Straight No Chaser

About the Artist STRAIGHT NO CHASER If the phrase “male a cappella group” conjures up an image of students in blue blazers, ties, and khakis singing traditional college songs on ivied campuses…think again. Straight No Chaser (SNC) are neither strait-laced nor straight-faced, but neither are they vaudeville-style kitsch. As original member Randy Stine comments, “We take the music very seriously; we just don’t take ourselves too seriously.” In the process, they are reinventing the idea of a cappella on the modern pop landscape. Originally formed over a dozen years ago while students together at Indiana University, the group has reassembled and reemerged as a phenomenon—with a massive fanbase, more than 20 million views on YouTube, numerous national TV appearances, and proven success with two holiday releases, 2008’s Holiday Spirits, 2009’s Christmas Cheers, as well as With a Twist. In an era when so much pop music is the product of digital processing and vocal pro-tooling, Straight No Chaser is the real deal—the captivating sound of 10

unadulterated human voices coming together to make extraordinary music that is moving people in a fundamental sense…and with a sense of humor. The group originally came together in the fall of 1996 at IU, basically as “10 guys who happened to be good friends who also liked to sing.” Choosing the members carefully for personality as well as vocal talent—Stine, Mechling, Jerome Collins, David Roberts, and Walter Chase remain from the original lineup—SNC set itself apart from other a cappella groups with its contemporary repertoire and dynamic approach, quickly headlining concerts both in Bloomington and on road dates. SNC recorded three independent albums, and John Mellencamp even invited the group to his home for a private performance. When the founders began graduating in 1999 and went on to jobs mostly outside of music, they chose replacements and established SNC as an ongoing group on campus with future generations of ambitious IU undergrads. More than 50 members have passed through the group’s ranks so far. Such was the impact SNC made at IU that the school hosted a 10th anniversary reunion show for the original lineup in 2006, and when Stine posted clips from a 1998 concert on YouTube, SNC’s fan base grew exponentially. In 2007 alone, the group’s version of “The 12 Days of Christmas” was viewed more than seven million times. Today that number has surpassed 11 million, and the group’s cumulative YouTube views clock in at more than 25 million. Among those viewers was Atlantic Chairman/CEO Craig Kallman, who found SNC’s music “brilliant, fresh and totally compelling.” Kallman e-mailed Stine, who initially thought it was a prank but thought otherwise when he was whisked to Los Angeles to meet with the label chief. A few days later, the entire group was in New York City to sign its recording deal. The current incarnation of SNC includes later members of the group, including Michael Luginbill, Seggie Isho, Don Nottingham, and Tyler Trepp. “A music career was definitely not on my radar; getting the guys back together, not just for someone’s wedding or bachelor party, but to spend the majority of the year together touring and recording, is a dream come true.” Stine says. “I pinch myself all the time and hope it continues and becomes a longstanding career.”

Huey Lewis and the News “Sports” 30th Anniversary Tour

OFFICIAL MEDIA SPONSOR

This program is made possible in part through a grant by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts.

Huey Lewis and the News

About the Artist HUEY LEWIS AND THE NEWS Huey Lewis was born a long time ago in New York City. He moved to Marin County, California when he was 4-years-old (better sandboxes!). At the tender age of 13, he went east to boarding school at the Lawrenceville School in New Jersey, where he began to play the harmonica. After graduating, he hitch-hiked throughout western Europe playing his harmonica for a year, and then attended Cornell University for a year and a half, where he played in bands, and went to some classes. After dropping out of Cornell, Huey moved back to California where he soon joined the country-rock band Clover. Clover played three or four sets a night, five or more nights a week for six years before being signed by Phonogram Records in London. They lived in London, recorded two records in Wales, disbanded and moved back to San Francisco where in 1977 Huey began to assemble what would be ‘The News’ with Johnny, Bill, Sean, Chris, and Mario. Their first record was released in January of 1980.

