Welcome to St. Cloud Historically speaking... St. Cloud began as three separate settlements on the Mississippi River which were founded by three extremely different men. One of the town sites was begun by a former slave owner who was involved in the fur trade, bringing slaveowning Southerners to the area. A second settlement was begun by a professional town-entrepreneur who attracted Protestants opposed to slavery. The third site was intended for a sawmill which drew Catholics from Germany. In spite of the differences, the three settlements eventually merged into one city in 1856. The name “St. Cloud” was chosen to reflect the area’s French heritage, being named after a suburb of Paris, France. Soon after, granite deposits were discovered and area granite companies began shipping granite to sites all over the world. Today, in addition to granite production, the area is a center for education and retail, and is one of the state’s popular destinations for recreation and tourism.

QUArry pArk Truly a local treasure, Quarry Park and Nature Preserve (formerly known as “Hundred Acres Quarry) is the largest park in the Stearns County Parks System.

!LL 1UARRY 0ARK PHOTOS SHOWN HERE WERE TAKEN BY 1UARTER4ON 0RODUCTIONS

The 643-acre park is a fascinating look at the early granite industry in the Central Lakes area, and it is a haven for those who love the outdoors. Natural features include scenic woodlands, open prairie, wetlands, and unquarried bedrock areas, with many trails winding throughout the park. Plant life includes everything from oaks and aspens to yellow ladyslippers, Indian paintbrush and prickly pear cactus. Man-made features include a fascinating Derrick Exhibit, sizeable hills composed of quarried rock remnants (grout piles) and 30 granite quarries, most of which are now filled with water and form picturesque rock-fringed ponds – which are surprisingly clear and deep. Hills afford spectacular views of the landscape and a new observation deck provides a unique perspective. Vehicle parking permits can be purchased at the contact station or from the Stearns County Parks Department (320-255-6172). Picnic, swim, hike, fish, bike or cross-country ski — Quarry Park will provide you hours of enjoyment any time of year!

GrAnite, GrAnite everyWhere Once known as the “Nitty Gritty Granite City, St. Cloud used the above headline for A ADVERTISING CAMPAIGN When granite deposits were found along area rivers and in land nearby, the granite industry began to develop. Granite was everywhere and even today, as you drive through St. Cloud and Central Minnesota, you’ll find buildings, houses, churches, monuments and public artwork made of granite of all kinds. One of the largest granite companies in the world is in nearby Cold Spring, and the Minnesota Correctional Facility was built on the site of the first granite quarry in St. Cloud. At one time the area claimed 19 granite companies, and the granite industry provided thousands of jobs throughout the mid-1800s to present day.

The Lake George restoration project was a joint effort between the St. Cloud Rotary Club, St. Cloud Technical College students and state and county agencies. Originally a swamp that drained to the Mississippi River, over the last three years, Lake George, a small lake on the fringe of Downtown, has gone from a gravel and lawn grass shoreline to a natural habitat of trees, shrubs, native grasses, and wildflowers. Following a number of years of shoreline improvements, in 2008, total renovation of the ice-skating warming house, reception area for renting paddleboats and canoes was completed. Recent additions, funded extensively by the St. Cloud Rotary Club, included 28,000 square feet of paved walkways, new seating and lighting, a delightful wooden trellis, and a showpiece Bonestroo-designed granite fountain and plaza space. Adjacent to Lake George is a small pond with swan house, a new splash pad, public restroom, playground area, and concession building. Used for a number of different events throughout the year, the highlight of the summer at Lake George is Summertime by George, a Wednesday night free concert and festival put on by the Rotary Club of St. Cloud, with Rotarians volunteering over 1500 hours over the course of 12 weeks. Whatever the season, don’t miss this spectacular St. Cloud attraction! | 20 |

When it comes to St. Cloud’s culinary landscape, almost anything is possible. You’ll have no trouble finding food to suit every taste here! Explore accessible Downtown for a variety of offerings, starting with the -EXICAN 6ILLAGE, a colorful setting for Mexican favorites. Next there’s the beloved House of Pizza, an area dining institution, which is second to none for spectacular pizza. One of the newest kids on the block is the White Horse Tavern, unpretentious and bustling in an updated historic storefront, serving up all-American soups, sandwiches, burgers and wings, PLUS creative dishes like winter squash ravioli and specialty curry dishes. Jule’s is a warm, cozy bistro, with innovative soups and sandwiches, and chef specials daily – their Date Night is a favorite with locals! You’ll find traditional Thai at Sawatdee, so if you love Asian, this is your place!

Recently opened, Biology 701 is the only vegetarian/vegen restaurant in the area – LGBTA-friendly, too! If you’re searching for Italian like Momma used to make, Ciatti’s offers mouth-watering cuisine, featuring exceptional pasta dishes.....and the Happy Hour pizzas are to die for! Anton’s, located on the Sauk River, is an old log roadhouse, known for gigantic popovers, and &UJI is the best in the area for Japanese grill, with talented chefs the main attraction. Ice Fishing

Yes, it’s true, Minnesotans actually do enjoy ice fishing. You’ll know this is the case the next time you’re driving by a frozen lake and see tiny (some not so tiny) shacks dotting the landscape. Care to try it yourself? Central Minnesota has a wide variety of lakes that are perfect for wintertime angling. For information, call the DNR at 1-800-766-6000, or stop by any area bait shop. Moving To The area PROUD OF OUR SAFE CITY

Central Minnesota

Located one hour northwest of the Twin Cities, and one hour south of the northern lakes and forests of the state, St. Cloud is central to both tourism and commerce. The area comprises several communities: St. Cloud, Waite Park, Sartell, St. Joseph and Sauk Rapids, and three counties: Stearns, Sherburne and Benton. The region has experienced extraordinary growth in the past decade and, in fact, remains the most rapidly growing metropolitan area in the state. Manufacturing, retail and service industries are the commercial backbone of the region, equally supported by the extensive, highly productive farming and dairy endeavors.

Rolling farmlands, sparkling lakes, peaceful woodlands and many nearby state parks make the area an ideal place in which to reside. And, don’t forget, a river runs through it. The mighty Mississippi River is a constant, scenic presence in the region.

our Senior CoMMuniTy The experience of maturing is rapidly evolving, forcing us to rethink what it means to “grow old.” We are ignoring the stigma attached to “senior citizen” and making active decisions regarding the way we spend our retirement years. Many of us are going back to school, starting businesses, even training for triathlons. We are redefining our place in society by taking control of how we live, work and play. Here are some opportunities available for adults age 55+ in the St. Cloud community. UÊ Whitney Senior Center (WSC) is committed to helping expand minds through lifelong learning because education begins at birth and continues long after retirement. Interested in learning more about our innovative and mind enriching programs? Join us at WSC for our orientation offered weekly on Mondays starting at 10:30 a.m. We will give you a glimpse of our facility, programs and services. Check out our website (ci.stcloud.mn.us and click on Departments) for more information on how WSC can serve you.
