Shaira luna Although she’s of the most well-known photographers in the local industry today, Shaira’s feet stay firmly on the ground. Sticking to her aesthetic through a countless number of editorials for international publications like Boys by Girls, Cake Magazine, SelfControl Mag, as well as for local brands like Oxygen and Penshoppe, she lends us her flair for vintage influences as she zooms in on intricate embroidery and lace while capturing the true essence of a Light Wanderer (30).
Daan Zahradnik Searching for serene gazes in terrains and different planes away from his home in the Netherlands, photographer Daan Zahradnik keeps an eye out for underrated beauty. Traveling around and snapping scenes from NYC, Paris, and London to Rotterdam, Soest, and Ede, he expands his street sensibilities to urban cityscapes and fashion, working with brands Puma, H&M, and BALR, as well as illustrator and footwear designer Caroll Lynn (62).
Adam Amengual After picking up his first camera at age 12, Adam never looked back. Finishing his education in photography, he continued his passion by assisting photographers around New York. Now holding out on his own with work published in Variety, Time, and Esquire along with clients like adidas, Converse, and Bloomberg under his belt, he captures Lo Moon (52) within a total eclipse and frames the LA outfit in all their glory.
Joseph Sinclair Diving into a world of fame and celebrity, UK-born fashion photographer Joseph Sinclair cinches on his lens with a love of old Hollywood icons, American pop culture, and cinema. Capturing cinematic scenes featuring names like Olly Alexander, Nick Jonas, and Andrew Garfield, the selftaught artist celebrates his portraiture in subjects with endless stories to tell, such as presenter and social media Mastermind, Roman Kemp (58).

IS NOW FOLLOWING YOU W
hether you’re in search for adventure, inspiration, or fitspiration, there’s no doubt that social media has taken the place of so many things that we use to amuse ourselves with. May it be for connections or entertainment, our eyes are constantly fixated on our phones as we press the refresh button for that next hit of updates. But why are we so glued to our feeds? In our Social Media Issue, we go past the DMs and explore why these people have become a cultural obsession. DJ, producer, and YouTuber Dillon Francis is not just entertaining us on the decks, but also with his music videos, interviews, and parody vlogs. He has definitely injected humor and comedy into the ultracool world of music festivals, velvet ropes, and VIP parties. En route to Coachella, we chat him up and ask him about his creative process for his hilarious music videos. He also shares how and why he developed his YouTube personas, as well as the advantages of being an independent artist. Internet sensation known as That Poppy can be described as a blend of Barbie, kawaii, and child. Her videos only get two polarizing reactions–viewers are either creeped out and afraid or filled with wonder. Whichever group you fall into, Poppy has hit critical mass and is part of what shapes pop culture today. Although we’re not quite sure if it was the real Poppy or if she stayed in character as her online persona, she graciously answered our questions about her musical and art direction, her upcoming album, and her connection with her fans. Between her cryptic and ambiguous answers, we still got to know Poppy just ever so slightly better. Model Justin Kim hit insta-fame the moment his chiseled face appeared on America’s Next Top Model. Breaking out of the stereotypes that plague Asian characters on the small screen, it seems that Justin’s TV stint was destined for him as he wowed us with different sides to his personality. Between photo shoots and flights, he shares with us his obsession with sneakers, his journey from law school to becoming a model, and how sports have been his best playbook in life. It’s funny how we can know so much about a person from their pictures and videos they post, almost as if we’ve had full conversations with anyone we’ve never even met. Have we become a culture of creators or secret stalkers? Maybe we’re a little of both. However, as addicted we are to our apps, nothing is better than connecting IRL.

Charging their sophomore record with magnetic pulses of rhythmic bursts and raw emotion, folk punk duo GIRLPOOL releases their fullest potential with a more saturated in Powerplant. By Pola Beronilla Photographed by Molly Matalon and Kacie Tomita
F
irst igniting a spark in high school, Harmony Tividad (bass) and Cleo Tucker (guitar) were both plugged into a dream that they weren’t completely aware of. From spending several weekends indulging in their favorite bands at The Smell, the indie folk punks got a whiff of the scene and seized the scent of their fate. “We were totally obsessed with this band called Moses Campbell and were both playing in punk bands at the time. We really just hit it off from hanging out all the time,” recalls Harmony. Coming together as Girlpool, the duo made quite a noise with a muted debut in 2015. Marching to the beat of their drum, the two
48 - STATUSMAGONLINE.COM
opted to record their LP Before the World Was Big without any percussion but still managed to create an uproar. Riddled with powerful pop acoustic guitar riffs and unconventional harmonies, Girlpool served a subversive soundtrack that explored lyrical themes of existentialism, gender issues, and sexuality–the two were off to a perfect start. Singing in infallible unison, their musical partnership is one that feels natural. “We usually start with an idea that one of us has come up with, and then we kinda build off of it with each other. Sometimes, one of us writes a full song and we’ll just work on playing it together and figure out each other’s parts, but it’s mostly collective,” explains Harmony of their creative process. “However, for the next record, we did more songs we’ve written separately.” Apart from testing out new ways in their songwriting process, the two have also delved into filling out their sound with drums for their sophomore record Powerplant. “None of those choices were particularly deliberate or anything.

