2017–2018
Welcome to the Foundation's Impact of Giving Report: 2017-18. Over the past year, our key focus has been to successfully complete the Her Future Begins Here campaign. This campaign supports the redevelopment of our Junior School, Barbreck, our largest building project in 50 years. Thanks to the very generous support of the St Catherine’s community, we have exceeded our initial campaign target of $3 million. This is a fantastic result and is very much valued and appreciated by students and staff. To help us to equip and resource the Junior School, we are now aiming for $3.5 million in gifts by the time we formally close the campaign at the end of 2018. It was wonderful to see so many smiling and excited faces from our Barbreck girls when they first walked through their new classrooms and facilities. No doubt, this excitement will continue as they experience their purpose-built Music and Art Studios, STEM Laboratory, Language Lab and Library & Resource Centre. All this has been made possible because of the philanthropic partnership of the St Catherine’s community.

Thanks to the generous support of our community, we also look forward to the completion of the $3 million upgrade to the laboratories in the Edna Holmes Centre for Science. This project will transform the teaching environment, extend student exploration and discovery, and prepare our girls for 21st century careers in science and technology. We recently welcomed former Principal, Ms Dorothy Pizzey AM, past boarders, Council members and staff to celebrate 20 years of boarding at Illawarra. Through your generous support, we have enabled rural and regional boarders and Indigenous boarders to achieve their potential and build a lifelong love for learning through a St Catherine’s education. I know you share our belief that St Catherine’s is truly a place where her future begins. Thank you to our Campaign Team, Foundation Board, Principal, Development & Community Relations Office, staff and, particularly our supporters, for achieving a great result this year. We could not have done it without your support.

“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” – Helen Keller The St Catherine’s School community has achieved so much over the past year and it is my pleasure to report to you on our key achievements and results. In partnership with the Foundation, the School has made considerable progress on its two key major projects: • the redevelopment of our Junior School, Barbreck • the upgrade to the Edna Holmes Centre for Science We have been overwhelmed by the support received, not only in reaching our $3 million initial target for the Junior School redevelopment project but also in the number and range of gifts obtained – thank you. We are very grateful for the support received from across our community of alumni, parents, international families and staff. This generosity has been inspiring to be a part of and a testament to our growing spirit of philanthropy.

Some of the key campaign statistics are included in this report. We know that for many families, the decision to contribute to the Junior School campaign was a result of their personal conviction for Barbreck, not just its amazing new educational facilities, but in the nurturing and empowerment of their daughter(s). We are pleased to share a few of their stories on the following page. We were delighted to recognise and celebrate the School’s philanthropic successes and achievements at our annual social evening in May 2018. This year, our annual Foundation event was held in the grand La Trobe Reading Room at the State Library of Victoria. We were also honoured to welcome our benefactors to tour the new Junior School prior to its opening in June. At the time of writing, we have approximately 75 families who each contributed over $10,000 to the Junior School campaign. These families will have their generosity recognised through an innovative art installation in the new Library and Resource Centre. Bookmark her Future will be a colourful and meaningful display with a much-treasured family book framed and displayed in the installation for many years to come. It has been wonderful to hear the joy and fond recollections of families in choosing their special book. I trust you will enjoy reading some of these stories shared in this report.
In 2017, the School’s Annual Giving achieved its highest ever result thanks to your support and I am pleased to report that in 2018, we again received over $100,000 in donations. This will enable the School to complete its major capital works and offer new scholarships for Indigenous and rural and regional students. This generosity is particularly timely as the School celebrated 20 years of boarding at Illawarra in May.
Finally, I would like to extend sincere thanks to the organising committee of ‘A Winter’s Night’, especially our own ‘tour de force’, Lisa Steven and brilliant co-chair, Liz Addison-Baker. It was an outstanding occasion bringing together our community with the net proceeds exceeding $105,000. The funds will be put towards the Edna Holmes Centre for Science project, which will help prepare our girls for 21st century careers in science and technology.
The Foundation Board has commenced the process of refreshing its bequest program, which will include consulting with alumni, past parents and longserving staff. The program recognises that philanthropic support in the form of a gift in your Will, is an enduring way to support current and future girls and strengthen the School’s future. We look forward to formally launching the program next year and sincerely thank all individuals and families who have notified the School of their intention to leave a gift in their Will.
Thank you again for your amazing support in 2017-18 – it will make a considerable and positive impact on the lives of St Catherine’s students for many years to come.
Mr Stuart Galbraith DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT AND COMMUNITY RELATIONS
The teamwork, dedication and enthusiasm of our rowers and their parents has produced some excellent results and personal achievements in 2017-18. Thank you to our Heyington Club families who have again dug deep to enable the purchase of another leading practice Empacher rowing boat, further reinforcing our commitment to providing the best facilities for our students. Giving For Her Future Education is the Foundation Lisa and Martin James’ daughter Claudia is a Year 10 student at St Catherine’s School. They also have a son who attends a leading private boys’ school. “We are proud and supportive of both schools and actively contribute where we can,” Lisa said. “We believe that education is the foundation of life and the greatest gift we can give to our children. All of our daughters deserve, and are entitled to, the same opportunities as our sons. Our support of the Junior School redevelopment is to build on the investment in our daughters, as many other families have done before us and hopefully an increasing number of families into the future.”
The Best We Can Give Her Kate and Mark Nilsen’s daughter Millie joined St Catherine’s as a Prep student and is now in her final year in the Junior School. As Kate described, “our family’s contribution to the new Junior School was driven by the desire to
6
ensure that St Catherine's continue to educate and cultivate young ladies to the best of their ability. The new Barbreck will offer this in a modern and positive environment incorporating leading technology. The formative years of a child's life are incredibly important, so it was paramount to us that our daughter’s education and environment be the best we can give her.”
Making the Most Out of Life “Education is a critical factor in empowering our children to achieve their personal best and to arm them with the tools to meet life’s challenges,” said Scott Favaloro, father to Amelie (Year 2) and Chloé (Year 5). “Jane and I want to give our daughters the best possible education, not just for their own personal happiness and success, but also to contribute to society for the betterment of others. We are pleased to do what we can to support St Catherine’s, its values and the wonderful environment for learning and development that the new Barbreck will provide our daughters and those that go after them.”

