Dear Parents, The Trinity Term has been one of the busiest ever, marking a joyful return to those events which were on hold during the pandemic. Athletics and cricket have both enjoyed a busy, successful season: our musicians have given us two wonderful concerts, we have marvelled at the talents of our artists in the annual Art Show, and the Careers Fair was a huge success. The two Prize Giving events celebrated the year’s many achievements. Our Principal Guest, Professor Bijan Modarai, was delighted to return to his old school and noted that the values and holistic education he found here as a pupil remain as strong as ever. In our 120th anniversary year, with all the challenges in the wider world at the moment, this is a powerful endorsement. I wish you all the happiest of summers and look forward to seeing you again in September. With best wishes,

LAMDA SUCCESS The whole of Form 3 take London Academy of Music & Dramatic Art (LAMDA) exams in Trinity Term. This year, 99 pupils were awarded Distinction for their Grade 2 Group Acting performances and 15 gained Merits! Congratulations to the entire year-group on these excellent results!

A place at RADA Many congratulations to Caitlin MacGregor (U6), who has been awarded a place at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (RADA) on a BA Honours course in Technical Theatre and Stage Management. Caitlin has made a huge contribution to Drama at St Benedict’s over the last seven years, as a performer, director and stage manager.

Andrew Johnson Headmaster

Dear Parents, Another academic year has come to pass, and the 120th anniversary of the School has been a source of great celebration. It has certainly been a busy time with many trips, including the welcome return of the residentials: the PGL Trip, French Trip, and Outward Bound trip to the Lake District all made a deep impression upon the boys and girls who participated. The latter part of the term included the SBJS Music Festival, Art Workshops, and the Sports Day events, with Bede winning the House Cup. The splendid Form 2 production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory brought the term to an energetic end, with outstanding performances from the children.

BARONESS BENNETT

We were delighted to welcome Baroness Bennett of Manor Castle to St Benedict’s – Green Party Leader 2012– 2016 – to talk about ‘The Future of Green Politics’.

With best wishes,

Natalie Bennett began by explaining her background in Agricultural Science, and how that informs the environmental policies she advocates. She then went on to answer student questions about reforming the electoral system, corporate greenwashing, and how we can all act to address the urgent climate change crisis. Her central point was: “Politics is something that you should partake in. It’s not something that should be done to you”.

Rob Simmons Junior School Headmaster

Caitlin MacGregor (U6), who chaired the talk, said: “Natalie Bennet’s comments were truly thought-provoking, questioning how the government is representing the opinions of the population, the effect of past generations on our current climate crisis, and new hope for green legislation following the recent local elections.”

I wish you all great happiness during the remainder of the summer and look forward to welcoming you in early September.

ST BENEDICT’S LECTURE SERIES:

Every year, at the start of the Trinity Term, the Upper 4th leave behind the normal routine of school life to undertake a residential retreat at Saint Cassian’s, Kintbury in Berkshire. The retreat provides students with a chance to stop, think and pray, and time to focus on who are they called to be. It also asks them to question their awareness of social

injustice, the way in which they form the ‘fundamental islands’ of their identity and their own spiritual awareness. Activities include a low ropes course, an Emmaus walk, and most importantly having the time together to pray and celebrate Mass. Jonathan Edgar (Lay Chaplain)

Form 2 went on an adventurous trip to the Lake District this term. After an early start, the children travelled by train to Penrith, close to their final destination of the Outward Bound Centre on the edge of Ullswater Lake. The next few days saw all children participating in a range of challenging experiences which encouraged them to learn new skills, face their fears and boost their teambuilding and listening skills. These included camping, climbing, rowing, swimming in the lake, tunnelling, climbing local mountains and cooking over a camp stove.

Representatives from over 120 organisations offered insight and advice to hundreds of St Benedict’s students on a wide range of careers, including medicine, engineering, law, teaching, marketing, architecture and journalism, at the biennial St Benedict’s Careers Fair. Stands were staffed by parents and Old Priorians (alumni), as well as various London organisations. Eight Speaker Presentations covered a range of themes, such as interview technique, finding your first job, studying medicine, law, and apprenticeships. “I enjoyed learning outside the normal classroom situation.” Joshan

Hurst Castle Spit, Hampshire (Lower 5th) Our aim was to assess the need for protection of Hurst Castle Spit. The sea defences up along the beach included groynes, rock armour and a sea wall, to protect the beach at Milford where tourism is a large part of the economy. We made a rough sketch of the spit and the castle in the distance. Behind the castle we could see the Isle of Wight and the salt marshes. Afterwards, we walked to the salt marsh behind the spit, identifying different plants on the shingle and near the water over a 10m radius using survey poles and a measuring tape. Plants such as sea rocket, sea kale and glasswort were found. We collected this data and recorded it in our booklets.

