This edition of Harpstrings is a celebration of God’s many blessings on St. Cecilia Academy. We are still reveling in the gift of the new Fine Arts Center and the beautifully renovated chorus and drama rooms, some photos of which are included in this issue.

have an unshakable confidence and joy that nothing can take away. With this foundation, they can then become builders of a culture that proclaims the truth about the human person as one destined to share in God’s own divine life.

The mosaic of St. Cecilia in the Fine Arts Gallery has been particularly in my thoughts in light of our school theme this year:“Only one thing is necessary” (Luke 10:42). You’ll remember that Jesus says these words to Martha when He’s visiting her family home in Bethany. Hard-working Martha is irritated with her sister Mary, and she asks Jesus to tell Mary to help her. But Jesus simply says, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and anxious about many things. Only one thing is necessary….”

This beautiful mission of St. Cecilia Academy continues to guide all our planning for both the present and future. In our school strategic planning cycle (usually a 5-6 year cycle), we are again in the midst of an updated strategic plan that will guide us in our continued growth in excellence in all aspects of the school. To this end, we have contracted with the Institute for School and Parish Development (ISPD), a national Catholic development consulting firm, to facilitate this planning process. It is a comprehensive, 10-month process that began in August and will culminate in May. ISPD’s approach is rooted in The National Standards and Benchmarks for Excellent Catholic Elementary and Secondary Schools, which provide the gold standard for best practices in Catholic education today.

Though Jesus doesn’t say specifically what the one necessary thing is, I think our beautiful new mosaic of St. Cecilia shows us what this one thing is. There she stands—a beautiful, young, talented girl whose gaze is fixed upward toward the heavens. What has so completely captured her attention is the beauty of the truth, the beauty of divine music sung by Truth Himself. Even as she walks the path to her martyrdom, Cecilia has confidence, freedom, and joy that spring from doing this one necessary thing—listening to the voice of Jesus telling her who she is: “You are the beloved of My Father.You are beautiful.You are worthy. You are chosen. You are redeemed. You are infinitely loved with the capacity to love infinitely. You have an eternal destiny.” This, I think, is why she is the patron saint of music— not because she herself mastered the organ or harp or flute—but because she so attuned her entire self to hear the divine music of God that her very life then became a song, drawing others to the beauty of truth as well. This is at the heart of our mission at St. Cecilia Academy: to help young women be rooted in the truth of who they are, so that like St. Cecilia, they will

lbert Einstein once mused, â&#x20AC;&#x153;He who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe is as good as dead; his eyes are closed.â&#x20AC;? If his insight is correct, the Math and Science Departments at St. Cecilia Academy are very much alive. Mr. Charles Martinez, Science Department Chair, and Sister Nicholas Marie, Math Department Chair, spend their days marveling at the wonders revealed in math and science and teach their students to do the same.

Mr. Martinez said that since childhood he has always loved school. His first teaching opportunity came in elementary school when he taught English to a fellow classmate from Bosnia. Later, as a student at the University of Arizona, he was awarded a teaching fellowship sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF) that aimed at helping public high school teachers improve their working knowledge of basic science. For 15 hours a week, he taught biology and earth science to teachers in an underserved public high school in South Tucson, AZ while also working nearly fulltime in a research laboratory as he finished his degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology. When he came to Vanderbilt as a graduate student, he continued to find ways to teach even as he became more involved in scientific research. Ultimately, however, Mr. Martinez had to make a choice. Although he loved the scholarship of research, he was drawn more to the interpersonal nature of teaching. Now in his 7th year at St. Cecilia, last spring, Mr. Martinez was voted by his fellow colleagues as SCA's Outstanding Teacher of the Year, an award his students heartily confirm.They will tell you he is both demanding and encouraging. He keeps his lessons engaging by helping students discover real-world applications and extensions to the curriculum content, whether it is listening to reports from the World Health Organization or analyzing a story in National Geographic. “I love teaching science because it is easy for me to make it real for the students,” says Mr. Martinez.“As a science teacher, I believe that an environment of inquiry between the students and teacher builds a strong community of scientifically literate thinkers. Inquiry is vital for helping students learn to think like scientists. Performing hands-on experiments, rather than merely memorizing scientific facts that can be easily referenced, is essential if students are to accept responsibility for their own understanding.” Mr. Martinez also models for students how a careful scientist can be a man of faith. Mr. Martinez refers to himself as a “reverted Catholic” who returned to his faith through his involvement with University Catholic

Campus Ministry at Vanderbilt.That is where he met his wife, Dr. Erin Martinez, also a scientist. They are now parents to three children, all of whom attend Overbrook School. Mr. Martinez is known throughout the school for his love of the liturgy, coordinating his ties and lapel pins with the Church’s liturgical feasts and seasons.

