Welcome To St. Cloud

Historically speaking...

Kayaking on the Mississippi River

St. Cloud began as three separate settlements on the Mississippi River which were founded by three extremely different men. One of the town sites was begun by a former slave owner who was involved in the fur trade, bringing slave-owning Southerners to the area. A second settlement was begun by a professional town-entrepreneur who attracted Protestants opposed to slavery. The third site was intended for a sawmill which drew Catholics from Germany. In spite of the differences, the three settlements eventually merged into one city in 1856. The name “St. Cloud” was chosen to reflect the area’s French heritage, being named after a suburb of Paris, France. Soon after, granite deposits were discovered and area granite companies began shipping granite to sites all over the world. Today, in addition to granite production, the area is a center for education and retail, and is one of the state’s popular destinations for recreation and tourism. A most friendly climate! Central Minnesota is a theater of the seasons. Spring is alive with color, from crab apple trees to tulips and daffodils. The summers are warm and balmy with quickly passing thunderstorms. Our autumns are crisp and clear with abundant fall foliage colors. Even our winters are beautiful with hoarfrost and crystal snowfalls. But don’t be fooled – always check the thermometer before heading outside!

granite, granite, everywhere Once known as the “Nitty Gritty Granite City”, St. Cloud used this headline for a 1921 advertising campaign. When granite deposits were found along area rivers and in land nearby, the granite industry began to develop. Granite was everywhere and even today, as you drive through St. Cloud and Central Minnesota, you’ll find buildings, houses, churches, monuments and public artwork made of granite of all kinds. One of the largest granite companies in the world is in nearby Cold Spring, and the Minnesota Correctional Facility was built on the site of the first granite quarry in St. Cloud. At one time the area claimed 19 granite companies, and the granite industry provided thousands of jobs throughout the mid-1800s to present day.

lake george

The Lake George restoration project was a joint effort between the St. Cloud Rotary Club, St. Cloud Technical College students and state and county agencies. Originally a swamp that drained to the Mississippi River, over the last three years, Lake George, a small lake on the fringe of Downtown, has gone from a gravel and lawn grass shoreline to a natural habitat of trees, shrubs, native grasses, and wildflowers. Following a number of years of shoreline improvements, in 2008, total renovation of the ice-skating warming house, reception area for renting paddleboats, paddleboards and canoes was completed. Recent additions, funded extensively by the St. Cloud Rotary Club, included 28,000 square feet of paved walkways, new seating and lighting, a delightful wooden trellis, and a showpiece Bonestroo-designed granite fountain and plaza space. Adjacent to Lake George is a small pond with swan house, a new splash pad, public restroom, playground area, and concession building. Used for a number of different events throughout the year, the highlight of the summer at Lake George is Summertime by George, a Wednesday night free concert and festival sponsored by the Rotary Club of St. Cloud, with Rotarians volunteering over 1500 hours over the course of 12 weeks. Whatever the season, don’t miss this spectacular St. Cloud attraction!

Ice Fishing Yes, it’s true, Minnesotans actually do enjoy ice fishing. You’ll know this is the case the next time you’re driving by a frozen lake and see tiny (some not so tiny) shacks dotting the landscape. Care to try it yourself? Central Minnesota has a wide variety of lakes that are perfect for wintertime angling. For information, call the DNR at 1-800-766-6000, or stop by any area bait shop. Stay warm!

Geocaching A popular activity for the whole family, geocaching is an entertaining adventure game for gps users. Participants check the internet for location coordinates to find rewarding caches that have been hidden by organizations and individuals. There are basically only three rules: 1. Take something from the cache 2. Leave something in the cache 3. Write about it in the logbook To find out more about geocaching and gps devices, visit www.geocaching.com. Local zip codes to enter for a list of hundreds of local caches are: St. Cloud 56301, 56303 & 56304; Sauk Rapids 56379; Sartell 56377; Waite Park 56387

our senior community The experience of maturing is rapidly evolving, forcing us to rethink what it means to “grow old.” We are ignoring the stigma attached to “senior citizen” and making active decisions regarding the way we spend our retirement years. Many of us are going back to school, starting businesses, even training for triathlons. We are redefining our place in society by taking control of how we live, work and play. Here are some opportunities available for adults age 55+ in the St. Cloud community. • Whitney Senior Center (WSC) is committed to helping expand minds through lifelong learning because education begins at birth and continues long after retirement. Interested in learning more about our innovative and mind enriching programs? Join us at WSC for our orientation offered weekly on Mondays starting at 10:30 a.m. We will give you a glimpse of our facility, programs and services. Check out our website (ci.stcloud.mn.us and click on Departments) for more information on how WSC can serve you. • St. Cloud Area Greeters a volunteer organization devoted to welcome convention attendees and greet at various tourism related events. • RSVP, the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program places hundreds of volunteers, 55 and over, in public and non-profit agencies in Central Minnesota. Help make your community a better place! • Central Minnesota Council on Aging and the Senior LinkAge Line® are the places to call for information about senior housing, Medicare, transportation, home health care and other seniorrelated questions.

This is what Central Minnesota is all about. Gather your family for a warm summer’s day at a parade, or visit us in winter and head for the ski slopes. Arts and Crafts fairs reflect our creative side; our local Pioneer Village and a turn-of-the-century hotel celebrate our fascinating area history; and recreational attractions draw folks from all over the state. All that, and we also have nearby lakes and beaches to lure us to the Great Outdoors.
