Tidings
I find the life of Saint Clare of Assisi, whose feast we celebrated this Sunday (August 11), profoundly inspiring. Clare, named Chiara Di Offreduccio (our Chiara Centre) was a noblewoman from Assisi (our Arts area in the Assisi Wing), who emerged as a powerful leader in her own right. Her intelligence and piety marked her life, even as her family’s castle was sacked during social upheavals in Assisi. Despite her privileged background, Clare was captivated by the teachings of Saint Francis of Assisi and his call to radical poverty.
Clare’s choices were ground-breaking, especially for a woman of her time. She courageously rejected her family’s expectations so she could follow her spiritual calling. She insisted on living the Franciscan life without special treatment or concessions, rejecting the economic protections typically mandated for women by the Church, such as dowries, to fully embrace a life of penance and poverty at San Damiano, outside Assisi (our Learning Commons). After Francis’ death, Clare demonstrated remarkable strength and resolve, challenging the male leaders of the Franciscan movement to ensure that her female community retained its identity and connection to the order. Her determination to have the Church formally recognise her community, even to the point of challenging the Pope, is a testament to her vow to living a life of poverty and total commitment to God.
Through her example, Clare showed that the ideals Francis preached were attainable for everyone, regardless of gender and social status. Together, Clare and Francis introduced revolutionary concepts that continue to resonate today: a call to peace, awareness of the poor, the reality that happiness can be gained without material possessions and, resonating for our community, the power of women working together and committing to God.
Clare and Francis, both from wealthy backgrounds, chose voluntary poverty, highlighting that poverty is not a divine destiny but a condition created by societal structures. Their lives encourage us to raise our awareness of our responsibilities towards the poor and the marginalized. They remind us that true religious commitment involves more than ritual; it demands living out the Gospel in everyday actions.
On Friday 16 August, our St Clare’s community will reflect on and celebrate the life of St Clare through what will be a wonderful, prayerful celebration of Mass. We will then move into the celebration of Clare and our own St Clare’s community with student-led fundraising for our charities, through a range of wonderful activities, food stalls, raffles, show bags, with a bit of dancing (and possibly pyrotechnics!) and a showcase of school talent.
Clare and Francis’ legacy serves as a timeless lesson, urging us to envision and work towards a better world. Their simple yet profound lives continue to inspire and challenge us in the twentyfirst century, just as they did in the thirteenth.
We have a lot to be grateful for.

FRIDAY 16 AUG
Meet the Head of House
Meet the Head of House: Alinda
Name of the Head of House:
Mrs Jessica Kearnes (Acting) (Mon, Wed, Thurs, Friday)
Mr Sam Lewis (Acting) (Tues)
A bit about you:
I have recently moved here from Brisbane, yes by choice!
I teach drama and dance, and love to sing. Here’s a photo of me recently performing at a Christmas Carol event. I have 6 pet chickens, a dog, and a loving family, and have a dream to write a musical one day! One of my favourite projects has been working with Performing Arts Classes and Local Police to develop a mini web series, about a fictional missing person, seeing my students explore real social issues and transform into characters, with the added pressure of acting for screen, was phenomenal.
My Vision:
As an educator I believe a positive, inclusive, collaborative, and student-centred culture in a school transforms a learning environment into a space where students feel safe, connected, and ready to learn. As Head of House (HOH) my aim would be to develop well-rounded individuals who are confident, caring, lifelong learners ready to take their place in the world.

Captains’ Corner
Hello St Clare’s Community!
I can’t believe there is only 2 more Terms left of the 2024 school year - how exciting! St Clare’s Day is just around the corner, and I can’t wait to see all your amazing costumes! As the theme is ANIMATION, I’ve been rewatching some of my favourite animated movies in preparation for the day and in doing so there were some quotes that really resonated with me.
The only thing that matters is what you choose to be now. - Kung Fu Panda
This quote embodies the tough decisions the Year 12 students are starting to make such as choosing our future path. St Clare’s College has allowed us to focus on opportunities that will benefit our future, while making the most of our school life.
You’re braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think. - Winnie the Pooh
Christopher Robin’s quote is a reminder that we are capable of more than we think. By believing in ourselves and our abilities, we can achieve great things. During these last couple Terms at St Clare’s College, I am trying to make the most of our time left here. St Clare’s girls embody this quote during their everyday lives, and I am starting to see it more and more as we enter our last semester.
Best of luck for this upcoming term!