It’s just that when we get excited about doing something creatively, we’re encouraged about doing it,” says Cleo. “We just thought the songs would sound cool with more instrumentation, ones that we were writing for Powerplant. We just explored that and it’s kind of the only reason why we did–we just liked it and thought it sounded cool.” Their follow-up promises to take a leap to maturity in both the lyrical and musical sense. In their latest single entitled “It Gets More Blue,” things do seem to get more blue as they turn up the volume in penning melancholic anthems about matters of the heart. “I think this record reflects this inevitably different chapter of mine and Harmony’s lives compared to our previous album. These past two years in between Before The World Was Big and Powerplant, we’ve both moved and toured a lot, and it naturally captures a different space than our last record because we both evolved as people,” relays Cleo. “It’s kind of like when you come downstairs in the morning when you were a kid and your parents are like, ‘Oh my God, you look tall.’ You didn’t know that you were growing taller because you see yourself in the mirror everyday. And I think we both have experienced so much newness in those past few years. It’s been thrilling and scary and beautiful. I think that it’s just kind of how it goes.” Released under their new label ANTI- records, Girlpool is geared to show a different side of their music with Powerplant, boosting their
sonic blueprint with a starry-eyed power and a fuller sound. While the fear of a sophomore slump is lurking near, the two shrug off the pressure and let their music take the wheel–these punks got no time for folking around. “Honestly, that whole aspect of looking at it that way is so separated and different than the actual process of creating music and writing together. I think that the perception becomes completely irrelevant when you’re driven by creative desire,” shares Cleo. At the end of the day, Cleo and Harmony are two best friends you can easily rely on. “Writing songs that we feel close to and getting to play them anywhere is really fulfilling,” adds Harmony. “We make music because we love to and whatever people find in it is important and real.”

Like a chanteuse singing on the moon, Audrey Ann Boucher makes a French conection with Kyle Jukka’s primitive electronic gear to go in disguise as SHE-DEVILS and entertain this world with their otherworldly sounds. By Pola Beronilla Interview by Bianca Serrano Photographed by Sarah O’Driscoll
B
usting off the vintage sounds of ‘60s yé-yé and tossing it to outer space, She-Devils’ music has finally landed on earth. Although it took the Montreal art-pop duo a while before getting the right mix, Audrey Ann Boucher’s early exposure to ‘60s French pop music was a perfect match for Kyle Jukka’s spacey aspirations. “We eventually started making music, but nothing really clicked. Then one day, we just had this idea of doing loopbased music that’s kind of rooted in ‘60s music, and it just worked,” recalls Audrey. While stepping into the familiar territory of sampling sounds a bit hackneyed, the duo manages to explore an infinite loop of possibilities with their hypnotic hybrid. “I just let Audrey do whatever she wants with any of the stuff that I make. It’s always pretty obvious what sounds good,” shares Kyle. Audrey adds, “It’s
50 - STATUSMAGONLINE.COM
just whatever works with him first, then what works with me, and what he ends up adding to it. It’s very much what we both choose that ends up as a song, but we don’t really choose, ‘cause it kind of chooses for itself.” Focusing more on the effects that music has on you, your ears, and your mind, it has also been their mission to make their compositions feel as visual as possible. Inspired by the cinematic works of Gregg Araki, John Waters, and Quentin Tarantino as well as the artistic stylings of Yayoi Kusama and Andy Warhol, you can easily catch a glimpse of the pair’s collective visual language through their music videos for “Come” and “The World Laughs.” “It’s like what you would see when you listen to a song if you close your eyes. For us anyway, that’s how it comes. We’re not really trying to do a narrative with
anything. It’s really about trying to express a mood and style as much as possible,” explains Audrey of their thought process when creating videos. As the two continue to make art for the ears and eyes, She-Devils are now directing your attention towards their upcoming self-titled debut album. Set to be released via Secretly Canadian this May, playing with the devil never sounded this good. Can you tell us the story behind the name She-Devils? Audrey: We were looking for a name for a show we had to play. We decided on She-Devils ‘cause it’s like a girl gang name, which we we’re into even though Kyle’s not a girl [laughs]. We just liked the idea of having that kind of name. We were aware of it because of the movie She-Devils on Wheels, which is one of Quentin Tarantino’s favorite
MAESTRO
movies, and we just liked the way it sounded rebellious. What made you decide that mixing and sampling was how you wanted to interpret your music? Kyle: My whole way of making music is oriented around my samplers, so they’re like my main sound palette. I can take sounds from anywhere and sort of experiment with it. It’s always been the way I worked. It was already so natural for me to do that. It’s just the way I operate as a musician. We heard that you guys have great taste in films as well, and we can see it in your music videos. Does your music influence your visual aesthetics, or is it the other way around? A: I think it’s both. It’s weird because I wasn’t really able to make music or sing before I started
making drawings. It was when I started making drawings that I was able to understand what I was about. It helped me understand who I am. I think they’re very intertwined for me and for Kyle too. She-Devils are about to release a full-length debut album this May. Can you tell us what went into the making of it? A: When you make a first album, you’re kinda trying things out, so there’s a lot of experimenting going on. You sing about what feels most natural without necessarily putting that much thought into it–at least that’s how it was for me. I ended up singing a lot about my experiences, like a lot of it deals with love and relationships. I was very focused on that at the time, but it’s a lot about expressing those emotions in ways that make sense for me now while also reflecting things that
I’ve taken in from my influences and just trying to have fun with it. Ultimately, what do you want listeners to take from your songs? K: I just hope that there’s a full experience where you can listen deep into it and let it take you on a ride–a ride that’s fun to take. A: Also, that it’s fun to be playful. It’s fun to be real. Nothing has to be perfect all the time, and we’re all in this together.