When parents ask him about the education their daughter will receive at St. Cecilia, he answers, “First I like to remind them is that their daughter will be known and loved as a child of God. Second, I don’t sugarcoat anything about the challenges that come

with a college preparatory experience. Yes, we have a demanding curriculum, but we also have expert faculty who care to know their daughters and see to it that they succeed in their formation.” SISTER NICHOLAS MARIE, OP

A native of Warsaw, Poland, Sister Nicholas Marie has loved math ever since she was a little girl. After attending a high school in Warsaw that focused on computer science, mathematics, and physics, she was keen to continue her studies at university. When her family moved to Washington, D.C. after her freshman year of college, she went on to earn a B.S. in Mathematics at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, then was accepted to the University of Illinois for her M.A. and Ph.D. While at the University of Illinois, she rediscovered her Catholic faith through one of the most vibrant Newman Centers in the country. “I fell in love with math and God in graduate school,” she laughs. For her, the study of mathematics, if done well, contributes not just to technological preparation, but more importantly, to the full formation of the human person. Sister Nicholas Marie thinks that math is crucial to a liberal arts education because it lays a three-fold foundation. First, it allows students to realize that there is objective truth, independent of any religious or cultural persuasion.“Numbers are not Catholic,” she says. Secondly, she says that math’s objective nature gives a person confidence that they can know and discover the truth, which is what they were made to do. The discovery of that truth brings with it joy, which is always in ample supply in Sr. Nicholas Marie’s classroom, where she loves to show students the relationships between numbers and number patterns.“The amazing thing is that math helps us to see the truth of a thing, even if we cannot imagine it.” Finally, she delights in how math develops in students a sensitivity to the beauty of order— the order of numbers, but then by extension a greater order within the universe. “Math is open to infinity,” Sister Nicholas Marie reflects. “In pre-calculus and calculus, we naturally get into discussions about God as we describe infinity mathematically.”

When asked why not everyone gets as excited about math as she does, Sister Nicholas Marie is matter-of-fact: “Mathematical thinking is both inductive and deductive, both intuitive and analytical. Math is boring when you only teach the deductive, when you do not bring in the natural engine of beauty and intuitiveness behind the numbers.The philosopher Jacques Maritain says math is the science most perfectly suited for the human mind. It starts in what is tangible but does not end there.” For most of her teaching career, Sister Nicholas Marie has been at St. Cecilia, teaching almost

every math class, although AP Calculus is her specialty. After being in a discipline where she was often the only woman in upper-level math courses, she loves the all-girl environment of SCA because of the freedom the girls demonstrate “to be who they are.” She loves how they get excited about learning and demonstrate a true sensitivity and openness to one another and to their teachers.“We have a great math department,” says Sister Nicholas Marie,“where the teachers have the girls’ true good at heart. We are forming them to be free individuals seeking truth.” ◊

For artist Mary Borgen, creating the mosaic of St. Cecilia for the new fine arts gallery was indeed a work of love. “Art for me is something that I have always just had to do,” she says. “It is a large part of who I am. I have always clung to the fact that art is a verb of being, which helps me understand that God created me with a love and drive to create art.” Mary’s initial background was in art history at Tulane University. She pursued further training in painting at Parsons School of Design, but it has only been in the last 15 years that she forayed into mosaics, captivated by their colors and textures.

When the Dominican Sisters at St. Cecilia approached her about doing a mosaic of St. Cecilia to grace the new fine arts gallery hall, she was thrilled. She had worked with the sisters on another large mosaic for the Bethany Retreat House and admits, “From the minute I stepped on the Dominican Campus, I fell in love with it. I thought, ‘I want to make a mosaic for St. Cecilia,’ but I didn’t say it because I didn’t want to be pushy.” Once Mary set to work, she often worked 16 hour days to assure the piece would be finished for the dedication of the new building. Her husband Scott custom-designed the wood frame, after which Mary sketched out the figure and the graphic elements of the mosaic before selecting the glass and cutting each piece by hand to fit in the image. At the end of the process, she removed all the grout and glue and sanded the entire surface to achieve a high polish where the true colors re-emerge.The finished mosaic stands over

Although the Raphael St. Cecilia features a Renaissance ideal, Mary wanted her St. Cecilia to have a more contemporary face and be someone the students could relate to. “I wanted them to look at her and think,‘I can be a saint, too,’” says Mary. “During the artistic process, I prayed that, added to the hundreds of people she converted in her lifetime, and no doubt thousands of people throughout the ages, St. Cecilia would continue to pray in a special way for every single SCA girl who walked past or glanced at her image at school.” When asked how beauty manifests the reality of God, Mary responds unhesitatingly, “Beauty and faith are inextricably connected in my mind, since I find God first and foremost in every part of nature. One of my favorite Scripture verses is Romans 1:20, ‘...Ever since the creation of the world, his invisible attributes of eternal power and divinity have been able to be understood and perceived in what he has made.’ God has given us such

