A Great Day! A full house welcomed Fr. Bur Dobbins on May 1. All three services came together in the Parish Hall to celebrate his first worship service at St. Barnabas and hear his sermon, “With God All Things Are Possible.”

Fr. Bur urged us to ask God to be a part of our lives “every minute, every hour of every day.”

He then gave us a homework assignment: to identify something we want God’s help with, such as anger, too much Internet, or love of material things, and to talk to God about our need for help with this issue as often as possible.

Summer is quickly approaching and “Egypt” is coming to St. Barnabas Episcopal Church. The church will be transformed into Egypt for Vacation Bible School during the first week of August, the 1st through the 5th, 9:00 a.m. to noon. This year’s VBS will take the children back to Egypt, where they will explore the life of Joseph who, with the help of God, moved from a prison cell to a palace.

Kids will participate in a memorable Bible-times marketplace, sing songs, play games, dig into Egyptian snacks, create Bible-time crafts, visit Joseph in prison and then in his palace home, and collect Bible Memory Makers to remind them of God’s Word. Plus, each child will learn to look for evidence of God all around them through something called God Sightings. Each day concludes at Celebration—a time of upbeat worship that gets everyone involved.

There is no charge to attend VBS at St. Barnabas. It is a gift from our church to the children and grandchildren of St. Barnabas, to their friends and to the wider Fredericksburg community. Children ages four through twelve are eligible for VBS at St. Barnabas. Registration is due by July 29.

V B S V olunteers ◊ J oin our J ourney to E gypt Here’s the fun stuff you’ll do! • Get ready to smile at the Nile at a special staff training meeting—we’ll make sure it’s fun. • Learn the music and motions for the nine amazing Egypt Holy Land Adventure songs so you can lead the singing each day. • Brush up on the Bible story and Bible verse in advance, and use the daily Bible Point often during the opening and closing activities. • Share the excitement as participants report their daily God Sightings and build a monument to our one true God. • Check out all the big-timefun games in the Pyramid Playground Leader Manual, and round up the necessary supplies. • Lead the fun at four sessions of Pyramid Playground games each day. • Be the coolest Egyptian character in town in your Egyptian costume, and share with participants fun facts about the kinds of games kids played in ancient Egypt.

Balance Sheet: A decrease of about $24,057 was due to the following:  Monthly Operations -$ 5,434 (explained below)  Moms Morning Off +$ 925 (explained below)  Funds -$15,574  Initial payment for Columbarium expansion ($10,839)  Property Repairs and Maintenance ($3,327)  Outreach ($2,078)  Prepaid Pledges +$ 2,440 Significant activity from funds was as follows: Dugat MMO Scholarship ($592), Endowment ($1,081) Monthly Operations: Overall there was a deficit of $5,434 versus a budgeted deficit of $1,063. The deficit was driven primarily by lower than budgeted income by $6,123. Expenses were under budget, but only because there was no assistant priest expense. Next month the expectation is that expenses will be over budget due to a full month of expenses for the new assistant priest. The YTD balance is still positive $12,789 versus a budgeted -$4,252. Things are still looking good.

MMO: MMO had a small surplus of $925. There will a one month of double directors salary in June with Sue retiring and Deanne replacing her. Enrollment is at 40 children with 10 teachers, this means everything is running at full+ capacity. The YTD balance is a positive $7,751.

Bill & Gwen Dugat MMO Scholarships Our scholarship fund has been such a blessing to the families of the children who have received scholarships this year. However, all available funds are already allotted for next year. The cost of one full “school year” scholarship for a child is $1613 (tuition and fees) and summer camp is $209.

Therefore, we are asking you to prayerfully consider a gift to the Dugat Scholarship Fund. The blessing to the children and their families is immeasurable and the parents are so grateful for your generosity.

Outreach Projects

The St. Barnabas Outreach Committee has been busy following our mandate to support “projects of universal giving that do unimpeachable good.” To date the committee has expended approximately 60% of its budget. Donations have been made to previously supported agencies including the Boys & Girls Club, Child Protective Services Board, Golden Hub, Kairos: Connally Unit, Kairos: Lockhart Unit, Gillespie Country Literacy Council, the Needs Council, and West Texas Water Ministry.