Welcome back to Term 3!
I cannot begin to explain the excitement that is buzzing around the school with all the incredible achievements and events that we have going on! Let’s start with a little recap of Term 2!
• We celebrated Multicultural / World Day on Tuesday 21 May by playing songs of all different cultures at bell times
• OnStage was a success on Thursday 30 May, with incredible comments from all parts of the community!
• Mamma Mia rehearsals were well underway, and the production team was getting pumped for show week!
Wow, what an incredible Term 2 we had! Now let’s look at what Term 3 will bring and has brought us already!
Firstly, a huge congratulations to the cast of Mamma Mia and all those involved in the production team, it was a huge success with sold out shows and so many amazing reviews!
This term we also have our St Clare’s Got Talent which is a part of St Clare’s Day on Friday 16 August, we cannot wait to see the talent we have amongst our beautiful school community and cannot wait to see everyone’s incredible costumes!

This Term Music Ministry is preparing for two important Masses. On Thursday 8 August Music Ministry will be singing at St Christopher’s Cathedral for a special Catholic Education Mass to celebrate the Feast day of St Mary Mackillop. Our second Mass is on Friday 16 August to celebrate St Clare’s Day.
Imogen Baggoley Music Ministry Captain
Hello STCC Superstars! Welcome to Term 3 which is shaping out to be a pretty fantastic term! We started off with a phenomenal performance of Mamma Mia which really displayed the community spirit thriving at our College.
During the month of August St Clare’s will be participating in Share the Dignity’s August Dignity Drive. As many as 500 million people across the world suffer from period povertythe lack of access to basic menstrual products and hygienic bathroom facilities to use during their menstrual cycles. Share the Dignity’s 2021 survey into period poverty in Australia found that more than 40% of the 125 000 responses said that they found it difficult to buy menstrual products because of their price.
Share the Dignity works to make a real, onthe-ground difference to the lives of people who menstruate, experiencing or are at risk of homelessness, domestic violence or poverty.
They distribute period products to those in need and work to achieve menstrual equity all across Australia. During August, house boxes will be set up outside the campfire in the SDLC for students to donate any sanitary products. The House with the most donations at the end of the month will win!
Coming up we also have St Clare’s Day where in the week leading up to, we have Community Week which will celebrate the history, talents, skills, and families of St Clare’s College members, further promoting the goals of this year’s theme. Each day there will be an activity/event that celebrates and cultivates community spirit leading up to St Clare’s Day.
I hope Term 3 is a super exciting time for everyone! God bless!

Mamma Mia!
What an unforgettable week of performances from the cast and crew of our school musical, Mamma Mia!
The musical was a true testament to the dedication, talent and heart of our incredible cast, crew and staff. After months of memorising lines, learning intricate dance routines, perfecting set designs, rehearsing and mastering the backstage magic; the vision was brought to life!
We thank our amazing teachers and staff who go above and beyond, dedicating hours of their time, care, guidance and support. And to our students; your passion and commitment continue to inspire us all. We cannot wait to see you all back on the stage, delivering many more stellar performances!

Year 10 Drama –Come Alive Museum Theatre Production
Imagine if old artefacts, such as boots, magnifying glasses, torn jackets and old hand written letters could ‘come alive’ and tell their stories!
Well that’s we’re exploring in Year 10 Drama this term. We are learning about Australia’s history via the National Library and National Portrait Gallery, to use an artefact, or portrait to create a brand new play that explores its story and perform it alongside other Canberra schools, as part of the Come Alive Theatre Festival. The idea is that students have to create a production script and performance from scratch, leaving the audience with new found knowledge of a historical object, person or event.
This week we had Peter Wilkins, the Artistic Director of the Come Alive Theatre Festival visit for a artist workshop. The students could choose from a range of artefacts and points of interest, such as the famous blue diamanté dress worn by Jessica Mauboy in the film ‘The Sapphires’ and the historical importance of entertainment in reviving troupes during the war, or a bush rangers revolver and stories of bush ranging across Canberra. Instead, our girls chose a Convict Uniform and stories from Tasmania and created a new work involving soundscapes and physical theatre that explored; convict punishment, prison conditions, hard labour, humiliation and sentencing.

Year 7 Brainstorm Productions Incursion
On 31 July Brainstorm Productions presented their student wellbeing performance ‘Wired’ for Year 7.
The show follows the journey of two students who are struggling to manage their mental health, relationships and online experiences. When their worlds collide, the audience must help them find a different path.
Wired is an interactive theatre experience that tackles some of the big issues affecting Australian students, including social isolation, anxiety, stress, depression, (cyber)bullying, online safety, school stress and pressure from social media. It addresses barriers to help-seeking and provides strategies for resilience, problem-solving, goal-setting and positive mental health.
‘Wired’ is part of our student wellbeing curriculum and has been developed by education and mental health professionals. This engaging live show uses humour, audience participation, relatable characters and real student experiences to spark conversations and facilitate further learning in the classroom.
