he TV industry has been flipped upside down the past few years and it’s been exciting to see what storylines the networks have come up with. Although the reality shows have become embedded in our television consumption, our thirst for creative storytelling has been quenched with the scripted shows we are obsessed with. Whether it’s a fantasy about kings and dragons or a sci-fi story with a nostalgic charm, our TV Issue rounds up the faces in the series that have left us spellbound.

Actor Finn Wolfhard is probably a household face by now with over a million followers on Instagram and a critically acclaimed show under his belt. The 14-yearold who plays Mike Wheeler took the world by storm playing the lead in the Netflix runaway hit Stranger Things. You would think that his life has become all glitz and glam, but Finn swears that aside from having more followers on social, it’s pretty much the same.

During our photo shoot with him in New York, he tells us what it’s like to be recognized on the streets, which directors continue to inspire him, as well as what he’s got planned out for the music side of his career.

Twelve-year-old Noah Schnapp is no stranger to us.

If you don’t know him yet, he also co-stars in Stranger Things alongside Finn Wolfhard. Although his character was underground for most of the first season, he stole the hearts of the viewers straightaway, playing the gang’s missing friend Will Byers. Already being signed up for a second season, Noah shares with us how his character will evolve, the craziest fan theory he’s read online, and what he does to live a normal life.

If Shannon Purser may look familiar, it’s because you’ve probably seen her acting stints playing Barb Holland in Stranger Things or Ethel Muggs in The CW hit Riverdale. Even though she’s played minor roles, she still nabbed the attention of the viewers and even garnered a fan-based social media campaign to give justice for her character Barb. Yes, she’s given her minor roles major impact and she’s ready to give us more. Now busy with a new series and a couple of movies in the works, Shannon dishes on her transition from television to movie roles, her dream collaborations, and what the changes for equality she wants to see in the industry.

Changing his ways of keeping his creative process simple and under blankets, DJ and record producer RYAN HEMSWORTH is coming out of his shell and reveling in the magic of interpersonal collaborations.

D

espite having a great childhood in Halifax, Canada, DJ Ryan Hemsworth was determined to leave the city to pursue a serious music career, prompting his move to Toronto. “But regardless, I have a great family and they’ve always been supportive,” says the soft-spoken 27-year old record producer. Ryan took up journalism for four years and was prepared to use that as his backup plan in case his musical pursuit didn’t take off, but it did.

Growing up with two older brothers, his background in music was varied, ranging from Green Day’s Dookie and Radiohead’s OK Computer to Wu-Tang Clan and Mobb Deep. “In the city that I lived in, you grow up and start an indie band; there wasn’t a specific thriving scene for rap,” he shares. It was also in this stage that he realized that he’s more comfortable working alone than running his ideas by other people. “I just like working independently. I think that’s always been pretty natural to me,” he explains.

Ryan’s sound is a combination of electronic, hiphop, and rap and he recalls leaning towards that way because the people he would email to collaborate with were mostly rappers. “In 2010 or maybe earlier, I was emailing this rap group from San Francisco and

MAESTRO they hit me back and they were like, ‘Yeah, let’s do it. Send us stuff!’ That was my first attempt of collaborating because I didn’t really know anybody that was literally close enough to me to work with this kind of music, so I was just used to emailing people,” he explains. A fresh new offering is bound to follow his 2014 studio album Alone For the First Time, with Ryan diligently working on the last touches. “I tried to do all the sessions in person and actually form a bond with the people I work with. It’s been really fun to learn a lot more about the process of producing and about making music in general.”

You mentioned that you mostly work online for your collaborations. What do you like most about this arrangement?

The fun part of collaborating online is not knowing what they’ll send back because you can talk with the artist and figure out ideas, and sometimes they’ll give ideas for melodies. But for the most part, when it’s remote it’s going to be a surprise.

Although in the past couple of years that I’ve been working with people in person, I’ve realized that there’s more spontaneity. You’re there and there’s a certain chemistry.

How do you choose songs to remake or remix?

It’s always going to be a song that I really, really like. It has to be unexpected because other people either just wouldn’t do it because they’re afraid that people are going to be like, “What the fuck?

Why did you do this?” or they just might not like it because it’s different, but for me, that’s the whole point. That’s the risk of just trying something a bit different with music. Some of what I’ve done did really well for me and I still run into people commending me on my remixes, and how it changed their life. That’s weird to hear, but still amazing.

Your song ‘One For Me’ with Tinashe was sampled from Frou Frou’s ‘Breathe In.’ How do you choose songs to sample on tracks?

Sampling is still my favorite part of making music, and I think it’s just that feeling of working with an existing piece of music and always having that reference when you put it in a song. That’s fun rather than working completely with all new sounds. I never want to rely too much on an obvious sample, so I always want it to be in the background.

Considering how influential music can be, what kind of feeling would you want your music to relate to your fans?

