• Staff Professional Development has been a cornerstone of achieving substantial progress in all Strategic Intents. Collectively, staff have attended over 4,200 hours of Professional development in 2016, which is accounted for in 1,700 different activities. • The top five Professional Development areas mirror St Catherine’s Schools Strategic Intent, namely literacy and numeracy, student wellbeing, technology in learning and teaching, deeper learning and the use of data. • The Staff Learning with Technologies Conference focussed upon the use of Augmented Reality in the classroom. • The Year 3 STEM Program introduced students to coding, electronics and wearable technology. • Over 40% of Unit 3&4 subject areas (Study Designs) were revised and reviewed throughout 2016. St Catherine’s remains 100% compliant with Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority and Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority criteria. • The Literacy Sub–Committee has been supported with a commitment from Faculties to review and further understand how each class can be a literacy focussed space. This has seen the development of closer ties between the Senior and Junior Schools, with a literacy extension program currently being written for Year 6 implementation. • Every Year 3, Year 7 and Year 8 student has undertaken Coding classes in 2016, using a self–paced Coding skills program to further enhance their STEM.
STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT • 12% of Year 9 students were involved in the international education program, Future Problem Solving – that develops students futuristic thinking skills. • Rui Shu (Maria) Wu, Stephanie Ferrali and Isabelle Gough accepted a place on the Monash Scholars Academic Program for 2017–18. • The School also has a recipient of the Kwong Lee Dow Scholarship for 2017, Demi Markakis. The scholarship is an academic enrichment program to support high achieving students.

Mrs Weereratne also presented to teachers the changes to Studio Arts at a number of forums including Monash Gallery and the NGV.
• Mr Adrian Puckering, Director of Curriculum Innovation and Development and Mr Alex Borlenghi, Head of Digital Learning and Practice, were both jointly named in the Top 40 Most Influential Educators in Australia for their ground–breaking work in Augmented Reality. • Mrs Jenny Mathers adjudicated Boroondara and Mildura choral eisteddfods. • Saxophone tutor Mr Dean Hilson’s band, Melbourne Ska Orchestra won the award for Best World Music Album. • Mr Saska Ayris (Tutor of Composition, Guitar and Percussion) is an internationally known composer (under pseudonym Tiasu) of movie/television and gaming music. • Head of Science, Ms Vanessa Jackson-Mc Rae invited to join the education committee of RACI (Royal Australian Chemical Institute). Presenter at the fourth Annual Chemistry Dinner and Post Exam Review. • Mrs Pauline van der Poel continued her role as Vice President of the Yarra Careers Network. • Mr Fiachra Barry commenced a Ph. D in Education. • Ms Fiona Ganino-Day - Graduate Diploma in Psychology (Monash University) and textbook author of the new Units 3&4 Oxford Psychology textbook

• Year 9 Heyington to Highlands: The new trip at Year 9 has direct links to the Year 9 English curriculum, the first Faculty to develop direct curriculum links with a unit on culture, identity and self taught in the lead up to the annual trip. • Writers Club: In 2016 a Writers Club was introduced to further develop our budding writers. With 20 members and growing, 2017 will see the program expand with links to the Write on Wednesdays in the Junior School. • Technology: Introduced a new online grammar curriculum called Literacy Planet at Years 7 to 9 English and English as an Additional Language. It allows students to work through grammar and comprehension to suit their own pace and learning and is specifically linked to NAPLAN preparation. • Year 8 English Excursion: As part of the Year 8 English study of the radio play Flowers for Algernon, students participated in a script writing session, where they recorded their own radio plays and learnt about vocal delivery, editing sound effects and advanced mixing at the Arts Centre. • Academic Honours English: In 2016, the St Catherine’s Academic Honours Program was extended for the full year. Students have been involved in Melbourne Writers Festival Competition, Write a Book in a Day Competition and Stonnington Library Writing Competition which has seen further enhancements in the students’ English skills. • VCE Senior Years Curriculum: Consistent review and rewriting of courses to prepare for the full implementation of the revised courses at Year 12 English. EAL and Literature in 2017. New units of study have been added into Years 9 and 10 English to link to the changes at VCE level.
STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT • ANZAC Centenary School Poetry Competition 2016: Flynn O’Brien in Year 9 won the Years 7 to 10 category. Charlotte Weir in Year 8 was Runner Up. This is the second year that a St Catherine’s student has won the Years 7 to 10 category in this competition.

