In a year of engagement, achievement and unity, I am delighted to present to you the St Catherine’s Impact of Giving Report: 2016 –17. We are grateful for the strong support achieved from across our community on the Her Future Begins Here Junior School campaign. This support has demonstrated a unity of vision – parents, alumni and staff – all working and giving together to deliver the best possible resources, educational programs and facilities for our girls. The Her Future Begins Here Junior School campaign commenced last year and, in only a short time, I am delighted to advise that we are close to realising our $3 million target. The support we have achieved has enabled construction to begin with confidence with families seeing cranes, bulldozers and trucks laying foundations and footings for a new Barbreck before they left for the end of Term 2. On behalf of the Foundation Board, thank you to everyone who has supported our campaign – I know many families and alumni have donated for the first time and we have seen growth across nearly all Foundation membership levels, including several new members of the Jeanie Hood Society. It was terrific to see such a huge turnout and many new Foundation families receive their membership pin at our annual thank you celebration in May at the National Gallery of Victoria.
Our community showed the true spirit of philanthropy by donating considerably to scholarships for our Indigenous and rural/regional students – providing the opportunity for girls from across Australia with opportunities which our parents and alumni know can be truly life-changing. I would like to recognise our Foundation President Anne Court (Lowry ’58), who has retired after more than six years at the end of June. Anne served as President with a resolute commitment to the wellbeing of our girls and we will miss her great humour and panache. The Board looks forward to working with incoming President, Gina Israel (Shackell ’76) in the years ahead.
“Thank you again for your ongoing support.” – Mr Wayne Kent CHAIR, ST CATHERINE’S SCHOOL FOUNDATION BOARD
Finally, thank you again for your ongoing support. We very much appreciate that you have again demonstrated your belief in our girls and the power of education and, in particular, a St Catherine’s education.
Mr Wayne Kent CHAIR, ST CATHERINE’S SCHOOL FOUNDATION BOARD
Incoming Foundation President Gina Israel and Chair Wayne Kent
“Thanks to our community’s strong support, we are able to fund two key new features of the Junior School – a Language Lab and the Library and Resource Centre.” – Mr Stuart Galbraith DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT AND COMMUNITY RELATIONS
Welcome to the second Impact of Giving Report which reports annually on the work, progress and activities of the St Catherine’s School Foundation. Thanks to the generous support of the St Catherine’s community, the Foundation has made real and consolidated progress over the past financial year 2016–2017.
redevelopment and the positive impact that it will have on the education of our girls.
The Foundation has directed significant philanthropic funds from our community to the redevelopment of our Junior School, our largest project in 50 years. We have also been able to fund new boarding scholarships for girls from rural and regional Australia and our Indigenous communities.
Thank you to our parent Campaign Team and the School’s Development and Community Relations team for their committed work, often extending to late into the evening. We very much enjoyed meeting new families across the School and hearing how your daughters and granddaughters are looking forward to the new Junior School, in particular the new facilities for science and technology, language, music and literacy. Many families commented that their giving was in response to the nurturing and empowering spirit of Barbreck and how that has, or is, making a positive impact on the education and development of their daughters.
2017 Campaign Team: Cameron Bertalli, Wayne Kent, Michelle Carroll, Sherrie Zeng, Stuart Galbraith, Sally Joubert, Jim Shergold, Lachlan Armstrong. Absent: Claudette Passon.
THE BEST START FOR HER FUTURE
Over the past year, the Campaign Team has focused on engagement of parents and alumni, holding a range of information sessions, individual briefings and other events to outline the vision of the Junior School
Thank you to everyone for your fantastic support – we know and appreciate that families have different capacities to contribute and are thrilled that, together, over 150 families have joined our cause.