I’m a fan of music, so when I’m traveling, that’s my favorite time to listen to songs. I’m just on my headphones. I’m hoping that people can experience my music that way. I think about the normal parts of people’s days when they’re on their way to work or they just want to listen to music for 20 minutes before they have to work for hours and hate their lives. That’s the motivation for sure—just to waste people’s time in an enjoyable way.

How do you keep your music fresh for your listeners?

I try to find new and exciting artists that I can work with, and at the same time, find different old music that just sounds exciting to me in different ways.

cting as her own harmonic triad, Harloe runs an empowering one-woman show as the writer, singer, and producer of her music, living up to her namesake as a maestro in her own right and as a concoction of contrasting influences from the city that never sleeps. “Being in NYC, there was always something cool going on, whether it was a dope show or amazing people to collaborate with. It’s really a place of ambitious and talented people, so it always kept me inspired.” Despite Queens being a breeding ground for culturally diverse talents, her shift in becoming a full-fledged recording artist comes with a bold decision to leave the familiarity of her home for a brighter flip-side,

and Los Angeles’ forecast reads a gleaming future ahead for the artist. “It definitely felt like a big transition because the two cities have such different vibes.

There seems to be more of a formula to writing in LA—especially with pop, while NYC feels a bit more raw and gritty. In terms of lifestyle, I definitely get more vitamin D and chill time in LA just because of the weather! But I love both and feel lucky to be able to call them both home.”

Standing tall with a strong backbone on classical piano, the musician packs the winning punch as the writer of a myriad of top artists such as Charli XCX, Britney Spears, and Jojo, adding a tough bite to her musical chamber.

“Writing for other artists really opened my eyes and ears up to new sounds and worlds of music that I hadn’t explored before. It brought a whole new sense and perspective of music to me, and I found more of myself through it.” Now with reputable street cred to her musicale and a unique palette of urban, pop, and alternative R&B, Harloe’s sensibilities balances between the barriers of concert halls and underground rock-fests.

“It definitely sets the tone for what the rest of my music on this project will sound like overall.

Each song has a different feel and leans toward other sounds, but ‘All In My Feelings’ is definitely the glue of it all,” the musician explains. “I think the main thing that was tricky was figuring out how to keep it as simple as possible in production, while keeping it upbeat and moving. I tried lots of different approaches on it. I wanted it to have a sense of both those worlds, so the challenge was not over doing it, and keeping it as toned down as possible,” she adds. Noticing a lack of feminine touch under the drawing board, Harloe decided that she needed to take matters into her own hands, proving to be

her own girl boss as she brings her music to fruition. “The most exciting and challenging part was actually doing the programming on the track because it’s new territory for me. I did most of the song recording sitting on the floor in my closet, while singing into a USB mic directly into my laptop.”

Thawing it out completely required another woman in the scene, and a collaboration with Chicago femme fatale Dreezy and her granular prowess certainly added that extra crunch to the song. “I knew that having her do a verse would give the song much more feel, and when I found out she wanted to be a part of it, I was so excited.

She sounds amazing,” she relays.

With her vocal compass reaching powerful heights, the New Yorker decided that keeping it simple was the best way to embrace her vulnerability and orchestrate her confrontation of letting go, starting it on a light note with hard-hitting lyrics that explore

the passage of her relationship, and ending it with an aching pulse written in soul and funk-influenced syncopation. “The song kind of came together after an honest realization of feeling really low after a breakup. I just wanted get the thoughts out of my head late one night after leaving a party I was at, and started producing on my laptop that night or morning, whichever way you look at it.”

With a guttural voice, her single “All In My Feelings” is an overture to a continous narrative, with her second single “More Than Ever” reaching for a euphonious closure to her relationship. “After a few years of writing in LA for other artists, I got so inspired to tell my story. What really set it off was writing my first single.

It was the first time I felt like I wanted to say the words in that song myself.”

Sensitive and soulful, singer-songwriter STEFFAN ARGUS is wasting no time chasing after his dreams on a boat to neverland with only his guitar, pen, and a head full of stories to tell.

n Illinois native, charming boy-next-door Steffan Argus was born with music beating up his chest. At an early age, he was trained to sing and play a multitude of instruments resulting into the versatile storyteller we know of today. However, despite his many talents, Steffan decided not to dive head-first into music, saying that the best advice he was given was to wait. And contrary to the fast-paced demeanor of the industry, this advice brought wonders to the growth of his sound. “I’ve been working on developing my music for years and years. If I had released the

type of music I wanted to make three years ago, I would be on a completely different trajectory than I am now. I allowed myself the time to figure out who I am and what I want to say. It’s been a blessing in disguise. I was so anxious to release music, but because I waited for the right moment, I’m now doing exactly what I have always wanted.” Now 18 and more than ready to make his voice known, Steffan finally released his debut EP Lost At Sea last May. Citing Jason Mraz, Kishi Bashi, Yellow Ostrich, and Twenty One Pilots as his musical influences, the acoustic crooner takes his own version of whimsical yet poignant to create a sound dripping of both adventure and nostalgia, an amalgamation that reflected off his four-song EP. A voyager’s

journey to the great unknown, Lost At Sea is refreshingly unique and interesting as all of the songs are tied together to an encompassing narrative.

