WELCOME TO THE HISTORIC STATE THEATRE NEW JERSEY! Designed by renowned theatre architect Thomas W. Lamb and first opening as “Reade’s State Theatre” in 1921, the State Theatre began as a silent movie and vaudeville venue Through the years, it has been home to artists from all over the world, many of whom are some of the most famous female entertainers of today and yesterday
A HISTORY
In 1928, Radio-Keith Orpheum, also known as RKO, began operating the State Theatre As the “RKO State Theatre,” it entered upon its most successful period; during the dazzling years of the Golden Age of Hollywood, The State offered the biggest stars and pictures, the best-dressed ushers, and over 2,000 plush velvet seats Among the hundreds of first-run hits shown here were Ivanhoe, starring Elizabeth Taylor, and Old Maid, with Bette Davis The glamour in those days was not confined to celluloid; celebrities frequently made live guest appearances to promote their films or to help a worthy cause including Hedy Lamarr, who pitched war bonds in the 1940s Other female stars appearing in person at the theater in its early days included Barbara Stanwyck, Minnie Pearl, and Helen Traubel In 1988, when the State Theatre reopened as a performing arts center, female stars from every area of entertainment joined the list of performers In 1989, the State Theatre presented a double bill of Jazz legend Sarah Vaughan and Broadway’s Patti LuPone Other stars that followed soon after included singer and actress Rosemary Clooney, singer-songwriter k.d. lang, Roberta Flack, screen legend Debbie Reynolds, Mary Tyler Moore, Joan Rivers, and Carol Channing and Rita Moreno who appeared in Two Ladies of Broadway. In more recent years, stars have included Diana Ross, Regina Spektor, Melissa Etheridge, Liza Minnelli, Carol Burnett, Patti LaBelle, Pat Benatar, Diana Krall, Priscilla Presley, Lily Tomlin, and Martina McBride For more on the State Theatre’s history visit: STNJ.org/history

JOHNNY MATHIS
THE VOICE OF ROMANCE TOUR WED, MARCH 13, 2019 AT 8PM
27
JOHNNY MATHIS
ABOUT THE ARTISTS The fourth of seven children, John Royce “Johnny” Mathis was born on September 30, 1935 in Gilmer, Texas to Clem and Mildred Mathis. When he was a small boy, the Mathis family moved to Post Street in San Francisco. It was there that he learned an appreciation of music from his father Clem who taught him his first song, “My Blue Heaven.” At the age of eight, Mathis’s father purchased an old upright piano for $25, which wouldn’t fit through the front door when he brought it home. So that evening, he stayed up all night to watch his father dismantle the piano, move the pieces into the small living room of their basement apartment, and then reassemble it. Clem, who worked briefly as a musician back in Texas playing the piano and singing on stage, would continue to teach his son many songs and routines. Mathis had proven to be the most eager of the children to learn all about music. He sang in the church choir, school functions, community events, for visitors in their home, as well as amateur shows in the San Francisco area. He was also a successful track and field athlete, and was offered a chance to compete in the U.S. Olympic Trials. However, the same week he was set to try out for the trials Columbia Records called and offered him a recording contract. Ultimately, Mathis choose to go to New York to record his first album, which was released on July 16, 1956. Best-known for his supremely popular hits like “Chances Are,” “It’s Not For Me To Say,” and “Misty,” Mathis has recorded approximately 80 albums, six Christmas albums, and has sold millions of records worldwide. During his extensive career he has had three songs inducted into the Grammy® Hall of Fame, achieved 50 Hits on Billboard’s Adult Contemporary Chart,
28
and currently ranks as the all-time #6 album artist in the history of Billboard’s pop album charts. He has received five Grammy® Nominations, and in 2003 he was given the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. And recently in May 2017 he received an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts from his Alma Mater San Francisco State University. In addition to all this Mathis and his music have appeared in numerous films and television shows, including Lizzie, The Tonight Show, Silver Linings Playbook, Family Ties, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and Mad Men, just to name a few. In 2017 he released his 78th studio album titled Johnny Mathis Sings The Great New American Songbook, and debuted his “lost” 1981 album I Love My Lady, which was produced by Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards of the pivotal group CHIC. Mathis continues to be Columbia Records longest signed recording artist! In spite of a very busy tour schedule and many charity events, Mathis still finds time to enjoy a little free time. He was an avid tennis player until the late 1960s, when a good friend turned him on to his now life-long love of golf. He plays golf almost every day when he’s not traveling, and has even hosted his own golf tournament—The Johnny Mathis Seniors PGA Classic. He is also quite the gourmet chef thanks to his parents, who taught him how to cook at an early age. 2019 marks his 63rd anniversary as a recording artist, so what’s next for Mathis? “I don’t think about retiring. I think about how I can keep singing for the rest of my life. I just have to pace myself.”

