Emerging micro-scapes in the city’s fabric _Case study: Nikiforou Foka 19 Diploma Project | Teamwork with Ioanna Tzampazi
Relying on the belief that the Greek, as well as the worldwide crisis is a result of a deeper social crisis, we tried to think of simple ways of re-connecting citizens, in order to enhance the notion of neighborhood and consequently, the bonds between the city and its people. Our research mainly relies on the theory of “Urban Acupuncture”,thus we decided to actualize our project within the area of the city center of Thessaloniki, where we compiled a list of 24 urban voids as possible design areas. The actual design is delivered in one of them, located in the street of Nikiforou Foka, an area characterized by a unique historic past, since at the end of the estate numerous findings belonging to the byzantine racetrack have been discovered. Furthermore, until roughly 1919 the area used to be a road, once named Vasileos Irakliou. Today, the estate belongs to the municipality, is restricted and non-accessible. The two basic design-axes have been the needs of the inhabitants, which were researched through questionnaires, and the reinstatement of the old passage. Thus, by lining the concepts of public and familiar space with the form of an arcade and the archetype form of the house, we created a shell that sketches the movement and culminates in a bridge that runs across and features the ancient findings. In parallel with the abovementioned shell, a different system based in the shape of grid is developing, in a static way and in height, which hosts multiple activities: relaxation/pause, playground, study/workshop, screening, bazaar and exhibition. The two systems are different not only with regards to their form and use, but also in materialization: movement > wood, action and pause > metal. However, in a sense they form a unity, since they are in a state of continuous dialog, by interrupting or penetrating into each other.

Landscape architecture _redesigning the waterfront of Kalamaria, Thessaloniki Teamwork
Concerning the element of water as a strong identical mark of the area, the intervention takes place not only on the earth, but also on the water, which penetrates the earth and backwards. So, the new area is experienced through two kinds of route, one primary and “collective [(wooden deck)] and one secondary and serene [(pavers)]. From the beginning until the end of this routes, the passengers come across many micro-sites, which always offer a different water related experience (a fishing area,a relaxing area, an aquatic museum, an urban square, playground with water educational elements, an artificial wetland, a merely artificial beach, parks and groves)]. Through the process of the design was taken the decision to concentrate to one part of the entire design, which was the last part of the area, where the wetland and the beach are located. The wetland is consisted of the basic and other smaller routes, where local aquatic life takes place. The beach is at the first part artificial, since it’s located in the water, made by different levels of the wooden deck. Although, as it continues and reaches the earth, the route acts as the surface that adapts the beach elements. In the beach area, cutted boles are used to make the ground easier to be walked and also to form other elements like stools and lighting bases. Furthermore, the boles are getting higher as further they are located, making an optical illusion that ends to the densely planted grove. As regards the choice of the plants, it was made through architectural notions and needs [(form, shadow, height, seasons, etc].)

Urban Design _Reimagine the area of “Dialogi, Thessaloniki, Greece Teamwork
Main goal of the project is to activate the area, to attract young people and enrich the quality of life of the current residents, not only through architectural design but also through eco-friendly handlings. An important spot was the place where the public square is designed, because it used to be an industrial area, where some cylindrical structures were located. These cylindrical structures are transformed to high greenhouses, in order to gain a new and more interesting use, but also to preserve imortant elements of the area, the notion of memory. Concerning the kinds of space and roads designed, there are four different types, according to the location and the character ([central links, residential links, waterfront, etc].). The orientation of the buildings helps to take advantage of the greek sun, and an underground water system reduce the waste of the water.
*activities included: primary school, kindergarten, health center, sports area, a public square which includes a cinema, a public auditorium and a nature park.

“Metabasis” | Inhabiting the in-between _The new Bologna’s Bus Station Teamwork
Concerning the identical and symbolic meaning of the Montagnola Park in Bologna, and also the existence of the ancient wall, the concept is based on the triptych “memory/main use/public space”. Furthermore, the circulation is designed in a specific way, in order to give to the visitors the whole experience of the infrastructure and the landscape. Practically, the infrastructure is composed of a “memorial” path made by a brunch-morph, semi-transparent construction which converses with the ancient wall and create a new entrance to the Montagnola Park. The main building holds all the functions mentioned below, under a non-transparent construction, except from the entrance areas, where there are some holes, letting the sunlight inside. Open spaces are also designed, alocating the necessary open spaces. For every kind of space the height is highly concerned, in order to contribute the best spatial perception.
*functions included: bus station, tickets service, exhibitional space, restaurant/cafe, recreative space, library, w/c, parking, luggage room, storage.