“This collection of songs tells a chronological and cohesive story from start to finish. This body of music is the first chapter in my book. It’s a fantasy adventure that delves deep into some darker emotions that are often left untouched. It’s a call-to-arms for all the people who feel lost and are looking for an escape,” he explains. “The sound is very whimsical and even orchestral, with elements of alternative rock, but rooted in a pop style production.”

He is a true storyteller at heart, drawing his songs from fictitious worlds interlaced with genuine emotion from his own person. “I

“I allowed myself the time to figure out who I am and what I want to say.” like to write songs that exist within a made up universe. I take real feelings and situations from my life and apply them to abstract concepts that come from being inspired by all things nature and fantasy. The songs on the EP have been inspired by everything—from a T-shirt to a shed that I lived in for a year and a half. I get little seeds of ideas attached to emotion, and then I expand and turn them into songs,” he states, allowing for the kind of writing process that grants us a peek at his personal life while still keeping his listeners at bay and clamoring for the rest of the chapters to come. Always the overachiever, Steffan isn’t only a musician, but a model, an athlete, and an actor as well, getting a head start at both singing and acting at a young age through musical theater, an endeavor that

paid off on both fronts in the long run. “Musical theater taught me technique and discipline. I’m so grateful for that. Acting in theater is a lot different from TV or film, but it did help me learn a lot about becoming a character. It also taught me stage performance endurance. When you’re singing and dancing on a stage for two hours, you learn a thing or two about breath control.”

Steffan currently stars in The Commute, a web series on YouTube already on its second season, as Hansen, one of the only two leads of the romantic comedy. With a total of over 7.5 million views, the success of the show has helped catapult him into other acting projects, including the newest X-Men spinoff The Gifted. Dropping this October 2017, Steffan is set to play Jack, the boyfriend of Lauren Strucker, one of the

child mutants on the show. Jack is kept in the dark about his girlfriend’s true identity, causing trouble in their relationship.

There’s definitely nothing stopping a free spirit like Steffan, with an arsenal of talents and pure passion at his fingertips he’s a visionary in the making. “I’ve been very interested in exploring the possibility of creating a musical of my own,” he reveals. “It is in very early stages of development but it is something I’m very excited about. Back to my roots!”

Boasting multiple projects and a lot more to come, he’s a spark ready to catch fire, also promising a full-length album in the future.

He’s hitting the road with his band as he gears to connect with his fellow lost boys and girls around the country, and hopefully around the world in no time.

Tangled with the symphony of rap music, rising artist TOWKIO tightens his grips as he hikes his way into reaching the top.

ith well-known artists sweeping the music industry like tidal waves, starting musicians might find it hard to swim to the island of their dreams, although not for Towkio, as we might see him sailing the oceans of the industry from East to West with his diversity in producing music. Passion and love for his works are what keep Towkio going, but the hip-hop-obsessed rapper admitted that he grew up hearing soul and R&B tunes due to paternal influence. As he was getting older, he eventually got hooked into the direction he’s going right now. “My dad used to play a lot of Stevie Wonder, but I think the first hip-hop- album I listened to in full was Kanye West’s The College Dropout. Then I got obsessed. I was downloading every album and mixtape that I could find from anyone that was hot. I used to walk around with my CD player, selling mixtapes I just burned to disk,” recalls Towkio.

Being a part of the Chicago hip-hop collective Savemoney, which artists such as Chance the Rapper and Vic

Mensa also belong to, he was able to expand his interest with music while doing collaborations with some of its members. More than just a group of people sharing the same passion, Savemoney became his refuge.

With his one-of-a-kind talent, it’s never impossible for Towkio to attract multiple talented artists to work and collaborate with. The rapper strived by himself for his music to be publicized—reaching out to producers and exchanging ideas with people close to his heart. “I was sending emails to all my favorite producers like Lido and Kaytranada, and luckily, they got back to me. I also was just working with one of my best friends Peter Cottontale and he really helped me put final touches on my music,” the rapper shares.

What do you love most about performing?

I love performing because that’s your moment to spread your frequency—you have the floor, and you get to take people on your own personal trip. When I perform in the studio, I imagine being in front of everyone so it’s basically the same, but feeling people’s energy live is unmatched.

Aside from music, what else do you like doing? Are there any hidden talents that you have?

I like to make art of any form— videos, clothes, cooking, sculpturing. I’m definitely going to dive more into other art once I’ve mastered music.

What are you looking forward the most for this year in terms of your music career?

People finally understanding me and my vision. I am just a vehicle, I saw God, now it is my duty to spread the light.

Savemoney are my brothers more so than anything. Business and music aside, that’s how it always will be.

We’re always together and going to stay that way. The collaborations are second nature, they just happen.