• Humanities offered 20 elective and VCE subjects covering all disciplines – History, Geography, Economics, Global Politics, Accounting, Business Management and Philosophy. • Humanities Week was launched in August 2016. Involving quizzes and games that tested students’ Humanities knowledge. The VCE Business Management Units 1 & 2 classes also created a Market Day. • Year 7 History explored the St Catherine’s archives as part of the School’s 120 anniversary and held their own Ancient Greek Olympics. Students studying a Geography elective in Years 9 and 10 also took part in a formal week–long UN Security Council Debate regarding the Syrian Refugee Crisis. • Six new excursions and incursions were organised in 2016 including the Unit 1 & 2 Geography class who participated in an overnight trip along the Great Ocean Road studying tourism. The Year 9 students visited the Shrine as part of First World War studies and the Year 8 students enjoyed a Medieval Day.
STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT • Students studying business–related subjects enjoyed much success in 2016. Three Year 10 students were finalists in the Victoria University I Plan a Business competition. Furthermore, Samara Gill entered the CPA Plan Your Own Enterprise Competition ranking in the top ten individual entries. • Distinctions in the Australian Geography Competition were received by Year 11 student Eve Alexiadis and Year 9 student Gabriella Tymms.

• French pen–pal program for Year 11 students with a school in Serbia. The letter exchange provided students with an authentic experience and a purpose for writing in French. • Extension reading material has been developed by the French language assistants to provide extra authentic teaching and learning material to students. Students can now borrow French magazines and complete related activities. • Cross–curricular initiative between the Languages and Science Faculties saw all Year 7 students visit the Melbourne Zoo and complete activities relevant to the Science and French curriculum. • French Study Tour included visits to the 16th Century Loire Valley castles, the Normandy Second World War landing beaches and an immersion in the region of Provence. • China Study Tour provided students with the opportunity to spend time at Nanjing University where they attended targeted Chinese classes and cultural workshops, as well as exploring Beijing and Shanghai. • Japanese students attended bookbinding and manga sessions, took part in a folk story workshop and enjoyed eating Japanese food. • Launch of the 2016 Club Français de Barbreck and Les Lucioles French language groups, providing students from Years 2 to 6 with an opportunity to try more advanced French vocabulary and grammar in a fun and positive environment. • Participation in the Assessment of Language Competency (ALC) test by Educational Research group ACER. Seven students from Years 4 to 6 prepared and participated in the online assessment, receiving either a Distinction or High Distinction across three different Certificate Levels.

• The Honours Program at Years 5 to 9 continued to stimulate our future mathematicians through discussion and problem solving, opening an awareness of the breadth and beauty of the subject. • VCE Mathematics course notes revised by Faculty to cover the revised Mathematics courses which were introduced to both Years 11 and 12. • The Mathematics Support Program helps students gain more confidence when they are working through Mathematics. The individualised learning allows students to clarify their understanding of the subject.
STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT • Year 11 student Zeyi (Zoe) Yu was one of 18 students across Victoria to be presented with an Outstanding Award in the highly prestigious University of Melbourne School of Mathematics and Statistics School Mathematics Competition. • Gabriella Tymms awarded a High Distinction in the Gauss Series of the Enrichment Stage of the Mathematics Challenge for Young Australians. • Four Year 7 students along with two Year 11 students were awarded High Distinctions in the Australian Mathematics Competition. In addition, another 21 students earned Distinctions across Years 7, 8, 11 and 12. (Years 9 and 10 students did not sit the test as they were unavailable.) • 10 students across Years 7 to 12 were awarded Distinctions in the Computational and Algorithmic Thinking Competition.

