Principal’s Message Dear Parents/Guardians,

On Friday 4 August the College community celebrated the feast day of St Clare of Assisi, our College’s patroness. This is a very important occasion in the life of the College and one we mark by participating in the liturgy of the Eucharist as a whole school community followed by a series of celebratory activities. It was a beautiful and most fitting prayerful gathering that reminded us of the legacy of St Clare and the inspiration she provides for us on a daily basis. Clare of Assisi lived from around 1193-1253. Her name means “the enlightened one.” She was a woman who was born into a noble family but chose to live a very different way of life. She was an educated woman who chose a simple life of poverty and prayer, a life devoted to God. She sought from two Popes their approval to confirm the Privilege of Poverty on her religious community. This approval was given just two days before she died. She took no vacations, made no pilgrimages and allowed herself no diversions from the single purpose of her life. Through her chosen life she grew in wisdom and grace.

Clare was a strong-minded woman whose youthful spirit never left her. She shared the ideals espoused by Francis of Assisi and he assisted her to establish a religious community unlike any other female religious movement up to that time. The women had no property, they lived a less cloistered life than other female religious and they worked collaboratively with the Friars led by Francis of Assisi.

The St Clare’s College motto is “Seek Wisdom.” Our hope is that while at St Clare’s each girl does grow in wisdom and grace. The day concluded with the annual “St Clare’s Talent Quest” performance which was supported by all students and staff. Best Wishes Brad Cooney Principal

St Clare’s Day St Clare’s Day was held this year on Friday 4 August, despite the weather we still celebrated in style. We began the day with a Eucharistic celebration to give thanks for all of the gifts that we enjoy as the St Clare's College community. The student body and staff helped to make the Mass a beautiful experience, from the Music Ministry to the readers and altar servers. The celebration was officiated by Monsignor John Woods, our school chaplain. Monsignor John challenged us to open up to God's grace by saying "yes" to God like St Clare did. Not many of us, he commented, would be called to enter convent life as she did; but all of us are asked to be open to relationship with God in our daily lives. We are grateful to all who assisted, and particularly to Marie Manning who’s organisation, prayerful consideration and attention to detail was, as usual, outstanding. After Mass the party theme “Lights, Camera, Action” came alive. All students and staff had given great thought in planning their costumes, many princesses, producers, Gold Logie Winners, the Sesame Street

Gang and lots more were out on display. The stalls on the day had great variety and there was great fun had by all. The day ended with the traditional St Clare’s Talent Quest. This year we were lucky to have guest presenters all the way from America, from Barden University an all-girl a cappella group, called “The Barden Bellas.” The performances on the day were exceptional, showcasing the great talent we have here at the College, from drums to Jazz to the beautiful voices of many of our students. The winners of the talent quest included the singing sensation Georgia Kennedy from Year 8 taking out first place; second place was a tie to Adriana Stramandinoli and Sam Grebert from Year 10 and third place went to the tap group consisting of Alyse Canton Year 8, Mia Canton and Madison Chan both in Year 7.

Year 8 Reflection Day On Wednesday 16 August all Year 8 students participated in a Reflection Day. Our theme this year was Building Resilience. The day was filled with many different activities which gave our students the opportunity to reflect on their journey so far this year and to appreciate their own unique qualities and those of their classmates. The day also provided an opportunity for students to work with their Pastoral Leaders and a number of Year 11 and 12 students on building resilience through a number of skill based activities. We also had the pleasure of listening to Angie Lu, College Captain 2015 speak on the value of friendship, the need to appreciate and be grateful for others and how important it is to work as a team. Charity Day

To Support HOME Queanbeyan On Wednesday 9 August Japara and Wareen held their charity day to raise money for HOME in Queanbeyan. HOME provides a supportive, loving home for people with chronic mental illness: a place where people who are incapable of living independently can live with the dignity and the love they deserve; a place where residents are encouraged to live active and fulfilling lives within their community. During the day the girls reflected on what home means to them and learnt about some of the residents currently living at HOME and how HOME is supporting them.

Science Week National Science Week is an annual celebration of Science in Australia, an opportunity to join together to enjoy and explore the wonders and benefits of science.