After doing its “due diligence” the committee has identified two exemplary organizations that are responding to the Syrian Refugee Crisis. Both Doctors Without Borders and the American Refugee Committee received A+ ratings from Charity Watch. Non-profit organizations rated exemplary by Charity Watch spend at least 75% of their funds on direct services to those in need and spend no more than $25 to raise every $100.

Parishioners are invited to submit outreach requests meeting the criteria stated above to members of The St. Barnabas Outreach Committee: Tom Christofferson (txtlc@austin.rr.com), Tom Taylor (birdways@me.com), or Susan Kimbrell (susank158@yahoo.com).

In addition, the outreach committee will provide “seed money” for the next “Non-Event” type project at St. Barnabas. In 2014 our Vestry sponsored a committee of parishioners that coordinated a community fundraising campaign raising over $70,000 for the new Community Health Worker position at the Good Samaritan Center. If you know of a community or global need, contact Father Jeff for details on how to start a “Non-Event” type project.

From the Senior Warden May was a glorious month! The Lord has blessed our church community so much! Fr. Bur’s first Sunday was a huge success and we are so thankful he and his family are here with us. The sun was shining and the grounds looked so beautiful, thanks to Pat McCormick and her team. Did you see how many people were there?

There are many thanks to go around for all who helped that day. Thank you to Luis and Patty for setting up and having everything so sparkling clean. Thank you to the men and women of the vestry who hosted the event and helped with setting up the tables and chairs for the meal, for serving the meal and for cleaning up afterwards. Thank you to the Men’s Breakfast Group and the Encouragers Youth Group who helped set up tables and chairs for the meal. Thank you to Miles Hammond and Carol Schreider for taking pictures. There were others who walked right in to help - Debbie Gorden, Julie Roseberry, Carl Luckenbach and Jan McGrath. I’m sure there were others that I didn’t see, but many thanks go to you as well. Thank you to ALL for attending and welcoming Fr. Bur and his family. He has many great ideas and activities planned for us and it is exciting! Oh! His first sermon wasn’t too bad, either!

I hope that the various committees of St. Barnabas had an opportunity to meet during May. I know when I was in the office I heard someone request that Fr. Bur come to their meeting. Summer is upon us so be watching for various activities that your children can participate in such as VBS and Camp Capers. The vestry is also discussing having another all-parish activity sometime before the summer is over.

Sue Gustin Retiring as MMO Director At the end of June, Sue Gustin, Director of the Mom’s Morning Off ministry will retire. During her tenure here, MMO has grown from under 20 children to full capacity at 40 children. “Ms. Sue“ as the children call her, has excelled in every way—hiring and guiding great teachers, managing the program and most of all – being a loving and faithful presence for the children.

It has been a blessing to serve in the Mom’s Morning Off ministry as the Director and a teacher. I am so grateful to all who trusted me and shared their precious children with me.

After much prayer and consideration, I have decided that it is time for me to step back from being the Director and spend more time with my husband and family. However, this does not mean I plan to disappear! I will be available to sub, assist with special events and support Deanne when she needs me.

I will continue as Director through Camp Barnabas and begin training my replacement, Deanne Moellering. I have known her for over 13 years since I hired her to be a teacher at First Baptist. I know you will embrace and support her as she prayerfully leads this ministry.

The MMO parents and staff have all worked together to build this ministry over the past three years and, by God’s grace, we are currently near capacity. I have been so blessed by the love and kindness shown to me by all of you.

New MMO Director My name is Deanne Moellering. I was born and raised in Fredericksburg. My husband, Darrell, and I have been married for 30 years and have three children: Brenna, 26, and twin sons, Michael and Joseph, 21.

I have been teaching in the MDO program at First Baptist for 13+ years and this is my third year with the St. Barnabas MMO ministry. In addition to teaching in these programs, I serve as the Music Ministry Coordinator at Holy Ghost Lutheran Church, where I am responsible for selecting hymns for services, four hand bell choirs, the Praise Band and am a member of the Sanctuary Choir.

God has been preparing me through my experiences and growing responsibilities to serve as the Director of MMO at St. Barnabas.

On May 16, the MMO parents hosted a going-away party for Ms. Sue and gave her a lovely James Avery necklace and earring set. The MMO children and teachers presented her with a calendar and framed memento personalized with the children’s handprints and finger prints.