• Increased numbers in Health related subjects including: Year 7 Building Relationships, Puberty, Sunsmart Message, Nutrition: Healthy Choices. Year 8 Cyberbullying/social media, Risk taking, Body Image. Year 9 Risk taking behaviours, Relationships – rights and responsibilities, Sexuality. Year 10 Global Health – Australia/ the World, Mental Health, Women’s Health, Road Safety. • Number of students electing to pursue further studies in Health continues to grow. • Year 10 students involved in a self–defence unit focusing on increasing awareness and identifying and reducing potential risks. Simple techniques to protect themselves were explored, with all students completing a theoretical and practical assessment. • Year 9 students completed a recognised First Aid: CPR and management of the unconscious patient, asthma management, anaphylaxis training and management of bleeding training. • Year 9 Aquatics: Student led approach to lessons with peers which has increased active participation in the water from past years. 85–90% of students now swimming. • Through skill development embedded in the Physical Education curriculum students are equipped with the skills and confidence to enjoy participation in the plethora of GSV Sports and activities • Clinics in Physical Education classes from outside providers such as Cricket Victoria, which enhance student learning and provide links to community sport. • For those girls with an interest in health–related issues, further studies were offered in Years 9 and 10 in the elective program, where Global Health can be undertaken. At Years 11 and 12 VCE Health and Human Development is offered, with many students choosing to continue their learning in this area.

• All Years 4 to 5 students successfully completed the CSIRO CREST (Creativity in Science and Technology) Program. • Science Honours Program was introduced to Years 7 and 8. • Year 8 students successfully completed the St Catherine’s Pilot PECE (Propagation, Education, Conservation and Exploration) Program in conjunction with the Victorian Orchid Society and assisted by university academics. • Year 7 students successfully completed the St Catherine’s Science and Sustainability through Plants Program (SSSP). This year students established the St Catherine’s Rose Garden which will allow students to propagate the rose and investigate optimum conditions for plant growth. • Selected Year 10 students participated in the Epworth Surgery Workshop involving participation in a variety of hands–on activities including basic suturing, operating a laparoscope as part of a mock operation, anaesthetising a mock patient, attempting intubation, the principles of infection control and how to prepare for a sterile environment in an operating room. • Year 10 students enjoyed working with Dr Loren Bruns, Astrophysicist, the University of Melbourne. Dr Bruns shared the findings of his PhD research project involving computer modelling of the galaxies. • Year 10 students completed the ‘Assessing the credibility of scientific evidence’ project with Professor Paul Wood FTSE, Adjunct Professor, Monash University, 2013 ATSE Clunies Ross Award Winner. • Year 11 students launch Science Club. • Selected Year 10 students compete in the Science and Engineering Challenge. • Eight Year 11 students participate in the Science Students @ Work Program working with Kids Foundation to design a transition booklet for burns survivors. • Seven Year 10 students attend NASA Space Camp in the United States of America.
STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT • Three Year 11 students, Amber Chapman, Alexandra Cullen and Alexandra Garrett, selected for the National Youth Science Forum, the first year that three students have been selected. • All VCE Chemistry students and interested Year 10 students participated in the Royal Australian Chemical Institute’s Australian National Chemistry Quiz. Year 10 student Demi Markakis received a Distinction; Ruyan (Lily) Li and Zeyi (Zoe) Yu received a High Distinction; Alexandra Garrett, Cluny Gilmour, Lydia He and Man In (Rachel) Ung received a Distinction; and Year 12 Katherine Duong, Yunjia (Kitty) Hong and Katherine Yuan received a Distinction placing them in the top 10% to 25% of the state. • Year 11 student Lily Li achieved a High Distinction in the Chemistry Science Olympiad receiving a Bronze Medal. • Year 11 student Jessica Walsh won the University of Tasmania Scico Trip.

• Sweet Charity – Senior Musical (Years 9 to 12) St Catherine’s and St Kevin’s College. • Over one–third of St Catherine’s girls in Years 9 to 12 involved across the various areas of production: acting, playing in the band, design, painting, direction, backstage crew, sound and lighting team. A huge effort led by the VCE Theatre Studies production team and dedicated staff. • 120 ‘EPIC’ Gala Concert - Returned to the world class Melbourne Recital Centre to a full audience. - 146 Senior students and 85 Years 4 to 6 musicians on stage. Wonderful to have Junior students involved and to see what they can look forward to in the Senior School Music Program. - 165 additional Senior students and almost all staff from ELC to Senior School in the audience. • Hating Alison Ashley – Years 7 and 8 Play. • Drama Club students devised set, costume and properties designs. • Many students involved in technical and backstage teams. • House Arts performance in the final week of Term 4. Inclusive, creative, collaborative and student led. • Year 3 Stage Skills and Year 4 Perform co–curricular Drama programs continue to grow from strength to strength, fostering collaboration and creativity in our junior School students.