The consitution of transition _The new Slussen’s pedestrian bridge Personal work
This design’s purpose is to cover the void between two urban spaces by creating an in-between space, where local nature could force the fear for the void or the unknown to disappear. The passenger experiences differently this part of the city, as long as it acts as a natural element. Apart from the functions being held, a pattern on the wooden deck is designed, working not only as an aesthetical element but also like a wayfinding instructor, since it’s located near important areas of the bridge. Approaching these spots, grass and linear light installation are gradually shown between the wooden planks. Also, in order to empower the Swedish nature, there is the ”meeting point” design, where structural elements gain aesthetical role, by being covered by local materials [(soil, grass, stone) and wooden planks, so passengers are able to interact entirely with traditional Swedish materials not only through the sense of vision, but also through smell and touch. Furthermore, a two-level building is designed at the southern part. At the ground floor there is an aquarium with local fish and sea species and the changing room for the exterior sea-watered pool (summer) / ice-skating area (winter), while at the upper floor takes place a “Swedish Water” Museum, in which is exhibited everything about Swedish aquatic life. Finally, an urban square is created at the southern part, in order to gradually enter the pasenger to the city, by changing materiality and by receiving urban uses, like transportation spots.
*functions included: dock, shopping area, dining area, fishing, ”meeting point”, local materials exhibition, Water Museum, aquarium, swimming pool [summer], ice-skating [winter], public auditorium, urban square.

Hotel in Nea Krini, Thessaloniki Teamwork
This project’s purpose is to design an urban hotel in Kalamaria, an area at the edge of Thessaloniki’s city center and next to the coast of Thermaikos gulf. The exact area is located on a slope, which is the initial axis of the design. In order to engage the design with the landscape, we decided to use geometrical and strict lines and forms, which imitate the image of the slope. The hotel includes several spaces apart from twenty (20) double rooms and the reception, such as offices, exhibitional space, bar/restaurant, underground parking, indoor pool and spa. The materials that are used outdoors are the concrete and the wooden deck, while indoors are used concrete, wood, bricks and corian.

Suburbian residence for a couple Teamwork
The subject of the project is the design of a 100m2 residence for a young couple. The form of the residence consists of two volumes, which seem to penetrate each other. Since the project is located at the edge of a cliff, the main uses, such as living room and bedroom, take advantage of the great view. The included indoor spaces are: a living room, a bedroom for the couple, a kitchen, a dining room and a w/c. Furthermore, the included outdoor spaces are: a parking lot, a barbeque area and a garden.

Teamwork
The project is the result of a complex procedure, where nature elements should be transformed to objects through digital mediations. Particularely, the form of a flower defines the basis of the design. Although, this basis is not the shape itself, but the inner notion of the foliage growing of the specific flower. Thus, the notions of “phyllotaxis” and “Fibbonacci” sequence come up. The resulting design is a wooden public lounge furniture (2,5m height/5m length), which can be merely transformed by its users. The pattern creates holes where either frame soft couches, or shapes seats, giving the user the freedom to define himself/herself the way he/she is going to use it.

Product design _keyword: eye sun-protection Personal work
The goal of the project is to create a product, which instant protects the eyes from the sunlight. Thus, concerning the notions of functionality, size, transformation and convenience, came up the design of a different kind of sunglasses, made by glass, metal and rubber. Because of its small dimensions (350mm*4mm when it’s closed / 650mm*2mm when it’s open) and its soft materials, the product is easy to use.

Product design _keyword: communicate Personal work
The goal of the project is to create a product, which satisfies the need of long-distance communication. Relying on the belief that modern communication means more than a simple phone-call, came up the idea of designing a communication product that combines phone and laptop/tablet capabilities with mini size. As a result, a mini, ergonomic and transformative device (pos.1: 100mm*60mm/pos.2: 100mm*90mm/pos.3: 100mm*120mm) is designed. The user defines the shape of the device, as long as the kind of use (phone-call/chat/video-call) impacts the form. In particular, when the divice is on position 1. the user can make phone-calls, when it’s at position 2. the right side is 30mm extended, thus a keyboard is appeared, and when it’s on position 3. the right side is 30mm extended again, creating a bigger screen, ideal for video-calls and movies. The design also consists of a leather protection-case, which fits with the V shape of the device. The materials used are semitransparent plastic, as the main material, magnets, which realize the extension between the three parts and leather.

Product design _keyword: seat Personal work
Goal of this project is to create a kind of seat that combines light weight, low cost and functionality, in a time-period of three days. I decided to make a chair using my grandfather’s old plastic tubes, with addition of some new. The ability to assemble it from six parts makes easier the transfer, too. The final cost was 9 euros.