It’s been running for over 20 years. This year Science Week ran from 12-20 August and the theme was the future Earth. Year 7 and 8 students were treated to a performance about the future Earth called the Global Gamble by the award winning company, Perform Educational. Global Gamble combined high energy sketch comedy with improvisation to entertain and educate the girls through a fun and interactive experience. The program focused on key science based messages: encouraging sustainable consumption, energy efficiency and

conservation. The core focus was on Global Sustainability Science. Ice cream, made using liquid nitrogen, was a lunchtime highlight as was the screening of the “War on Waste” aided by the College’s Sustainability Captain, Christina Hummer. Meanwhile the Science club kept quietly working on their Engineering Games projects. On Thursday, Year 10 students accompanied by Mrs Cupitt, Mr Holmes, Ms Worontschak, Ms Flanagan and Mrs Reid, entertained 120 students in Kindergarten through to Year 4 at St. Benedict’s Primary school for a Science Extravaganza during Science Week. Liquid nitrogen ice cream was made again, and students participated in a variety of hands-on activities. This experience enriched the students from St. Benedict’s, and the Year 10 students had a rewarding time.

Over seven weeks, finishing in Science Week, Year 7 students completed a Science Fair investigation to solve a question, of their own, using the scientific method. To celebrate the students’ work a display has been set up in the College Hall with Canberra MP Gai Brodtmann viewing the work today.

On Monday 21 August from 5pm-6.30pm parents and friends are invited to St Clare’s first ever Science Fair. Students could take this further and enter their projects into the ACT Science Fair. Seven Year 12 chemistry students accompanied Mrs Taylor to Maribyrnong Primary School to judge their Science Fair entries. Janet Worontschak Science Coordinator

Girls in STEM Breakfast

with Dr Katie Mack, Astrophysicist On 27 July the Year 11 and Year 12 Physics students went to the ANU for the Girls in STEM Breakfast. There was no better way for the students to consider a career in STEM than by experiencing the passion and achievements of a personable, approachable and engaging practitioner who just happens to be a world-class researcher and communicator. Throughout her career as a researcher at Caltech, Princeton, Cambridge, and now Melbourne University, Dr Katie Mack has studied dark matter, black holes, cosmic strings, and the formation of the first galaxies in the Universe. Dr Mack gave the audience a brief outline, with stunning photographic evidence, of the history of the universe, our very humble place in it, and where our current knowledge runs into the “great unknown” of the Big Questions cosmologists are trying to fathom, like the nature of Dark Matter and the even darker Dark Energy! Dr Mack has the enviable talent of being able to take such advanced theoretical concepts and make them tangible, deepening the listener’s appreciation of STEM’s power at making sense of The World. A range of questions from the audience was dealt with in an equally engaging way, making us aware of the enormous breadth of Katie Mack’s knowledge and of the modesty with which she carries her international reputation.

As a bonus, the 60 or so College students present were able to meet and talk with a number of female ANU Physics undergraduate and PhD students to learn of their journey into physical science studies. Robert Pegalo Science Teacher

Screenagers During week 6 of this term, St Clare’s College will be hosting a screening of the award-winning documentary, ‘Screenagers.’ This screening is suitable for the whole family. In this documentary physician and filmmaker Delaney Ruston explores the struggles families experience regarding social media, video games, academics and internet addiction. Through insights from authors, psychologists and brain scientists, ‘Screenagers’ reveals how tech time impacts a child’s development and offers solutions on how adults can empower their children to best navigate the digital world and find balance. Debating

In Week 5, students participated in their first debate for Semester 2.

Kinky Boots

The Year 7 team as part of the Fictional Worlds competition, debated the topic: “Instead of asking to go to the ball, Cinderella should have asked her fairy godmother for independence from her family.” The Year 9/10 teams as part of the Junior Premier competition, debated the topic: “That we should allow dual citizens to run for Federal Parliament.” All teams debated extremely well, and won their debates. It is important to acknowledge the hard work of both our coaches, Katelyn Tsipiras and Caitlyn Baljak, (ex-St Clare’s students). They contribute so much to the development of each student, helping us every Friday at training and supporting us at our debates. Training is where we receive coaching about different debating styles, and have an all round great time. All in all debating is an amazing, worthwhile experience, in which many enthusiastic girls participate. Cristina Munoz and Megan White Debating Captains