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT • All three VCE Music Performance students have had a stellar year of performance – all playing solo repertoire at the Gala Concert – Greta Chen and Stephanie Hird also played at the Years 9 to 12 Awards Night with great acclaim. • Eighth grade Australian Music Examinations Board (Highest grade before diploma) achieved by three students. • Many other students have achieved personal bests with their examinations. • Year 8 student Margaret Handolias has composed a piece for the concert band which will be premiered in 2017. • VCE Student Greta Chen selected to play Top Class.

• The study of Media has seen a new approach to teaching this subject and it is pleasing that Units 1 to 4, to be offered in 2017 builds on the skills taught at Years 9/10 and offers students another area of study in VCE Visual Arts. • 120 ELC to Year 12 Art Exhibition was a highlight for the students, showcasing the excellent curriculum being delivered at all Year levels. • Worked closely with Old Girls to deliver informative perspectives on careers in the arts. Miss Marina Carroll opened the Art Exhibition with an excellent speech about her work and how she achieved these goals. • Year 10 Art students visited an exhibition by Old Girl Georgina Seccull (’04) as part of their research into sculpture. • The creation of the 120 mural Vibrant Possibilities by Old Girl Rowena Martinich (’97) and husband Geoffrey Carran saw students engaged with the working practice of artists to beautify public spaces. • Art and Design Clubs have given students the opportunity to work with different Year groups to create collaborative art projects. • The Art Studios have an open door policy and students have the opportunity to use the spaces during lunchtime, spare lessons and before and after School.
STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT • Two students have applied for the ANU Art Scholarship, a program run during January of 2017 for Year 11 students undertaking a Visual Arts subject. • Year 11 student Mietta Charlwood has been shortlisted for Seasons of Excellence, VCD Top Designs • Harriett Renn (‘15) had her paintings hung at NGV as part of Top Arts, she also featured in an article for The Age with Mrs Brigid Weereratne where both were asked to discuss the success of students in this prestigious exhibition.

• Overall Participation rates: 36% of students across the School were involved in DAV Debating in 2016. • A Grade won 80% of their debates (both teams came third overall in the Hawthorn Region). • B Grade won 57% of their debates (Team 2 came third overall in the Hawthorn Region). • C Grade won 27% of their debates. • D Grade won 50% of their debates. • Senior Participation rates: 18.1% of students in Years 9 to 12 took part in DAV Senior Debating. • Successes: 49% of Senior students were awarded Best Speaker in the DAV Senior Debating competition. • Junior Participation rates: 17.9% of students in Years 7 to 8 took part in DAV Junior Debating. • Successes: 26.9% of Junior students were awarded Best Speaker in the DAV Junior Debating competition. • Three of our Year 7 students were ranked Top Scoring Best Speakers amongst 16 in the Toorak Region. • 10.6% of students across the School took part in eight external Public Speaking Competitions. • Students in Design Club were given the opportunity to design all posters for Senior and Junior Debating as well as Public Speaking which were promoted throughout the School.

STATE AND NATIONAL REPRESENTATION • One of only three of the 24 Girls Sports Victoria (GSV) Schools to qualify for Division 1 in Swimming, Diving, Athletics and Cross Country. • St Catherine’s Snowsports team won the Victorian and Australian Interschool Championships, for the third year in a row winning both the Victorian Interschool and Australian Interschool Primary and Secondary categories. • Year 7 Mayuri Muralidharan – U13 State Champion in Fencing, won 28 medals in 2016, ranked No.1 in Australia for the Women’s Under 15 Foil. • Year 8 Claire Freeman – Represented Victoria in the National Hockey Championships. • Year 8 Romilly Walker selected for the School Sport Victorian State Swimming Team. • Year 8 Thalia Barbayannis played Nationals in Water Polo. • Year 10 Stephanie Ferrali – selected to represent GSV in Soccer. • Year 11 Georgia Deacon – selected to represent GSV Soccer and Tennis. • Year 12 Stephanie Hird – selected to represent GSV Tennis.

