Edition 13 24 November 2017
Principal’s Message As the Academic year draws to an end various farewells and end of year celebrations are underway. On Friday 10 November the Year 12 Breakfast and Farewell Assembly was a memorable celebration of the achievements of the girls in this year group. The speech of the 2017 College Captain, Megan Phipps and the 2018 College Captain, Lydia Milosavljevic in addition to the class of 2017 breaking into a beautiful and spontaneous rendition of the Hymn to St Clare contributed to the wonderful atmosphere on the day. There were touches of humour as well as some tears as the girls farewelled the College that has been an important part of their lives for up to six years. Staff and students formed a guard of honour for our Year 12 students, spilling out onto the College oval to say farewell and meet with friends and family members. The final Year 12 Mass and Awards will take place on Friday 1 December at the College with the Year 12 Graduation Dinner to follow at Parliament House on Saturday 2 December. Our Year 10 students participated in the College Preparation Day on Wednesday 22 November. Students were given an opportunity to learn about goal setting, forming study groups and positive study habits in addition to information about
preparing for assessment in Years 11 and 12. The day concluded with our Year 10’s reflecting on their journey in Years 7-10 and looking forward to what lies ahead in 2018. I wish to thank Kym Darmody (Year 10 Coordinator) for her planning and facilitation of the College Preparation Day. Students in Years 11 and 12 have been sitting Semester Tests for their subjects over the past two weeks. The Year 9 and 10 students begin testing from 24 November - 30 November. We hope the girls understand that these tests are primarily designed to teach them how to approach revision and identify areas where further consolidation may be necessary. Semester Two, Academic Reports will be available on SEQTA from 15 December. I encourage parents to access the reports for their daughters and to engage in constructive conversation regarding your daughter’s progress for this year. Our Year 10 students will be able to access their Year 10 Certificate and VET qualifications (where relevant) from the College Reception on Thursday 7 December.

the last day of Term 4, Friday 8 December. Mass will be celebrated in the College Gymnasium by Father John Woods from 9.30am and the awards will take place at 11am. Refreshments will be available in between Mass and the Awards Ceremony. The ceremony will conclude at approximately 12.45pm. Students are able to leave school at this time with permission from parents/carers. I thank all the parents who have been involved in any of the numerous school activities throughout the year including supporting sport and various cultural events, being a committee member and assisting on interview panels. We are very grateful for the generosity of so many parents who have contributed in a positive way to the work of the College. We say goodbye at the end of this year to a number of staff and families who have had a long and close association with the College. We wish to extend our thanks to all of these people and wish them every success and happiness in the future. Best Wishes Brad Cooney Principal

Year 7 Reflection Day “St Clare is with us all the way lighting our path” was the theme for the Year 7 Reflection Day held on Wednesday 8 November.
The day began with a scavenger hunt and discussion on what Year 7 have learnt about the College and St Clare this year. This was followed by guest speakers providing more information on St Clare’s life. The students took time out to reflect on the qualities of St Clare and whether they have followed in her footsteps in 2017. After recess they focused on getting to know more students in their year group, determined who they are and who they would like to be as a Pastoral Care class. Through a drama performance the Youth Ministry Team highlighted the importance of sharing our gifts and talents. Our College Captains for 2018 spoke to the Year 7 students about overcoming challenges and seeking to be the best person God intended us to be. The day finished off with a liturgy and candle ceremony which focused on what gift we need to build upon, what our purpose is within the Year Group and how we can seek to emulate St Clare in our lives. Comments from the students about the day included: “The drama performance by the Youth Ministry Team was so powerful.” “From now on I want to be more proactive at St Clare’s.” “Loved working in different groups as it helped me gain some more social skills and be confident with others.” Marie Manning Acting Mission and Ministry