TOTAL ECLIPSE Foregoing the unabashed sanguine personality of the digital age, LA outfit LO MOON feels like a sphinxed riddle within the musical troves of the Internet. By Bianca Serrano Photographed by Adam Amengual
T
hey say that first impressions last, and LA-based trio Lo Moon played it coy with only one song under their belt for months. “We developed the band out of this idea that we enjoyed hanging with each other and thought our musical voices could create something unique together. We all had something to say, and we kept going from there,” Matt recalls. Made up of singer Matt Lowell and multi-instrumentalists Crisanta Baker and Sam Stewart, the dream pop outfit ghosted the cyber space like an enigmatic entity, and you know how people–with their thrill-seeking instincts–are always

up for a good mystery. But in spite of all the perplexity tied to their name, they were always just a tightknit group that made no bones about their identity. “It comes down to an emotional feeling and it has so much to do with how we all react to the music. Through the process, it started becoming clear what kind of band we wanted to be and we just continued to trust and believe in that,” explains the vocalist. “And I think the more we play live, the more this will develop as well. Everyone’s voice and musical spirit together is what makes this band tick.” Their voice rang clear and bold in their seven-minute single, “Loveless”– an enrapturing track that tactfully chose to swim against the stream of
how-to rules on debut shorts. “It was a long process; it started with a beat and some chords in an NYC basement and ended with the band working on it with the producers in Seattle five years later. The feel and arrangement needed everyone’s voice to finally feel right,” says Matt of Lo Moon’s 2016 hit. With their true feelings written in dream-like wavelengths, the synths arc up to an ethereal peak and back down to the ground, highlighting Matt’s aching falsetto crooning about the inevitable passages of a relationship. “The ups and downs, the highs and lows, and the dark and light–it’s all in there. The insular conversations, the outward yearning, and trust in love and relationships,” Matt relays. “I wanted every section to have a tension and release moment, and tried to create that through the music as well as the way the song

evolves over the entire seven minutes. I wasn’t motivated by a single moment but more a feeling over time.” Apart from the buzz their single made across the airwaves, Lo Moon had also stepped out of the shadows with a cinematic debut as they premiered their music video for “Loveless” months after its release. “It wasn’t our vision but more of the wonderful director Warren Fu. I let him run with the idea because he connected to the song on such a strong level,” he relates. “We just knew it needed to have a certain amount of beauty. We feel so lucky to have worked with Warren on our first music video, and we’re so happy with how it turned out.” But while our first taste of their visual feast had us craving for more, Lo Moon still prefers to serve their sonic blueprint as their main dish. “There’s a vast array of images and scenes that the music evokes because we truly feel the emotional palette is whatever the listener wants or takes from it. I just hope our music isn’t limited visually or imagery-wise, but anything with a natural beauty I would hope works,” he adds.
Backhanded with painfully relatable words that slope to what’s raw and real, Lo Moon builds the framework of the song with an electronic collection of moments. “I think as a band, all we can do is put ourselves out there emotionally and hope that the listener has an experience and a connection to it on any level,” shares Matt. Scored with trip-hop drums and come-hither lines, it’s a rich composition that echoes post-rock sensibilities of Talk Talk’s Spirit of Eden and gives a crashing wave of melancholic narrative to our emotions, foreshadowing what we can expect next from Lo Moon. “I want the listener to have any sort of emotional connection to the music or the song; that’s our goal as songwriters and as a band,” he explains. “It’s to make sure something sticks with the listener after the last note is heard– that’s powerful stuff. That’s what I think is so special about songs, they last the test of time. They grow with you–and that’s incredible.”