There are only few Asian-Americans in the rap industry. How do you see the culture growing in the future?

I’m not really sure. I’ve never really considered myself as just an Asian rapper because I am also Mexican, so I could also be called a Latino rapper, but really, I’m just a kid from Chicago who makes art and that’s what I’m going to continue to `do.

xploring the vivacity of her imaginations as a child, Britt Baron already knew what she was going to be even when she was growing up. For her, it all started with the influence of whichever character she saw and eventually imitated them through pretending as a kid. Encouraged by her parents through and through with whatever she wanted to become, Britt was still told to cherish her youth first and pursue acting later on. “I asked my mom if I could start auditioning professionally when I was in elementary school, but she said she wanted me to learn how to ride a bike–be a normal kid first–and if I still wanted to be an actor as an adult, she would support me,” she recalls.

Taking advantage of her school’s curriculum, she jumped into a theater program offered and used this as a training ground for her eventual entrance to University of Michigan. “I went to the University of Michigan and earned my BFA in Performance. My agent is an alumnus of Michigan and was in the audience the night I performed an improv clown sketch. After the show, she started sending me out on self-taped auditions and eventually signed me when I moved to Los Angeles, and it’s all history from there,” Britt exclaims. Going through the motions of transitioning from theater to TV, she felt a wave of culture shock with the change. “With theater, you usually rehearse for a month before you perform, you are given an opportunity to play and explore in the rehearsal space. In television, there is little to no rehearsal time, and you often shoot scenes completely out of order; so as an actor, you really have to track where you are in the timeline of the story.”

Behind the glamour, Britt faced the “no pain, no gain” concept head on. Through acting, she got to embrace different characters with the roles she played–just like the punk rock gal she embodies in Netflix hit series GLOW as Justine “Scab” Biagi.

Unveiling a completely new vibe that she saves for when the camera is rolling, she sees the differences between herself and her character. “I’d like to think that I am much friendlier and more goofy than Justine is, especially with the other GLOW girls,” she shares.

The contrast between the two doesn’t stop there; Justine is sulky and sullen, filling in the resident teen post-up with her devotion to movies and a thing for the pizza delivery guy. Though she starts the series on the sidelines, her storyline pushes her to the center of the ring as a well-rounded contender.

Despite the polar opposite characteristics, Britt does confess to a connection to Justine in style.

“We both wear black Converse–I even have a photo of my costume pair of Converse and my real pair next to each other, and they are almost identically torn up.

I am at times definitely stubborn,” Britt describes in detail. “But I will admit I went through a phase in high school where I painted my nails black and listened to Avril Lavigne while lamenting about how nobody understood me,” she adds.

Aside from the impact she is leaving in the industry, Britt uses her fame as a platform for a good cause by being an advocate for American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) especially after losing her cousin Kelly to suicide. “Mental health and depression are treated as something to be ashamed of, and it really, really shouldn’t be,” she says. “We need to reach out to one another, we need to talk about mental health. There is still so much that is misunderstood or not heard at all about mental health.” Along with the amount of success pouring over Britt, projects and stints still await the budding actress as the spotlight continues to glow for her.

reating ripples in Hollywood with her sanguine humor and superb performance in the acting scene, Ally Maki among others is living proof that Asian-Americans in the industry are more than doing martial arts or reading books page by page. The Jack-of-all-trades star got involved in acting at a fairly young age and started appearing on 2002 as Sasha in My Wife and Kids. With the budding passion she established and the warmth she received from people she got to work with, Ally found her safe haven in front of the rolling film. “There was just something about performing that made me feel at home,” the actress recalls.

However, before soaring in acting, the actress admits that she was timid as a young girl. Being the wallflower that she was, doing voiceovers and venturing into musical theater became her gateway into acting as an outlet, and she bade goodbye to her introverted past self.

With the boundaries established in the world of acting before, entering the scene as a fourth generation Japanese-American was a struggle, due to endless stereotypes and racial discrimination.

“It wasn’t until I moved to LA that all these stereotypes and limitations became apparent to me. Casting directors or agents would say, ‘Do an accent for this,’ ‘Can you wear glasses?,’ or my worst fear, ‘Just do some of that martial arts stuff.’ It was never anything outside of that.”

As she continues to grow in the industry, Ally foresees the Asian-American culture growing and exceeding the limitations of what Asian-Americans in Hollywood are used to portraying. “This industry raised me and I’m so grateful for that. I ask all of those people [involved in the industry] to do what they can to move the needle forward.

MASTERMIND Another role of yours that’s really interesting is in Dear White People. What’s your take on the controversial satire of the story?

Being on that show has garnered me some of the most messages and outreach. Justin Simien has created this world really dissecting these micro-aggressions that actually occur on college campuses. I think it’s truly brilliant, hilarious, and heartbreaking. Adding the Asian perspective on top of that is the icing on the cake. In my eyes, [my character] Ikumi is trying to find her identity by being a part of the crew. She finds strength in them. I think the Asian-American community struggles with finding our voice and those things that define us culturally. With the crew, she feels like she can stand up and be heard for the things she faces.