Japan Trip
For our Australian Winners of the Picture Happiness on Earth Competition
Four Year 8 students, Alyssa, Tayla, Olivia and Emily traveled to Tokyo as Australia's representatives to present their findings for the Picture Happiness on Earth competition. The competition was run in conjunction with the Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation (Miraikan), Questacon and Bloomberg asked students to picture what happiness on earth could look like and to support their findings with data sources from the GeoScope and Geopalette database software supplied by Miraikan and other reputable data sources. The Year 8 team decided that happiness on earth meant that all children were safe and encouraged people to become foster parents. Their data showed that there were over 40,000 reported cases of child abuse in Australia alone in a year. The team made a video with their findings and this was selected by Miraikan and Questacon as the winning entry from Australia. Students from Tokyo who were part of an all-girls programming workshop then took their findings and created a program using the Unity game engine software to be displayed

on the Tsunagari globe that hangs in the foyer of the museum. The Japanese interpretation of the work encouraged all people to be kind to each other and to look out for each other to make the world a happier place.
Japan is a beautiful country and the whole week left the team smiling and experiencing true happiness on earth!
The installations will be available from the museum website in the coming months and will be featured twice a day on the globe. Images from the rehearsal are already available www.miraikan.jst.go.jp/ sp/picture_happiness/en/
Olivia wrote of her time there:
Our four team members spent time with the students from Team Australia during rehearsals and then presented their work at the World Premier at the museum. Along the way the students were given guided tours of the museum, saw the Honda Asimo robot in action and were treated as honoured guests. Our time in Tokyo was spent in cultural immersion, cooking classes, sight seeing, eating, ordering meals using technology, shopping and a very special dinner with ex St Clare's student Sianan Scrivener who is now working for Disneyland in Tokyo.

On Tuesday 7 November four girls and two teachers departed Canberra Airport towards a great journey. We were fortunate enough to spend eight days in the lovely and cultural place of Tokyo. Whilst in Tokyo we experienced several traditional events and were even fortunate enough to see a Japanese wedding. The main point of the excursion wasn’t just about the shopping trips but it was focused on presenting our work to the students and staff at Miraikan Museum. This was a very exciting but nerve wracking experience. My favourite part of this trip was Disneyland of course. What a fun and adventurous day. I would like to thank the other girls and Mrs Major and Mrs Bourne for a great time.

VEX Robotics Regional Championships
The annual VEX Robotics Regional Championships was held in Goulburn on 18 November. Students had been preparing all year to complete the Ringmaster and In the Zone challenge with VEX IQ and VEX EDR robotics. The Junior Team took out the Judges Award for Best Teamwork and the Senior Team took home the Excellent Award which is the highest award of the competition based on game scores, design notebooks, interviews and teamwork. Special mention should be made of the SWITCH team members who traveled as part of the team to assist with marshaling, field resets, scoring and running the Tournament Manager software. The teams are off to Wangaratta on 1 December for the National Championships. Thank you to Renee Jones, Anne Plowman and Paula Taylor who assisted in transporting the two teams to Goulburn for the event. Juliette Major Curriculum Coordinator - ICT
Year 7 Meets a NAO Robot
Students from a Year 7 Digital Technologies class participated in a robotics programming workshop run by The Brainary on Friday 17 November. Students met a NAO robot and planned out a cafe ordering experience. The robot used sensors such as microphones, speakers and cameras for facial recognition to offer menu items and respond to individual orders. Students workshopped the order of commands and tested their programs with the robot to debug their steps and check the order of their algorithm. Juliette Major Curriculum Coordinator - ICT

The Seeker Program Presentation Night The Seeker Program is an inquiry-based elective offered to Years 9 and 10 culminating in the creation of a major project. Students are required to deliver a presentation to their parents, teachers and invited guests in which they explain the nature of their major project and what motivated them to pursue their particular area of interest. Presentations took place over two evenings in the Flexible Learning Centre where students outlined the research they undertook and the processes they employed to produce their final project. The range of topics was extremely varied and interesting. The projects presented included anthologies, reports, websites, documentary films and topics ranged from forensic facial reconstruction to speculative and historical fiction. The audience was impressed with the assurance, passion and fluency with which the students spoke. Their presentations were enhanced by their highly creative, engaging visual support material. It has been a pleasure to witness the accomplishments of the students and to be part of their learning journey. They have certainly set a bench mark for the students who have enrolled in The Seeker Program in 2018! Manette Johnson English Coordinator

