FROM THE

FROM THE

Dear Friends,

Dear Friends,

We are pleased to present this State Theatre New Jersey “Report to the Community.” As stewards of this magnificent historic theater, we are happy to report that we had one of the most successful seasons in our history in fulfilling our mission, serving a more diverse audience than ever, and achieving a balanced budget for the seventh year in a row.

This report presents a snapshot of State Theatre New Jersey’s activities during the 2015-2016 Season. It was a year of tremendous successes and accomplishments throughout the organization—from programming and community outreach to finances.

PRESIDENT & CEO

In addition to our operational success, we achieved several other important milestones to prepare for the next chapter of State Theatre New Jersey’s rich history. The Board of Trustees adopted a five-year comprehensive strategic plan that sets forth a bold path for our programming, facilities, audience development, and organizational capacity going forward. We also recently rolled out a refreshed look and brand with the launch of our new state-of-the art, fully-responsive website. We accomplished these major initiatives in just one year with the generous and dedicated support of our ticket buyers, donors, and volunteers. We are truly fortunate to have so many dedicated patrons who have wholeheartedly embraced the power of live performance. Thank you for your ongoing and generous support. Sincerely,

CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD

Led by our mission to encourage and enable members of the community to pursue a life-long engagement with the performing arts, we presented a rich array of performances and educational activities for our diverse audiences. Performances featured internationally-acclaimed artists representing a broad spectrum of cultures and genres: Broadway musicals, comedy, rock, R&B, jazz, dance, family programs, and more. Classical music and pops continued to thrive at The State; 2015-2016 saw our highest-grossing and best attended Orchestra Series in the last five years. Another one of this past season’s significant achievements, State Theatre New Jersey joined other leading theaters across the state and the nation in offering Autism-Friendly Performances, which make it possible for audiences on the autism spectrum to experience the joy of live theater in a safe, welcoming environment. Opening with the Big Apple Circus, the series served nearly 2,300 people, setting the stage to expand the program in 2016-2017. This is truly an exciting time at State Theatre New Jersey. I would like to thank my fellow Board members for all their work on the new strategic plan and their commitment to the organization’s continued success.

Thomas J. Carto President & CEO

SEASON HIGHLIGHTS

It was an exciting season at State Theatre New Jersey. After a year in the making, we launched a brand-new website in June 2016. The new site was designed to enhance the customer experience with easy navigation on any size device, while featuring additional content such as our online magazine and podcasts. We also introduced a new logo to coincide with our new website. The look, as you will notice, features a new take on our classic “S.” This year we engaged over 196,000 people through our mainstage performances and education programs, and our variety of programs was no exception to seasons past. We saw the return of exhilarating artists like Trombone Shorty and Ringo Starr, an abundance of big Broadway tours, a thriving classical series, the hilarious Martin Short as the headliner for our annual Benefit Gala, as well as the State Theatre debut of talented artists such as comedian Kevin Hart and rocker Chris Cornell. This season also reminded us of the significant impact State Theatre New Jersey has had on the cultural life of our region as we celebrated the 10th year of our Family Day festival, which continues to bring nearly 6,000 people to downtown New Brunswick each year on Presidents’ Day. It was because of this and our many other community programs that the State Theatre was named the 2016 Not-For-Profit Community Leader of Distinction by the Middlesex County Regional Chamber of Commerce.

PERFORMANCES FOR SCHOOLS

SYMPHONY SCHOLARS

AUTISM-FRIENDLY PERFORMANCES

State Theatre New Jersey’s 2015-2016 Performances for Schools enthralled and inspired students with live performances of the very best in dance, music, and theater from around the world. Featuring 20 performances of nine different productions, the series offered something for every grade level, from Pre-K through grade 12.

A select group of middle school students in New Brunswick’s instrumental music program proudly wore the name of State Theatre New Jersey Symphony Scholars. Four classes from two schools had the thrill of attending a live, full-length symphony concert by a worldclass orchestra, followed by a special meet-and-greet reception with the conductor and soloist.

Shows such as Flamenco Fire, the National Circus and Acrobats of the People’s Republic of China, Nutcracker, and The Very Hungry Caterpillar spanned a wide range of cultures and traditions. The State’s Keynotes performance guides helped teachers make connections between the performances and other curriculum areas.

Students received thorough preparation through workshops, a study guide, and a CD of the music for home listening. A follow-up workshop led participants in a reflection on the experience.