What’s next for you?

I’m stepping into the world of writing, which is all new for me. I’m developing a project based upon my family’s history that is so close to my heart. Also, I’ll be able to share in the near future but I just signed on to a pretty epic new project. Definitely bucket list-worthy.

tired of that,” Ally reinforces. “I took a meeting recently with an executive at a production company who said they now value diversity at the highest level. He said, ‘Look at a piece of blank paper, it’s boring. Now, paint different color strokes and patterns all over the page. Now that’s art.’

Let’s talk about your part in Wrecked. How did you get the role? How was the auditioning process in terms of comedic chemistry between the ensemble cast?

When I first read the script, I was completely sold. I wanted to be a part of the project immediately. I almost didn’t go to the audition because it was so engrained in my head that ethnic women can’t be leads. After years and years of people telling me that Asians are the sidekicks or the best friend with no story arcs, I really felt like my own self-worth and confidence as an actress had been shaken. I felt like an accessory.

Playing a best friend on screen had bled into my real life of feeling like a secondary character.

I am forever grateful to TBS for taking a chance on me and a fully-realized Asian-American female character.

Cooking up a Hollywood storm, JUAN RIEDINGER has been landing roles left and right–but now, he’s only adding more fuel to the fire as he continues to build an acting repertoire of eclectic proportions.

orn and raised in the quaint town of Banff, Canadian actor and director Juan Riedinger didn’t always have his heart set on an acting career. While trudging through double degrees in Biology and English on his third year of college, Juan had taken on a Drama course as a cursory elective. But what he had hoped would be an easy class filler for a year soon turned into a lifelong pursuit. A summer after his elective, he made a home of his car and hit the road less traveled all the way to the City of Angels to audition for any role that he could. “During that period, I somehow tricked myself into believing I could make a living as an actor, and I haven’t looked

back since,” he fondly recalls.

The Hollywood dream is no light endeavor, and while fortune favors the bold, only pure talent could have sent Juan into the trajectory he’s been riding through for the past year or two, gracing projects with his rugged looks and undeniable acting chops one after the other, both on the big screen and small screen–a platform divide he refuses to differentiate. “My job is simply to find truth in the scene, to breathe life into the text, and to be malleable if I need to be. That doesn’t change whether I’m doing a TV show or a movie. Television has also become such a cinematic medium in recent years, so the line has definitely blurred between

A notable recent role that’s put his name on the map was his stint on American crime drama Narcos, based on the life of drug kingpin Pablo Escobar. Juan called the opportunity to play Colombian drug lord Carlos Lehder a dream job while reminiscing on his time on set located in places all over Colombia and Panama, unbeknownst to the worldwide success the show would eventually gain. “They had me fly a small airplane for one scene for what seemed like an eternity but was probably thirty seconds. And no, I don’t have a pilot’s license. So that was probably the biggest rush of my life.”

A flurry of projects came pouring in soon after. Eager to diversify his portfolio of characters, Juan landed himself starring roles on It Stains the Sands Red and Drawing Home. The

former has Juan walking dead in a zombie apocalypse as Smalls, a bloodthirsty zombie who undergoes a not-so-usual coming-of-age experience when his pursuit of a woman turns into an unlikely relationship in the middle of the Las Vegas desert. “One of the biggest challenges was tapping into his human and sympathetic side without the use of words,” he says, adding to the long hours of make-up application needed for the role. Meanwhile in the latter film, Drawing Home, Juan does a 180 and dawns the trope of the romantic artist, dramatizing the real-life love story of Canadian landscape painters Peter and Catharine Whyte. Drawing Home marks Juan’s first biopic; he cites the added pressure of playing a famous individual but is also grateful for the perks attached to it acting-wise. “I was lucky to have access to a wealth of research materials, including journal entries, photographs, and even voice recordings, which were crucial in helping me get a sense of who Peter was on the inside and out.”

Although a veteran of the business, the actor points out that he likes to keep things fresh and exciting–if the wild differences of his film roles isn’t enough indication. “As far as acting goes, the less recognizable I am (physically and/ or behaviorally) from one role to the next, the better.” Juan says, stressing the importance of variety and seeing to it that he constantly broadens the range of the genres he takes on to avoid the curse of being type-casted into one role. When it comes to directing, Juan enforces the same search for diversity but reveals that despite this, he tackles the two professions in completely different manners. “I approach directing from a much more cerebral place than I do acting,” he explains. “There are so many moving parts when you’re directing, and you have to keep the big picture in mind at all times. As an actor, it’s a much more subjective experience, so I rely on my instincts and my gut more than my brain.”

Jumping from acting to directing to being a family man, Juan’s got his hands full and he’s showing no signs of stopping anytime soon. He currently has a recurring role on the second season of the seductive TNT drama Good Behavior as Teo, stirring things up for the rest of the show, and adding to the limitless bevy of characters he’s portrayed.