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander News Two major events have occurred recently to celebrate the end of year. On 30 October Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and their friends enjoyed an end of year luncheon with St Edmund’s Aboriginal students. This was to celebrate the many events that we have participated in throughout the year, including the badge ceremony, National Sorry Day Bridge Walk and NAIDOC Mass. On 31 October Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and their friends participated in a ranger-led guided walk to Hanging Rock at Tidbinbilla. Our guide explained Aboriginal tucker and medicines and provided samples of food. The Hanging Rock shelter was impressive as it has provided shelter for Aboriginal people for the past 21,000 years. Our guide showed us the technology Aborigines used as he discussed weaponry, food gathering, craft and art. We spent the afternoon walking along the Sanctuary, a scenic wetlands walk with beautiful wildlife. We then enjoyed seeing koalas and their babies in the Eucalypt forest. We certainly walked a lot on the day and the girls would all agree that the day was a successful end of year excursion. I have enjoyed the myriad of activities offered this year and hope all the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and their friends will join me in similar events in 2018. Reconciliation Retreat
On Thursday 9 November the Year 10 Youth Ministry Team headed to Corpus Christi Parish Gowrie to help run a Reconciliation retreat for the Year 3 students from St Clare of Assisi, Calwell. We ran a few games, shared testimonies and discussed the story of the prodigal son and crossed linked it to the Aladdin story. It was really amazing to see students so young on fire with their faith. They were really excited and enthusiastic about the sacrament they were about to receive. The four of us really enjoyed running the retreat and we took a lot away from it and would jump at another opportunity to do it again. Youth Ministry End of Year Mass and Dinner
Students from the St Clare’s Youth Ministry Team and their parents, recently celebrated an end of year Mass and dinner. The evening started with a beautiful Mass said by Fr Tony Percy, with readings and music from members of the Youth Ministry Team and families. We then shared dinner together, before having the opportunity to hear an overview of 2017 ending with a handover to the 2018 Faith and Community Captain, Anjalie Upasena. Anjalie was presented with a framed copy of a pledge collated from several of the St Clare’s house mottos, to represent the vision and spirit of the Youth Ministry Team at our school. After we took the opportunity to thank the many people who contributed to Youth Ministry this year. Fr Tony then talked to us about 2018 – the Year of Youth, which was truly inspirational. The evening was a beautiful opportunity to celebrate the wonderful work the Youth Ministry Team achieved this year. Marie Manning Acting Mission and Ministry