One of the 2015-2016 Season’s most exciting events was the inauguration of State Theatre New Jersey’s Autism-Friendly Performance Series. The program provides a welcoming, safe, and judgment-free environment for people on the autism spectrum to enjoy live theater. Special accommodations include modulated lighting and sound, a designated quiet area, and a relaxation of the customary rules of theater etiquette.

The Autism-Friendly program opened with the Big Apple Circus, one of three shows in the series. In all, the State Theatre presented 14 school and public performances, with total attendance of 2,280.

COMMUNITY RESIDENCY Glenis Redmond returned for her eighth season as State Theatre New Jersey’s poet-in-residence. Her busy schedule comprised 89 workshops, informances, and poetic conversations at sites ranging from schools and senior centers to residential treatment facilities and youth shelters. The heart of the program featured in-depth writing workshops with a core group of underserved and atrisk students and adults . Some had the opportunity to share their work at a public poetry reading, where the variety of voices—young, old, black, white, Asian, Latino, well-to-do, underprivileged— spoke eloquently to the power of the arts as a common language uniting all people.

3,500 PEOPLE AT 34 SITES

NEW BRUNSWICK LATINO OUTREACH One of State Theatre New Jersey’s major initiatives is directed at New Brunswick’s large Latino population. During the 2015-2016 Season, we increased our visibility at school and neighborhood events and significantly expanded our network of local community, school, municipal, and business partners. In association with the New Brunswick schools, we presented a free family performance of bilingual children’s band 123 Andrés, and distributed complimentary tickets to several State Theatre New Jersey family performances. To promote these events, the theater created bilingual (Spanish and English) posters and flyers.

FREE SUMMER MOVIES In 2015-2016, thanks to sponsorship support, State Theatre New Jersey began offering its summer movies free of charge. Nearly 4,900 children and adults flocked to morning and evening screenings of four family-friendly films, including favorites such as Penguins of Madagascar and Big Hero 6. The movies attracted large numbers of people from the local Latino community, including New Brunswick’s Play S.A.F.E. summer recreation program and a significant number of children and families from the neighborhoods surrounding the State Theatre.

FAMILY DAY

MILK & COOKIES

Celebrating its 10th year in 2015-2016, State Theatre New Jersey’s Family Day festival drew 5,500 children and adults looking for a fun way to spend the Presidents Day holiday together. Along with the main event, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, they enjoyed a delightful day packed with performances, workshops, crafts, games, a photo booth, food, face painting, and more—even the Philadelphia Zoo! The festival encompassed the State Theatre as well as neighboring venues: George Street Playhouse, Crossroads Theatre, and United Methodist Church. Most events were free of charge, making it truly a family-friendly experience.

Milk & Cookies, State Theatre New Jersey’s free music and storytelling series, introduces children ages 3-8 to the joy and immediacy of live performance. The 2015-2016 Season featured 12 performances on six Saturdays—three programs each in the fall and spring. The engaging and interactive shows took place in the Heldrich Room (the theater’s upstairs lobby), a cozy space that invites kids and their families to feel right at home. Along with the fun, Milk & Cookies served as a gentle lesson in theater etiquette to help children grow up to become good audience members.

State Theatre New Jersey’s Education and Outreach activities are a reflection of our core commitment to making performing arts experiences accessible to our entire community—especially to traditionally underserved populations, such as at-risk students, senior citizens, and people on the autism spectrum. Each program is thoughtfully designed with the needs and interests of the intended audience in mind.

PARTNERSHIPS & COLLABORATIONS

State Theatre New Jersey is a vital, active presence in the community. We have developed meaningful relationships with schools, social service organizations, businesses, governmental agencies, artists, and arts organizations to enrich the lives of people in New Brunswick and beyond.