In Their Own Words For many families participating in Bookmark her Future, the choice of book to be displayed in the new Junior School Library and Resource Centre was particularly meaningful and a reflection of their values, culture and time spent reading together. Thank you to the three families who agreed to share their story with us.

A Beautiful, Inspiring Story “Bookmark her Future was an opportunity for our family to express our gratitude for the nurturing, positive and solid start St Catherine’s has given our girls in their early years”, said Julie Bertalli, mother of Arkie (Year 6) and Scarlett (Year 1). Arkie often becomes lost in books, particularly character studies. “Mum will be calling me for dinner and I just don’t hear her. The War that Saved My Life by Kimberley Brubaker Bradley was worse than ever! The children in this book are sad and neglected, living a bleak life and then the country goes to war. Through the kindness and then love of a stranger, they start a new life and what started out as something to be feared becomes beautiful and loving. It is a hopeful and happy story set in terrible times. Books let my sister and I see how other people live, their challenges, emotions and experiences, and gives us ideas and a sense of compassion. Books make us see our own lives so differently,” Arkie said.
A Family Tradition
The Power of Love
For parents Paula and Stuart Moir, it was important that they chose a book that their entire family had loved. “Mr Galliano’s Circus by Enid Blyton was the first chapter book that we read to each of our children. This much-loved story from my childhood was an instant hit with Ruby (Year 9), Luke and Polly (Year 3),” Paula said.
With the passing of her Mum when she was a child, Chrissy Ryan (Graham ’79) was determined to never miss an opportunity to tell her children how much she loves them.
“They were captivated by the characters and colour of the tale, as the turning of pages magically brought the travelling circus scene to life. We had a special fondness for the patience, love and laughter that was portrayed in the relationships between the different performing animals and their quirky trainers.
“When discussing with my daughters (Emma ’06 and Eliza ’11) what book we felt best represented us and who we are, the beautiful story of Guess How Much I Love You by Sam McBratney sums us up. All my children know the enormous amount of love I have for them, and I feel that love in return every single day,” Chrissy said.
When we discussed our selection with the children, their faces all lit up, and smiles spread across their faces as they each recalled the weeks spent at bedtime unravelling this adventure. Their reaction confirmed this as the perfect choice to represent what reading, books and storytelling means to our family,” Paula said.