Year 10 Students Win National Cook Off
Our Years 9 and 10 Food Technology class took part in the National Flavour Forecast 2017 Recipe Challenge hosted by McCormick Foods and the Home Economics Institute of Australia. Without having heard or tasted some of the ingredients, the students fearlessly designed amazing dishes to reflect the industry flavour forecast. Congratulations to Vanessa, Aileen, Amy and Elly (Year 10) for winning both the ACT/NSW State Winner and the overall National Winner. Loren, Olivia, Caterina and Teagan (Year 10) received a Highly Commended Award. Marjolein Collins Teacher
Special Guests Recipe Tasting! Year 11 Hospitality students have been working hard to prepare themselves for the arrival of six special guests to the college. The guests were invited to taste individual recipes the girls developed this semester. We invited five guests from the University of Canberra and the Training Operations Manager from Western Sydney University – Elise D’Oliveiro to taste and give constructive feedback to the class based on the suitability of the recipe. The ‘market stall’ café function went smoothly and our guests were more than impressed with the variety of dishes created. These dishes included; homemade antipasto pizza, tufu and beef stir fry, burrito cones, trendy smoothie bowls, mini burgers, savoury muffins, fritters and build your own hot dog buns. The girls should feel very proud of their efforts to interact professionally and to create these dishes which were more than suitable for our guests. Elise D’Oliveiro has taken the Hospitality classes ideas and is currently thinking about ways to incorporate the smoothie bowls onto her menus. Well done to all the students involved. Hospitality’s Hungry Guests
This semester the Year 10 Hospitality classes have been researching ways to present healthy food to ‘fussy eaters’ between the ages of 3-5 years old. They needed to find interesting ways to incorporate fruits and vegetables into seemly ‘normal’ food and present this food using easy to eat methods. There were six bay groups where each group needed to choose an appropriate recipe and present it as a group to their customers. Mrs Nutt worked hard to organise the Narrabundah Early Childhood School students to visit our school and be a part of the year 10 Hospitality Café. This gave the girls a real life scenario where they needed to meet the needs of some very cute customers. The hospitality class created some creative dishes including: vegetable meatballs with home-made pesto, vegetable mini quiches, homemade baked chicken nuggets, crumbed chicken skewers, hidden vegetable spaghetti and vegetable piklets served with natural yoghurt and strawberry jam. The Narrabundah Early Childhood School students had the opportunity to taste each of the group’s dishes and then vote for their favourite dish of the day. It was a great opportunity for the Hospitality classes to interact with people out of the school community and they did a fabulous job at communicating with their customers. All of the groups managed to ‘sell out’ of their food and it was great to see the Narrabundah Early Childhood School students walking away happy and full from their lunch. Thank you to Narrabundah Early Childhood School for taking time out of your schedule to participate in our café lunch and a big thank you to Mrs Nutt for organising the event. Amie Connor Teacher

Outdoor Education Camp
On Tuesday 24 October, Mrs Batch’s Year 10 Outdoor Education class embarked on their two day camp experience in Wee Jasper. They were able to showcase the skills they had learnt over the past 13 weeks. Weather it was abseiling down a 35 meter cliff face or squeezing themselves into tight, dark and muddy places, all the girls thoroughly enjoyed their camp experience and would encourage other students to push their limits. Molly recounted her experience: “As part of our outdoor education camp in 2017 we went camping, abseiling, caving and for a freezing five-minute swim. My favourite
14
activity was most probably the caving as I found it so much fun being able to walk freely around the caves, and go exploring. I also really did enjoy the abseiling as it challenged me to overcome my fear of going over the edge of a 30-meter rock face. This was a fear that I was unaware of until I released I have no clue how to abseil. I was super hesitant at first so when it was my turn I was freaking out so much, on the inside, but luckily the guide who was running the small abseiling wall was super helpful and told me how to abseil. After I had finished and was on the ground I found out the only scary part was when I had to drop over the edge. So, on the second day I was not as nervous when I went down, although I did swing into the ledge that we were warned about, the one just before
“Your word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path” Psalms 119:105
the drop off. Then I let go with both hands to prevent myself from face planting into the ledge which really was not so smart but it all turned out fine so it was ok. Over all camp was fantastic and as usual I over packed both with clothes and food but that really didn’t matter because we ate most of the food anyway and I had great time. I would totally recommend the trip for students next year.” Like the rest of the class, Sarah also pushed her limits, in our adventures underground: “My favourite part of our Outdoor Ed camp was the caving. I had never had an experience like this before. The people taking us were extremely encouraging and helped us all to face our fears and have fun. It was
amazing to see how well the whole group came together to support each other. It was great to test our limits in a way that hardly anyone had done before. Although we got really dirty, everyone had smiling faces, and even in the pitch dark you could see everyone’s face glowing!” Overall, the entire class had an experience of a life time, where they all pushed their limits and challenged themselves. However, the highlight of the trip was the bonds we’ve made as a class. Weather it be squeezing into the sardine can, lifting each other out of the birthing canal or c-section, or even yelling words of encouragement as they abseiled down the face of a cliff, these girls have shown incredible perseverance, courage and most of all friendship. Class of Kim Osmond (nee Yuen) Kim attended St Clare’s College in the 80’s and enjoyed her six years at the College having made some wonderful friends, whom are still friends today. During her senior years, she was a prefect and in Year 12, College Sports Captain. She intended to go to university to study to become a PE teacher; however, her journey took her in other directions. Straight out of school, she worked in customer service in the banking industry. She discovered that while she enjoyed working with people, banking was not for her. She wanted to work in an industry that dealt with people and one that also allowed her to travel. Soon after, she entered into the travel industry by joining Australian Airlines (which became Qantas in the early 90’s) travelled to parts of the world for both work and leisure. During this time, she married and had two beautiful daughters. After having children, she left her role in the airline. She worked at the Department of the Treasury in a travel coordination role, supporting the Treasurer and other portfolio ministers who travelled overseas to attend international meeting on the world stage i.e. APEC, G20. Fortunately, Australia hosted some of these large international forums in 2006, 2007 and 2014; Kim was part of the teams that delivered logistics around these events. Kim currently works for the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, in a role that supports the Prime Minister’s international travel program. She liaises with colleagues based in Australian missions abroad and coordinates the logistics and program of events for the visits. She also provides support to visiting dignitaries from other countries to Australia, when they visit Australia under the Guest of Government program. Kim is a parent representative on the St Clare’s College Board.

