Life Changing Opportunities for Life Changing Opportunity for Rural and Regional Girls Rural and Regional Girls “Jessica dared to dream of an education beyond our local schools and, through your generosity, this dream was made a reality. Jessica leaves St Catherine’s confident, steady, compassionate, giving and steadfast in her belief that you should not be afraid to reach for the stars.”
A Second Home for Indigenous Girls “My scholarship at St Catherine’s is the best thing that has happened to me. I enjoy making new friends, the teachers are nice and helpful and I love the Boarding House.” Selina Pigram (Year 8) pictured right
Peta and Russell Cose, parents of Jessica (’15) who attended
Audio Inspiration and Discovery “I love audio books – they are easy to listen to and there is a great range to choose from.” Mayuri Muralidharan (Year 7) “I am looking forward to audio books because they are so easy to transport and I find books very interesting when it is being read to me.” Stella Wilson (Year 7)
St Catherine’s as a boarding student from Wangaratta
Rural and regional girls attending our Boarding House in their Senior years learn independence, resilience, life skills and are well positioned to attend and adjust to residential life at university. There is a strong track record for our rural boarding students achieving a particularly significant improvement in their mathematics skills and, ultimately, achieving outstanding VCE results.
The Indigenous Scholarship Program provides not just an education, but a wealth of experiences and opportunities for Indigenous girls.
This year’s Library Fund will enable the purchase of an audio book lending platform for the School, complementing our considerable range of printed books and materials. The audio books will be part of an online lending system providing digital resources for students to use across a variety of devices. The collection will be available in both our Junior and Senior School.
Girls are encouraged to immerse themselves in the range of activities and co-curricular programs offered at St Catherine’s, as well as their own recreational pursuits from music to arts or sport.
The program has a significant impact on all our students. It provides Indigenous girls from across Australia with a supportive and encouraging environment, empowering them to set and achieve their own goals, including university or vocational training, establishing a business, or volunteering for social work in their own community. It provides other students with an opportunity to understand and respect Indigenous culture and issues.
Mrs Sue Collister, Director of Boarding believes, “Our scholarships can really make a difference to a young girl’s future with a range of opportunities which may not be offered in small rural or regional communities.”
For Year 12 Dean and Indigenous Student Coordinator, Mrs Gina Peele, “the Program has been incredibly rewarding and provides the girls with the opportunities to thrive, be happy and enjoy their time here as their second home.”
Head of Education Resources and Information Centre, Ms Kathryn White explains, “the great benefit of audio books is they offer a different reading experience, and enable us to support our English and reading programs across the School.”
Innovative Learning Environments “It is something you have never seen before. It was a fun way of learning. The images look real in front of you.” Lara Thorn “I liked the 3D aspect and working with a passenger to answer the questions. I would like to do more.” Georgia Stoupas “It was very, very cool. Things just popped out at you and off the screen.” Eloise Rudge
St Catherine’s has always been proud of its forward thinking approach to educating women of the future. The focus of the 2016 Building Fund is the creation of Australia’s first interactive and immersive Technology and Engineering Laboratory. Virtual reality and maker-space learning enables students to embark upon experiences that would otherwise be impossible. The potential of such a lab is certainly not limited to content, rather students will experience new dimensions of peerto-peer engagement, new insights leading to deeper learning connections and, importantly, expanding their skills and knowledge in order to make informed 21st Century career choices.