ST BENEDICT’S NEWS

After lunch we explored Hurst Castle, where we found an amazing view of the sea and the spit we had just walked upon.

16

We then used our survey poles to measure each incline and decline of sediment horizontally along the beach and noticed a pattern emerging: the peak of the sediment was at in the middle almost resembling a pyramid shape. Each group used two survey poles, measuring tape and a clinometer. Harvey Sandhu

Stratford and the Olympic Park (Lower 5th) Our field trip to Stratford was to evaluate the regeneration of the area, which was initiated to create a legacy for the 2012 Olympics. We carried out several bipolar surveys at the River Lea, the Velodrome, the Olympic Stadium, Westfield shopping centre and the East Village, assessing the integrated transport connections, leisure facilities, sport facilities, employment, housing, and green space. We rated the opportunities at each site on a scale of -5 to 5 before reaching our conclusion on how effective and beneficial the regeneration has been overall. In addition, we conducted two field sketches at the Wetland Bowl in Queen Elizabeth Park and the East Village, which tested our observational skills as well as helping us to gauge how these areas have developed over time.

After our visit to Stratford, we could appreciate the transformative revival of this once industrialised and somewhat neglected area. The legacy of the Olympics lives on with the sustainability of each of the facilities installed there, providing leisure and entertainment for everyday public use.

The weather was warm, the setting idyllic and it was near the end of Trinity term. Start Bay and Plymouth were the focus of our field investigations. The sands at Slapton form a barrier beach with a freshwater lagoon, Slapton Ley, just behind. The beach was used as practice for the D-Day landings and there’s a Sherman tank at Torcross. A number of students chose to investigate coastal management and beach morphology along the bay, involving surveying and sampling methods. wanted to do, and St Benedict’s gave me the tools to start on that journey, and to became one of the youngest professors of vascular surgery in 2017.”

In his address, the Headmaster outlined the many events and achievements of the year. Highlighting St Benedict’s 120th anniversary, he referred to the school’s motto: “A minimis incipe – ‘from the smallest beginnings’ – is a reminder that all great things begin with small steps. It has been our school’s guiding philosophy for 120 years. This powerful idea surely goes to the heart of what education is about: potential. The potential for growth, discovery and achievement at every stage of our lives. Education is a rich and joyful journey – from the very special early years, through to senior school education, building confident knowledge, always allowing the freedom to explore what particularly inspires us at any stage.”

He continued by referring to the Headmaster’s speech: “The values Mr Johnson talked about are the same values as when I was here: academic excellence, leadership, resilience (and you will need these qualities), encouraging integrity, kindness, and compassion. St Benedict’s really does provide a holistic education.”

Professor Modarai spoke about his time at St Benedict’s: “I came to St Benedict’s as a wide-eyed boy from Iran in 1988. It was a school of inclusivity and diversity, and I can see that the same is true here today. You know, I do remember sitting where all of you are, at your stage, dreaming of being a surgeon. ST BENEDICT’S NEWS

This term the boys have turned their hands to Cricket. Fixtures have included Forms 1 and 2 playing St John’s Northwood, Form 1 playing Claire’s Court, while the Upper Preps gained their first experience of competitive Cricket against Hampton Prep and Westminster Under.

26

They have enjoyed testing their batting and bowling in competition and have also made great use of the brand-new Cricket nets, which have provided an excellent space to hone their skills, translating to some good performances out on the square. Form 2 have been excellently captained by Alex Bishop, while Christo Kopoi has been the standout player for the Form 1 team, notably scoring 50 (not out) against St John’s, to help win the match. The final few weeks of term bring a few shorter format tournaments for the boys to gain experience: Form 2 will play at the St Paul’s 6-a-side festival, and Form 1 will compete in the Reigate 6’s festival. Mr Jukes (Head of Junior School Boys’ Games)

The girls from PP3 to Form 2 have enjoyed participating in Athletics during games where they have focused on speed and distance running, hurdles, long jump, javelin and shotput. We have enjoyed successful fixtures against St Augustine’s and Nottinghill and Ealing from Upper Prep to Form 2 where pupils were able to display their sporting talent. Forms 1 and 2 have been the first year-groups to participate in tennis since it has been added to our games program. They have

been focusing on rallying on their forehand and backhand and have also learnt the scoring system which was used by the Form 1s in a fixture vs Mill Hill and Belmont. The co-curricular cricket club has got off to a fine start with strong numbers in attendance. We really look forward to playing in a Form 3 tournament on 29/06 which for almost all pupils will be their first competitive fixture. Mr O’Hara (Head of Junior School Girls’ Games)