A list that will only continue to grow as Juan continues to carve out his name on and off screen for all the world to see.

It’s not that hard to be smitten with Finn Wolfhard.

Just like the characters that he portrays, he’s a charming young boy who views the world with eyes of wonder and excitement. At 14 years old, he’s already been in two huge thriller franchises that most kids his age wouldn’t even dare to watch.

He first hit our frequencies last year starring in Stranger Things as the determined leader of the pack, Mike Wheeler. The series might’ve catapulted his career, but his love for the craft has been keeping him grounded. “The only thing that’s different now is that I get stopped on the street for pictures and have a lot followers on social media, but that never changed my personality or anything. I’m just happy to be an actor in general,” he adds. Making his way from Hawkins, Indiana to Derry, Maine, he’s also set to star in the upcoming movie adaptation of Stephen King’s horror classic It as the buck-toothed goon Richie “Trashmouth” Tozier.

While both involve a plot where children mysteriously go missing, we’ve found ourselves a star in Finn Wolfhard. He’s definitely got the “It” factor, and there’s nothing strange about that.

Despite being a middle-schooler, Finn is wasting no time kidding around. Although it seems like he’s shaping up to be sci-fi’s It-boy, he’s been gradually showing different sides of himself. When he’s not busy slaying strange creatures and dancing clowns, Finn can be seen shredding his bass and guitar, and he’s got an impeccable taste to match the skill he’s been refining. His covers of Mac DeMarco and Nirvana have been circulating across the Internet, in addition to the buzz he’s been creating with his band Calpurnia–and it doesn’t stop there.

He recently hosted and performed at Sweet Relief’s benefit concert called Strange ‘80s alongside Sarah Silverman, “Weird Al” Yankovic, Tenacious D, and Slipknot’s Corey Taylor. And now, he’s stepping behind the camera with his latest project, co-directing a crowdfunded music video for Spendtime Palace’s Western rock tune “Sonara” with former Viner Josh Ovalle. With It premiering this September and the second season of Stranger Things streaming this October on top of his personal ventures, Finn might’ve seemingly bitten off more than he can chew, but never underestimate a small kid with a big appetite.

You recently dabbled into the world of filmmaking, co-directing a Westernthemed music video for Spendtime Palace with Josh Ovalle. Can you tell us some of the directors that inspire your vision as a director?

I think my favorite directors would be Spike Jonze and Edgar Wright.

I like Spike Jonze because he’s so versatile in a way that he can make skateboarding videos but also win an Oscar for Best Screenplay. That really gives me faith that I can be an actor and still be a director. And Edgar Wright’s incredible because he just knows how to create something visually. He has perfect vision. Oh, also Sofia Coppola! That’s another director that I admire a lot.

We’ve also been seeing a lot of your band Calpurnia online. Can we expect any music release from you guys soon?

Yeah, it all depends on my schedule, but I think we’ll be doing an EP that’ll be out in the next couple of months. Hopefully next year, we’ll do some shows. We want to do as many shows as we can ‘cause we love performing so much. We want to do shows in Vancouver and a tour maybe next summer.

Going into your upcoming projects, you’ve been into a lot of scifi and supernatural stuff so far.

Was this a conscious choice or a mere coincidence?

It’s a weird coincidence for sure.

‘Cause when I auditioned for Stranger Things, I was auditioning for everything. That was just the right thing for me to do at that time. Same thing with It, and I’m glad that they were. It’s just complete coincidence.

Acting is my favorite thing to do, so whatever comes to me, I’d do it as long as the script is good.

Both Stranger Things and It are set in the glorious decade of the ‘80s.

How were you able to play a character from a time period you have no memory of?

The cool thing about playing a character in general is you have to add yourself to it, so I try to put as much of myself into every character that I play as possible.

I don’t want to misquote Matt and Ross [Duffer], but they told me, “If you want to be a director, you have to write your own stuff.” And I really like that ‘cause you have full control of everything. that really has to do with the ‘80s is that it’s set in a different time.

If you know enough about it, it’s easy enough to do.

You got the chance to work with Sean Astin for this season. How was it like working with him?

He’s so amazing. He was open to anything. I asked him every question I had about The Goonies and The Lord of the Rings. He just gave me so much knowledge and told me to enjoy being a kid but at the same time, be comfortable with what you’re doing as well as the projects that I’m in.

How different would this season of Stranger Things be from the first one?

The second season is just like the first season, but better. It has the same sense of wonder and adventure, but adding more horror and drama aspects to it. I even think it’s funnier than the first. It’s taking everything that the first season did and just improving it.

Being a kid yourself, do you have any tips for other kids who want to follow the same path that you thread on?

I think anyone my age who’s into acting should go to open casting call websites like Craigslist and just find whatever they can find. If you want to do acting classes, that’s fine, but acting classes never worked for me. I’ve learned to access my emotions way more as I went along.

