Description

The Chaplaincy is a comfortable place to come and meet with the Chaplaincy Team and reps. It is a place to plan future ethoslinked events for forms, divisions or the whole school. There are also prayer and discussion groups to reflect on our Benedictine values as well as meetings to plan events to help good causes in the local community. The Chaplaincy is also a nice place where you can just drop in – everybody is welcome! Check the Chaplaincy noticeboard (by the lunch queue) for scheduled meetings and events.

Recently the Upper and Middle School SVP has organised fundraising activities (e.g. Christmas card sale, candyfloss sale, Charity Day talent show) in the school to raise money for St Luke’s Hospice and the Catholic Children’s Society. Very rewarding and also great fun!

Description

The Philosophy Society meets to discuss topics in theology, philosophy and ethics. These include moral dilemmas, religion in contemporary society and important philosophical questions such as ‘What makes human being unique?’, ‘Do animals have feelings?’ and, ‘Could God have created extra-terrestrial life?’ The society provides excellent preparation for those wishing to study philosophy and theology at ‘A’ Level or university and is also beneficial for those with an interest in the humanities and law.

Where Geography ICT Staff involved Geography Department Age range All Description We are a pupil-led group seeking to lead on climate action and innovation in the school. Run by Upper 6th students, the committee brings together all year-groups to contribute to environmental awareness and campaigns in the school. We are currently planning for a school garden with a view to receiving an award from the Royal Horticultural Society. The committee follows the Eco Schools Environmental Award Scheme to encourage everybody to take responsibility for the school environment. We look at topics that include waste, energy, biodiversity and healthy living. Having achieved the Silver Award, our target is to work towards Green Flag status. We particularly need pupils who are interested in global issues and can encourage and motivate others to get the whole school involved.

Where Helikon Centre Staff involved Mr Scicinski Age range Sixth Form Description This is an intellectual society for the Sixth Form, particularly those with Oxbridge ambitions. Lower 6th meetings are very varied and focus on thinking clearly and quickly and being able to discuss and articulate thoughts and opinions, particularly about intended areas of study. Some sessions are run by guest specialists, focusing for example on rapid and critical reading or the psychology behind a quality conversation. In the Trinity Term a Project Based Learning group project is undertaken, and a fun session is run for E and A pupils from the Junior School. The Upper 6th group is primarily a forum for talks by students themselves or guests they have invited.

They are aimed at Lower 6th students who are looking for a way to learn new skills, embellish existing knowledge and strengthen their Personal Statements. There are thousands of university created courses available to choose from that students can work through at their own pace. Students attend these sessions to obtain support and work on their MOOCs.

The St Benedict’s MUN group attends conferences where they are allocated a nation, then discuss and debate various issues from the point of view of that country and attempt to reach agreements to solve world problems.

Where Library Staff involved Mr Wijnberg Age range All Description Do you see yourself as the next Grandmaster? Or possibly chess is a game you have always dreamed of playing, but no one could teach you. In addition to the more formal Monday and Friday sessions chess sets are available in the Library at lunchtime every day, and everybody from beginners to the very experienced is encouraged to participate. A major whole school tournament takes place in the Lent Term.

At Bennies Crochet and Knitting Club we will start off by learning the basics of how to knot or crochet. The first project will be to make an amazing scarf ready for winter.

Spivey Age range Upper 4th and above Description The CCF conducts military-style training with the support of the Regular Army. Cadets commit to attend every Monday afternoon, as well as regular training events each term and a week-long Summer Camp, and there are many other voluntary camps and courses throughout the year. Cadets have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of activities including shooting, adventurous training and tactical exercises. Senior cadets are trained in leadership and given responsibility for younger cadets. Cadets may also complete the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award at Bronze or Silver level as part of their CCF training.

Where CCF Building Staff involved SI Sadiq HAC Age range Lower 4th and above Description Open to anybody in Lower 4th and CCF cadets only from Upper 4th. The Corps learns to play some of the oldest and most distinguished marches on the side drum, bass drum, tenor drum, flute, piccolo and cymbals. Drummers will be involved in public performances and events at school, locally and further afield. Drummers can attend two music camps a year.

The award consists of a service, skills, physical recreation and an expedition. Those joining the CCF can do the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award with the CCF and should contact Mr Sadiq to sign up.

What skills do you need to work with robots? Which subjects should you study? How can you start your dream career in robotics? Robots are the future, are already here and are everywhere! Many people are interested in pursuing a career in robotics. Robotics engineers are learners, masters of all trades and know a little bit about everything (at least everything important to robotics). Robotics is a truly interdisciplinary career. If you want to work with robots you could study electronics, computer science, biotechnology, manufacturing, cognitive science… Robot kits, like Vex Robots, are a good place to start playing with robotics at home, as are embedded systems like Raspberry Pi.

AI is based on the idea that computers can learn on their own, with your help. Based on some of the projects found in ‘Machine Learning for Kids’ you will learn in a hands-on way how to create a system that can tell the difference between a sheep and a cow, learn how to play and improve in noughts and crosses, create a Chatbot that can answer your questions on a topic and train a machine learning model to win at Pacman. The secrets behind machine learning and AI will begin to be revealed, and you can explore how to train these models better and introduce bias.

This club is for those who would like to try their hand at watercolour painting. The club will explore pencil drawing, water soluble pencil work, watercolour pencil work and watercolour painting. The aim is to learn, improve skills and develop techniques to produce watercolour paintings. There will also be the opportunity to utilise a watercolour sketchbook to capture and paint scenes outdoors. The meetings will be relaxing and fun – not intense – so please come and try your hand. Eventually those who wish can have their paintings displayed.

Regular rehearsals for the full orchestra and sectionals ensure that all our players develop their ensemble and performance skills. Pupils should be approaching Grade 5 or above. Open to all levels and suitable for beginners and experienced yogis alike. Yoga is a combination of breathing and movement which improves posture, flexibility, strength, balance, coordination and motor skills. It has been proved to help people recognise and honour all emotions, learning to trust their instincts. It helps people to build confidence in the body and the mind by becoming more in tune with both. It teaches breathing techniques that increase energy and decrease anxiety, providing effective coping strategies for stress. It is ideal for athletes and scholars alike and benefits all who practise it. We look forward to welcoming you.