Huey is in show business, and so will do almost anything for attention or money, (usually in that order), and to that end he has played Billy Flynn in the musical Chicago on Broadway, filmed the movie Duets with Gwyneth Paltrow, and guest starred on the sitcom Hot in Cleveland several times. He has never appeared on Dancing with Stars or Celebrity Apprentice. He has won many awards and accolades, and he’d love to tell you about them sometime. 2013 marks the 30th anniversary of one the most influential and celebrated albums in pop / rock history. Peaking at #1 on the Billboard Charts, selling over 10 million copies worldwide, a Grammy® Award, and a Diamond Award in Canada, Sports is the anthem of a generation. Over half of the album’s songs (“The Heart of Rock & Roll,” “Heart & Soul,” “I Want a New Drug,” “Walking on a Thin Line,” “If This Is It”) were huge hit singles. They have memorable hooks, and an economical precision. Sports has struck a chord with audiences of all ages and persuasions. So many people have special memories associated with this unique collection of songs. Huey Lewis and the News are releasing a special digitally remastered 30th Anniversary edition of the album, with live bonus tracks. In 2013, Huey Lewis and the News are commemorating the milestone with their “Sports” 30th Anniversary World Tour. Fans will hear the band perform the songs from “Sports,” plus many other hits and surprises. Huey Lewis and the News are: Huey Lewis (vocals and harmonica), Johnny Colla (saxophone, guitar and vocals), Bill Gibson (drums, percussion and vocals), Sean Hopper (keyboards and vocals), Stef Burns (guitars and vocals), John Pierce (bass), Marvin McFadden (trumpet), Rob Sudduth (tenor saxophone), and Johnnie Bamont (baritone saxophone).

CHICAGO

This program is made possible in part through a grant by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts.

Chicago

About the Artist CHICAGO Starting in 1967, well before all the hits started flowing, Chicago established a reputation for its powerful live show. Fueled by a passion for music, Chicago’s members exploded the conventions of what rock music could or should be. The result was a groundbreaking new form, played by extraordinarily talented musicians. Early fans like Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin were sufficiently impressed—they took the group out on their respective tours. Once the group began making records, fans rewarded the group with record sales of 100,000,000, 21 Top 10 singles, five consecutive Number One albums, 11 Number One Singles, and 5 Gold singles. An incredible 25 of their 33 albums have been certified platinum. To date, Chicago is the first American band to chart Top 40 albums in five decades—a landmark accomplishment. Initially called “The Big Thing,” they hit the Midwest club circuit in 1967. In 1968, they took the name “Chicago Transit Authority,” moved to Los Angeles and signed to Columbia Records.

Chicago Transit Authority, their double-LP debut (April, 1969), was an underground hit whose sales were fueled by their incessant touring. They simplified their name on the liner notes of the CTA album, and from that point on, the band was called Chicago. Chicago II (January, 1970), another two-record set, contained their first two Top 10 hits, “Make Me Smile,” and “25 or 6 to 4.” Their debut album held two more belated hits and also two of the band’s most requested songs, “Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?” and “Beginnings.” A third double album, Chicago III (January, 1971) consolidated their success. Chicago’s historic, four-disc boxed set live album, Chicago at Carnegie Hall (October, 1971), marked the first time a rock and roll band played at Carnegie Hall. Chicago V (July, 1972) topped the charts for nine weeks and spawned the gold single, “Saturday In The Park.” Chicago VI (June, 1973) was Number One for five weeks and contained the hits “Feelin’ Stronger Every Day” and “Just You ‘N Me,” the latter a Number One in Cash Box and another gold single. Chicago VII (March, 1974) was yet another Number One LP whose

Tue, May 14, 2013 at 8pm

hits included “(I’ve Been) Searchin’ So Long,” “Call On Me,” and “Wishing You Were Here.” Chicago VIII (March, 1975) had the group’s fourth straight chart topper, the nostalgic hit, “Old Days.” It’s no small wonder that Chicago IX - Chicago’s Greatest Hits (November, 1975) eventually sold five million copies. But it was Chicago X (June, 1976), the recipient of three Grammy® Awards, that featured the band’s biggest hit of the 1970’s: the worldwide Number One “If You Leave Me Now.” The lovely ballad catapulted Chicago into the highest levels of popular success. Another ballad, “Baby, What A Big Surprise,” was the major hit off Chicago XI (September, 1977). Chicago released their 33rd record in 2012 with their third album of holiday music, titled O Christmas Three. The album features special guests Dolly Parton, America, Steve Cropper, and BeBe Winans, and was produced by veteran producer Phil Ramone, one of the most respected and prolific music producers in the recording industry (Bob Dylan, Frank Sinatra, Madonna, Elton John, Paul McCartney).

This program is made possible in part through a grant by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts.