Some students may have thought it was a form of torture, needing to wake early on the morning of the 2 August, to be ready for an early departure but once the Year 11 & 12 Drama, Dance and Music students and their teachers hit the road, the excitement began to build. Attending professional performances is crucial for Performing Arts students and senior students are fortunate to have several opportunities to do this. Watching or listening to artists at the "top of their game" is exciting and inspiring. After the matinée performance of Kinky Boots our students were filled with wonder, awe and admiration for the actors, dancers and musicians who realised a life affirming and energetic show. Students later described the production as one of the best shows they had seen and they were already thinking about how they could experiment or apply knowledge gained to their next performance tasks. All enjoyed taking photos outside and inside the theatre, and we were also fortunate to meet some of the cast after the show. The students represented St Clare's beautifully. Visit from Sr Genny Ryan Sister Genny Ryan OSU spoke to Senior Religious Studies students last week about her work for the Australian Catholic Religious Against the Trafficking of Humans (ACRATH). Sr Genny’s focus was on having a heart for justice and, in particular, how everybody can work to help abolish slave labour in the cotton industry by making purchasing decisions that support just practices all along the supply chain. Pope Francis has said that, “purchasing is always a moral, not simply an economic act,” and this message was affirmed by Sr Genny who provided the students with practical strategies for not only making ethical and sustainable consumer choices but also for being agents of positive change. Hospitality News Year 12 Hospitality students were privileged to have guest speaker, Hany Ezzart from Ona Coffee, to speak to the students about ethical sourcing of coffee, café culture and employment in the Hospitality industry. Hany was awarded first place in the 2017 ACT Aeropress Coffee championship. He demonstrated his award winning latte art ‘swan’ and we had fun trying to replicate it. Students obtained a strong understanding of texturing milk and preparing espresso coffee with correct extraction as a result of Hany’s demonstration. Monique Nutt Hospitality Teacher

Scone Recipe

Method 1. Combine flour, baking powder and sugar 2. Rub butter through flour with hands until it looks like breadcrumbs. 3. Make a hole in the middle of the bowl with your fingers then put the lemonade in. Mix with fork and add milk and until everything is combined.

3 cups of self raising flour 2T baking powder 60g Butter 1T sugar 1 C lemonade 1 C milk

4. Tip out onto a floured bench, knead mixture but do not handle too long. 5. Flatten to one inch then cut into mixture with circles with a greased tray put all of the trays in the oven at exactly 180oC (fan-forced 160oC) for 20-30 minutes or until golden on top. 6. Lay a towel down and put all of the scones on the towel cover them up and let them cool.

McCormick Recipe Challenge Unfold the Flavour

The Year 9 and 10 Flavour Forecast 2017 Recipe Challenge was designed by McCormick Foods Australia and The Home Economics Institute Inc. for Food Technology students in Australian schools. The challenge is for students, individually or in teams, to develop three original recipes to support McCormick Flavor Forecast 2017. On Tuesday 25 July the Year 10 International Cuisine students presented their first recipe “Rise and Shine Global Tastes”, which consisted of a bowl breakfast that reflected a breakfast cuisine from either an African country, a Far Eastern country

or a Middle Eastern country. The set ingredients included an ancient grain, a plant based milk and a skhug sauce, a popular Middle Eastern condiment which brings spice to the table in a hot sauce form. The girls created technically advanced, tasty and visually appealing dishes. The kitchen was a buzz of creativity and the students loved tasting their original creations. We were blown away by the level of originality and innovative tastes in the responses from the class. Marj Collins Food Technology Teacher

Blueprint Exhibition

Year 12 Fashion and Textiles student Lucie Twyford has been selected to present her work at the ANU Blueprint Exhibition which opens on Monday 14 October. There will be a closing celebration at 6pm on Wednesday 23 October at the ANU School of Art and Design Gallery at which point $5000 worth of prizes will be awarded. There are four main categories in the exhibition which are Innovation and Execution; Digital and Material; Sustainability and Ethics, and Engagement and Impact. Lucie has had three outfits selected for the exhibition which she has completed throughout her study of Fashion and Textiles in Year 11 and 12. In this time she has explored sustainability through use of recycled materials and bringing new life to old garments and technology through wearable electronics. Lucie explored concepts of digital technologies and their relevance in fashion to produce a battery powered LED light circuit in formal wear. City 2 Surf Weekend

On Friday 11 August, ten students from Years 10 and 12, accompanied by Ms Chen and Mr McGrath, boarded a bus to head to the bright lights of Sydney for the City 2 Surf.