Constantly fueled by Monster Energy drink, Liverpool duo HER’S opens a can of wistful emotion through an experimental sound of supersonic pop. By Kimberly Carpio Interview by Pola Beronilla Photographed by Ryan Jafarzadeh

omposed of Stephen Fitzpatrick and Audun Laading, Her’s is here to prove that they’re not your usual pop band. Spiraling peculiarity upon first meeting, sharing the same lovable characteristic sparked a partnership waiting to happen. “We both met in sleepy Liverpool, hanging out for about a year before deciding to the kick the jams over a couple of milk cartons. We made a secret video that night, which can be found on YouTube if you’re crafty enough,” the two recall. Their loyalty to their roots has been of great influence to their music, taking their hometown’s name wherever they go. “We treat Liverpool as a place for us to channel our small coastal town angst. It’s the cure for our sheltered upbringing, which we loved, by the way,” they quip. Describing their partnership as a “Monster-fueled melancholic dreamboat,” the duo is more free-spirited away from the reality of the music they create. Their music provides an electronic yet recognizable pop atmosphere when you listen to it, reminding us of early ‘60s rock & roll music. Defining sadness both musically and lyrically, their mutual love for timeless and melancholic pieces led them to this entrancing jangle pop sound. “A lot of the melodies come from the oldies, like The Beach Boys, Santo & Jonny, Joe Meek, and The Beatles,” they share. With an idiosyncratic sound causing waves not only to our ears but also to our soul, their multisided music and vibrant personalities will keep you hooked. If we were to spend a day with you guys in Liverpool, where would you take us? We’d take you guys down past the Baltic Triangle in the afternoon, to an old abandoned brewery, which now is home to multiple independent businesses, one of which

is our favorite vintage spot Red Brick Vintage. We’d then meander towards The Grapes for a pint, pit stopping on the way at Big Bowl for a cheap curry. Beers consumed, we’d conclude the day at Roscoe Street House, where our friends live, before stumbling home to the Georgian Quarter, where you’d all stay on our couches. Going into your upcoming release, what are the themes and topics that you tackled, both musically and lyrically? What should we expect from Songs of Her’s? Musically, we tried to create a spectrum of different sounds, where each song represents a different avenue that we’d like to explore, giving people a comprehensive introduction to the world of Her’s. Lyrically, there are songs about family, relations, and big moods all combined with tremendous angst, yet there’s a strong flow of bittersweet flavor throughout. You guys have a knack for wonderfully written hazy melodies. What do you want the listeners to take from your songs? An unrelated and sudden need to drink Monster Energy… Could you share to us how one song from the album came about? We got pretty funky late one night in our old flat. After a big dose Ariel Pink and ‘50s jams, we began to create a joke-style little tune, with a silly deep vocal style (mumbling along the first thing that came to mind), combined with this naive bass line–out of this came “Speed Racer.”
MAESTRO
On a side note, your album artworks look great! Thanks, that would be our very own Audun Matthias Knobelauch Friis Laading!
“[IN OUR LATEST RECORD], WE TRIED TO CREATE A SPECTRUM OF DIFFERENT SOUNDS, WHERE EACH SONG REPRESENTS A DIFFERENT AVENUE THAT WE’D LIKE TO EXPLORE, GIVING PEOPLE A COMPREHENSIVE INTRODUCTION TO THE WORLD OF HER’S.”
Is there a story behind its artistic direction? The Songs of Her’s artwork depicts someone on their own, in the comfort and intimacy of their bedroom, where the artwork from each previous single could be a scene from this person’s dreams. What’s the best part about of you guys do? We travel light, bond intensely, and get to split 50/50 on gig fees. And the greatest struggle? Our greatest struggle is planning our day around our vice, Monster Energy…

Being a model, presenter, YouTuber, and social media reporter for The X Factor may seem like a juggling act, but ROMAN KEMP is the host with the most flair for fun. By Janroe Cabiles Interviewed by Kimberly Carpio Photographed by Joseph Sinclair

hen it comes to wearing many hats, Roman Kemp can change up his game real quick–but he’s no court jester. Before the LA-born British host found his way to chatting with the biggest names in the music industry, whether on his morning segment in Capital FM or on The X Factor, he gave music itself a try and signed with Universal Music. “It was amazing. I was traveling and writing songs everyday with incredible artists,” he recalls. “It gave me real insight to the industry that I’m still working within and gave me a view from the other side of interviewing. But as with most things I do, I just got that itch to try something new, so I moved on.” The next frontier for Roman was on the flashier side, starting out a modeling career. “That part of my life made me comfortable in front of the camera and completely eliminated any shyness to perform in certain situations,” he shares. “Especially considering my first job required me to be completely naked, covered in body glitter.” Shooting campaigns for the likes of Topman and Drop Dead, the time to shape-shift arrived again, leading him on the trail to presenting with his YouTube channel Pitch Invasion TV dedicated to football. Catching the attention of adidas, he was chosen to present Gamedayplus, which allowed him to travel through Europe to interview World Cup champions. Opening up the doors to hosting gigs outside the sphere of sports, he went on to work with Nickelodeon, ITV, MTV, and Red Bull TV before finding his voice in both his presenting at Capital and The X Factor, but with his own YouTube channel as well. With his usual backdrop of talking to the likes of Ariana Grande, Calvin Harris, Ed Sheeran, and Justin Bieber taking a backseat, he takes us