NEW BRUNSWICK PUBLIC SCHOOLS received numerous free State Theatre education and outreach services, including artist residency workshops, the Symphony Scholars program, and admission for thousands of students to our schoolday performances. The theater also provided students with valuable volunteer opportunities. NEW BRUNSWICK ORGANIZATIONS, including the Puerto Rican Action Board, New Brunswick Tomorrow, New Brunswick Youth Services System, Senior Citizens Resource Center, Middlesex County College New Brunswick, and Joseph Kohn Rehabilitation Center, helped connect us to the local community—especially the city’s large Latino population. JOHNSON & JOHNSON, whose corporate headquarters is based in New Brunswick, hosted its annual stockholders meeting at the State Theatre for the fourth time in State Theatre history. EDEN AUTISM SERVICES partnered with State Theatre New Jersey on the new Autism-Friendly Performances Series, offering valuable staff training and consultation. 10

PRODUCTION AND STAGE IMPROVEMENTS Ongoing technical improvements and upgrades help ensure that State Theatre patrons have the best possible experience at our events. In 2015-2016 we acquired new, state-of-the-art projection equipment—including retractable screens—to significantly boost the quality and versatility of video systems throughout the venue. Behind-the-scenes enhancements included new stage equipment, side curtains, and expanded storage areas. VETERANS AND THEIR FAMILIES received over 1000 donated tickets for various performances in FY16. Donated tickets were given through the Veteran Ticket Foundation’s website VetTix. org, a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded by veterans dedicated to support and honor the U.S. military community, veterans, and their families. STUDENTS received significant discounts on a variety of State Theatre New Jersey performances through the Students Meet the Arts program. In 2015-2016, 2,200 students took advantage of this opportunity. NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS received 2,445 free tickets to State Theatre New Jersey performances in 2015-2016. Nonprofits who used the State Theatre for their events—among them the Share and Care Foundation and the Federation of India Associations—received a significant discount on venue rental.

RUTGERS UNIVERSITY PARTNERS included Mason Gross School of the Arts, Department of Africana Studies, Department of English, School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, Association of Indians at Rutgers, and Rutgers University African American Alumni Association.

We installed new curtains and lighting in the windows above the marquee, creating a more striking visual impression for our audience even before they walk through our doors.

NEW JERSEY ARTS ORGANIZATIONS such as George Street Playhouse, Crossroads Theatre Company, American Repertory Ballet, and coLAB Arts participated in programs including Family Day and the artist residency. State Theatre New Jersey continued to be one of New Jersey Symphony Orchestra’s main venues; performances included pops and live-music film concerts co-produced with our organization.

VOLUNTEERS PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE AT THE STATE THEATRE. THIS SEASON OVER 150 VOLUNTEERS LOGGED ALMOST 2,000 HOURS. 11

NEW WEBSITE LAUNCH In June 2016, State Theatre New Jersey was thrilled to launch our new state-of-the-art website, built by a leading web developer for arts organizations worldwide. Reflecting our standing as a premier venue for the live performing arts, the website offers a more engaging user experience, a fully-responsive design that adjusts to any web browser or mobile viewing device, and an extensive platform for institutional storytelling.

WEEKLY RADIO SHOW

MEDIA PARTNERSHIPS

On September 17, 2015, we launched All Access with State Theatre New Jersey, a weekly radio show featuring artist interviews, behind-the-scenes stories, upcoming events, and more.

In 2015-2016, State Theatre New Jersey expanded its partnerships with some of the most prominent media outlets in the region. Magic 98.3 continued as our Official Radio Station, providing over $300,000 in promotional support. In the first-ever relationship of its kind, NJ101.5 provided invaluable support as our Broadway Series media sponsor. We continued our relationship with longstanding media sponsor New Jersey Advance Media and their affiliated brands—The Star-Ledger (our Official Newspaper) and NJ.com (title sponsor of our new Social Media Center). (From another partner station, WDHA host Terrie Carr above.)

In the 2015-2016 Season the show aired on WCTC 1450 AM on Thursdays from 6pm-7pm. Guests included illusionist Criss Angel, singer/actress Megan Hilty, the legendary Paul Anka, and Chef Robert Irvine, among others.

STATE THEATRE MAGAZINE

For more than two decades, State Theatre’s Pre-Performance Insights have given audience members a deeper understanding, appreciation, and enjoyment of our symphony, dance, and Broadway performances. In 2015-2016, recognizing the changes in the way people take in information in this digital age, we made the switch from live pre-show lectures to online podcasts, making the information available for people to enjoy at their convenience. Podcasts feature expert lectures and behind-the-scenes interviews. In 2015-2016, we launched the program with 10 podcasts, which attracted nearly triple the average number of attendees as the previous season’s live lectures.

One of the features of the new website is the State Theatre Magazine. An online resource for content, the Magazine includes insights about upcoming shows and artists, behind-the-scenes material, recent performance reviews, artist Q&As, and much more.