ATHLETICS • Won GSV Preliminary Athletics Carnival population trophy • St Catherine’s Cross Country Team won the Preliminary Cross Country Carnival for the first time since 2005

WELLBEING • Partnership with Swinburne University has enabled the first phase of the Emotional Intelligence program to be delivered across Years 4 and 8. • Swinburne Emotional Intelligence Program is in progress in Year 8 and plans are underway to incorporate the Year 1 Program, the Year 5 Booster and the Year 12 EI Leadership Program, and continuation of the Year 4 delivery of the Swinburne EI ‘Building Blocks’ Program. • Year 9 Heyington to Highlands trip has enabled an effective understanding of the UN Sustainable Development Goals through the promotion of literacy in local Fijian Schools and through the collection and donation of library books.

• Teaching Resilience at Home – Parent Seminar delivered by Mr Hugh van Cuylenburg, founding Director of The Resilience Project, on practical strategies to develop resilience in children and adolescents. • Girls Talk Parent Seminars – Semester 1 - ‘Adolescent Relationships and Sexuality’ Guest presenter – Justine Kiely-Scott from Sex Education Australia • Semester 2- ‘Raising Girls in a Digital World’ informed parents of the safe and responsible use of digital technologies and ideas about measures that could be taken at home. • St Catherine’s was invited to profile the wethrive:Wellbeing@StCatherines program initiatives at the 2016 Positive Schools Conference. • Inaugural School Spirit and Wellbeing Captain to lead the ‘A Team’ - a Student Club that fosters connections between age groups and Year levels. • Students seminars delivered on Relationships, Cyber Bullying, Growth Mindset, Nutrition, Alcohol Education, Study Seminars and Leadership. • Keys Please (Year 10) and Fit to Drive (Year 12) sessions to establish and encourage safe driving habits. • Significant dates and events have been marked and celebrated, including International Women’s Day, Harmony Day, Are you Ok? Day, Chinese New Year, Jindiworabak week. • Peer Support activities have included the 4 Year Olds and Year 4 buddies, the Year 7 and 11 Mates and the Year 6 and Year 12 lunch. • Leadership opportunities have included Years 6 and 12 Leaders, Year 12 Executive and Captains, Year 11 Mentors and Global Young Leaders, Years 9 and 10 Leadership Diploma and Year 8 Council. • Motivational Speakers have included Drew Ginn ‘Leadership’, Belinda Jackson ‘The Power of Sleep’. • Participation strategies to embed a Child Safe Culture have been devised to implement Student Education, Empowerment and Participation to align with the St Catherine’s Child Safety Policy.

Throughout 2016, St Catherine’s students delivered a range of programs and initiatives that encouraged a culture of philanthropy, an understanding of social justice and a commitment to community service.
• Interview Skills Workshop assisting Year 12 students to prepare for tertiary interviews.
• All Year 9 students participated in an experience day at RMIT in preparation for careers guidance in Year 10.
• Delivery of the Careers Lunch Series involving School alumnae speaking to interested current students about their tertiary journey thus far and offering career advice.
• Ongoing and reciprocal relationships with exchange sister schools across the world to establish opportunities for gap placements for St Catherine’s students.
• Careers Breakfast – Parents, Old Girls and community members host tables of Years 11 and 12 students to share stories regarding their career pathways and insights into their work.
• Participation in information sessions relating to studying in the UK and the USA.

John Macrae Elderly Citizen Centre saw students volunteering to perform, sing, play music, recite poetry and entertain elderly citizens during their lunchtimes.
• Another successful Year 11 Workplace Experience Program. Involving all Year 11 students the Program provided students contact with extraordinary mentors across a diverse range of industries. • St Catherine’s continued to host the Admissions Testing Service for a number of UK tests for entry into a range of courses throughout the UK. • All students from Years 7 to 12 have an eportfolio to compile a comprehensive digital platform showcasing their academic, co-curricular and community service achievements, as well as personal goals. Year 12s were also introduced to the option of transferring this information into a LinkedIn account. • Year 10 students have individual subject interviews to aid in VCE subject selections.