Class of Siân Keys
Siân Keys is a passionate science communications specialist and has developed a free program to encourage people with intellectual disabilities to enjoy and engage with science. The Senior Programs Officer with the National Youth Science Forum, Siân was inspired to create Scienceability for her brother Ehren, who has Down syndrome and also loves science. Equipped with a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science Communication Outreach from the Australian National University, Siân decided to apply for a National Science Week grant and launched Scienceability in 2017, Australia’s first science program run for and by people with intellectual disabilities. Hands-on workshops explored the science of colour, air, flight, music, building and making, liquids and fluids, and were run by trained volunteer science facilitators in the lead-up to National Science Week. This culminated in a free, open workshop where the Scienceability participants ran demonstrations and activities for the general community. Through Scienceability, Siân is challenging ideas of who can engage with science. Siân was nominated as the 2018 ACT Young Australian of the Year. Article from https://www.australianoftheyear.org.au

NOVEMBER 2017
While school holidays can be a time for families to enjoy together,
they can also place additional pressure on families to keep children entertained, healthy and safe. Police often report that cyberbullying can increase in holidays when young people don’t have much on, so encouraging healthy activities can be important in getting young people away from screens. Talk to your child about what they want to do, whether it’s a day together, staying with a friend, or community events like a holiday sports program.
PRIVATE PHOTO CALCULATOR%
WHAT IS IT? Private Photo Calculator% is a Decoy App designed for students to hide media within a calculator app. The app functions like a calculator until a passcode is entered to reveal saved photos and videos.
DECOY APPS
WHAT ARE THE RISKS? If a student has this app, it’s because they feel they have something to hide, and apps like Calculator% tend to be used to capture and share sexually explicit content. While the app claims not to be able to access users’ photos and videos or to store them on servers, it doesn’t have privacy policies clarifying where media is stored.
WHAT IS IT? "Decoy Apps”, "Vault Apps", “Ghost Apps” or “Disappearing Apps” are apps that are used to hide content on mobile phones where someone other than the owner wouldn't be able to find it.
WHAT ARE THE RISKS?
Some users have complained that after uploading their photos into the app, the passcode is changed without their permission, or the app crashes and cannot be opened, meaning that saved photos can't be retrieved or deleted. For more information around online trends and emerging threats, visit Perimeter Guardian’s blog “Insights” here.
The purpose of these kinds of apps is to capture and share photos, while keeping their storage location hidden. They look and function like something benign: a calculator or an mp3 player. However when a secret passcode is entered, a storage vault of hidden media is revealed. These apps can store and open several media types, including photos, videos, music, Microsoft Office files and even conversations and contacts. Often these files can also be shared internally with other people using the same app. Many of them also have security functions that record failed passcode attempts, and sometimes even take a photo of whoever tried to break in to the app. Some of these apps have been linked with illicit photo-sharing rings in high-schools in the United States, with entire year groups facing child pornography charges for sharing photos of their classmates.