behind the scenes–in his own home. Doing funny skits, pranks, and impeccable impressions or just making fun of himself, he shows us exactly why he belongs to the world of entertainment. “I guess the main thing I’ve wanted to show about myself is my work ethic; I’m constantly wanting to challenge myself and keep busy,” he shares of his own goals. Fresh off the plane coming from Coachella, Roman takes a moment off his jet-lagged return and speaks of his experience from his side of the mic.
MASTERMIND
How did presenting start out for you? It all started when I was watching football content being posted online and I thought, “I could do better than that!” That sounds arrogant, but I believe we all have that voice inside that tells us we can do better. So I filmed my own content and made myself the host. It all escalated very quick from there. The thing I love most about my job is that I get to work with amazing crews and it’s like one big team on each project. I genuinely love creating content–no matter what the job is, I’ll always be chipping in with my own ideas. Probably the most annoying thing for any director [laughs]. You also get the chance to interview both upcoming artists and the biggest names in the industry. How do you prepare for interviews? I guess I don’t do too much ‘cause I want to learn about that person within the chat itself and it creates a better interview filled with anecdotes. It’s funny because I don’t know if there’s anything specific that I think is hard about it. In life, some people are easier to talk to than others, but you just adapt the conversation around that. I love it. I just get to chat with people that inspire me.
You do quite a lot of pranks, both on TV and on your channel, but what’s the best prank that’s been done to you? The Little Mix girls stormed out of an interview with me once as a prank, saying that I had offended them. I felt sick. Always great when things like that go to national press as well. The craziest thing you’ve done lately is letting Ed Sheeran tattoo your leg. Aside from him, which artist would you allow to tattoo you again? No one. Never, ever, ever, ever again. I’m not that stupid…unless Rita Ora wants to. With your line of work, do you equip social media in any different way? I guess not, because I try to show humility and not post too many “Watch my stuff here” type of tweets. I’d say that from my tweets or posts, you can kind of gauge the type of person I am in real life. To be honest, memes are my life.

In high school, all I ever did was draw,” she recalls. “I never went to parties or anything typically cool–I think I only ditched school a couple of times to go to a free art museum.” Beaming into college, she transferred from jazz piano to English, all the while still drawing in her free time. “I just didn’t believe I was skilled enough to be an artist or technical enough to be a designer.” Going on tour as the organist of her band Crocodiles for the next five years, she decided to give art a try and landed her works on Juxtapoz, LA Weekly, Amadeus Magazine, and Nylon, and also collaborated with Thrasher, Crap Eyewear, Ray-Ban, ASOS, and Planned Parenthood. Equipping her laser beam of neon and pastel, bold lines, and dashes of stars and comets, she mixes her love for the ‘80s and anything from light years away. “I grew up in a very sci-fi and fantasy-friendly home, and I have always been in love with books and movies that were set in space. The ‘80s was such an amazing time for scifi and fantasy–so many epic stories. Plus, you can never have too much spandex and big hair.” With those influences in her mind’s four eyes, she walks us through her creative process. “It’s pretty straightforward. I also love space and all things extraterrestrial. I love combining the two and creating this window into the normal day-to-day lives of alien babes and their hopes, fears, daydreams, and adventures.” Envisioning them slouching or swimming around, taking selfies, or whatever girls do when no one’s watching, she paints a playful picture of what goes on behind closed doors. “I’m definitely interested in imagining what other women think and feel, and I like to daydream about the possibility of alien babes going through the same moments of solitude, excitement, stress, etc. that I sometimes go through,” she says. “I
always loved Star Trek for that reason–aliens weren’t all painted the same, and even when they didn’t look humanoid at all, they still had complex emotions and reactions.” Exploring the space between the perception of perfection, Robin finds quintessential allure through the cosmos, finding beauty in weirdness and vice versa. “I think sometimes if you gloss over all of the ‘imperfect,’ it becomes indistinguishable and uninteresting. I like finding the weird details that make things and people individual and strange. On her website-slash-personal-blog CAREAUX, she went into detail about how her life turned around when her father got into an accident. “Honestly, I hope it’ll never happen to me again or to anyone else because it wasn’t an ideal situation,” she continued. But she found her refuge in illustrating. “It helped me calm