Earlier this year, the Principal unveiled plans for an extensive redevelopment of the Edna Holmes Centre for Science commencing in Term 4 this year. Our girls will live and work in a global, complex and highly technological world and this $3 million project is critical in the future. We look forward to meeting with our parents and alumni over the next year to inform more details about the project and the opportunities it will present to our students. With both the Junior School redevelopment and Centre for Science projects underway, the Foundation Board is committed to keeping our supporters informed
through our Campaign e-Bulletin. We welcome your feedback on how we can strengthen our communication with you. A RECORD PERFORMANCE
Our Annual Giving program brings together our whole community – parents, alumni and staff in support of the School’s key projects and scholarship programs. This year, the program was also linked to the Her Future Begins Here Junior School campaign and we achieved a phenomenal result, raising
just under $200,000. The extraordinary result was the highest ever recorded and almost double our performance from last year. Thanks to our community’s strong support, we are able to fund two key new features of the Junior School – a Language Lab and the Library and Resource Centre. The new Language Lab will unlock new and progressive teaching, as well as both a physical space for concrete learning and the facilities to quickly connect students to digital activities. Located at the heart CONTINUED 4
of the new Junior School, the Library and Resource Centre will be an inclusive and welcoming environment supported by the latest technology and engaging literature.
School Council, as member for ten years and Council Chair for seven. New members of the Foundation were also presented with their Foundation pin.
The record support we achieved this year will enable us to deliver on our commitment to increase our enrolment of Indigenous students, with two new placements funded biennially, as well as continuing our School’s proud history of providing a welcoming second home for girls from rural and regional Australia. The School will ensure that all our girls who board at St Catherine’s have the support and opportunities they need to excel and be prepared for university and life.
The Jeanie Hood Society was formally launched in October last year for our Benefactor and Patron members. It has been wonderful to welcome new members to the Society over the year and we look forward to again hosting them at our annual Thank You Dinner with the Principal, Chair of Council and President of the Foundation.
A FOUNDATION FOR THE FUTURE
It was our pleasure to host around 100 Foundation members and guests at our annual thank you evening in May. This year’s event included an exclusive viewing of the Van Gogh – The Seasons exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria. The evening also provided an opportunity to thank Clare Cannon (Darling ’77) for her significant service to the St Catherine’s
Stephen O’Connor, Annick Houle, Wayne Kent, Gillian Ruan and Michelle Carrol
The School is extremely grateful for the late Jeannette Fraser (‘51) gifting to the School a significant bequest in her Will. Jeannette had a lifetime experience with our School, not just as a student but as the School Sister (nurse) from 1959–1961 and again from 1965–1971. She was also a member of the SCOGA Committee for 40 years, retiring in 2003 and receiving Honorary Life membership in 2004. Thank you to everyone who came along to our 2017 Yulendj Art Exhibition. We are indebted to you for your show of support and goodwill for our Indigenous Scholarship Program. We sold considerably more artwork and enjoyed many more visitors throughout the week than we did at our inaugural exhibition in 2015. In closing, I would like to record my personal thanks to Anne Court (Lowry ’58) for her leadership of the Foundation. Anne frequently opened our Foundation Board meeting with a gracious remark, laugh or a personal update on our St Catherine’s

family before keeping us on our mission to support a first-class education and co-curricular experience for our girls. I am delighted to welcome Gina Israel (Shackell ’76) as President of the Foundation. Gina will be known to many in our community as School Captain in 1976, member of the SCOGA Committee from 2006–2012 (including a period as Treasurer) and a member of the Foundation since 2012. Gina’s mother Patricia Shackell (Sargood ’46), daughter Juliet Israel (’09) and aunt, Dame Adelaide Doughty DBE (‘24) (Nil Magnum Nisi Bonum recipient) also attended our School. Thank you to everyone who has supported the Foundation over the past year and contributed to a significant year of growth and achievement. Your support is making a very positive difference to the education of our girls.
