Get a clear view of this scenic attraction, starting at the River's Edge Convention Center where you can access the St. Cloud River Walk. Up for a hike? The River Walk follows along the Mississippi to the St. Cloud State University campus. If you're not out of breath yet, you can extend your adventure and pick up the Beaver Island Trail, which continues south along the waterfront. Picnic, swim, hike, fish, bike, or cross-country ski — Quarry Park will provide you hours of enjoyment any time of year! Plus, the observation deck offers spectacular views of the landscape. A highlight of Quarry Park is the historic Liberty Derrick. This exhibit is a tribute to Central Minnesota's early 20th century granite quarrying industry. Self-guided tours are available, and vehicle parking permits can be purchased at the entrance station or from the Stearns County Parks Department. 2023 single-day passes are $10.

Our favorite go-to hiking spot is Quarry Park! It's beautiful all year round, but we love it most in the fall. The vibrant color of the leaves reflecting in the water of the quarries is so serene and a must-see!"

Six gardens make up Clemens Gardens: Virginia Clemens Rose Garden, Rest Area Garden, Formal Garden, White Garden, Perennial Garden, and the Treillage Garden. During the summer, the six gardens draw 2,000 to 3,000 people a day from all over the world. So whether you’re a weekend gardener or professional horticulturist, visit soon and find the flavor of European gardens right here in Central Minnesota!

Situated below the Clemens Gardens and along the Mississippi River, these distinctive gardens lie under towering hemlock and pine trees. As a result, many of the garden beds are in the shade, making them astounding in their abundance of color and incredible variety of flowers. Included in the park is a large peacock cage, lovely wedding pavilion, wooden gazebo, and, of course, the fabulous Mississippi River.

HISTORY IN THE MAKING!

When it comes to making history, Greater St. Cloud has it going on!

From the ground up, this area is literally built on history. That’s right, the granite in the ground is a story in itself. Maybe you’re more of a military buff... we have the perfect place for you just a short drive down the road. Want to know even more? Check out the history museum and learn about Stearns County and what helped to make the area what it is today.

The original building was built in 1928 by the International Harvester corporation as a regional hub. It was built next to the railroad line that ran through the St. Cloud area and was used as a receiving terminal for parts, supplies, and equipment for the agriculture industry. Equipment was assembled and stored onsite in the 33,000 sq. ft. cold storage warehouse area, then showcased in the 6,000 sq. ft. showroom on the first floor. Above the showroom and part of the warehouse was a 15,500 sq. ft. area that was used for administration offices and small parts storage. The total footprint of the building is 63,560 sq. ft. and sits on approximately 4 acres of land.

If old buildings could talk this one would have quite the story to tell.

Today the building houses a brand-new craft distillery on the first floor. Iron Street Distillery distills and blends spirits in a portion of the warehouse and has a cocktail room in the old first floor showroom area. The second floor space is being remodeled into a large wedding and event center called Harvester Square that can hold over 500 people. The event center will feature the original maple wood flooring, wood roof construction, and interior brick walls.

The size, age, and soundness of the building were some of the reasons behind the plans to redevelop the property. The exterior brick, interior wood floors, and massive steel columns and beams tell the story of the building of when it was built and are a big part of St. Cloud’s history that needs to be preserved and showcased. ■ [See more on page 21.]

THE MINNESOTA QUILT SHOW

This exciting event showcases fantastic quilt exhibits created using a variety of unique styles and techniques. This show is not just for quilters, it’s for anyone who loves textile arts and appreciates colors and designs. Quilters from across the state, country, and even abroad enter their quilts for exhibition and competition. One of the special exhibits is GRAFFITI CHERRYWOOD CHALLENGE. Graffiti ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. This challenge focuses on the graphic beauty of intense colors of this urban expression. Enjoy Preview Night, Wednesday, June 14, 7-9 p.m. Vendors, quilts, meet the faculty, and music for a special admission price of $12.

How the ST. CLOUD HOSPITAL began and developed into what is known today as CentraCare

What would eventually become St. Cloud Hospital began as a succession of hospitals beginning in the late 1880s.

The first such institution was St. Benedict's Hospital, founded in 1886 by a group of Roman Catholic nuns from the Order of St. Benedict. It played a major role in aid following the Sauk Rapids cyclone and was in need of expansion by 1889. At that time the sisters accepted a gift of land southeast of the city for a larger hospital, St. Raphael's, which opened on May 30, 1890. However, the failure of the city to extend roads and bridges to the area made it virtually inaccessible, and the hospital never held more than seven patients at a time.

In 1900 a new hospital was constructed adjacent to the original building. After years of increasing patient admissions, the sisters broke ground on a new hospital north of St. Cloud in May 1926. The hospital was renamed St. Cloud Hospital and dedicated on February 9, 1928. This remains the current site of the hospital. In 1962, the sisters relinquished ownership and it became a not-for-profit corporation. In 1975, the Diocese of St. Cloud joined with the sisters to help maintain the Catholic character of the hospital. Since 1995, the hospital has operated under the guidance of the local Catholic Church of St. Cloud. Also in 1995, the corporations of St. Cloud Hospital and the St. Cloud Clinic of Internal Medicine merged to form the nonprofit CentraCare Health System. Today, it is known as CentraCare St.-Cloud Hospital. What has remained constant since the 1800s is a commitment to understanding the needs of our community and passionately serving those needs.

ABOUT THE TRAIL...

The trail consists of a 65-mile long, 10-foot wide, bituminous surfaced hike-and-bike pathway. It runs on the MN/DOT rail corridor formerly owned by Burlington Northern Railroad Company. Known for its scenic views, the trail is used by bicyclists, snowmobilers, roller-skiers, roller bladers, and walkers.