But it depends. If you want to study it, that’s a different thing. I only advise that you go to school for it if you don’t know anything about acting. But if you already know enough about it, then I think that you should just do your own thing.

Moving forward into your career, what kind of projects are you interested in doing next?

NOT A LOT OF 12-YEAR-OLDS spend their day like how actor Noah Schnapp would normally spend his. His life is now a mix of his definition of normal and crazy. Starting his day with breakfast and a photo shoot perfectly contrasts his summer trip to Camp Echo Lake, wherein he got to spend time with his friends for seven weeks before starting a good amount of promo, advertisement, and photo shoot requirements.

Everything suddenly turned out to be a bit of a whirlwind for Noah when Netflix’s original sci-fi hit Stranger Things aired, where he plays Will Byers, the kid who was lost and eventually found; although when he was saved from the Upside Down, something wasn’t quite right.

Noah caught the acting bug when he saw Annie on Broadway. “I remember watching the show and I really loved it. When I saw the main character on Broadway acting on stage, I really felt like

I wanted to be on that stage. I wanted to be in front of the audience and not be one of the audience,” Noah recalls. At 7 years old, he took acting classes mainly for fun; however, as he progressed, he grew to love what he was doing and realized that he could actually make a career out of it. “My teacher recommended that I try getting into the acting industry—that’s when I started auditioning for several roles,” shares Noah. Two years ago, he landed the role as the voice of Charlie Brown in The Peanuts Movie, which he thought was an enjoyable thing to do. “I think it’s awesome when you’re voicing a cartoon character because you get to work one-on-one in a small booth with a director. He’s right there in front of you the whole time, guiding you while you’re saying your lines, which you can do as many times as you want until you get it right. You can be crazy and take a lot of roles,” he says.

Next came what threw Noah in together with a bunch of kids to become some of the brightest pop culture stars of the moment. He reminisces how he met some of the casts of Stranger Things two and a half years ago. “I met them one after the other in different places. I met Caleb [McLaughlin] in LA for the first time, and I met all the other kids on set one by one.

Everyone flew in on different days. We all didn’t know each other and we just knew that we were making this small show for one season. And we would shoot like forever; we were together, seeing each other every single day, and we just formed a close bond.” He continues, “We have a group chat, we do sleepovers, and talk to each other all the time.”

In between shooting the show, Noah has done a lot of TV guestings and award show appearances with his Stranger Things co-stars and was also featured in Panic! at the Disco’s music video for their song “LA Devotee.” It’s all happening for Noah, but the kid is eager to remain an ordinary kid though living in his newly found strange and crazy life.

What is it about acting that you like the most?

My favorite part about acting is I can be someone totally different and transform into another character. I get to try out this whole new world and time, and I find that really cool. I’m a normal kid but I can play someone who has a disability, who’s being abused, or who’s from another era.

How do still keep normalcy in your life despite the fact that Stranger Things is such a huge hit?

It’s been crazy because when the show came out, I was in summer camp. We don’t have technology when we’re in camp so when I came out of camp, I realized that it turned out to be a big show, that I have all these followers on Instagram, and that I have people coming up to me on the streets.

It’s really just my parents who are keeping me grounded and I still go to a normal school, keep a normal life, and just try to be as normal of a kid as possible.

What’s the best part of being in Stranger Things?

My favorite part about being in the show is that I get to be around a bunch of kids, and that we can play and just have fun while we shoot.

How will your character evolve in the second season without telling us too much?

In the second season, Will definitely has a larger role and he’ll be part of every character’s storyline. They will show how the aftermath of Will coming out from the Upside Down affected him. He will have a lot of emotionally-challenging scenes.

Is there anything that you and Will have in common?

Will is very close to his brother and they do a lot of things together, and I have a twin sister named

Chloe and we’re very close to each other too. I can relate whenever his brother would help him when things don’t go well.

What’s the craziest fan theory about Stranger Things that you’ve seen online?

I think there’s this video that I saw on YouTube that someone said Hopper and Joyce would get together. I love it when people make couple theories like who would marry who or who would get together, I just find it very funny.

Do you have a favorite character in the show other than Will?

My favorite character would be Eleven because she’s a freak and she doesn’t care. She has superpowers; she’s like the hero of the show. She’s cool.

With the success of everything that you’ve been doing career-wise, what major changes did it bring to your life?

I started the show two and a half years ago and didn’t know a lot. And just growing up in the show together with such amazing people like Winona Ryder, David Harbour, and the Duffer brothers, I get to learn new tips and tricks at a very young age.

What are you excited about this year?

Definitely for the second season of the show to come out. We’ve been filming so much and it’s been crazy; everyone worked so hard on the second season and it looks so great. I’m just waiting for it to come out and see how everyone would react to it.

Disappearing into a pool of fandom obscurity is what put SHANNON PURSER on the map, and what with upcoming film Wish Upon and her stint as Ethel Muggs on Riverdale, we’ve been left wanting more.