artist and half of the unrivaled Simon & Garfunkel. He has also enjoyed a successful film career, published a book of poetry, and released 12 solo albums, the most recent being The Singer in 2012. Since then, he has been busy as a husband and father to his two sons, 26 year-old James and 11-year-old Beau Daniel. He is also an avid walker who has walked across Japan, the U.S. (celebrated in the 1997 concert DVD Across America), and now Europe.
ABOUT THE ARTIST Blessed with what the New York Times described as a “beautiful countertenor,” singer Art Garfunkel has made an indelible mark on the music world as both a solo
32
Garfunkel was originally revered for his Grammy®-winning, chart-topping songs and albums with partner and fellow NYC native Paul Simon. Their greatest hits collection—which includes “Mrs. Robinson,” “Scarborough Fair,” “The Sound Of Silence,” “The Boxer,” and “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” among others—is one of the biggest selling album ever. After Simon & Garfunkel parted ways in 1970, Garfunkel landed several major film
FRI, MARCH 15, 2019 AT 8PM
roles, including Carnal Knowledge (opposite Jack Nicholson), Catch 22, and Nicholas Roeg’s Bad Timing/A Sensual Obsession. His solo debut Angel Clare spawned the top 10 hit “All I Know.” His other solo albums include Breakaway (‘75; features the hit “I Only Have Eyes For You”), Watermark (‘78; featuring “[What A] Wonderful World” with James Taylor and Paul Simon), Fate For Breakfast (‘79), Scissors Cut (‘81), The Animals’ Christmas (‘86), Lefty (‘88), Garfunkel (greatest hits, ‘88), Up Till Now (‘93), Across America (‘97), Songs From A Parent To A Child (‘97), Everything Waits To Be Noticed (’03), Some Enchanted Evening (’07), and The Singer (2012). The late ‘80s brought two new challenges for Garfunkel: he published Still Water, a collection of poetry in ‘89, and began an amazing trek across America—on foot. But the ‘80s and ‘90s found Garfunkel doing what he does best: singing for an audience. “Taking on the fear and vulnerability of a
live show keeps you vital,” says Garfunkel, who relishes the opportunity to perform new and classic material for fans around the world. “I’m a singer trying to get away with a lucky job. I try to soothe, to lift... That’s my life.” Garfunkel earned his Bachelor of Arts degree at Columbia College, majoring in Art History; later he earned his Masters degree in Architecture at Columbia University. He lives in New York City with his wife Kim. Garfunkel is an avid reader and has chronicled every book he’s read since June 1968 on his website—1,210 in all. Garfunkel’s new book, What Is It All But Luminous (Notes From An Underground Man), was recently released by Alfred A. Knopf.