Eventually, it brought me somewhere.” Aside from getting her into illustrating, Caroll’s personal experiences are what inspired her to start writing her “Story Time is Up” series on CAREAUX. “I want to inspire everyone around me through life. Although I walk my path differently and I’m in a different space, it doesn’t make me a better person or make my life more special,” she said. Despite her success, she still keeps her feet on the ground. “I’m still a normal person. I still have dreams and aspirations as anyone else. Now a global ambassador of Puma and a footwear designer for adidas and Nike, it’s safe to say Caroll can walk the walk. “Designing footwear was a major switch for me. I never knew anything about making footwear. I knew how to wear footwear–that, I was good at [laughs]. Lucky enough, after a solid year, I was able to learn a lot more. I still have issues nowadays on how to make the best shoe but we have a lot of good people around us to help if we need it,” she said. By pouring her heart out on her creative ventures and various projects, Caroll hopes to effect positivity through her platform. “My goal is to inspire other girls to do what they love in life. I’m not going to tell them what to do. I want them to do what they want to do,” she shared. Whether what they want to do is to study or to travel, she says that they should just do it. “There are no rules in what you want in your life. No one is allowed to tell them what to do. And I want them to know that.”
“There are no rules in what you want in your life. No one is allowed to tell [other girls] what to do. And I want them to know that.” How did your love for sneakers start out? The first pair that I fell in love with were Air Max One Sports Blue Womens. That’s where it actually really started for me. I find it funny how I had this sneaker panel and everyone on the panel basically said the same. Air Max One is a big deal. How would you describe your personal style? And what do you look for in sneakers? Feminine meets street. I don’t dress like a tomboy because I feel that’s not really me. I like skirts and dresses. I love fur coats and
I like pink. So I combine that with sneakers. I look for comfort in sneakers. Aside from your website, you also have a strong presence on Instagram. How do you translate your brand to social media? I like to keep my Instagram personal. I really don’t like seeing the advertising of bloggers, so that’s also the reason why I don’t follow any bloggers as I feel it isn’t all real. I like to follow people who actually show what they really do. I like to follow people who are lowkey but work at Nike, Puma and adidas. I love that. I see people unfollowing me every day and I don’t know what people want to see but I post what I want. What’s the ultimate message behind CAREAUX? Man, I never thought about that either. Pretty interesting if you ask me, but still, I don’t even have an answer to it. Maybe I’ll find out soon.

One of the most talked-about purveyors of moombahton, Dillon admits that he began his music career by experimenting on weird electro-house and really bad dubstep–none of which he thinks really worked well for him, even though he was gaining a fanbase with his constant posts of remixes and original works on Soundcloud. Eventually, he found out about moombahton and realized that it was the breakout genre for him. “I gained a really wide following from it because it was such a new genre at that time,” confesses Dillon. Diplo, who signed Dillon under his label Mad Decent back in 2012, was one of the first people to carry and push moombahton and in festivals that were happening around then. Fast-forward to now, Dillon’s last album Money Sucks, Friends Rule is a huge representation of what he listened to growing up: a
mixture of pop, indie rock, hip-hop, and turntablism, plus the music that he’s into as of the moment. Entering the void now as an independent artist, having parted ways with Columbia Records, he’s equipped with his online presence he’s known for. His antics on Snapchat, YouTube, and Instagram boast of hilarious parodies, weird characters (like his pet piñata named Gerald), and his fictional multiple personalities. When asked about the reason why he began doing it, he was honest enough to say that it was to poke fun at some vloggers that he would see online. “The whole point of vlogging is very weird to me. People are actually interested in seeing random people do things like it’s just something they do throughout the day. It just speaks to how some people love to be voyeuristic,” says Dillon. He produced several series and introduced different characters played by him on his YouTube channel, like Preston, a erratic emo adult, DJ World, which starred fictitious DJ characters and One Deeper Talks, a short talk show hosted by DJ Hanzel, one of Dillon’s online characters. While Dillon is on a high with a million YouTube views on his first release as an independent artist, which is a collab with G-Eazy called “Say Less,” he links us to his view from up top and reels in on his domain of music and online clownery.

What’s your thought process like when coming up with your videos for your YouTube channel? It’s just me, my manager, and this guy in the production named Dylan. We just come up with ideas, have fun, and shoot the vlogs. We do two a day. We talk about some random things like that piercing the nose one with Preston; some person dared me to pierce my nose in the comment section and we just stacked out three of the dares to complete that vlog. Pretty much everything started to become organic. We call kids out for dares and whatever else we’re doing in the vlogs. How do you come up with your YouTube alter egos and who among them is your favorite? I think DJ Hanzel would be my favorite because I think he’s the most loved among my fanbase. And that character has the

most views with me and the rest kind of lived on their own. They just all came out from experiences that I’ve had with random people and stuff that I’ve seen online that I want to make fun of. Spinning back to your music, what do you think would be the biggest advantage and disadvantage now that you’re an independent artist? I can finally do whatever I want now. If I wanted to, I can release a song tomorrow. I don’t have to get it cleared by anybody from a label; I can do it on my own. Being an independent artist gives me way more freedom in everything that I get to do. There’s no person that we should run it by to make sure that it’s okay with the label. The disadvantage is that I have to pay for everything, but other than that, I don’t really see any disadvantage at all. We get to hire our own team. We get

to create our own label and do it our own way. If it works, it’s our fault, as well as if doesn’t. We’re not relying on anyone else. I think that pressure is way better for artists. You’ve done collabs with other musicians. What excites you most whenever you work on a project with someone? I like working on projects with different people just because it’s a lot easier when you’re collaborating. You get to push two ideas together rather than coming up with an idea completely by yourself. Whoever I’m working with, I like that you get to balance the ideas off each other and you get to nix what you don’t like. It’s easier not to second-guess yourself because you have another person to help you through the whole way, and vice versa. It’s also easier to get to the finished product fast.
Who do you want to collaborate with and what kind of music would you guys make? I really want to collaborate with Daddy Yankee, that’s my main goal right now. I think it would sound like moombahton because it’s right up his alley in terms of his reggaeton. It’s a perfect combination. What are you most excited about this year? I’m working on my album right now, so hopefully I’d get that Daddy Yankee thing going and just finishing a bunch of new music. That’s what I’ve been doing during the start of this year, so I’m really excited to get a lot of it done.