SHOES

a story WITH

here is a line from Gerard Manley Hopkins’ famous poem "God's Grandeur" that reads, “Generations have trod, have trod, have trod.” These words prove most apt in describing a beat-up pair of saddle oxford shoes that have been worn by no less than 15 first cousins who all attended St. Cecilia Academy. As the shoes have been passed down from girl to girl, so have the memories and the family bonds of friendship.

For many years, St. Cecilia seniors have received the special privilege of wearing the traditional black-and-white saddle oxfords. While the rest of the students wear Sperrys or Wallabees, seniors are easily identifiable because they sport special shoes worn by no one else, and they love to proclaim this privilege by lacing their shoes with elaborate ribbons that often change with the seasons. This tradition has become so prized that the cousins of the Derrick and Simpson families have passed down the same pair of saddle oxfords for close to 25 years. Not only have the five Simpson girl siblings worn these shoes, but so have many of their cousins, all of whom attended SCA. Christine Simpson Wessa, ’05 relates how the

tradition first got started. Her cousin, Laura Diroff ‘98, first owned the saddle oxfords and wore them when she was a senior at SCA. She then passed them onto her other two sisters and her Moore cousins so that they would not have to buy new shoes. Once the shoes made their way to the Simpson family, what had begun as a practical consideration now became a source of family humor. “We would joke that you would be cursed if you didn’t wear them,” laughs Christine. Since Christine’s graduation, ten more girls have worn those same shoes, including current senior Adrianne Glover ’20. Margaret Derrick Simpson ‘79 reports,“Over the years the shoes have been repaired twice, but polished and re-laced with new ribbons several times.” The Simpson sisters all agree that taking care

of the shoes and making sure they did not get lost fostered their personal growth in responsibility. When asked whether all of these 15 girls had the same shoe size, the Simpsons responded emphatically, “No!” That is why the backs of the shoes were often smashed down or the stitching ripped. But these soles tell a deeper tale than simply that of daily wear. For the Simpson family, this simple family tradition of literally walking a mile in another person’s shoes has connected them more closely both to one another and to their alma mater. They said that wearing the same saddle oxfords gave them a sense of being strongly united with their cousins in shared experiences at a school they love, even if they were years

apart. They had many of the same teachers: Mrs. Schultheiss, Mr. Horn, Madame Begley, Dr. Collins.They all experienced Spirit Week, St. Cecilia Day, Junior Ring Mass, and other SCA traditions. Christine recalls how, at her sister Helen’s graduation in 2018, all her siblings and many of her aunts and cousins stood and joined together in singing the alma mater “We Love You, St. Cecilia.” Since all the Simpson sisters were in choir while students at St. Cecilia, it was also easy for them to sing the Cantantibus (the traditional hymn for the feast of St. Cecilia that is performed on St. Cecilia Day) in multi-part harmony at the wedding of their cousin, Katherine Ray Goodman ’11. The Simpson women have many wonderful memories of lessons they learned through their St. Cecilia Academy experience. Bridget ’12 mentions the example of the faculty and staff living out their vocations. She said she had teachers she could really look up to, and she will never forget those moments where she glimpsed some of them kneeling in prayer in the chapel. Helen ’18 agrees that her relationships with her teachers had a positive impact on her life because she knew they really respected and cared about her. Now that she

is in youth ministry, she wants to model that same respect and care for her students. Clare Simpson Marchetti ’09 still remembers how two different sisters gave her great practical advice when she was experiencing the ups and downs of adolescence. Now a mother of three children of her own, she says, “I want to be able to speak to my own children the way those sisters spoke to me.” Rose ’17, who is currently pursuing a degree in musical theater, appreciates the solid foundation in philosophy and theology she received at St. Cecilia, a foundation that keeps her grounded in what is lasting and true. Christine says that the friendships she experienced during her four years at St. Cecilia were pivotal. She had the freedom to be herself and receive the love of true friends in an atmosphere free of worry or pressure.This healthy experience of women helping women has motivated her to start her own ministry to other women called His Own. Their mom, Margaret, who has raised 5 boys and 5 girls, chimed in that her experience of being in so many activities while at St. Cecilia was a great testing ground for her future vocation. “It prepared me to juggle a lot. I learned not to panic under pressure.” ◊

Changing the world one meal at a time BY D E A N N A K E N DA L L , S C A H I STO RY T E AC H E R