SAT, MARCH 16, 2019 AT 2PM & 8PM
PROGRAM NOTES ACT I The Garden of Prince Siegfried’s Castle Prince Siegfried has come of age and entered upon a new world of affairs of war and the burdens of manhood. It is the day for leaving behind the whims and caprice of youth. A happy day for the Prince, though touched by anxiety. The kindly jester and tutor who have been the Prince’s loving companions since his childhood are the first to congratulate him. He greets his companions and joyfully accepts the congratulations of all the residents of the Castle. The Prince’s subjects come from far and wide to take part in the festivities. They confer upon him the sword and scepter of authority and swear allegiance to their new ruler. His mother, the Queen Mother of the Realm, presents him with an arbalest as a gift and reminds him that the time has come to choose a bride and that he must make the fateful decision at tomorrow’s ball. He is eager to contemplate this life change in silence. The festivities continue, but the Prince is overcome by a desire to be alone, far from his guests. As he begins to search the contents of his heart he notices a flight of white swans heading toward the nearby lake. He is inspired and follows them there, disappearing into the night. ACT II A Lakeside The voyage to the lake takes the Prince into the depths of the forest. He approaches the Swans quietly and as he nears he sees something quite out of the ordinary. The Swans have stepped ashore and assumed human form! Siegfried lowers the crossbow, astonished with their striking beauty. He gathers his courage and reveals himself. Odette, the swan’s Queen tells him of their terrible curse. They are all at the mercy of the wicked sorcerer Rotbart and only by finding true love can the evil spell be lifted. Siegfried, overcome with love at first sight, swears to her an everlasting love. As the sun beings to dawn, Odette warns him that if he breaks his oath, nothing will be able to help them. The Prince is completely overcome by the incomparable and exquisite delica37
SWAN LAKE
cy of Odette, and swears that he will return and free her from the evil spell. As the sunlight touches them, the women transform back into Swans, cloaked in silence. —Intermission— ACT III The Great Hall of Prince Siegfried’s Castle The castle resounds to the clamor of festivities. Renowned Princesses from Hungary, Russia, Spain, Italy, and Poland are presented to the Prince. He must choose one of them as his bride, in order to strengthen his authority and consolidate his power. However, in none of these royal heiresses does he find a maiden comparable to Odette, to whom he has given his heart. He rejects them all. With an overwhelming blare of trumpets, a couple of new guests are announced. The evil sorcerer, Rotbart, enters in the guise of a noble knight, and following close behind is his daughter, Odylle, who looks remarkably like Odette. The similarity is so close, in fact, that Siegfried believes, if only for a split second, that it is Odette standing there before him. Odylle seizes the brief moment of illusion as an opportunity and will not allow him to find his senses. She becomes a bewitching temptress, luring him, hypnotizing him, and tricking him into confessing his undying love to her! In this hypnotic stupor, he proclaims that Odylle is to be his bride. Rotbard has triumphed! Siegfried has broken his oath to Odette, betraying her by professing love to another, thereby dooming Odette and the others to an eternity under Rotbart’s evil power. Suddenly a vision of the Swan Lake appears before Siegfried’s eyes, snapping him back into reality. He realizes the terrible mistake he has made. In despair he leaves the palace and hurries to Odette at the Lake. ACT IV The Lakeside Night falls again on the Lake. The swan maidens are anxious, for if the Prince does not fulfill his vow to set them free, they will be doomed to everlasting captivity. The sorcerer raises a raging storm to conceal the Swan Lake behind a screen of dark clouds, But the Prince rushes headlong through the storm to Odette. The sorcerer 38
attempts to conceal her from him, but no power can stop the young man whose heart is so full of love. The Prince overcomes all obstacles, and the spell cast by the evil sorcerer is dashed forever on the rock of true love.
ABOUT RUSSIAN NATIONAL BALLET The Russian National Ballet was founded in Moscow during the transitional period of Perestroika in the late 1980s, when many of the great dancers and choreographers of the Soviet Union’s ballet institutions were exercising their new-found creative freedom by starting new, vibrant companies dedicated not only to the timeless tradition of classical Russian Ballet but to invigorate this tradition as the Russians began to accept new developments in the dance from around the world. The company, then titled the Soviet National Ballet, was founded by and incorporated graduates from the great Russian choreographic schools of Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Perm. The principal dancers of the company came from the upper ranks of the great ballet companies and academies of Russia, and the companies of Riga, Kiev, and even Warsaw. Today, the Russian National Ballet Theatre is its own institution, with over 50 dancers of singular instruction and vast experience, many of whom have been with the company since its inception. In 1994, the legendary Bolshoi principal dancer Elena Radchenko was selected by Presidential decree to assume the first permanent artistic directorship of the company. Radchenko is the founder of the Russian National Ballet, and she has focused the Company on upholding the grand national tradition of the major Russian ballet works and developing new talents throughout Russia, with a repertory of virtually all of the great full works of Petipa: Don Quixote, La Bayadere, The Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, Raymonda, Paquita, Coppelia and La Sylphide, as well as productions of, among others, The Nutcracker, Sylvia, and La Fille Mal Gardee.