Tumbling down the digital rabbit hole with only the next suggested video to hold on to, the dark side of YouTube is a pretty odd place to get lost in. And just when you thought you’ve reached the end of the tunnel, a doe-eyed manic pixel dream girl comes to light, charming you with existential questions over a celestial soundtrack. inside the box of the Internet, the curious case of Poppy is one that shouldn’t be solved–but that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be talked about. A seemingly minimalistic variation of J-pop star Kyary Pamyu Pamyu, this cyberspace oddity is like a titular character straight out of an unreleased collaboration between Tim Burton and Wes Anderson. Recorded through the lens of visual artist Titanic Sinclair, Poppy’s series of unfortunate sketches has been causing a virtual insanity–she even goes as far as leaving cryptic messages

of the word “help” in her tags and video descriptions. All dolled up in multicolored pastels and princesslike outfits, she first stepped into the hallowed halls of YouTube with an 83-second-long video of her eating cotton candy in 2014. Constantly rendering fresh content ranging from a video of her introducing herself for 666 times to a 49-minute session of reading the bible, it was only two years after that her viewcount started stacking up, where fellow YouTubers including PewDiePie, The Film Theorists, and The Needle Drop started taking notice as well. Whether or not she’s an actual member of the Illuminati, leading an Internet cult, using a marketing gimmick, or expressing a genuine act of artistry, the real world is in dire need of someone figmental like Poppy. Beyond the glitch and glamour of it all, concealed underneath that automated facade is a natural-born
pop star. Citing Marilyn Manson, Madonna, and God as her biggest musical influences, Poppy opened a new tab in her digital identity with a refreshing debut entitled Bubblebath in 2016. Although the four-track EP serves a saccharine slice of bubblegum vocals stacked on a sugary electronic production, her candy-coated pop cuts are far from sweet nothings. Complementing her overwhelming visual sense of cuteness and peculiarity, Poppy’s sonic aesthetic–possibly crafted with the help of her frequent collaborator Titanic Sinclair–fuses well-written melodies with outright absurdities that subtly take a sinister look at popular culture and this fame-crazed society. Taking an even odder turn this 2017, her latest single aptly titled “I’m Poppy” spells out what kind of artist she truly is, giving the viewers a peek at her life as an cyberspace princess singing “Computer, Internet, Video, Camera” in a robotic manner near the song’s chorus. Encoding a colorful rush of cosmic noises and 8-bit style synthesizers that remind you of dialup modem screeches, Poppy makes a successful connection to a worldwide audience. Welcome to the new world, she’s your Internet girl.

HEAVY HITTER Hi, Poppy! What were you doing before this interview? I was exploring some neighborhoods in Tokyo. Can you describe yourself to us using the letters of your name? Prophetic. Obsessive. Pretty. Pink. Yellow. You’re quite an Internet princess. What’s the world like through Poppy’s eyes? The world is very cute and the future is a great place to exist in. You’ve been making some buzz with your music as well. What led you towards exploring your musical side? I was bored with American pop music, and I wanted to create something with more dimension, something that is more exciting. Most of your songs seem to focus on intertwining dark elements into easygoing pop songs. What inspires your songwriting? God, Monster Energy Drink, and the color Pink. They all help me. What kind of message do you want to leave for people who listen to your songs? Be aware, be mindful, be with Poppy– always. Last year, you released your debut EP Bubblebath, and it’s safe to say that the world is itching for some new songs from you. When do you plan to release a full-length album? And could you give us a gist of how it would sound like? They know when the album is coming out, but they haven’t told me yet. It will be completed on my last day in Tokyo. It sounds the way I look at this current moment.

What do you hope to achieve with your music? I want everything. Final answer. We see that you’ve been working a lot with Titanic Sinclair with your videos on YouTube. Has working with him helped shape you as an artist? He has brought a lot of inspiration into my world–I feel he would say something similar about me. We are not in a cult, like many people have speculated. Titanic Sinclair is not a cult leader. He says things that many people do not understand, but I understand him. You’ve also been interacting with Charlotte a lot lately. Can you explain to us your relationship with her? Charlotte is in and out of my life. I still care about her, I just feel this is a very vital time in her life where she really needs support from me and the fans so she can get better. Please #pray4charlotte if you have a moment during this trying time. Music culture, and culture in general, has definitely changed, thanks to the power of the Internet. As an artist living in the digital age, what’s the best thing about it? My connection + the ability to interact with the fans is the best part about the Internet. And the worst? The worst thing about it is when I don’t have an Internet connection and I am unable to interact with my fans. Speaking of your dedicated fan base, what would you like to say to your followers? To the fans, I have you! Lastly, what do you think makes you more than just another pop artist? I am Poppy. There is only one Poppy and she loves you more than any other pop artist.