Summerland Tour 2013

About the Artists EVERCLEAR Art Alexakis’ clear-eyed willingness to confront life’s darker margins has been a hallmark of Everclear’s output ever since Everclear’s independently released 1993 debut World of Noise. The band’s relentless touring regimen and D.I.Y. promotional tactics helped to set the stage for the platinum-level breakthrough of 1995’s Sparkle and Fade, which spawned the hits “Santa Monica” and “Heroin Girl,” while establishing Everclear as a popular live attraction and Alexakis as an engaged and articulate media presence. The band’s ascendancy continued with 1997’s So Much for the Afterglow, which produced the radio hits “Everything to Everyone,” “I Will Buy You A New Life,” and “Father of Mine.” Alexakis continued to explore new creative challenges on such subsequent Everclear releases as 2000’s two-part Songs from an American Movie, Vol. 1: Learning How to

Smile (which yielded a major hit in “Wonderful”) and Songs from an American Movie, Vol. 2: Good Time for a Bad Attitude, 2003’s Slow Motion Daydream, and 2006’s Welcome to the Drama Club. The Vegas Years (2008) was a memorable set of cover tunes, while In A Different Light (2009) and Return to Santa Monica (2011) found Alexakis and company revisiting and reinterpreting items from the Everclear songbook. LIVE The York, Pennsylvania legends burst on to the burgeoning alternative scene in 1991 with their major label debut, Mental Jewelry. The band—lead guitarist Chad Taylor, bassist Patrick Dahlheimer, drummer Chad Gracey, and founding vocalist Ed Kowalczyk—infused heartfelt melodies with raw energy for an inimitable style that stood out from the early nineties pack. Live’s sophomore set, Throwing Copper, solidified their status as bona fide superstars though. After 52 weeks it reached #1 on the Billboard Top 200 and eventually surpassed sales of 10 million in merely two years. Rolling Stone and MTV both dubbed the album “One of the 25 Greatest Rock Albums of All-Time,” while tastemakers from Spin to The New York Times lauded it with equal praise. Upon release, its 1997 follow-up Secret Samadhi immediately shot to #1 on the Billboard Top 200 and eventually went six-times platinum. However, on The Distance to Here in 1999, Live turned into an international powerhouse and jumped from arenas into stadiums all over the globe driven by the smash “The Dolphin’s Cry.” V and Birds of Pray followed, continuing to expand their legacy and satiate the rabid and faithful fan base that they had amassed over nearly two decades. FILTER Shoving a fist in the face of tradition has been Filter’s modus operandi since the release of their self-produced debut album,

Short Bus. The album’s rough-around-theedges production consisted of inebriated answering machine samples, lavish bass lines, and jagged guitars set to a backdrop of drum machines punctuated by the unfurling of Richard Patrick’s vocal prowess and signature roar. Patrick, Filter’s magnetic, profoundly intelligent nucleus and frontman jubilantly admits that his creative process is unorthodox, whether he’s staring down and conquering new technology or coalescing with new bandmate and co-conspirator Jonny Radtke on Filter’s current release, The Sun Comes Out Tonight. The album’s synthesis of tools from the band’s past and brand new attributes facilitate the stereophonic assault that only Filter circa 2013 can deliver. SPONGE Sponge has proven to be one of the Motor City’s heaviest hitters after gaining interna-

tional notoriety with their debut album Rotting Piñata (Sony). Emerging from Detroit with hits like “Plowed” and “Molly (16 Candles)” Sponge received massive airplay on radio stations from coast to coast and were in heavy rotation on MTV. Both “Plowed” and “Molly” hit #5 on Billboard’s Modern Rock Charts, catapulting “Rotting Piñata” to Gold, and ultimately Platinum status. Sponge’s follow up CD, the critically lauded Wax Ecstatic (Columbia) scored additional top ten Billboard hits including “Wax Ecstatic” and “Have You Seen Mary?” The band’s music was also featured in popular movies The Craft, Chasing Amy, Mall Rats, and Empire Records. Sponge’s star continued to rise with network appearances on The Late Show with David Letterman and the Conan O’Brien Show.

Kris Kristofferson

This program is made possible in part through a grant by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts.

Kris Kristofferson

About the Artist KRIS KRISTOFFERSON is a Country Music Hall of Famer who ranks among the most versatile of American talents. He’s been a Golden Gloves boxer, a Rhodes scholar, a college football player, an acclaimed actor, a military officer, a helicopter pilot, a Grammy®-winner, a screw-up, and an icon, and now he finds himself releasing the third Don Was-produced album in a twilight years trilogy. Feeling Mortal follows 2009’s Closer To The Bone and 2006’s This Old Road in examining hard-won grace. “Wide awake and feeling mortal,” he writes on the title track. “At this moment in the dream/ That old man there in the mirror/ And my shaky self-esteem.” “Going back to the beginning, the songs have been reflections of where I was at that point in my life,” he says. “I always try to be as honest as I can in the songwriting, otherwise there’s no point in doing it: I might as well be doing an advertising job or something. And what I’m finding, to my pleasant surprise at this age, is that I’m more inclined to laughter than tears. I hope I’ll feel this creative and this grateful until they throw dirt over me.” Kristofferson did not always imagine this would be so. “If I look like a mean old man, that’s what I am,” he sang, back when he was still immortal and when he was sometimes a mean-feeling younger man. But now he’s mostly truthful and thankful, as he sings, “For the laughter and the loving/ That I’m living with today.” In the Nashville beginning, Kristofferson threw away a promising military career in favor of life as what he sometimes calls, “A songwriting bum.” He had excelled at most everything he’d ever tried, save for singing and songwriting, but it was the singing and the writing that called to him. He wound up penning classics including “Me and Bobby McGee,” “Help Me Make It Through the Night,” “Sunday Morning Coming Down,” and “For The Good Times,” as well as a slew of other empathetic, incisive gems. Kristoffer-

