A GREATER PLACE TO LIVE, WORK & PLAY!
history A LITTLE BACKGROUND ON THE AREA St. Cloud began as three separate settlements on the Mississippi River. One of the town sites was begun by a former slave owner involved in the fur trade, bringing slave-owning Southerners to the area. A second settlement was begun by a professional townentrepreneur who attracted Protestants opposed to slavery. The third site was intended for a sawmill which drew Catholics from Germany. In spite of the differences, the three settlements eventually merged into one city in 1856. The name “St. Cloud” was chosen to reflect the area’s long-ago French heritage, being named after a suburb of Paris, France.

A LOCAL TREASURE
Quarry Park (Stearns County Parks) County Rd. 137, Waite Park • 2-n Stearns County Courthouse 725 Courthouse Square, St. Cloud • 8-k
When granite deposits were found along area rivers and in land nearby, the granite industry began to develop. Granite was everywhere and even today, as you drive through St. Cloud and Central Minnesota, you’ll find buildings, houses, churches, monuments and public artwork made of granite of all kinds. One of the largest granite companies in the world is in nearby Cold Spring, and the Minnesota Correctional Facility was built on the site of the first granite quarry in St. Cloud. At one time the area claimed 19 granite companies, and the granite industry provided thousands of jobs throughout the mid-1800s to present day.

granite industry in the Central Lakes area, and it is a haven for those who love the outdoors. Natural features include scenic woodlands, open prairie, wetlands, and unquarried bedrock areas, with many trails winding throughout the park. Plant life includes everything from oaks and aspens to yellow ladyslippers, Indian paintbrush and prickly pear cactus. John Scott Photography
Man-made features include a fascinating Derrick Exhibit, sizeable hills composed of quarried rock remnants (grout piles) and 30 granite quarries, most of which are now filled with water and form picturesque rock-fringed ponds – which are surprisingly clear and deep. Hills afford spectacular views of the landscape and an observation deck provides a unique perspective. Vehicle parking permits can be purchased at the contact station or from the Stearns County Parks Department (320-2556172). Picnic, swim, hike, fish, bike or cross-country ski — Quarry Park will provide you hours of enjoyment any time of year!

mississippi river The Mississippi River rises in northern Minnesota near Itasca and meanders slowly southward for 2,320 miles to the Mississippi River Delta at the Gulf of Mexico. With its many tributaries, the Mississippi ranks as the fourth-longest river in the world and either borders or passes through 10 states. Native Americans lived along the river and its tributaries for hundreds of years. Most were hunter-gatherers, but some formed highly-successful agricultural societies, as the silt layers along the banks comprise one of the most fertile agricultural regions in the county. The arrival of Europeans in the 16th century changed the native way of life as first explorers, then settlers, ventured into the river basin in increasing numbers. The river, then as today, served as a vital transportation, recreation, and commerce link.

lake george
John Scott Photography
Lake George is home to “Summertime by George”, a summer concert and festival every Wednesday evening. Adjacent to Lake George is a small pond with swan house, a splash pad, public restrooms, playground area and performance pavilion. The pavilion is used for a number of different events throughout the year. The highlight being “Summertime by George”, a Wednesday night free concert and festival that runs for 12 weeks every summer and is sponsored by the Rotary Club of St. Cloud. Perfect for hosting small gatherings or large events, The Lake George Municipal Complex is a multi-use facility. The Lake’s Boathouse offers the community the opportunity to rent paddleboats, stand up paddleboards and canoes. Concessions are also available within this complex. Whatever the season, don’t miss this spectacular Lake George offers 28,000 square feet of paved walkways, a seating area with a delightful wooden

Located one hour northwest of the Twin Cities, and one hour south of the northern lakes and forests of the state, St. Cloud is central to both tourism and commerce. The area comprises several communities: St. Cloud, Waite Park, Sartell, St. Joseph and Sauk Rapids, and three counties: Stearns, Sherburne and Benton. Manufacturing, retail and service industries are the commercial backbone of the region, equally supported by the extensive, highly productive farming and dairy endeavors.

senior COMMUNITY
st. cloud will be the proud host of the 2019-2020 and 2023-2024 minnesota senior games!
The experience of maturing is rapidly evolving, forcing us to rethink what it means to “grow old.” We are ignoring the stigma attached to “senior citizen” and making active decisions regarding the way we spend our retirement years. Many of us are going back to school, starting businesses, even training for triathlons. We are redefining our place in society by taking control of how we live, work and play. Here are some opportunities available for adults age 55+ in the St. Cloud community. WHITNEY SENIOR CENTER (WSC) Committed to helping expand minds through lifelong learning, because education begins at birth and continues long after retirement. Interested in learning more about our innovative and mind enriching programs? Join us at WSC for our orientation offered weekly on Mondays starting at 10:30 a.m. We will give you a glimpse of our facility, programs and services. Check out our website (ci.stcloud.mn.us and click on Departments) for more information on how WSC can serve you. ST.
