St Be n edic t ’s Bu r s a ry F u n d GIVING A HELPING HAND TO BUILD A BRIGHTER FUTURE

Why Yo ur Support Mat ter s GIVING A HELPING HAND TO BUILD A BRIGHTER FUTURE “The opportunity my son has right now, would not be possible without the Bursary Award which was offered to him. My son always tries to set a good example and work to the standard expected from a bursary scholar. When my son received his offer he couldn’t believe his good fortune, his celebration lasted for weeks, he still has the offer letter in his folder. There are so many extracurricular activities on offer as well, my son loves the

debating club, really enjoys going there, going to play chess and he has been chosen as Captain in his fencing group even though he has never practiced it before! For my part, I am spreading the word about St Benedict’s School within circles of the parents I know, I have left brochures about St Benedict’s for parents to view at my school where my younger son goes.

I am very grateful for the opportunity given, opportunities like this can be life changing, the children have the opportunity to access the best education and as a consequence they will contribute to society when their turn comes. He will never forget the chance given to him.” OTC – Current Parent

“The supporting and encouraging environment helped to develop my confidence” “I was lucky enough to benefit from a bursary when I joined St Benedict’s at the age of 11, where I hugely enjoyed both the academic and sporting sides of the school. The supporting and encouraging environment helped to develop my confidence and character and I am fortunate to still be in close contact with many good friends I made whilst at school. As part of her will, my mother made a bursary donation to recognise my parents’ gratitude for the opportunities that St Benedict’s offered me.”

Help us Make a Re al Difference A BURSARY IS FINANCIAL SUPPORT AWARDED TO A CHILD BY THE HEADMASTER AND THE BURSARY COMMITTEE, TO ASSIST IN HELPING TO PAY SCHOOL FEES, AND IS AWARDED ON THE BASIS OF NEED.

St Benedict’s is committed to supporting all children to reach their full potential, in both academic and personal growth. The St Anselm Bursary Award enables us to extend this commitment to a number of promising and talented children, lacking the financial means, to benefit from a high-quality Catholic independent education. Currently, bursaries are funded from donations made by the St Benedict’s community of Old Priorians (Alumni), former and current parents, and friends of St Benedict’s.

It is extremely important to us that we continue to widen the St Benedict’s welcome, especially to those from disadvantaged backgrounds. By supporting the Bursary Fund, you will be supporting our mission to offer transformational opportunities to children irrespective of their parental financial means Thank you,

Andrew Johnson | Headmaster

“The most worthwhile way of supporting your old school” “I have always felt that the most worthwhile way of supporting your old school is by making a Bursary Donation. To help a boy or girl who comes from a less financially advantaged background to benefit from a caring Catholic ethos and a first class academic school education is very rewarding. I benefited personally in that way when I came to St Benedict’s in 1947 and I am eternally grateful to the charitable organisation that made it possible for me to come. Anyone who has been helped in their school years or career should seriously consider repaying their personal benefit by making a Bursary Gift”.

“My Bursary students were universally bright and well-motivated” “When I was a teacher at the school for almost four decades, I thoroughly supported the Bursary scheme. It gave me the opportunity to nurture the academic development of pupils who otherwise would have been unable to attend the school. Furthermore, such students contributed to the development of others, as they were universally bright and well-motivated. They therefore helped to stimulate intellectual debate and to foster a positive learning environment in the classroom, providing benefit for all.”

The Lord Pat ten of Barnes GIVING A HELPING HAND TO BUILD A BRIGHTER FUTURE My College at Oxford often quoted a Catholic writer and poet who had been an old member and wrote a poem often called “Balliol made me”. I have always thought that my own creation for life started rather earlier! I went to St. Benedict’s on a scholarship from a primary school. I was as happy and fulfilled as it is possible for a boy to be. I was well taught, inspired and shaped for life. I have a huge amount for which to be grateful to the school. I am keen to help other boys and girls secure the same opportunity that I had. That is the main reason why I support these Bursary funds. When you have been lucky in life you owe it to others to have the same chances.

“Excelsior! Orandum est ut sit mens sana in corpore sano” “A minimis incipe! Begin from very little things? How incredibly the School has grown structurally in the last 63 years! Begin from very little children! How the School has expanded...into the Nursery and the new Sixth Form building! Excelsior! Orandum est ut sit mens sana in corpore sano.”

“There is something very special, yet hard to put into words about being an OP” “I was educated at St Benedict’s from the age of five up to A Levels. The rounded character and other attributes that I developed in the classroom and on the sports fields have had an enormously positive impact on my career and life in general. There is something very special, yet hard to put into words, about being an Old Priorian. Enabling those who cannot afford to benefit from the privilege of a St Benedict’s education, can only be a good thing.”