AS FAR AS THE MINORITY REPORT GOES, JUSTIN KIM STRAYS FROM THE USUAL ROUTE OF GLITTERING K-POP GLAZED TABLEAUX AND SACCHARINE FASHION, FROM STRUTTING THE SMALL-TOWN STREETS OF VIRGINIA AS THE BOY-NEXT-DOOR TO THE RUNWAY AS AMERICA’S NEXT TOP MODEL. by BIANCA SERRANO
Photographed by Filthy McDave Styled by Jourdan Kadow
amalgamation of Asian and Western influences, Justin Kim stands in symmetry as a renegade and breaker of stereotypes to men’s masculinity. Riding onto the coast of the rag trade on a white horse, he forgoes the shining armor to something more unabashedly sexy with his effortlessly smooth swagger, defined features, and razor-sharp jawline. With him leading the way, we see that beyond the horizon, the future is definitely Asian pervasion. “Representing the AsianAmerican community was definitely a significant role I wanted to take on. I instantly knew I had some extra responsibility to represent us in the right way, but my way. There have always been tons of stereotypes and misconceptions about us as a demographic–not confident, not perceived as sexy, docile or submissive,” explains Justin, model,
musician, social media influencer, and finalist of America’s Next Top Model. “There was one instance where one of my cast mates told all of us in the house that she had never met an Asian person in her life,” the model remembers. “Hopefully, I did a little something to change that. All in all, it was an amazing experience,” Because of the diversity of his upbringing, as a child, he grew up to be a concoction of many things–a dreamer from the get-go, he donned the faces of a sports anchor, astronaut, secret agent, and veterinarian. Also confessing to be a self-diagnosed sneaker head, he spent hours drawing sketches of shoes. “I used to obsess over shoes and the different silhouettes and aesthetics that I would see on foot or on the shelves at the mall. I’ve tried my absolute hardest to cut back on my sneaker-head addiction, but I swear there’s always a pair that I gotta
have.” We’d like to think that all this foreshadowed the forthcoming of his modeling career. Admittedly being a camerashy person, his destiny played a puckish gag as he discovered his new-found purpose through a pinch hitter fashion shoot with a friend, which then jump-started his path to modeling as his cards led him away from his original plan as a law graduate to a fated detour to ANTM. And now being at the forefront of erotic labels, Justin proves just how wrong your first impressions are as we dissect his amatory exploits frame by frame. With a cutting-edge structure and a humble pout, he wordlessly tells us to eat your old-age words up. “I’m most proud of how I’m a living example of the fact that you can choose to do anything you want to do. Pursue whatever career it is that you want, regardless if it’s against what you’ve been brought up on,” Justin
relays. “My parents never thought anything serious would come out of it. At first, they didn’t like it but then saw the extra money I was making on the side while going to school, so they were with it at the time.” In a dichotomy of sugar and spice, Kim knows just the right pinch to give his line of work a good kick with his bad-boy image and sweet disposition, setting the bar high with a picturesque representation of the modern gentleman, making him pictureperfect inside and out. “My parents set the foundation for us, and [my sister] Paula kind of stacked the bricks to put a roof over us, helping them out financially, buying them a house, and so forth. I probably wouldn’t have the freedom to do what I’m doing right now if it wasn’t for her. I’ve been told I’m pretty humble, and I thank those that have raised me for that. I owe her and my parents everything and more,” the model earnestly shares.
All humility aside, Justin definitely has as a lot to brag about with a frame reminiscent of the renaissance masterpiece, David. When asked about his secret, he simply answers, “Everything in moderation. know so many people that get caught up in strict regimens and diets to eventually affect their social life or to burn out and hit rock bottom. If you want to have a pizza today, have it. If you want a glass (or bottle) of wine, cheers! Put in the work at the gym but also remember to live life. Work hard, play hard.” To add to the growing list of guiding stars that helped shape who he is, his first love for sports such as football and basketball also had something to do with his steel focus and easy-going trip. “It’s beautiful how a sport can teach you so much about life. The lessons I’ve learned through sports is something that will forever be embedded within,” he recalls. Soaring up high just at the ripe age of 25, he doesn’t seem anywhere near going down low as he continues to kick ass, modeling for various brands and being featured in magazines like Vulkan and Nude, and now aiming his sights on the big screen as an aspiring actor and YouTuber. With a sun-kissed tan and a golden heart, Justin spills the beans on his not so clandestine outlook on his success: “Just be yourself. Don’t get lost in the sauce or caught up trying to keep up. Modeling is beautiful in that people see beauty in different lights, which leaves room for change and anomalies.”