St. Cecilia Academy’s relationship with Mary’s Meals began six years ago in 2013. While teaching the Senior Religion seminar, Sister Amelia, O.P., current SCA Vice Principal of Academics, discovered Mary’s Meals and sensed an organization with a mission that closely aligned with that of St. Cecilia. Mary’s Meals was founded by Scotsman Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow in the late 1990s with a simple goal: to make sure that the world’s neediest children receive a hot nutritious meal daily in their place of learning. This straightforward mission yields incredibly high returns. By offering children a meal at school, Mary’s Meals hopes to break the cycle of poverty by working at three levels: 1) children who wouldn’t otherwise receive an education now have the extra incentive of a meal to get them to school; 2) communities that work with Mary’s Meals make a commitment to volunteer and prepare the meals, thereby actively supporting their children’s education; and 3) Mary’s Meals works with local farmers and food providers to help grow local economic infrastructure. In the true spirit of Catholic social teaching, Mary’s Meals promotes solidarity and subsidiarity to ensure long-term sustainable change in some of the world’s poorest and remotest communities.

Over the last six years, SCA students have raised over $10,000 for Mary’s Meals, which means they have helped 500 children around the world. As the lead SCA Mary’s Meals sponsor, I have had the great pleasure of working with creative, committed students who plan, organize, and execute our Mary’s Meals events. Thanks to their hard work, Mary’s Meals USA invited St. Cecilia Academy to become part of its Mary’s Meals USA Ambassador

St. Cecilia currently awards tuition assistance from 34 endowed scholarships that have been established by families and friends to provide tuition assistance to students. An endowed scholarship is truly the gift that keeps on giving for generations to come. hen Beverly Deal Ammarell was preparing to celebrate her 50th St. Cecilia Academy reunion, little did she know what was in store for her. For two years prior to this milestone, her three children—Robert, Tyler, and Liz ’07—had been hatching a plot in secret.They had been talking about wanting to do something special for their mother, something of value to honor her that, as son Robert says,“could also pay it forward.”They knew about other endowed scholarships and together decided to set up a scholarship to honor their mother. For several years they planned and quietly pooled together their hard-earned money while Robert was in touch with the St. Cecilia development office to work out the details of the gift. The Ammarell children then schemed with the school that this new endowed scholarship would be unveiled at the 2019 Alumnae Luncheon.When the children stood up with their mother to explain their plan, Bev said, “I was overwhelmed and surprised when my loving children announced the scholarship in my honor on the occasion of my 50th SCA reunion.” Robert said that, as wonderful as memorial gifts are, he and his brother and sister felt strongly about honoring their mother during her lifetime. He said, “We could do this because we thought about it ahead of time.You just do what you can with your circumstances.” Now The Beverly Deal Ammarell (’69) Scholarship is formally listed among St. Cecilia’s 34 endowed scholarships. Starting this year, the

As a long-time civil engineer for Metro Nashville, Beverly has always valued education and has made the time to give back to her children’s schools, particularly through volunteering. Peggy Lampley Robeson ’60 never thought about naming St. Cecilia in her estate plans until last year. “I thought only millionaires give to endowments,” she quips. But it was during a casual meeting last year at the development office that she realized planned giving was something she could do as well, and so she notified the school that she had named St. Cecilia Academy in her will.“St. Cecilia Academy is the single most influential experience of my life,” says Peggy, explaining that at SCA she received a superior education and lifelong friends. She also acknowledges the long-standing positive influence of the Dominican Sisters, laughing, “There is no doubt that they are educators because they gave me a first- class education in spite of myself.” Peggy has stayed connected with her alma mater over the years, serving on the Alumnae Board and volunteering at just about every alumnae event. She is proud of how much St. Cecilia has grown and marvels at the expansion of the school’s facilities and offerings for the students over the years. Through her choice of a planned gift, Peggy wants to ensure that St. Cecilia continues to have the same positive impact on future generations of young women that it had on her. By naming SCA in her will, she automatically becomes a member of The Dominican Campus Heritage Club, which was established to honor friends who leave one of the campus schools in their will or estate plans. Saint Virginia is a stationery company founded by Leslie Wallace Congdon (1998) to help support the complex needs of her daughter,Virginia, who was diagnosed with Aicardi Syndrome, an extremely rare neurological disorder. Virginia still has daily seizures, is blind, doesn't walk or talk, and relies on her family to meet all of her needs. All cards are hand-stamped and packaged, with love, in Nashville, TN by Leslie. Proceeds from sales and donations directly support handicapped renovations and equipment needed to support Virginia. Leslie also works as a nurse at St. Thomas West Hospital, and her husband Emil is owner and creator behind local leather and furniture company, Emil Erwin.