SIR JAMES GALWAY
ABOUT THE ARTISTS JAMES GALWAY Globally renowned as the supreme interpreter of the classical flute repertoire, Sir James Galway is a consummate performer whose appeal transcends all musical boundaries. With more than 30 million recordings sold worldwide, extensive international touring, frequent television appearances, tireless promotion of the arts, and his passionate work in music education, Galway has been a household name for decades. His uniquely expressive interpretations of the flute literature span an extensive range of genres, from classical masterworks to high profile commissions, and provide the benchmark standard for all modern flautists. He has also collaborated on film soundtracks, such as The Lord of the Rings, and partnered with popular artists, such as Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Joni Mitchell, and Sir Elton John. The diversity of Galway’s repertoire reflects his impressive musical range and has served to establish him as an artist of the very highest stature. A native of Northern Ireland, Galway began his flute studies in Belfast. At the age of 16, he was awarded a scholarship to the Royal College of Music, followed by studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Paris Conservatoire. At the age of 21, he embarked on his orchestral career in London’s major opera and symphonic orchestras. He took up the coveted position of solo flautist with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra under Herbert von Karajan in 1969, before becoming one of the very first flautists to establish an international solo career in 1975.

LADY JEANNE GALWAY An accomplished flutist, Lady Jeanne Galway continues to grace the international platforms with her virtuosity. One of the leading female flute soloists of the decade, Galway brings to the audience her unique style and elegance. Her touring schedule regularly takes her to many of the major cities in the U.S. to perform as soloist with orchestras, such as Chicago, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Seattle, Denver, and the National Symphony. Internationally, she has
appeared in the cultural capitals of the world, including London, New York, Milan, Rome, Vienna, Salzburg, Zurich, Dublin, Belfast, Tokyo, Beijing, and Singapore. Appearing regularly as the premiere flute duo partner with her husband Sir James Galway, the two delight audiences and bring a rare freshness to the platform, unique in the music world. In addition to her highly successful career as a soloist, Galway is also an accomplished chamber musician, touring regularly with various chamber ensembles. A strong advocate for the importance of music education in the school system, Galway has recently taken to public speaking at various International education conferences. The Galway Flute Academy is Sir James and Lady Galway’s educational platform, where they share their wisdom and experience with the musical generation of tomorrow. The Academy, which includes daily masterclasses, weekend residencies,

ABOUT THE ARTISTS CONCERT BAND AND SOLDIERS’ CHORUS The Concert Band and Soldiers’ Chorus are the oldest and largest of The U.S. Army Field Band’s performing components. Founded in 1946 and 1957 respectively, these two ensembles combine to present joint concerts on their national tours. They have performed in all 50 states and 30 foreign countries for audiences totaling hundreds of millions. The 60-member Concert Band and 29-member Soldiers’ Chorus perform regularly in some of the most famous concert halls in the world, and just as often in the humblest auditoriums in the smallest of communities. The joining of these two ensembles allows them to offer unparalleled versatility of programming, ranging from orchestral masterworks and operatic arias to Sousa marches, jazz classics, and Broadway musicals. The band and chorus also perform independently, and have recently shared the stage with ensembles, such as the Boston Pops, the Cincinnati Pops, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and the National Symphony Orchestra. In addition to their national tours, formal concerts, chamber recitals, and educational outreach, members of the Concert Band & Soldiers’ Chorus frequently represent the Army at formal and ceremonial functions, including the Presidential Inaugural Parade, presidential funerals, the Army All-American Bowl, and diplomatic efforts overseas. COLONEL JIM R. KEENE Colonel Jim R. Keene became the commander of The United States Army Field Band in January 2015. Prior to this assignment, he served as commander of the United States Military Academy Band at West Point, New York; commandant of the Army School of Music at Norfolk, Virginia; and at The United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own” in Washington, D.C.; the U.S. Army Europe Band and Chorus in Heidelberg, Germany; and the
Army Ground Forces Band in Atlanta, GA. COL Keene has led numerous performances for international military and civilian leaders, dignitaries, and heads of state. During his time as commander of the United States Military Academy Band at West Point, he led performances for the 125th anniversary of the Statue of Liberty, co-directed the music for A&E’s and the National Park Service’s A New Birth of Freedom special for the 150th commemoration of the Battle of Gettysburg, and a one-hour music special holiday production by the West Point Band aired on Fox News, A West Point Holiday. COL Keene led The U.S. Army Chorus in performances at the interments of former Presidents Ronald Reagan in Simi Valley, California, and Gerald R. Ford in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He has performed for seven U.S. presidents, at the 1996 Summer Olympic and Para-Olympic Games in Atlanta, the dedication of the National WWII Memorial, the one-year anniversary of 9/11 at the Pentagon, the Kennedy Center Honors, and the Military District of Washington’s production, Spirit of America. He has worked with the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra and Chorus and the National Symphony Orchestra, and has conducted the Dallas Wind Symphony, the Boston Pops Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. Prior to joining the Army, COL Keene served as assistant conductor of the Southern Methodist University (SMU) Symphony, orchestra conductor at the SMU International Conservatory Summer Festival in Taos, and music director of the Albuquerque Civic Light Opera. He holds a Master of Music degree in Orchestral Conducting from the Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University, and a Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance from the University of New Mexico. He is a violinist, fiddler, pianist, accompanist, and songwriter, and is a native of Albuquerque, New Mexico.