The girls were excited to be part of the world’s biggest fun run, get out of the cold weather and see what the harbour city has to offer. After a quick dinner at Sutton Forest, we arrived at the YHA Central. This was our base for the two nights. The girls were up early Saturday morning to have breakfast and get ready for the day. Our first stop was the City Fit Expo at the International Convention Centre in Darling Harbour. The Expo had a number of stalls, games and activities to help get you pumped up for the big run the next day. After getting as much free samples as possible, we then headed into Darling Harbour to start carb loading for our race. After lunch, we were back to the YHA to get ready to cheer on the mighty Swans at the SCG. There were also 40,000 other people there to cheer on the Swans so it made parking a bit

difficult. Once inside we witnessed the Swannies put on a great show, beating Fremantle by over 100 points. Ms Chen was very impressed as she got to watch her favourite player, Buddy Franklin, in person. After the game the girls were invited to walk onto the hallowed ground of the SCG and participate in kick to kick. This saw numerous marks, great goals and big kicks from the St Clare’s students. After watching the mighty Swans, we headed to Bondi Beach to check out the finish and make a meeting point for the end of the race. This was a perfect time for pre-race preparation and a final carb fueled meal. The excitement was in the air as we had seen the finish line and were keen to get started. With our running outfits ready to go, bags packed, it was time for bed to get some sleep so we weren’t too tired for the race the next day. Another early morning wake up, followed by breakfast and a short warm up walk to Hyde Park saw us at the start line. We were part of 80,000 people who had decided to take on the 14km course.

The start gun went off and we took on the course. The different race tactics saw the girls spread out throughout the race but we all eventually made it to the end. Heart Break Hill was conquered, feet were sore and we were tired but we had made it to the finish with many of the girls impressed with how far they ran and their time. After a few (more than a few actually) victory selfies and group shots we jumped on a bus and a train back to the YHA. Lunch at Paddy’s markets was our last activity in Sydney before we all climbed back on the bus for the trip home. Parents were met by some very tired but happy girls who had a great weekend and accomplished fantastic results. Congratulations to all the girls who participated. A special thankyou to Ms Chen who came up with us and was a fantastic motivation for the girls throughout the whole weekend. It was a fantastic weekend and one that will not doubt grow next year. The panel shared their range of experiences since leaving school, answering student questions about topics including managing work/life/study balance, moving out of home for the first time, gap years and how to operate in a professional environment. It is hoped our senior students have been given plenty of food for thought with regards to the different pathways that open up after school and perhaps one of the most significant takeaway messages from the panelists was that while life doesn’t always go to plan, this can be a good thing and when it’s not a good thing, having passion and drive for what you do goes a long way towards overcoming many challenges. Class of Ambassador Melissa Hitchman Ambassador Melissa Hitchman, graduated as the Vice Captain of St Clare’s College in 1982. Ambassador Hitchman commenced in her position as Australia’s Ambassador to the Holy See on 18 July 2016 and presented credentials to His Holiness Pope Francis on 8 September 2016. Ambassador Hitchman is an experienced career officer with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. She has previously served overseas as First Secretary at the Australian High Commission in London. In Canberra, Ambassador Hitchman has served as Director, Regional and National Security Section; Director, Intelligence Review; and Director, International Commission on Nuclear Non-proliferation and Disarmament Secretariat; and most recently, Deputy Chief of Protocol. She was also an Adviser, International Division, in the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet. Ambassador Hitchman holds a Master of National Security and a Bachelor of Economics (Hons) from the Australian National University. On 30 March 2017, Ambassador Hitchman visited the College. She spoke to senior students on the theme of ‘St Clare’s to St Peter’s’. She encouraged students to have ambition, form a world view and make a difference in a field of their choice. She discussed cooperation between the Australian Embassy and the Holy See on issues such as human trafficking and modern slavery, indigenous and gender empowerment, climate change, the sustainable development goals, and freedom of belief. Ambassador Hitchman and her family look forward to rejoining the St Clare’s community on return from Rome. She extends warm wishes to students, staff and their families.

