat Hotel. The live call-in program boasts 3 million listeners exchanging dialogue with Keith about matters of the heart. Like the steady beat of his up-tempo hits and tantalizing ballads, Keith Sweat, remains relevant—recently voted #11 on the list of the 20 Greatest R&B/Soul CD’s of all time for his epic album Make It Last Forever by the Georgia Informer magazine. Keith Sweat garners an impressive fan base in the fickle genre of Pop R&B and continues to redefine boundaries.

READ ACROSS AMERICA On March 2, State Theatre staff visited and read to students at the Roosevelt Elementary School in New Brunswick for Read Across America day, also known as Dr. Seuss’s birthday! Chief of External Affairs Anna Marie Gewirtz and her daughter Autumn read to kids at Roosevelt.

WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH State Theatre New Jersey recently celebrated Women’s History Month with a special women’s tea luncheon on stage on March 15, 2017. The event celebrated The State’s rich artistic legacy by highlighting some of the esteemed female artists who’ve performed on the stage over the years. Hosted by Trustee Wendy Wiebalk and Director of Major Gifts & Planned Giving Linda Van Derveer, the luncheon featured State Theatre Artist-in-Residence Glenis Redmond, who gave a dynamic reading of her poetry from her book Backbone—as well as an inspirational tribute to Maya Angelou. Innovative valve replacement surgery. Because you can’t be replaced. As New Jersey’s most extensive heart care network, RWJBarnabas Health performs more Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacements (TAVR) than any hospital or health care system in the state—and our outcomes far exceed national benchmarks in safety, life expectancy, and risks of complications, too. Available at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and Saint Barnabas Medical Center, patients usually go home only a few days after the procedure. For more information and to make an appointment with one of New Jersey’s top cardiologists, visit rwjbh.org/tavr