GLADYS KNIGHT
ABOUT THE ARTIST The great ones endure, and Gladys Knight has long been one of the greatest. Very few singers over the last 50 years have matched her unassailable artistry. This seven-time Grammy® winner has enjoyed number one hits in pop, gospel, R&B, and adult contemporary, and has triumphed in film, television, and live performance. Georgia-born, Knight began performing gospel music at age four in the Mount Mariah Baptist Church and sang as a guest soloist with the Morris Brown College Choir. Three years later, she won the grand prize on television’s Ted Mack’s Amateur Hour, and the following year, her mother Elizabeth Knight created the group consisting of Gladys, her brother Bubba, her sister Brenda, and her cousins William and Elenor Guest. They called themselves The Pips in honor of their cousin/manager, James Pip Woods. In 1959, Brenda and Elenor left the group, replaced by cousin Edward Patten and friend Langston George. The group was renamed Gladys Knight and The Pips, and following George’s departure in 1962, the classic line-up was in place. The group debuted their first album in 1960, when Knight was just 16. With Knight singing lead and The Pips providing lush harmonies and graceful choreography, the group went on to achieve icon status, having recorded some of the most memorable songs of the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. Top 20 hits, like “Every Beat of My Heart,” “Letter Full of Tears,” “I Heard it Through the Grapevine,” and “If I Were Your Woman,” set the stage for an amazing run in the mid-1970s, with Top 10 gold-certified singles like “Neither One of Us (Wants to be the First to Say Goodbye),” “I’ve Got to Use My Imagination,” “Best Thing to Ever Happen to Me,” and the number one smash “Midnight Train to Georgia” established Gladys Knight and The Pips as the premiere pop/R&B vocal ensemble in the world. The party kept rolling with hits like “On and On” from the Academy Award®-nominated soundtrack of Curtis Mayfield’s Claudine, the 1974 comedy about love in the inner 68
city. Knight enjoyed another number one hit in 1985 when she teamed with Stevie Wonder, Elton John, and Dionne Warwick on “That’s What Friends are For.” She and Stevie Wonder sang together again for the successful Frank Sinatra Duets II album, joining his voice for the song “For Once in My Life” in 1994. All told, Knight has recorded more than 38 albums over the years, including four solo albums during the past decade: Good Woman (1991); Just for You (1994); the inspirational Many Different Roads (1999); and At Last (2001). At Last showed the world that she still has what it takes to record a hit album, employing the talents of contemporary producers like Randy Jackson, Gary Brown and James D.C. Williams III, Jon John, Jamey Jaz, Keith Thomas, Tom Dowd, and Tiger Roberts. In 1995, Knight earned her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and the next year, Gladys Knight and The Pips were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Knight published an autobiography, Between Each Line of Pain and Glory (a line taken from her million selling recording “Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me”), in 1997, and the next year, she and The Pips were presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame. In 2004, Knight received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the annual BET Awards ceremony. Today, Knight and husband William, along with various other members of the family, oversee her busy career from the Las Vegas headquarters of Shakeji, Inc., her personal entertainment corporation. She is a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, performer, restaurateur, and businesswoman with a spiritual outlook on her life. Her faith in God has been the driving force behind all of Knight’s endeavors, guiding her through her many successes.
