RAPTUREHOOD STUDIOS Postgraduate Studies Diploma Thesis Supervisor

Spiros Papadopoulos

Personal Project Presented on March 15th 2017

Proposal for the conversion of “Evripides Hotel”

(79 Evripidou Str, Athens, Greece) into an experimental

space of research and applications for technologies of virtual and augmented reality. At “Rapturehood Studios” properly equipped work areas are available for research, while the use of hotel is preserved through rental rooms that offer guests the necessary tools for exploring and designing the new technology. An exhibition space, a small dining area / bar and an open air cinema are also included. Addable metal structures create spaces that “plug into” the existing building, generating new uses. Simultaneously, they create open and closed balconies (in the form of VR masks / headsets) that are the only “windows” of the building. The project includes a theoretical framework of 8.500 words.

The visuals of the project include elements of images from the following videogames: “Half-Life 2” (2004 – 2007), “Journey” (2012), “Bioshock infinite” (2013), “Monument Valley” (2014), “The Witness” (2016) as well as from the following movies: “Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back” (1980), “Blade runner” (1982), Romeo + Juliet (1996), “Eyes wide shut” (1999), “Tron: Legacy” (2010), “The Wind Rises” (2013) and Guardians of the Galaxy (2014). The images on pages 17 & 18 also include elements from Masashi Wakui’s night photos. Design of a student apartments building in Thessaloniki. Open and closed balconies on the elevation correspond to an equal number of apartments. The black color of the exterior makes a

contrast with the white interior spaces. Blinds on the ground floor are used for security reasons as well as an outward sign of the base / entrance of the building. The project is in progress and there may be alterations.

THE BRIDGE EVRIPIDOU STREET AS A MEGAFORM (TOWARDS RADICAL DISTORTIONS) Postgraduate Studies Workshop Supervisor

The Design of a building on Evripidou Street in Athens having length equal to the street, meaning approximately 700 meters. This megastructure includes from bottom up: shops on the ground level, offices, residences, one level of bazaars / showrooms for specialized products, one level of bars and restaurants and a large linear park at the terrace. The proposal is titled “The Bridge since it has a structure similar to a bridge: a long beam supported on piers. In addition, it functions as a bridge that connects

the Klafthmonos and Koumoundourou squares, the beginning and the end of the street. Elongated escalators at each square lead straight to the park on the last level. There is also a monorail that runs through the park. The existing urban fabric is replaced gradually in order to avoid the long-term blockade of the whole area. The process starts from the squares and concludes over Athinas Street. The interconnection of the two parts represents the end of the construction process and constitutes an event for the whole city.

Redesign of “Varvakios Agora” market’s square located in the historical center of Athens. The existing commercial function of the square is preserved and enhanced. A linear disrupted series of shops is added on Athinas Street complementing the continuous commercial frontage of the Street and also clarifying the area of the square. This intention strengthens from the canopy that creates arcades at three of its sides. At the same time, these shops create a filter for the view from and to the square. Considering as a reference the multiple actions for revealing the precious buried archeological findings of the historical center of Athens, a part of the square’s activities take place in a submerged space similar to an archeological excavation. At this level a small underground café / bar is operating. At the upper level of the square, fluid – like formations on the ground provoke users’ circulation among the arcades. A lane of grass / seating area, planted with tall trees, creates the impression that it emerged by dissolving the ground.

BREAKWATER

Undergraduate Studies Diploma Thesis Supervisor

George Papakostas

Student Team

Nora Ravanidou Stathis Stylidis

Presented on July 1st 2013

An infrastructure of Thessaloniki’s Port Authority is identified as a distinctive site and reason for the creation of new experiences. The breakwater is restructured into an accessible linear leisure route. The width of the two walking lanes is extended by addition of a supporting metal framework and urban furniture is installed. The big concrete blocks scattered over the breakwater remain at their place – apart from the points where they cause functional problems – and they are utilized for a series of “events”

for the visitors, motivating them to move all along. Based on this idea, four big scale “events” are proposed, that incorporate blocks’ clear design: a floating pavilion for various events, a restaurant, a thermal baths building and an isolation space / reading hall / library. A second floating breakwater is necessary to ensure the sustainability of these structures. Wave energy converters – integrated with moving sculptures – are installed on the new breakwater storing energy in batteries.

The floating pavilion for events was designed as a constant frame of the view and the events. Its ability to move, the transforming stage and the floor of mechanical installations, make it capable of hosting a variety of events while at the same time it renders itself a spectacle. The design principles of the following three buildings are common: clean-cut elevations featuring several openings that create dual aspect rooms, open plan floors having volumes “floating” in space and large openings in ceilings and floors that allow light to enter deep inside the structures. Entering the building of Thermal Baths visitors perform a “dive”, a gradual descent inside the building, from the terrace (where the entrance is) to the first floor (reception and changing rooms) until the lower level of the baths. The area of the Thermal bath was designed based on the all-around view to the sea as a visual continuity of the water element. In the building there are also rooms for a short residency and an open air bar at the terrace.

INCR / urban transport stop DESIGN II

Undergraduate Studies Workshop Supervisor

Aris Prodromidis

Personal project Duration

Summer semester 2011

Design of an urban bus stop in the city of Thessaloniki (new waterfront area). The structure of the egg is used to express the concept of the protective pocket. Pocket that contains / protects light or information. Groups of different sized pockets create two stable formations that support the whole structure. In contrast to these formations there is a dynamic ink-like form that freely spins in space, creating all the necessary surfaces for a bus stop: seats, information labels and canopy. 47

Series of pencil designs that were created from 2009 to 2012, either during the undergraduate workshops PAINTING 1 and FINGERSTORMING (Summer semester 2009 and 2011 respectively, Supervisors: Dimitrios Fragos, Fenia Pagoni) or independently, and were exposed in several student exhibitions.