son—along with contemporaries Tom T. Hall, Mickey Newbury, Willie Nelson, and John Prine—enhanced the scope of country music songwriting, focusing on layering, nuance, empathy, and emotional truth. “A major reason for Kris’ enduring popularity is that he’s always been very honest and open about revealing his inner life,” says producer Don Was, who has worked with Kristofferson for the past 17 years. “‘Sunday Morning Coming Down’ is a brutally frank, first-person narrative that just happens to hit a common nerve among millions of people, and that’s why Kris is such a great artist. I suspect a whole lot of folks will be able to relate to Feeling Mortal, now and for years to come. It’s totally in keeping with the body of Kris’ oeuvre.” Kristofferson and Was spent three days recording Feeling Mortal, cutting 20 songs and picking 10, then bolstering the basic tracks with stellar instrumental work from guitarist Mark Goldenberg, pedal steel master Greg Leisz, keyboardist Matt Rollins, violinist and vocalist Sara Watkins, bassist Sean Hurley, and drummer Aaron Sterling. They emerged with a piece of work that Was suggests is “One of Kris’ finest albums.” Kristofferson isn’t one to arm-wrestle with his own legacy, or to set his truths of today against the truths of his old-and-gone immortal self, but he’s pleased that a life that has been sustained by the product of his own imagination remains fruitful. Above all, Kristofferson is happy to be happy, grateful to be grateful, and wholly unwilling to take the credit for the wondrous way it’s all worked out. In the end, Feeling Mortal is a melodic note of gratitude, from creator to Creator. “God Almighty, here I am,” he sings. “Am I where I ought to be? I’ve begun to soon descend, like the sun into the sea/ And I thank my lucky stars, from here to eternity/ For the artist that You are/ And the man you made of me.”

Happy Together Tour 2013 The Turtles Featuring Flo and Eddie Chuck Negron (formerly of Three Dog Night) Gary Puckett and the Union Gap Mark Lindsay (former lead singer of Paul Revere & the Raiders) Gary Lewis and the Playboys

This program is made possible in part through a grant by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts.

Happy Together Tour 2013

About the Artists THE TURTLES featuring Flo and Eddie Very few rock performers have remained as vital through the 1960’s, 70s, 80s, and 90s as have Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman. Initially they made their mark with the Turtles, then they joined Frank Zappa’s Mothers of Invention, and then they glided into their own Flo & Eddie persona, dishing out records that have encompassed a multitude of personalities. Two guys from Westchester. The one with the curly hair and glasses, and the other with the beard. That’s how Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan (A.K.A. Flo and Eddie) refer to themselves. Two slightly bewildered kids thrust into the fast lane of rock ‘n’ roll stardom hits, fame, national tours, hanging out with the Beatles, joining the Mothers of Invention, acting in the 200 Motels movie, and on and on...two guys from Westchester. They set their sights on the adjacent South Bay area (Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach, Torrance) and quickly found themselves winners of several battle of the bands competitions that resulted in a residency at Reb Foster’s (a local DJ) Revelaire Club. It was here that demands were made upon them to learn the various hit recordings of stars like the Coasters, Sonny and Cher, the Righteous Brothers, and others for whom they would occasionally become the backup band. In 1964, the Beatles and the whole English Invasion took effect. Volman and Kaylan put down their saxes, took up the vocals more ardently and the Crossfires dropped their entire repertoire of surf instrumentals and grew their hair long. They were so taken with this change of identity, that it was not uncommon for them to show up at the South Bay Bowl, spewing forth English accents and claiming they were Gerry and the Pacemakers. Despite this response, and their following at the Revelaire, frustration set in. The members weren’t in high school anymore, two were married, and the band wasn’t earning enough money. On the night they were submitting their resignation from the Revelaire and about

