St Catherine's School Foundation Impact of Giving Report 2023

IMPACT OF GIVING

Enhancing Educational Opportunities

During 2023, our wonderful School community supported the ongoing vision of providing our students with outstanding educational facilities. The Jamie and Rebecca Gray Theatre completed in 2022, and the completion of St Catherine’s Sports Centre in 2023 have elevated our School’s educational offerings now and well into the future.

This redevelopment was only possible through the support of our generous community of donors. Our students now have a Sports Centre completely transformed. Doubling as an assembly venue with a clever lighting system suitable for a variety of purposes, our girls now have a space where athletic excellence is enhanced.

In addition to the refurbishment of the Dorothy Pizzey Centre, the upper gallery of the Hall is now a state-of-the-art Strength and Conditioning Studio, where our athletes can pursue their sporting ambitions without having to travel to use other first-class facilities.

The potential and importance of this redevelopment project cannot

be overstated. Over many years, generations of St Catherine’s girls have enjoyed the best of our educational opportunities through the power of giving by our wonderful community. The work done over the last two years has been of enormous benefit to the current generation of students and promises to do so for decades to come.

Our School’s next ambitious project is the development of a new Music School in 2025. The Music School will provide advanced resources for our

The Gift of Giving

As we reflect on the past year, the spirit of generosity has shone brightly at St Catherine’s School, thanks to the incredible support of our donors. In 2023, our community came together to achieve remarkable milestones through the Sports Centre Fundraising Campaign and ‘Save Your Seat’ Giving Day initiatives.

The Sports Centre Project stands as a testament to the power of collective giving. Through the

dedication and generosity of our donors, we successfully transformed an existing facility into a state-of-the-art sports hub and a stage for major School events. Behind this fundraising achievement are the generous individuals and families who believe in our charter and the transformative power of education. All contributions have made a tangible difference for our students and the broader St Catherine’s community.

Looking ahead, we remain committed to building on this momentum and continuing to provide exceptional educational opportunities for our students.

We are thrilled to be working on the development of the new Music School, our next transformational project. Our new home for Music – with architecturally designed spaces, supported by leading technology, will provide an inspirational environment for students to reach their full

students and form a critical part of the broader enhancement of our campus, including the transformation of the Wintergarden and the revitalisation of the learning spaces within the Frank Osborn Centre.

The impact of the building projects completed in 2022 and 2023, in combination with the new Music School will be transformational for St Catherine’s School and for our students. The magnitude of this legacy will be felt by students and families for generations to come.

Projects such as this, are not just bricks and mortar, but about the dreams, hopes and vision we have as a School for young women.

This Impact of Giving Report acknowledges the significant philanthropic contributions made by those who share our love of St Catherine’s and our intention to ensure St Catherine’s remains a leader in girls education.

Mr Robert Marshall Interim Principal

potential and carry with them a passion for music throughout their lives. To complement the new Music School, necessary renovations will transform the Wintergarden, enhance learning spaces within the Frank Osborn Centre, and significantly enrich the educational environment and aesthetic appeal of St Catherine’s School with a revitalised Heyington Place streetscape. We hope you will consider making Music Matter at St Catherine’s.

As we express our gratitude to our donors from 2023, we also invite new supporters to join us in shaping the future of St Catherine’s School. Thank you to all who have contributed to our success. Your generosity is truly making a difference and enriching the lives of our students every day.

Catherine’s School Foundation

The Ashley Siswanto Tumbling Studio: A Gift of Movement and Joy

On Wednesday 9 August, we had the pleasure of hosting the formal opening of St Catherine’s Sports Centre. Close to 300 distinguished guests attended the occasion, including all those who generously supported the Sports Centre as donors and Foundation Members.

The Foundation received a substantial gift facilitating the completion of the ‘Ashley Siswanto Tumbling Studio.’ This essential space will serve as a vibrant hub for the growth and development

of our Early Learning and Junior School students. We are excited to present this final segment of the Sports Centre to our students and wider community.

The completion of the Sports Centre owes a debt of gratitude to the unwavering commitment of generous donors. Without their exceptional dedication, the redevelopment of this incredible new learning space would not have been possible.

Save Your Seat

ALEXANDRA THOMS (’18) LEGACY SEAT

One of the most inspiring fundraising achievements of 2023 was the ‘Save Your Seat’ Giving Day, which surpassed all expectations by raising over $450,000 for the Sports Centre Project. This day of giving not only highlighted the deep commitment of our supporters but also demonstrated the profound impact of small actions when multiplied by a caring community. The nurturing sense of our community was present during Giving Day with a seat named in honour for Miss Alexandra Thoms (’18), who sadly passed away in 2023. This thoughtful legacy was gifted by a close friend of the family, wanting to acknowledge Alex’s time at St Catherine’s.

Principal, Ms Michelle Carroll hosted a commemorative afternoon tea where the seat was unveiled for family and friends. Alex’s classmates’ families named the two remaining unnamed seats, wanting their legacy gifts to sit alongside hers, reflecting the deep friendships formed during their school years.