Class of Mackie Quirk

Mackie left at the end of Year 10 because of her Father’s posting overseas. Since then she has completed her high school diploma in the United States and pursued her tertiary studies at a university in North Carolina. After four years, she graduated with two degrees: a Bachelor of Arts in Communications and a Bachelor of Arts in Performing Theatre. With these degrees, she hoped to work behind and in front of the camera and she decided to dive right into the deep end and head to Los Angeles. Mackie has lived in Los Angeles for just over a year now and has loved every minute. She is an associate producer for an independent TV and film production company. Apart from her job she finds a lot of job in creating her own work, from short films, to documentaries and even wedding videos. Recently, on a short trip back to Australia she generously gave up her time to shoot footage for promotional videos for St Clare’s. Mackie wants to encourage all the girls at St Clare’s College to follow their dreams and know that anything is possible. She says; “while hard work and application will always be required to make things happen, the rewards far outweight the cost. Dream it: do it!”

Uniform Update Effective Term 1, 2018

As of Term 1, 2018 the College’s uniform requirements will change slightly. The College Blazer will be a compulsory item of clothing for all students in Year 7-12 with the College Winter Jacket (navy spray jacket) only an option for Years 7-10. The College Winter Jacket is only permitted to be worn to and from school in winter. The College blazer will be a compulsory item of clothing for the winter terms ie Terms 2 and 3, in addition to the school jumper or on its own. The Blazer may also be worn in summer over the summer dress or as part of the senior uniform. There will be times during the year when students are requested to wear their blazer if they are representing the College or attending a formal function at the College. For one week only Savvy Schoolwear are offering families a 15% discount on all College winter uniforms this includes the Blazer. We appreciate your support in ensuring that your daughter is in the correct uniform at all times.

On 8 August our Senior and Junior Hockey teams competed at the ASC Hockey Competition. Both teams braved the cold conditions and played well throughout the day. Our Junior team placed second overall. Congratulations to all the girls representing the College.

Bill Turner Cup

Unfortunately the St Clare’s soccer team is now out of the Bill Turner Cup and Trophy. The girls fought hard today but lost 4 nil in a tough game against a quality team from Maribyrnong, Melbourne.600 teams started in the competition and our team made it to the top 32. It was a great effort and a reflection of the talent in the team. Congratulations to all the girls involved and a massive thank you goes out to Mr David Garrity for coaching the team. Also a big thank you to all the parent support.

Chorale

On 11 August the Chorale competed in the Albury Wodona Eisteddfod. They were absolutely fantastic. The girls sang like angels and their performance etiquette was impeccable. The Chorale were competing against five others secondary choirs from Albury and Wodonga. From the five sections they performed in, they have come away with three first place trophies, one third and one highly commended. The Chorale also appeared on Win News in Albury. Congratulations girls!

Netball Update

Congratulations to our Year 7/8 and Year 9/10 netball teams who both are South Side champions. In the finals our Year 7/8 team defeated Calwell 23-4 and the Year 9/10 team beat Erindale 23-7.

On 15 August our Senior Netball team competed at the NSWCCC in Sydney. They played a strong defense and centre court enabling our shooters to seal the deal and finish second in opens division three.

It is important to have an open and trusting relationship with your child around the use of technology. Be sure to let your children know that they can come to you if they are ever bullied or feel unsafe online. Your child should also know that they can always tell you about a mistake they made online without fearing any repercussions. As a parent, you should also be aware of the latest trends and online risks.

INSTAGRAM

WHAT IS IT? Instagram is a platform for enhancing and sharing media. Users post photos and videos, and can comment and create tags for their images so that they can be found by searching for the tags. Users can also live stream video or share posts that disappear after 24 hours.

SNAPCHAT

WHATARE THE RISKS? Instagram does not allow pornographic, violent, unlawful or discriminatory content and tries to remove any content deemed inappropriate, but it is not 100% accurate and may miss posts or comments. Instagram accounts are pre-set as public and can be viewed by anyone, but users can change their account to private, and must approve anyone who wants to view it.

WHAT IS IT? Snapchat is a popular media sharing and messaging app that allows users to instantly share photos and videos, as well as chat, call, and video call.

WHAT ARE THE RISKS?

People believe that Snapchat is a “safe” way of sharing all sorts of photos and videos because the images disappear after they are viewed. Even though “snaps” disappear after they are viewed, it is possible for the viewer to capture a screenshot and keep a copy of the image. In addition to this, several third-party apps can be used to access and store the photos and videos from Snapchat.

As there is no moderation over content shared, Snapchat has gained notoriety for sexual content. Users often receive requests from spam accounts inviting them to share explicit content or follow links to download viruses. The “Discover” feature posts content generated by news and media websites like CNN, Daily Mail and Cosmopolitan. Much of this is inappropriate for younger users, but there are no ratings or access restrictions.