• Homework Happenings introduced to all students in Years 3 to 6. This initiative provided many students with the opportunity to complete weekly homework tasks in a focused learning environment. • Les Lucioles French Club introduced for students in Years 3 to 6. This initiative provided an opportunity for students to extend their language skills through conversational practice. • Our Year 3 students enjoyed the introduction of STEM with a specialised STEM teacher. Students were introduced to computer coding, robotics and creating a variety of projects. • STEM in the Mornings introduced before School each day and has provided opportunities for students to extend their understanding of robotics, coding, Mathematics, Science and Technology. • Pop–Up Programs were a popular lunchtime initiative. Barbreck students were invited to join in a variety of themed activities; ranging from mindful colouring to public speaking. • All students in Years 4 to 6 designed and carried out open ended Science and Technology investigations and successfully completed the CSIRO CREST (Creativity in Science and Technology) Program. • Weekly Chess sessions offered to students in Years 5 to 8. Sessions provided opportunities to practise the skills of focusing, visualising and planning ahead, whilst working with girls at different Year levels. • All Junior School students participated in the biennial Arts Week held in the final week of Term 3. Students were provided with opportunities to experience African drumming under an artist–in–residence, as well as a variety of engaging art and French activities. • The Year 3 Stage Skills and Year 4 Performance Program continued to provide students with an opportunity to develop their acting skills and their love of performing.

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT • Ten Year 6 students competed in the Australian Mathematics Competition. Three awarded a Distinction and one a High Distinction. • Five Year 6 students were awarded Distinctions in the International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) competition for English. • Three Year 6 students awarded Distinctions in the International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) competition for Mathematics. • 25 students qualified to participate in the Mathematical Olympiad, with Beibei Zhang (Year 6) and Angela Yu (Year 6) placing in the top 10% of Victoria and Madeleine Farrer (Year 6) placing in the top 20%. • Four Year 6 students awarded Distinctions in the Mathematics Challenge for Young Australians (MCYA). • Eight students named as finalists in the Berthe Mouchette French Poetry Competition receiving full marks. • Seven students from Years 4 to 6 completed the Assessment of Languages Competence test (ALC). Six students achieved a Distinction for their efforts. • Three Year 6 students two Year 5 students represented St Catherine’s School in a Victorian InterSchool Championship Tournament at Bialik College. Paula Chen (Year 6) won the trophy for the highest scoring girl in the tournament. • St Catherine’s Junior team placed second in the District Swimming Carnival. Madeleine Hooker (Year 6) progressed to the State Final in Freestyle. The 11 Years Relay Team progressed to the State Final and finished second overall. • St Catherine’s Junior team placed third in the Armadale District Athletics. • St Catherine’s Junior Team placed third in the District Cross Country. Two students progressed to the Divisional competition. • Junior School Cross Country and Alpine Skiing Champions at the Victorian Interschools Cross Country Championships in the Overall Primary Girls Section. • Junior School Snowsports Team won both the Victorian and the Australian Interschools Snowsports Championships (Nationals) in the Overall Primary Division. • Congratulations must go to all the individual medallists at the Victorian and Australian Interschool Snowsports Championships, in particular Catherine Chen (Year 6) who was victorious in Division 4 Moguls. • St Catherine’s School Primary Gymnastics team of 65 girls placed second in the 2016 Victorian Primary InterSchool Gymnastics competition. • Year 6 students Kiarna Jholl (Hurdles) and Adelaide Mitchell (Shot Put) qualified for the Regional Athletics. Louisa Burney (Year 4) qualified in Shot Put and High Jump. • Emma Froomes and Clarence Houle–O’Connor (Year 6) were selected to represent St Catherine’s at the Armadale District Tennis Competition. • Jeneath Wong (Year 6) continues to dominate golf at Primary School level. In 2016, Jeneath was made captain of the Victorian Primary Schools Team, plays pennant for Huntingdale and scored her first hole in one.