A

lthough taking a dip in her best friend’s boyfriend’s pool might not have turned out that great for her, Shannon Purser made the most out of her short-lived character Barbara Holland on Stranger Things.

Now recognized as the patron saint of true friends taken for granted, viewers were given a last-minute reprieve from the pending doom of the horror scifi with Barb, in all her ruffled tops, high-waisted jeans, and wisdom lying beneath her oversized spectacles. But this teenage dream, which also ignited the hashtag #JusticeForBarb, all started and ended with Shannon. “I had loved performing ever since I was a little kid, doing plays at school and church. I’ve always been in love with stories and I think the idea that I could become a character in a story just completely enchanted me,” the actress recalls.

“I did community theater for several years until I was discovered around age 15.” The transition to signing with an agency clearly paid off, as her first role came in the form of a little show called Stranger Things. “I remember that after I had sent in a couple of taped auditions, I came in to read for the directors. It was my first time at a studio and I was incredibly nervous.”

She continues, “I got into the room, met the Duffer Brothers, and had to do that

scene in the Upside Down where I’m running from the monster. So I’m in this tiny little room screaming at the top of my lungs in front of these two strangers. It was pretty nerve-racking and bizarre, but it turned out well.”

The heroes of the show are usually the frontliners, but barely three episodes of the show put Barb in the spotlight. Aside from an unironic sense of style that transcends the ‘80s, the brief but thorough relatability we saw in her was enough to make her a fan favorite. “I think Barb represents everyone who has ever felt awkward, misunderstood, lonely, and left out.

I know I certainly felt that way at school sometimes. It’s been really encouraging and meaningful to hear that so many other people connected with her and wanted better for her.” Third episode’s the charm is a recurring theme for her roles as she steps into the dark town of Riverdale as Ethel Muggs, shaking things up in The CW hit with an empowering storyline that illustrates who really runs the show. “As much as I love acting, I love people even more and I get upset when I see injustice being done. Ethel’s story of being harassed and slut-shamed is all too common, unfortunately. It was really empowering for me to be able to shed light on a real problem and see some justice be served.”

Switching gears from small to silver screen, the transition came smoothly for her. “I’m not entirely

sure what I was expecting, but the transition from TV to film was actually fairly easy for me, which I’m thankful for. Sometimes, the schedule can be more intense for film, depending on the size of the part, but I’d like to think I’ve been handling it well.”

Stepping up the horror game from her past experience, she’s set to star in Wish Upon alongside Joey King, Ki Hong Lee, and Sydney Park. “Wish Upon was probably one of the best first experiences I could’ve had. The cast and crew were incredible and I had an amazing time.” On to more mysterious things, her next project involves working with legend Melissa McCarthy and her husband Ben Falcone in upcoming comedy Life of the Party.

HEAVY HITTER

“The film is a comedy about a recently single mom who decides to back to college with her daughter,” she shares of the plot. “I play a character named Connie and I have a great scene with Melissa. Shooting with Ben and Melissa was one of the most fun experiences of my career so far.”

With a growing roster of projects that make waves in the scene, there’s a lot of room to explore for the 20-year-old, but there are a couple of milestones she’d like to reach with particular influences. “There are so many people in this industry that I’d like to work with. Wes Anderson, Sian Heder, Christopher Nolan, Guillermo Del Toro, and so many others. In terms of actors, I really admire people like Viola Davis, Brie Larson, Jake Gyllenhaal, and James McAvoy.”

But aside from future collaborations, another goal she has on the horizon is more representation in both both TV and film. “The industry is slowly improving but the lack of female representation is pretty disturbing when you consider that we make up roughly half of the population. I’ve seen some incredible work from female actors, directors, and writers, and I really want to see more. I would love to see more complex, deep, and strong

female characters,” she shares. Being deeply enthralled on the topic of the LGBTQ community as openly identifying as bisexual, she continues, “I also think that minority representation is unacceptably low. I would love to see more ethnically diverse, POC, and LBGTQ characters and shorelines.”

With an upcoming series entitled Rise on NBC written by Friday Night Lights and Parenthood creator Jason Katims and starring How I Met Your Mother’s Josh Radnor and Moana’s Auli’i Cravalho, she brings to life a story of a small town theater putting together a controversial performances that changes their lives, starting this fall. Weighing the balances of both film and TV, Shannon’s talent has been measured, and we’ve been found wanting more.

I don’t really like the smell of this perfume, but the packaging caught my eye so I bought it.

I have a love-hate relationship with this book because it’s quite slow and predictable.

However, I fell in love with Nicole’s character because we are pretty much alike.

If I could give this book more than five stars, I utterly would! If you know me personally, I love reading and collecting psychological thriller books and this one is top-notch.

I literally screamed when I first saw this top from a thrift store because not only is it Margiela, but it’s also a kimono-blazer hybrid. It pretty much sums up my androgynous look.
