St. Cloud began as three separate settlements on the Mississippi River. One of the town sites began with a former slave owner involved in the fur trade, bringing slave-owning Southerners to the area. A second settlement was established by a professional town-entrepreneur who attracted Protestants opposed to slavery. The third site was intended for a sawmill which drew Catholics from Germany. Inm spite of the differences, the three settlements eventually merged into one city in 1856. The name “St. Cloud” was chosen to reflect the area’s long-ago French heritage, being named after a suburb of Paris, France.

LAKE
GEORGE
Lake George is home to "Summertime by George", a concert and festival that runs for 12 weeks every summer and is sponsored by the Rotary Club of St. Cloud. It's also a popular winter destination when the lake is open for ice skating. You'll find numerous paved walkways, a seating area, a beautifully-designed granite fountain and a welcoming plaza. Other features include a splash pad, public restrooms, playground area and performance pavilion. The on-site Municipal Complex is a multi-use facility. The Lake’s Boathouse building offers the community the opportunity to rent paddle boats, stand up paddleboards and canoes. Concessions are also available within this complex. THE
GARDENS
CLEMENS GARDENS
MUNSINGER GARDENS
Six gardens make up Clemens Gardens: Virginia Clemens Rose Garden, Rest Area Garden, Formal Garden, White Garden, Perennial Garden and the Treillage Garden. During the summer the six gardens draw 2,000 to 3,000 people a day from all over the world. So whether you’re a weekend gardener or professional horticulturist, visit soon and find the flavor of European gardens right here in Central Minnesota!
Situated below the Clemens Gardens and along the Mississippi River, these distinctive gardens lie under towering hemlock and pine trees. As a result, many of the garden beds are in the shade, making them astounding in their abundance of color and incredible variety of flowers. Included in the park are a large peacock cage, lovely wedding pavilion, wooden gazebo, and of course, the fabulous Mississippi River.

MISSISSIPPI
RIVER
Greater St. Cloud is lucky enough to have the Mississippi River flow right through town. Get a clear view of this scenic attraction starting at the River's Edge Convention Center where you can access the St. Cloud River Walk. Up for a hike? The River Walk follows along the Mississippi to St. Cloud State University campus. If you're not out of breath yet, you can extend your adventure and pick up the Beaver Island Trail, which continues south along the waterfront. When it comes to adventures on the Mississippi, the possibilities are endless. Pack a cooler and the family and spend the day fishing. Rent a kayak or canoe and take
advantage of our river accesses which are located at Wilson Park, St. Cloud State University and River Bluffs Regional Park. Or, make an adventure of your own...just get out and enjoy the Mississippi! mississippiriverpartners.org exploreminnesota.com
A FUN FACT: The Mississippi River begins in Northern Minnesota near Itasca and meanders south to the Gulf of Mexico. It flows through 10 states along the way. That's a 2,320 mile trip!

GRANITE
When granite deposits were found along area rivers and in land nearby, the granite industry began to develop. Granite was everywhere and even today, as you drive through St. Cloud and Central Minnesota, you’ll find buildings, houses, churches, monuments and public artwork made of granite of all kinds. One of the largest granite companies in the world is in nearby Cold Spring, and the Minnesota Correctional Facility was built on the site of the first granite quarry in St. Cloud. At one time the area claimed 19 granite companies, and the granite industry provided thousands of jobs throughout the mid-1800s to present day.

When it comes to dining in Greater St. Cloud, the choice is yours: you can travel the world in one forkful or stay right here and indulge in local classics. A beloved burger establishment dishes up greasy goodness in a white paper sack, while just down the road you can find authentic Indian cuisine in an upscale dining environment. There is no shortage of Minnesota favorites like walleye, wild rice, and juicy lucys, but there is also no shortage of Greek gyros, fresh-rolled sushi, and the best dang Irish Rueben you’ve ever had. Delve into the Greater St. Cloud dining scene to discover what you didn’t even realize you were craving.

ALISE POST! A St. Cloud native, Alise Post Willoughby began racing BMX locally at the age of six and today is the most decorated BMX National Champion in history. Kimball Minnesota native Mike Schultz is the definition of inspiration. Dedicated athlete, innovative business owner and a man of many talents, we are proud to say that Mike is from Central Minnesota. A 2008 snowmobile accident that occurred while competing in a snocross race left Schultz with a compound fracture to his knee. After multiple surgeries, his leg was amputated just above the knee. But that didn’t stop him. Schultz engineered his own prosthetic knee using a patented linkage system and a mountain bike shock which allowed him to get back in action. This device became the foundation for Schultz’s company BioDapt, Inc. Founded by Schultz in 2010, BioDapt, Inc. made the Moto Knee available to active amputees across the US and is currently used by over several hundred wounded soldiers, extreme athletes, and active lifestyle amputees. Schultz is one of those extreme athletes, with 8 X-Games Gold medals in adaptive Motocross and Snocross and most recently in 2018 he brought home a gold and

There’s never a dull moment, with more events, shopping, dining, and entertainment than you’ll be able to keep up with. Plus, the housing opportunities in the area cover the whole spectrum, from classic turn of the century homes to expansive new builds on large lots. All within a few hour’s drive of the Twin Cities and surrounded by even more fun in smaller communities, St. Cloud is positioned in the perfect place for you to call home.

You’ll find safe neighborhoods, easy access to recreation, excellent health care and abundant cultural and educational opportunities in the region. Rolling farmlands, sparkling lakes, peaceful woodlands and many nearby state parks make the area an ideal place in which to reside. And, don’t forget, a river runs through it. The mighty Mississippi River is a constant, scenic presence in the region.
St. Cloud residents place a prime emphasis on family. Combined with a strong work ethic in the community, area residents have placed a high value on quality childcare. Central Minnesota Located one hour northwest of the Twin Cities, and one hour south of the northern lakes and forests of the state, St. Cloud is central to both tourism and commerce. The area comprises several communities: St. Cloud, Waite Park, Sartell, St. Joseph and Sauk Rapids, and three counties: Stearns, Sherburne and Benton. Manufacturing, retail and service industries are the commercial backbone of the region, equally supported by the extensive, highly productive farming and dairy endeavors.

SENIOR
COMMUNITY
The experience of maturing is rapidly evolving, forcing us to rethink what it means to “grow old.” We are ignoring the stigma attached to “senior citizen” and making active decisions regarding the way we spend our retirement years. Many of us are going back to school, starting businesses, even training for triathlons. We are redefining our place in society by taking control of how we live, work and play. Here are some opportunities available for adults age 55+ in the St. Cloud community. WHITNEY SENIOR CENTER (WSC) Committed to helping expand minds through lifelong learning, because education begins at birth and continues long after retirement. Interested in learning more about our innovative and mind enriching programs? Join us at WSC for our orientation offered weekly on Mondays starting at 10:30 a.m. We will give you a glimpse of our facility, programs and services. Check out our website (ci.stcloud.mn.us and click on Departments) for more information on how WSC can serve you. ST. CLOUD AREA GREETERS A volunteer organization devoted to welcoming convention attendees and greeting at various tourism-related events. RSVP (Retired & Senior Volunteer Program) places hundreds of volunteers, 55 and over, in public and non-profit agencies in Central Minnesota. Join us in helping to make your community a better place!