to break up, they were approached by Ted Feigin and Lee Lasseff who signed them to a brand new, nameless record label, later to be called White Whale. It was time for a name change as well. The group liked “The Half Dozen,” or “Six Pack,” but opted for Reb Foster’s suggestion, The Turtles. It was exactly the same band and the same songs—one week at the Revelaire they were the Crossfires, the next week they were the Turtles. It wasn’t long before the release of the Turtles first single, their arrangement of a Bob Dylan song, “It Ain’t Me Babe.” It was an immediate hit—climbing into the Top Five nationally—quickly establishing the Turtles as a force of their own. Their first concert appearance was before 50,000 kids at the Rose Bowl, opening for Herman’s Hermits. CHUCK NEGRON The world was introduced to Chuck Negron and Three Dog Night in 1969 by the breakthrough–and the band’s first million seller One. Driven by Negron’s solo lead vocals on four million selling singles, three #1 records , (one which topped the charts for six weeks, “Joy To The World,”) five top 5 hits and seven top 40 hits, Negron put and kept Three Dog Night on the charts for six years. His soaring, soulful, four octave range and unique vocal styling became a part of the American landscape. His gut wrenching performance on the band’s follow up hit to “One,” “Easy To Be Hard” is now a pop classic, as is his beautiful and smooth vocal on “Old Fashioned Love Song.” Negron’s unmistakable voice exclaiming “Jeremiah Was A Bullfrog” on the multiGrammy® nominated and 1971 Record Of The Year, “Joy To The World” is today a part of Americana, securing a place for Negron as one of the great singers in rock and pop. While Negron was with Three Dog Night they had a phenomenal 18 consecutive top 20 hits, 21 top 40 hits, eight top 10 hits and four number one hits—not to mention five top 10 albums and 11 top 20 albums. “We were a selfcontained band who performed all the music on our records,” Negron explained. “We

picked all the songs, arranged them and were totally involved in production. We never had an A&R person or any record company interference. The band contractually had artistic control.” Few bands were as popular in concert. They pioneered stadium extravaganzas, prompting Rolling Stone Magazine in its 1972 cover story to exclaim “More Gold Than The Stones!” “Bigger Crowds Than Credence!” “Fatter Purses Than Elvis!” Some of their opening acts were the likes of Rod Stewart, Aerosmith, ELO, and co-headliner billing with Led Zeppelin. GARY PUCKETT AND THE UNION GAP was one of the most successful musical groups of the 60s. Gary’s unmistakable signature voice garnered six consecutive gold records and Top 10 Billboard hits with the following titles: “Young Girl,” “Woman Woman,” “Lady Willpower,” “Over You,” “This Girl is a Woman Now,” “Keep the Customer Satisfied,” “Don’t Give in to Him,” and “Home.” Puckett has performed on more than thirty network television shows and prime time specials during his career, even adding a command performance for the President and Prince Charles at the White House. The Union Gap disbanded in the seventies. In 1974, “Young Girl” was reissued in England where it received a silver record award for attaining a top five position on the pop charts, several years after its initial release. MARK LINDSAY Born in Oregon, raised in Idaho, Mark Lindsay began his career as the rockabilly singer in Freddy Chapman’s Idaho Playboys. He and bandmates Dick and “Mooney” White, along with Paul Revere Dick and Jerry Labrum, soon formed The Downbeats... which became Paul Revere and the Raiders after they got their first contract with Gardena Records in 1961. Seventeen Top 20 hits later, with Lindsay on all the lead vocals (including his own hit “Arizona”), it’s still hard for him to believe that a shy, skinny, geeky farm kid could have been so lucky. Lindsay still tours as a solo artist and, of course, continues to create new music.

GARY LEWIS AND THE PLAYBOYS Gary Lewis was about as close to being an “overnight success” in the recording field as anyone can get. And, just because it happens so seldom, it is always a special thrill when show business lightning strikes twice in the same family. The comedy antics of Jerry Lewis skyrocketed him to fame when he was just barely out of his teens. Number 1 son Gary had achieved comparable success in the music field... also at a young and carefree age. It was the summer of 1964 when Gary Lewis and The Playboys were discovered by producer Snuff Garret. Before long, with the producer/arranger team of Garrett and Leon Russell behind them, they took their first single, “This Diamond Ring” straight to number one. After their second hit titled “Count Me In” went to number two, Lewis and the band proved that they would be a continued success. They followed with more top 10 songs such as “Save Your Heart For Me,” “Everybody Loves A Clown,” “She’s Just My Style,” “Sure Gonna Miss Her,” and many more.

Based on a much-loved picture book, Grug is about a haystack named Grug that is fascinated by the world around him and solves everyday problems creatively and without fuss.