St Catherine’s Scholarship Fund

St Catherine’s School’s Scholarship Fund profoundly impacts students’ lives through life-changing educational opportunities. The ongoing commitment of our loyal donors ensures we can continue supporting these students. Thank you for helping to make a meaningful difference.

The Melbourne Foundation Scholarships

The Melbourne Foundation Scholarship is a shining example of how philanthropy can transform lives and build a stronger, more inclusive community at St Catherine’s School. Together, we are empowering future leaders and creating lasting change.

By supporting the Melbourne Foundation Scholarship, donors open doors to exceptional educational experiences for deserving students who might not otherwise have the means to attend St Catherine’s. These scholarships not only change the lives of the recipients but also enrich our School community with their diverse talents, perspectives, and aspirations.

The Melbourne Scholarship also serves as an inspiration for building new donor syndicates. It highlights the potential of collaborative giving, where likeminded individuals and organisations pool their resources to create a more significant and sustainable impact.

With three Melbourne Foundation Scholarship recipients graduating in the Class of 2023, we aim to continue raising funds, to provide scholarship assistance for future students. If you wish to become an annual scholarship syndicate supporter please contact Advancement Manager, Ms Kathy Hines.

MELBOURNE FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT

MISS TAHLIA GUZZARDI (’23)

Graduating in 2023, Tahlia achieved an exemplary ATAR of above 99, placing her in the top 1% of the State. Along with her outstanding academic results, Tahlia contributed wholeheartedly to life at St Catherine’s as Editor-in-Chief of the student newspaper Stentorian, Duke of

“Having the support of a Melbourne Foundation Scholarship changed my life for the better. Through St Catherine’s focus on creating a supportive and balanced educational environment, I pursued a variety of academic and cocurricular opportunities, including languages, arts, sports, intriguing elective subjects, leadership roles and transformative experiences such as boarding, international exchange, and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Program.

The School community has always been supportive of me and encouraged me to try new things.

The Melbourne Foundation itself has also been a pillar of inspiration. This family of caring and ambitious people has been a constant source of advice, ideas and celebration of the progress and achievements

Edinburgh Captain, and Beaulieu Blair House Photographer. Such breadth of service saw Tahlia receive the Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award, House Colours and Community Service Colours, a Gold Award for Exceptional Service to the School as well as a Dark Blue Award for Academic Excellence.

of everyone in The Melbourne Foundation community. It was this combination of my sponsors, my mentor, the wider network of The Melbourne Foundation and my St Catherine’s community that allowed me to broaden my horizons for future careers, leading me to where I currently am, in my first year of studying Medicine at Monash University.

I hope in the future, to work as a clinician-scientist, with scope to contribute to science and healthcare communication projects or medical education. Overall, the support of the St Cath’s community and The Melbourne Foundation has contributed to the person I am today, inspiring me to likewise use my skills to help others reach their full potential, regardless of their circumstances.

St Catherine’s Circle

Bequest Society

Planned giving ensures sustained support for future generations, helping consolidate what previous benefactors have provided for St Catherine’s students, now and tomorrow. St Catherine’s Circle is a distinguished group of individuals who have generously included our School in their estate plans to ensure a lasting impact.

In 2023, we warmly welcomed Mrs Rosie Garrisson (Waite ’78) as a new member of St Catherine’s Circle. Rosie’s commitment to our School’s legacy exemplifies the spirit of philanthropy that has shaped St Catherine’s over the years.

As we celebrate Rosie’s membership, we invite others to consider joining St Catherine’s Circle. Your planned gift will ensure St Catherine’s continues to thrive and inspire future generations of students to achieve their full potential.

St Catherine’s Circle Member Story

MRS ROSIE GARRISSON (WAITE ’78)

A sound private education was paramount in our family – my father taught at Melbourne Grammar School and my mother was a trail blazer for women in business, which she attributes to a good private school background.

At St Catherine’s felt special and could participate in anything. Music was my passion, connection with others and serving on committees which is still evident today.

Through my roles on SCOGA, School Council as SCOGA Rep, Year Rep. for my 1978 Year and past parent, I have continued to evolve and I’m thankful for all these invaluable experiences.

My daughter Samantha Garrisson (’09) also enjoyed all the benefits of attending

St Catherine’s. Now, it’s my turn to give back, because without this wonderful all-round education and continued connection, I wouldn’t be in this great space today.

Let’s all consider leaving something in our Wills to this amazing school – no amount is too small. Think of our lifelong friendships, or the ability to have a career, and all the incredible opportunities we endured, now allow the next generation and beyond to feel the same privileges.

Our School is currently at the top of the tree but it needs our branch network of assistance to continue to thrive!

At a recent lunch, Foundation President, Mrs Gina Israel (Shackell ’76), proudly presented a St Catherine’s Circle Bequest Pin to Miss Norma Long (’64), honouring Norma’s commitment and legacy to our School.

Norma, who was a boarder at St Catherine’s from 1963 to 1965, attended the Boarders’ and 1964 Reunion Celebration Weekend held in February of this year, reconnecting with old friends and reminiscing about her time at School.