Mr Stuart Galbraith DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT AND COMMUNITY RELATIONS

LIFE CHANGING OPPORTUNITIES FOR GENERATIONS OF GIRLS
For scholarship recipients from rural and regional Australia, boarding at St Catherine’s has a special and personal meaning. Amy Martin’s experience is no different. Amy Martin (’14) was born and raised in Mansfield, a small Victorian country town well known by many of our skiing families. The boarding scholarship Amy received meant she was able to attend St Catherine’s and experience a wide range of opportunities not available at home – “the girls were all enthusiastic to learn and the teachers were beyond enthusiastic. The boarding house was, quite literally, a home away from home and the staff were incredible supportive. “Living with fifty other girls made me well prepared for university and boarding at Deakin University, Geelong. My Bachelor of Medical Imaging degree has included clinical placements in diverse locations such as Portland and Darwin, requiring me to live with new people whilst studying at the same time.”
“Essentially my scholarship provided me with a better education, more confidence and more interpersonal skills than I ever could have imagined. My closest friends today are still the girls I went to School with at St Catherine’s.” Alumnae such as Axi Cooper (’05) have embraced the opportunity to give back to the School and provide life changing opportunities for the next generation of girls, just like Amy.
Craig Cooper, Axi Cooper (’05) and Astrida Cooper
“Having attended St Catherine’s since kindergarten, from an early age I often heard teachers and Principals mention the importance of our motto ‘Nothing Is Great Unless It Is Good’. It was not until I was out of School that I understood the virtue of this perspective."
“I am proud to support the rural scholarship program so that together with other gifts, the entirety of the St Catherine’s experience can be offered to young women from country Victoria.” FOR JEMIMAH AND FUTURE ST CATHERINE’S GIRLS TO FOLLOW
ELC parents Erica Gill and Brendan O’Brien are at the commencement of their St Catherine’s journey, with their daughter Jemimah in ELC 4YO and son Rupert beginning in ELC 3YO next year. However, both parents are excited about what the School offers, its philosophy and holistic view of education and its students. “We are particularly amazed by the sense of community between students, teachers, staff and parents. Michelle Carroll and Alana Moor are an impressive team. With both at the helm driving the Junior School redevelopment and utilising their combined depth of experience, knowledge, and vision, this project was always going to be pretty special.”
“I look back fondly at my time, grateful for the life-long friendships I made, the dedicated teachers who were invested in me, and the independent thinking and leadership skills I developed through a symbiotic relationship with the School. Amy Martin (’14)
Erica Gill, Rupert O'Brien, Brendan O'Brien and Jemimah O'Brien
“Knowing that Jemimah would benefit from this amazing initiative, and the importance of it, we wanted to support the Her Future Begins Here campaign. Not only will Jemimah and her peers reap the full benefit of the new Junior School but also girls for the generations to come.”
year. Kayla and Jasmine have settled in very well, joining local netball teams and contributing artwork to this year’s Yulendj Arts Exhibition. Jasmine’s stunning work was subsequently awarded first prize in the Years 12-16 category in the Katherine Regional Arts NAIDOC Week 2017 Art Competition.
“We feel our contribution to this initiative will go way beyond the gates of St Catherine’s with the girls passing through this facility and graduating, and following a path that will no doubt give back to the wider community in whichever field they follow.”
Our two Year 9 Indigenous students, Nina and Kayla, are continuing to do well and have enjoyed participating in the Heyington to Highlands program in Fiji. Kayla was presented with a Student Achievement Resilience Award from the Yalari Foundation last year for demonstrating qualities of strength, courage and an enduring spirit.
“We are particularly passionate in supporting girls’ education and know the importance it places in today’s society at the grass roots of education in working towards narrowing or eradicating the gender gap.” PROUDLY GROWING OUR INDIGENOUS STUDENT COMMUNITY
We were delighted to welcome two new Year 7 Indigenous students, Kayla and Jasmine from Katherine in the Northern Territory this
Due to the ongoing support of our community, we are able to continue providing opportunities for young Indigenous students from across Australia. The School is committed to enrolling two Year 7 students who have been awarded a Yalari Scholarship, on a biennial intake, for the duration of their secondary education. The St Catherine’s Indigenous Scholarship program provides full boarding and academic scholarships and is a vital component of the enrichment of our culturally diverse School community. Our commitment is that every St Catherine’s Indigenous student will have access to the education, experiences and guidance required to realise their true potential.
